Friday 6/30/17, lunch. Three women on our lunch hour from the School District. We were accommodated with a table in the back, which the hostess said we could have to eat our "to stay" slices. The waiter cleared the water glasses (why they pre-set the table for 3 seemed unnecessary, and a waste of all that paper, flatware, glasses, and china!), after a bit, he returned to take away all the settings, reaching over us to clear as we ate. Then he returned to say, "if you're finished, I need this table." and walked away, but came back to wipe down the table before we could fetch our purses and slide out of the booth. Now, were we seated more than 15 minutes? I doubt it. We walked to and from work, left at 1:00 and returned at 1:48. That's a lunch hour? My associate's mushroom pizza was BLACK on the bottom, no exaggeration. They explained, "The mushrooms take a longer time. We don't want to serve raw mushrooms." My white slice was fine, however we are not interested in returning. Now, I realize that wait staff depend on tips; I was contemplating leaving one, but after that "service"? NOPE! And, although we were told face-to-face by that same hostess a few weeks ago that they don't take reservations, there were reserved signs on 2 tables as we entered! Wha??? It's Manhasset, and the taxes are high on Plandome, but the other pizza places occupy storefronts on Plandome also. Perhaps if Umbertos didn't have to wash so many unused place settings, and print up so many unused placemats, and had some more professional wait staff who knew how to service a table, their overhead wouldn't be so huge and the prices would be more in-line with the quality of the food they sell. Yay Villa Milano (constantly appreciative of the School staff!!!!, owner/employees are community-minded folks who know and care about their clientele), Yay Gino's, Yay Randazzo's. The pizza wars are on in Manhasset, but this establishment looses in our opinion. read more

I was being nice by not writing a bad yelp review for this restaurant but apparently emailing the owner and not getting an answer warrants me doing so. I ate in this place and it was horrible. I was served by the so called manager because they were short staffed. I never got bread on my table. Was left with an empty water glass for my entire meal. Food came out wrong. Had to wait for the meal to be redone while I watched my daughter finish her meal If this guy continues to manage this place... it will be gone!! I've come here over a dozen of times with my kids since their summer opening. The Pizza is delicious, especially the grandmas pizza (I love the corner piece)! The one thing that is truly exceptional here is their sausage. It is so delicious and no other place compares! I always order a side (or two) of their sausage. They make it fresh onsite every morning and their recipe is phenomenal. If you're a sausage lover you must try their sausage!! I order a side of their meatballs as well and they are always consistent and delicious with a hearty beefy taste. The addition of their gelato stand has made it even more fun for the kids and I. Some cons. The umbertos fried calamari, love the red hot peppers and the flavor but it was a on the oily side. Perhaps they need a different type of oil or need to drain it more before serving to the table. This dish has potential to be one of the best if they can figure out the oil situation. I ordered the chicken parm hero for lunch one afternoon. The presentation was not impressive. Small pieces of sliced fried chicken placed on average looking and tasting Italian bread with mozzarella lightly melted ~ it was disappointing. My last con is the three cheese gnocchi... I could not eat it because it was drowning once again in oil. The waiter was kind enough to exchange it out and give me a pesto gnocchi instead which was ok. It was edible but still heavy in the oil. All in all I like this place, like I said I have been here over a dozen times with my kids, they love it, and I will continue to return. First of all I am an Umberto's fan but, not this particular restaurant! Perhaps my expectation for this recently opened new location was just too high but there is never an excuse for poor management. While the food was acceptable nothing else was from the wait time through the service itself. All through our ordeal the newly minted managers were openly enjoying enjoying themselves and seemed to be congratulating each other rather then pitching in where they were sorely needed. In addition to this public review for my fellow Yelp users I have made my feelings known directly to the Umberto's establishment. Granted, we went on a busy Sunday night but -the wait was longer than they told us -the waitress super rushed our ordering -the zucchini was tasteless -the tortellini soup lacked flavor -the chicken parm was totally lacking -my wife's pizza arrived after the rest of us finished our meal Kids got a slice of pizza each and we still spent $70. This was a second visit. Both for pizza. Both takeout. A Friday night in August, not particularly busy. Pizza had a nice crust but undistinguished taste. It was a 3. Also ordered a small salad to go. Pizza was ready and boxed. 5minutes, 7 minutes, 12 minutes! Finally brought it out of the kitchen like they were doing me a favor. Iceberg lettuce, couple of olives, some shredded carrots. The hostess on Sunday at 6:00 pm was discourteous, rude and was the reason we left the restaurant. She needs a lesson on how to deal with the public. I requested ( twice ) a table away from the door. She did not answer me, just walked away towards a table in the front with two menus. She turns around insinuating we should have followed her.,I asked if this was for us? She just walked away. Then I went to the bathroom and saw that there were five booths in the back . Two were occupied by parties of two. One table had four people and then there were teo empty tables in the back. I asked her again( nicely) if we could have one of those tables. I was cold ( I am going Through chemotherapy ). She said they were reserved and walked away. This is actually on the border of 5 stars, and there's a good chance it will get bumped up to that on my next visit. I'm just not sure it's destination quality pizza: the kind of place I'd go out of my way to try. I was eager to try this place ever since the "coming soon" sign went up, and I wasn't disappointed. Construction seemed to take a while, but it's easy to see where all the work went. The place looks great inside; it's a bit more upscale than your typical pizza joint. The menu here is impressive. There's a good selection of Italian food (both pasta and meat entrees) but the highlight is the Pizza - and there's a good variety of that as well. In addition to the classic Neapolitan, there are two types of square pizzas (Grandma and Sicilian) as well as Deep Dish. We tried a Neapolitan with sausage. The sausage was a premium topping, but was well worth it. The pizza came out with huge chunks of delicious sausage, which I presume was made in house. Like most typical pizza joints Umbertos uses gas ovens to cook their pizzas. That said, the crust was still pretty impressive - and combined with the good quality cheese and the already mentioned quality topping made for a nice pie. I'd generally prefer coal or wood fire oven pizza... which may be the only thing keeping this place for an automatic 5 stars. Another bonus here is that they serve bread with your meal - which is always a plus - and the bread is pretty good as well. My son tried tried the Abbruzzese Panini (grilled chicken, fresh mozzarella, balsamic vinegar) and said it was great. So far things are off to a great start and I look forward to returning and trying more of the menu. read more

