I have always seen this salon in passing but never really thought about booking an appointment. After hearing about the positive experience my sister had here I decided to give it a shot. Booking: I first messaged through Yelp and then got connected with someone to book an appointment via text. I love the book with the text feature, makes things so convenient! Booking the appointment was super easy which was a major plus for me. The appointment itself: walking into the salon I was impressed because the salon is quite spacious and I liked the open setup. I was booked with James who they told me is one of the master stylists there. I wasn't sure what this meant but, honestly, I was a little worried this might mean he would be pretentious because that's been my experience in the past. I was completely wrong. James was incredibly knowledgeable, experienced, down to Earth, and easy to talk to. He always asked follow up questions to make sure he knew what I wanted and what I was looking for and was an all around delight to work with!! He gave me a fun, fresh, and different haircut than the one I had before and I love it! I have to say, this is no small feat because I always have long hair and I always ask for the same thing (trim and layers) because I'm afraid they will mess up my wavy hair and I'll be forced to have to style it every day. This time around I was more open and said that I just was tired of my hair being a heavy mop on my head and with that comment he gave me a cut that was completely perfect for me. It is much shorter than my usual but he styled it so well that it's light and fresh but I still don't need to style it. I'm really happy with my haircut and hope to keep being able to book future appointments with James! Thank heaven for Umbrella Salon, I live an hour away and after being an Umbrella client for 15 years... I thought I might find a salon closer to my home, to save time... Well that was a mistake! I am very selective and although the salons I tried were closer and the stylists were nice, the overall experiences I had simply lacked the fabulous vibes, quality styling, contemporary artistry, high grade products used on my hair from start to finish and the professionalism I was use to at Umbrella Salon. I love that I can call and see just about any stylist at Umbrella and have a perfect service including THE BEST BLOW DRY, they select the best artists to work with and spend countless hours educating and training their staff on the latest and greatest methods, techniques and products. I like that the owners have high standards and expect a lot from their team, it really shows, nothing is worst than going into a lack luster salon and having a lack luster experience. I want to be Inspired by my stylist and the environment I'm in. Over the years it's been great to be a client of a salon who's stylists have the opportunity to travel and present their work at Fashion Week in NYC and other places around the world. There is no other salon like Umbrella in Silicon Valley, their commitment to strive for excellence will keep me coming back and I will never wander again... I even love the music they play! For me, it's worth the cost because my style and color lasts longer with their products and services, it's worth the drive because I walk in feeling one way and walk out feeling like a million bucks every time! and... they even validate my parking... Being a client for 15 years I have seen so many young stylist with no experience start working at Umbrella and blossom into amazing artists, over and over again. I've been getting my hair done by Pualani for the past 10 years. She's a seasoned professional who understands hair and what will suit you. She's also easy to talk to, very attentive, and listens to what I want. I've shown her pictures of hairstyles and she knows exactly how to recreate them effortlessly. I've had a variety of services from haircuts to full and partial highlights and she's great at all of them! She goes above and beyond for her clients, often times squeezing me in if I need something done last minute. She's also great at recommending the right products that help me maintain healthy hair. I came here as a hair model and was worked on by Aubrea, which was such an opportunity considering her talent as a stylist and the salon being so renowned. As a model, I didn't pay full price, but I honestly felt like I should have because the quality of service and work was amazing. She took her time on my hair and made sure everything was on point. I showed her a photo of what I wanted and she lived by it. My hair was previously done at another salon and had sort of an uneven blend and all kinds of tones going on. Aubrea fixed my hair and it could not look any better! She made sure that I would walk out of the salon feeling 100% satisfied and I was beyond that. My hair looks A M A Z I N G, all thanks to her! Christian is incredible! I was feeling like my old haircut was very old-fashioned