Got my thick-ass hair cut and highlighted by Khoi. He did an amazing job. I had previously dyed my hair red, and it's also naturally kind of brassy. He was able to get the gross brassy color out and gave me nice highlights. He takes his time and is a perfectionist. But more importantly (kidding), the head massages here are AMAZING. I got to the salon 30 minutes early , and was taken 15 minutes late, which frustrated me, but I could see he was a perfectionist while he was working on the guy before me. Since moving to the Bay Area 4 years ago, I still haven't found a stylist to call my own! You know what I'm talking about, Ladies, the treasured, one-of-a-kind, you would follow them to the ends of the earth stylist! Anyways, I used Umbrella Salon for about a year (4 visits) and I've never really walked out feeling great. Tia was my sylist and she was adorable, sweet and really good at coloring my hair but I wasn't too impresssed by the cuts. Something always seemed "off" with the end result and in a matter of a few weeks my hair always ended up growing out a little awkward. She does take her time with you and is not pushy about selling products and again....she's a really nice girl...but I have to keep looking. Vanessa was great! It was my first time getting my hair done at Umbrella and id say after my experience with Vanessa, all the 5 star reviews about her are pretty dead on right. She really listened to my needs, analyzed what went wrong with my previous hair cut and came with a solution to fix it. She explained really well how she was going to cut it and the whys behind it. She also explained what each Oribe hair product does that she used on my hair. Im going back soon to get my hair color corrected which she also explained what we can do to fix it. The front desk associates are very friendly and sweet. You get a parking validation of you park in the deck which is nice. Also i noticed that each stylist walked their client out to the door as they were leaving and i thought that was very professional, warm, and makes you want to come back again. I'm sad to say that Chloe is not going to be my hairdresser in the future. She's a nice person, but my second visit left so much to be desired. I came in over 2 months ago. She was training someone, so maybe that made her nervous. Unfortunately she didn't listen to anything I said about how I wanted my hair. I had an A-line going before. I wanted to keep the length in the back because it had a nice curl, but I also asked to get the hair off and back away from my face. I ended up with a not great pixie cut that was constantly stabbing me in the eyes and next to impossible to style. I've had plenty of pixies in the past as I rotate around different styles of short hair, never long. This review is for Yanin and general info. The salon is clean, well maintained and not overly noise. They give you an aaaamazing head massage for five minutes and also offer you something to drink. I had a groupon for a haircut, treatment masque and blow-out. Yanin was great! She asked me what I like about my hair, what I'm trying to do with it and then analyzed my hair for a good 10 minutes, whipped out some pictures and tried to make sure my vision was her vision. She tried to understand how it lays, what works, what doesn't, and most importantly - what she can do for me. A shampoo and head massage later I was back in the chair. She cut, styled, analyzed, tossed, cut, combed and analyzed, tossed, and cut some more. Until it was done and then the blow out. She took her time to dry and shape each section of hair until it was perfect. In short - BEST CUT and BLOWOUT I have EVER had! This will be my second post on yelp ever...and I'm going to keep this not really short but very sweet for everyone looking into this salon! Hands down this experience changed my life! Thank you Christian for giving me back the confidence in my hair and look! I am a 24 yr old blonde with baby fine hair and for years have been struggling to grow it out, make it look full but HEALTHY! I walked in and had my mind set (like I alway have) on what I want. Christian consulted me and for the first time EVER I tore down my guard and said do what you know...cause he is a PRO! As he began to talk to me I knew he wasn't in it for my money, he could see my pain and wanted to help my hair get healthy! So i said go for it! My mom got her hair cut by Vanessa. She said she was rude, and when she asked her to cut her hair so it would require limited styling she couldn't! That's the sign of a terrible stylist. It literally looks like her hair wasn't cut I feel bad for her and recommended she ask for a recut with Anna instead. Adrian is a great blow out genius. But the cut left something to be desired. I didn't like how she had me stand to cut my hair, and she cut my hair too short. She was unwilling to cut my bangs shorter and I asked her twice and she barely trimmed them. The blowout was BEAUTIFUL. even though I didn't want curls lol she curled it, I wish she would've asked because I want straight hair. Anyway the big thing was she curled my hair and then said -- so how does it look? Well beautiful! But you didn't cut it how I wanted. So I washed my hair and looking at it, it's uneven. This review is for Adrian- I'm so particular with my hair because it's so hard to manage. It's fine and flat, so I struggle for volume and style for an everyday easy look. I