It's my second time coming, and I was disappointed. Making a reservation was a hasel being that they informed us that they usually don't make reservations for more than 7 people and that they would have to call us back, which they never did. We were seated right away but were never given bread til much much later. We ordered spagetti with sauce for the kids and got penne instead. I ordered a ceasar salad with grilled shrimp and got grilled chicken instead. Our waiter seemed impatient. They're food's good, but wouldn't recommend them for a sit down dinner. read more

Another great meal at Umbertos. Love the new location in Manhasset. Nice decor, nice casual vibe that's modern, and Italian , and friendly and fun. Favorites include the Kale cesar, the regular cesar, and actually any of the salads. Have had various pizzas and pastas which were excellent. Also like the sole francese and sole oregenata. Went to Umbertos for my first time today. I ordered the Lentil Soup and Vegetable Panini combo. My soup came, and although it tasted very good, there was a large piece of plastic in it, which I discovered upon chewing. It was a 1 inch by 1 inch piece of plastic wrap. Worst of all, when I brought it to their attention, they took the soup away and did not offer me another. I assumed that meant it would be taken off my bill, which it wasn't. Better believe I got my money back. Never again. Much prefer Villa Milano. read more

I have never given a bad review, but this was not a good experience. While the food was good, the service was awful. Customer service is important. It sets part of the reputation of the restaurant. It started out very nice. We did nothing wrong, we were not difficult customers, never asked for anything off-menu or customised. Then out of nowhere, the waiter disappears. No water refills, nothing. Finally someone else comes to the table, we ask what happened to our waiter, she says he's busy on the other side. Really? The waiter never came back, someone drops the check on the table and also disappears. I did not want to leave a tip. 1) if tips are not shared, enjoy the consequences of no service=no tip. 2) if tips are shared, the waitstaff should ask what happened. 3) it felt like an experiment. No matter how bad you treat a customer, they feel obligated to leave a tip anyway. However, my companion insisted on leaving a nice tip anyway. WHY? We will never go back. read more