and a bit blah, and he simply worked his magic. He listened to my needs and immediately understood what I wanted. This is my second time at Umbrella Salon and first time with Jade. My stylist the first time around was so sweet but my hair (although it was nice) was not what I wanted. I decided to give Umbrella another try and this time booked my appointment with Jade. I am so happy with the outcome of my hair!! Jade was running a little late but I didn't mind because I was hungry and there was an erik's deli next door ;) So a little background on my hair-- I had gotten my hair "balayaged" by a different salon and the hair stylist messed up my hair big time. It was extremely harsh, not blended, and very brassy. I almost wanted to cry lol. I went to get it fixed and it looked a lot better but still was not what I wanted. I explained to Jade that I wanted more dimension in my hair and that my blonde was too overwhelming. I also showed him a few pictures so that he could get an idea of what I wanted. He suggested to hand paint a chocolate brown color throughout my hair and tone it to a nice ashy brown. The result was all I wanted and more! Jade is extremely detailed and very informative. As he was working on my hair, he let me know what exactly he was doing and how we was going to achieve what I wanted. What I like about Jade is that he's very honest and gets to the point. When I showed him pictures of what I wanted, he let me know right away whether it was achievable in one session or if I would need multiple session. I like that he doesn't beat around the bush and try to persuade you into doing something you don't want! Another thing that I really like about jade is that he is very focused and detail oriented. The entire time he was focused on one thing and one thing only--my hair! I'm not a fan of small talk (lol) and I love that he's warm and friendly but not overly friendly. If that makes any sense?? He wasn't conversing with other stylists and gave me his full attention. In my opinion, what separates a good stylist from a great one is their attention to detail, honesty, and their willingness to make each customer happy! Jade is the entire package. I went here a week ago and booked a super last minute appointment with Anthony- a day right before I left for a work trip, and seriously this was the best impulse decision I've made! I've seen Anthony's work previously and when I saw he had an availability, i booked as fast as I could. I'm pretty simple when it comes to my hairstyles but I want to put more of an effort- and Anthony was more than helpful! He listened to what I wanted, gave me feedback and what he envisioned, and I left the salon more than content. I went in thinking I'd be coming in just to get a trim, however connecting with Anthony and blown away with his styling and service - Umbrella & Anthony have secured themselves to be my go-to salon/stylist! Created a Yelp just so I could give my wonderful stylist Aubrea some kudos! I came in after having not had a haircut in nearly two(!) years. My hair was a long, frizzy, dry mess. I came in with an idea of what I wanted, Aubrea gave me some recommendations, and I ended up with one of the best haircuts I've ever had (I'm literally sitting here swaying it around because I love it so much)! She was super sweet, incredibly helpful, and clearly loves her job, and the results she gets most certainly reflect that. I have fine hair, but a lot of it, so sometimes stylists have trouble figuring out what exactly to do with it, but Aubrea did an excellent job of making my hair look bouncy and full! I have been coming to Umbrella salon for years and I have one of the best stylists in the Bay Area, in my opinion. Christian Ceja Complin is a professional through and through! He has been doing hair for many years and has been doing Fashion week in New York and Paris. He listens to what I want, but knows exactly what I need, so he will suggest something that will compliment me and at the same time will not have me regretting it as soon as I walk out. He takes the time to get to know his clients, and does everything in his power to make sure you are happy with the results! When I was laid off and couldn't afford to come here, I just let my hair go...I would not trust anyone else with my hair or my daughters. This is why I call him the Hair God, and for good reason! I always leave looking and feeling AH-MAZING!! He also has an incredible assistant, Diana Garcia, who has leaned so much working under his wing, she is now branching out and building her own clientele at the salon. This Salon is amazing! They make everything so convenient. They offer online scheduling, which for those of us who for whatever reason prefer not to schedule over the phone or maybe prefer to do a little research on the investment we will be making, it's great for that too! I chose Jade, since my friend new him and promised me he wouldn't disappoint. I of course took her word for