described this to her and she understood. She took my comments and picture of an inspiration cut graciously. I got a fresh below shoulder cut and the layers are growing out nicely (3 weeks since cut now). She used the salons thickening cream at my roots and blow dried it to activate. She gave me some samples and I actually really like. Usually, I'm weary about salon products, but this one seems to work well, esp with my fine volume-less locks. I've been going here for years and love this place. I still make the trek from the city, because I'm too lazy and too scared to find another hairdresser - good ones can be as hard to find as good boyfriends! Anyway, they have a hairdresser for every personality type, and Christian happens to be mine. Ken, the salon owner, is very creative and the salon has interesting apprentices/assistants. Where they (the assistants) may fall short on talent, they at least provide excellent entertainment value for both the hairdressers and patrons. As for the actual haircuts, they are a talented bunch and are very good at what they do...which shows in their pricing. But on the positive side, they also pamper you, with water, tea, champagne and as mentioned before, the neck and head massages (although some are better than others). It's a unique place and you'll find it well worth returning for consistent quality and service. read more

I've been going to Kien for 10+ years, and he's really contributed to my over-blown ego...have no fear, he and his freakishly talented staff can and WILL do the same for you. It's amazing how consistant this place is. I've sat during hair sessions and speculated for hours, and not once have I witnessed a less than fabulous do. They're always up on the latest and greatest, but you still get something completely organic and unique everytime. NEVER cookie-cutter. Really, these people should be in Hollywood, catering to A-Lister's at mortgage-threatening prices, but they're not. They're in Downtown San Jose, and you my friend, can call and make an appointment to change your life. So, they're not cheap, but if you skip the weekly trip to Valley Fair, you'll be good. 5 years and going! I began going to this salon when they were still at their smaller location. My stylist is name Khoi and he works MAGIC. I have stuck with him since I had a bob in college and now that I've grown my hair a foot longer, he still does beautiful work. The salon is impeccably clean, the staff is extremely professional and I am always ecstatic about how my hair turns out. Upon arrival, the staff offers you tea or bottled water. The stylist are always punctual, beginning your consultation when your appointment is scheduled. The shampoo feels divine (thank God for scalp and neck massages) and then the fun begins! Oh how I wish I could blow dry and flat iron like Khoi does. I'm very picky when it comes to getting my hair cut and colored so I am willing to pay extra as long as I feel great in the end. I came here a year ago because of the yelp reviews and requested Lisa Nguyen. I've been returning to Lisa since. She's down to earth and is an excellent stylist. There have been days when I would be sick of my long hair and ask her to chop it off at least 5 inches. She would talk me down to 3, and I would be thankful after. She's pretty high in demand so you would have to book time with her in advance. As a result, I've had to make several walk-in visits to get my bangs trimmed by other stylists such as Chloe. They did a great job cutting my bangs and I was happy with the outcome. One of the most convenient services about this place is that you can book your appointments online. I usually lose track of time when it comes to getting my haircut. I haven't received a trim on my locks in about 4 months and when I was able to get an appointment with Jan-Michael I was ecstatic because of all the reviews I heard from referrals. My hair has been digitally permed and also had balayage ombré.. So it was pretty damaged and frail at this point. Jan recommended that I cut off more than I had originally anticipated and I admit I was skeptical at first, but I'm glad he did because my hair feels so much more healthier and the way he styled it made me look more mature. Found this place thanks to Yelp. I had a cut with Tia who was super sweet and bubbly. About 2 months ago I got an asymmetrical bob at Moxie Parlour in SF....short in back & longer in front (basically, a reverse mullet). I didn't really like it so I asked Tia to try to make it closer to all one length. She did a nice job and also added some side bangs at my request. She also gave me some good styling tips for blow drying & flat ironing my new 'do. Overall, I felt that Tia really took her time to make sure my hair turned out perfect. All for $60, which I found very reasonable. She also mentioned that she'll trim my bangs for free any time I need them done, which will be good in between cuts. I will be back and wouldn't hesitate to recommend this place to my friends. In fact, if I refer 3 friends, I get a free haircut, so I will definitely recommend it to everyone I know! read more