Not Fresh at all! Totally disappointed with my order. I ordered a chicken parm hero and it tasted reheated. The chicken was so dry and it just wasn't fresh; tasted like it was made on Sunday but it's Weds. the sauce was delicious though. I also ordered a half salad which was very tiny and only had 3 croutons. Not what I was expecting for the price. Umbertos is a family friendly place with AMAZING pizza. Chef Mike always treats our 3 yr old son like gold. It's pretty evident that he loves what he does. Buyers beware if you dine in be prepared to pay 30% more than take out. The eggplant pie for instance is $10 a slice when you take out or sit in the take out area. However if you dine in and use the wait staff the same exact eggplant pie becomes $13.25. ?? Wtf is that. So technically the food is 50% more 30% + Gratuity usually 20 %. First person's meal came, 10 minutes after that 2nd person's meal arrived, and third person's meal took another 10 minutes after that and a needed complaint to the manager. Poor service! I am so happy that this restaurant opened up in this neighborhood! The food was very fresh, and everything was excellent. My friend ordered the pizza and said it was very good. My pasta with clam sauce was lighter tasting then I'm used to, but delicious. My son, who has severe allergies to dairy, eggs and nuts was very anxious about going to a pizzeria. However, the staff took extra care, discussed the plan of action, and went way beyond what was necessary to make sure my son's food did not touch anything he was allergic to. Mike was amazing, and gave my son VIP treatment- gave him a tour of the kitchen, and a t-shirt. During the tour, my son told me that he saw them making fresh mozzarella and homemade sausages. I love this place. This neighborhood needed a place like Umberto's. Casual, but with excellent food. read more

This is my 9th time since Umberto's opened in Manhasset, and will be the LAST. Although the staff are very friendly, the food is suboptimal for the prices they charge. Today, I ordered take out. I had the baked clams which were undercooked and bland. The chicken parm was overcooked, dry and chewy. The penne it came with rivaled the pasta served at shelter rock elementary cafeteria. The spaghetti carbonara was tasty but they skimp on the the ingredients and portions. Bottom line, the patrons will soon realize that Umberto's is simply not worth it. They have high overhead and that reflects on their high prices with mediocre food. That is simply the truth. read more

My husband and I decided to try this new umbertos against my better judgement as my family stopped going to the one in New Hyde Park about a decade ago when we were served freezer burned food (more than once). The table next to us asked for Parmesan cheese and some waiter took the cheese off of our table without asking us and I was cheeseless, until I was able to flag down another waiter and request some cheese. I will say that the pizza on the next table looked good, but we ordered food food. My husband and I both started with ceaser salads that were, generally pretty mediocre with burned and oddly spiced crutons. Additionally, I ordered a Diet Coke which was completely flat (how does that happen?). I ordered the chicken Marsala which was okay, but nothing spectacular. It came with a side of pasta covered in red sauce that resembled Franco American out of the can. My husband ordered fish which he said was fine but nothing amazing. At the end of the day, this place is really just a pizza joint that thinks it is a restaurant because they use cloth napkins. The service is pretty craptacular, so if you want pizza from this place, I'd recommend getting it to go. read more

Excellent addition to Plandome Road. The prices are a bit high, but that is to be expected. I am gluten free, and their gf pizza is AWESOME. The crust is tasty and delicious. Some other gluten free pizzas I've tried, they taste like cardboard. Very good food! I love the pasta dishes. Sometimes the woman that answers the phone to place an order for delivery is not very nice, but that is okay. The delivery guys are very nice and friendly, and the one time I ate in the restaurant it was very good. I would come here again. I think the pizza is better than Gino's...just saying. read more

My first visit to Umberto's, a few months ago, was very pleasant. I thought it was a great addition to the neighborhood, cheery venue with good food. I didn't have the service issues stated by other reviewers. I was excited to add umbertos to my list of go to neighborhood places. However, my second visit was pretty disappointing. The portions were small, food over salted and the entrees now omit the veggies. The dinner plate was a sad sea of space with a tiny portion of protein. This was definitely a big downgrade from our last visit and frankly from any other Italian option nearby. When you lose sight of quality and value, customers will begin to notice. Thats too bad as the venue is very pleasant. read more