it, and scheduled him for a haircut, and I must say, it's probably the BEST haircut I've ever received. I first was greeted by Aubrey( I hope I spelled your name right if you're reading this) who asked me a couple questions and proceeded to prep me for Jade. She gave me an amazing shampoo, with a little bit of massage, which had it not been my first time probably would've fell asleep. Jade then continued to ask me a couple questions and proceeded to work his magic. First time that I've ever walked out feeling like a million bucks and I've had my share of bad experiences, I plan on going for a color service and I'm so excited, I'm sure they're all amazing, I was just lucky enough to get Jade. I haven't stopped at umbrella salon in close to three years... For good reason. Initially I found the salon through yelp. I'm a firm believer in "you get what you pay for" so I don't go cheap on my hair, you have to show it to the world every day! It's your number one accessory. Anyway after reading countless reviews I booked an appointment with Jade. It was awesome. He made my fine baby hair look voluminous and HEALTHY. I stuck with him for a while, I don't cut my hair often but I think I went to him a handful of times which is a lot for me. Then I decided to change it up and add some color. The whole ombré thing was really catching on so I made an appointment with jade to go full ombré. The appointment started like any other. I showed him a few pics of what I wanted, he started working, and we chatted like normal. Another customer comes in. No biggie right? Hair dressers double book all the time. Almost two hours later I'm still sitting in the chair with color in my hair and the other custie has came and gone. Hair = fried After the hair frying jade recommends a deep conditioner to fix it & I gladly accept. The finish product was nothing like I expected. The pictures I showed him were a very bold, solid, yet gradient ombré. I was left with a few over processed ombré highlights. I was beyond disappointed but I figured maybe next time he'll add more and it will look more like what I had wanted. Then the biggest shocker, the bill. Like I said I usually don't cheap-out on my hair but I was not expecting to be charged up the wazoo to let someone double book me AND fry my precious fine delicate hair. Not only did the six foils cost me close to $300 but jade charged me for the conditioning treatment to fix the damage he had done! At that point I knew it was over. I'd never go back to umbrella again. It was nice while it lasted though. Almost three years and two bobs later and I'm still trying to grow out the damage that was done. I'm about to just pull a JLaw and chop it all off. If it's any consolation I told my ex that umbrella does a great job and he now sends his fiancé there. I think I've officially found my favorite hair stylist at Umbrella! The very first time I came here, Kien gave me a subtle, but very sophisticated hair cut. Then I met Yanin, who gave me cute straight bangs. I thought I was happy with Yanin, but when she was unavailable I booked an appointment with Lisa. I know, I'm such a whore--hopping from stylist to stylist. But it was so worth it! I've seen Lisa around at the salon before and I always admired her sassy and urban style from afar. She's cut my hair several times now and I'm always happy with the modern and edgy results. Lisa is extremely meticulous, I'd probably say borderline OCD, but I like that in a hair stylist. I want someone who I can rely on to take care of my unruly hair and especially someone I can relate to. Lisa is very outgoing and most importantly, she delivers. I always leave the salon feeling confident and my hair always looks fantastic! I also want to add that I looove the hair products available at Umbrella. I use Sachajuan's mousse for volume, Bumble's surf spray for windswept styling, and Oribe's soft laquer hairspray for a flexible finishing touch. Another well deserved five stars! read more

First of all let me say some good things Katrina has some skills with scissors and gives a good haircut. The salon is nice, clean, very hip, close to me, reasonable in pricing and that is why I changed salons. I received a haircut from Katrina in November maybe early December and loved it. A good haircut from a friendly stylist at a decent price is hard to come by for me. Lets fast forward to today. Leap year of all days, a little history and background information. I am a busy college student and work full time. I am working six days a week at a hotel and I work the overnight shift. When I have a day off I sleep and study for the classes I have four days a week in the evening. I have been looking to get a haircut from the beginning of the year and I have been cancelled on twice before and decided you know what... maybe the third time is a charm. I made my appointment for today before I go to work because it is my only free time I have in my busy schedule. I recently switched cell phone providers because Verizon is one of the worst providers in my opinion. Today I realized that they do not have my new number but I shrug it off and think ya know what.. what are the odds that it will happen three times. Fast forward to today, I go to the salon expecting a good haircut and my hair woes to be solved. I go up to the receptionist and say I am here for my appointment. She says ooo we tried to call you but your stylist called in sick. Your phone was disconnected, may I have your new number. I asked if she was serious. She said yes. In the kindest of words I told her it is ridiculous that this has happened. When I made my appointment a week and a half ago I explained this to the receptionist that I am a busy person with a hectic schedule and have been cancelled on twice. The receptionist said that she hopes all goes well. You know the basic contrived lauding of a frustrated person. I basically told the receptionist that this is unacceptable and that she will not have my new phone number because I do not want to be contacted by the manager of the salon nor the stylist. If the manager/owner of Umbrella salon reads this I don't care if they want to give me a free haircut or anything. I am still standing by this review and saying. Do not go to this salon. They may have talent, they may a nice salon. They lack basic social graces that one would expect from a professional business. In the words I used while talking to the receptionist of this salon. Lisa sure does know how to work some braid magic! I'm SO glad she did my hair yesterday... Even when it was hot & sticky outside (yep, I got to Montalvo at 2 pm and was running around for hours) or very, very stressful for reasons that we will not mention, that braid/bun combo stayed in place. And it wasn't hairsprayed to death to where it looked like a toupee, either! Ladies, if you need a special 'do for a special occasion, book an appointment with my girl Lisa. I'm not a fan of fancy complicated cuts... Too much maintenance. All I ask for is a few inches off the ends. Easy, right? I figure anyone at Super Cuts can do this. I actually don't mind Super Cuts - but I received a gift certificate to Umbrella, so I tried it. Amber's assistant washed my hair. It was heaven. I got a scalp & neck massage. I almost started drooling. Amber tossed my hair around, then blew it dry. WTF? *Aren't you going to cut my hair first?* Nope! My hair got cut dry. I've only seen 5 year olds do it this way. Hair is supposed to be cut wet, then dried, then minor cutting touch-ups after it's dry. I went home with uneven hair and dead ends that should have been cut off. Thank god I didn't pay for this out of my own pocket! A week later I traveled overseas and visited a hair salon. Stylist asked me when the last time was I got my hair cut. I told her it had only been 1 week. She gave me a sideways look. I told her my dry hair cut story, she said it should never be done that way, then she gave me a discount. How sad when I get a discount in a 3rd world country for pathetic hair. I give this place 2 stars because of Amber's assistant's wonderful hands. Thank you, assistant!!!! I like this salon a lot. Most of the artists are very talented and try and understand what you have in mind. I have been going here for straight 3 years now. However, my last experience with Christian was really bad. I'll go to the salon again but just not too Christian. I had gone for a cut and balayage ( wanting for a new look for my birthday!!) I felt rushed, hair are too short and color is absolutely NOT what I asked for. Not even close. My friends didn't even notice a difference in my hairdo.. forget any compliments. Spent $500 ... I've been with Umbrella for a couple years now, and I've gotten haircuts from three different stylists. All three gave me haircuts that I've loved. Different styles. Different colors. Quality service. ===================================================== KHOI --I've gone to Khoi for a couple times already. The first time, my mom & I wanted to try Umbrella. He took me as a client, and his girlfriend (and fellow stylist) took my mom. Both of us had a fabulous time. WASHING HAIR + NECK MASSAGE = HEAVEN. It feels so good. He is always caring, and goes through a very thorough consultation, making sure he gets what you want. Once, I got my hair dyed purple, and it washed out after a week *tear*. I contacted the salon, and Khoi happily used a different type of purple in my hair, free of charge! THANK YOUU! **Styles I've gotten from Khoi: -straight bangs w/ long, edgy layers -straight bangs. face framing layers. 3 purple color panels (L, R, back - all three were peek a boo highlights) ===================================================== JEN --My mom made my appt with Umbrella when I was back in Berkeley, so I told her to request for whichever stylist was available when I drove home. That stylist was Jen. Jen quickly greeted me with a smile and hug as she walked me to the chair and analyzed my hair. Take note: I hadn't gotten my highlights retouched in...forever. I blame school for making me busy and being an hour away. She noted it, and with the time frame that I had, she knew it wasn't going to be enough to redo the highlights and add color. BOOM. Scheduled my next appt! Anyways, back to Jen. Jen is so fun, and always has a smile. She's always down for girl talk & makes me feel beautiful throughout the entire process. She has a great eye for color, and suggested a few colors for me when I got my highlights redone. They were fab! Too bad they washed out after a few months. She has a GREAT memory, asking me about boyfriends, school, banquets, graduation (and remembering the exact dates!) **Styles I've gotten from Jen: -sideswept bangs w/ face framing layers -sideswept bangs w/ retouching highlights [a BEAUTIFUL shade of ash brown] -SHE GIVES FREE BANG TRIMS! Awesomeeee! ===================================================== YANINE --I decided to be a hair model for one of the assistants at Umbrella, Yanine. She was so friendly when I walked in, and I loved her hair :) That's a good sign, right? Yanine is one of the assistants that will 'graduate' soon & will be one of the newest stylists, so I'm glad she was the one to cut my hair! Through the hair model class, the haircut took a couple hours longer than if I made an appt at the salon with the other stylists, but this was acceptable since every step she took she had to get approval from Kien, the owner and person teaching the class. Yanine talks you through the entire process, something I highly value in these stylists. She may need to work on her "touch" as she sometimes scratched my scalp tossing my hair from side to side, as well as scratching my neck when she finger combed my hair, but otherwise, I was pleased with my haircut. She gave me bangs with a bit of an edge (so that it wasn't the grown out "all in one piece / toupee" look as she called it). And she always took note of my highlights. To those hesitant to be a model for a hair class, no worries. A senior stylist, or one of the owners (like Kien) will be there to supervise. Funny thing is, at the end of the haircut, Kien ended up styling my entire head instead of Yanine =P Kien is FABULOUS and showed me so many cool hairstyles I could rock with my new 'do. Sometimes they're stupid and put you on hold for 20 MINUTES then forget you're on the other line. Otherwise, I'd give Umbrella 5 stars for quality treatment for their customers. You get your money's worth. They aren't product pushers, and once you step into the salon, their focus is solely on you. Let me start off by saying that I really wanted to love this place. I was initially referred to Kien from a friend who frequently gets his hair cut here, and after reading all the fantastic reviews about him, I was almost certain that I would come out with a cut that I would gain praise from my friends - then again for the $120 I would have to pay, I had better. The salon itself was very nice, but I'm not one of those people who really care about a trendy environment, a complimentary beverage, or a head massage after my shampoo. I'm there for the end result - the cut. I came in with long hair with no style or distinction and I ended up with a shoulder length version of that. I will admit, after telling Kien that I wanted to leave my hair long, at the very last minute I said something that I will never say to a stylist again - "Do what you want. It's up to you." Big mistake. He didn't like the layers and the shape of my hair so he thought it best to cut it off. Understandable, but like I said my cut did not look like I got it from the master stylist that Kien is. It was just a shoulder length bob with no frills. In the end it was a learning experience. No matter who you see, be sure that you are extremely detailed about what you want in a cut and stick to your guns. After all, it took me 7 months to grow it back to a length that I am semi-satisfied with. Based on others reviews, I'm sure Kien is an excellent stylist, but sadly, I don't think I'll be coming back. read more

I have held myself resolute through the peer pressure to cheat on my dear Jacob for the simple fact that he is my hair savior. Okay, so I did cheat on him once, with Yanan, but it was at Umbrella Salon and I desperately needed a haircut and I couldn't get an appointment last minute :( I'M SORRY! Yanan did a great job with my hair and I would also reccomend her for a cut if you're looking (and if she still works here :D). I pretty much make the time and take the trip to San Jose to get my hair cut every couple of months. Jacob has always been consistent with giving me a great cut that looks as great as the day it was cut and styled. Finding someone who can give you a flattering haircut is rare indeed. Spending a hundred bucks to look like a million bucks is definitely worth it, don't skimp out on yourself! And that is my twelve cents. read more