I just got a full head of highlights done by Katrina! They turned out awesome!! She did exactly what I asked and basically knew what I was talking about when explaining what I wanted done. I've been going to Umbrella for years (since the old location!) and continue to be very pleased with my whole experience. Roz is who I trust with my blonde highlights! She's one of those people it was so easy to connect with and who really knows her sh!t. I trust her implicitly! I also love the Oribe products. My hair feels so much healthier when I use Oribe. Now, I know the salon manager checks these reviews, so I'm going to express concern about one thing that has bothered me for a while...those chandeliers. It's actually not the chandeliers that bug me as much as the dust-covered yarn. As an interior designer, I cannot support hanging something at an entry that seems so unsanitary. And now red feathers? I have been going to Nathan for about 6+ years now and I am addicted. He does the best men's haircuts in the area, and I don't know what I would do if he ever moved! Everyone is really friendly, the salon is clean and modern, and the products that they use are of high quality. The stylist I had today was Chloe and she was wonderful. This review is for Samantha- I would give more stars if I could! A little back info- I have really interesting hair. Very fine hair, but a lot of it, it's naturally wavy and if dried wrong or if there's a drop of humidity it gets insanely frizzy. Basically, I'm really picky and needed to find someone that 'gets my hair'. I went in with hair styled/highlighted/toned from another salon that I was unhappy with- my hair was a total mess,- uneven cut, brassy highlights, and dried out. Samantha sat me down, took a look and gave me suggestions. She told me it was ultimately my decision, but my hair was already a mess, told her I trust the process- and I'm SO GLAD I did! We went for a highlight with toner, cut and style. You can tell by the process and outcome that this is a labor of love. You can tell she loves what she does and takes immense pride in her work (she's a perfectionist, didn't let me leave until everything was just right!) Her understanding of color and blending really shows. My hair looks so natural (looks like naturally sun-kissed hair) and the cut is amazing (goes with my face shape really well!) Came to Umbrella in September for a do I needed done for bro's wedding. I asked several coworkers about salons I should go to, two of them mentioned Umbrella. Stepped into the salon...and YES, everyone getting a cut or giving the cut had a nice stylish do. Went there to get a color, highlights, & cut...I ended up with an AWESOME do (pre-wash, color & highlights, post-wash, conditioning tx, cut, & styling...and Bumble & Bumble products to care for my do afterwards...total price? pricey!, but it was WORTH IT!). Tia worked on my hair. She was so sweet , offered a beverage & she was very particular about how she did my highlights (THANK YOU!) Never have I EVER been to Umbrella before. I mean, yeah, I've heard of it, but never thought of stepping foot into it until my coworker told me about this place! I was recommended by my coworker to take up an appointment with Lisa N. I was a little anxious beforehand. Just because I've always had long wavy hair, and now I planned on doing something totally different to it! As time neared my appointment time, I went from anxious to excited. I went in and sat for a few minutes, while Lisa finished up on her client. She quickly came over to greet me and see what I wanted to do to my hair. Silly me, I brought in a drawing of what I would like to have done to my hair! :) Right away, we went to wash my never-ending hair, and we just chatted about pretty much everything. I felt completely comfortable with her. She brought me back to the chair, and began chopping away, while still holding a good conversation. About an hour later, I was done! I took one look and INSTANTLY loved my new hair. COMPLETELY different from my usual, but I still loved it. As I was leaving, she came over and instead of shaking my hand, she gave me a hug. What a sweet heart! Anyway, I received so many compliments on my new style that day! And not to mention, my boyfriend said I looked like a rockstar. ;) I'll definitely be coming back to her AGAIN. Nathan is super nice and completely awesome :) I've been coming to Nathan and Umbrella for 3yrs or so now for haircuts and the experience has always been great. He really loves styling hair and his passion really shows in the way he approaches his clients here. I am not the most exciting client - I only cut and rather conservatively too, I don't perm, color, use fancy hair products...and half the time I don't even blow dry my hair at home but he's always been super excited to start on my hair. He balances honest hair advice with your styling wants and ideas to bring out your best style. You always leave feeling and looking like a million bucks and with expert instruction how to keep it up at home. Also the shampoo and conditioning with scalp massage is super relaxing. The staff are all very friendly. They validate the parking garage across the street so parking is super easy. This is not a "budget" salon, so if that's your thing this probably isn't for you. But if you want reliable style, a great consistent experience, and feeling a little pampered ( at prices that are reasonable for this tier of salon) - Umbrella is great! I have friends who come here to other stylists and they've all raved about how much they love their stylists here. So, highly recommended! I do everything at the last minute so it only makes sense that when I was about two months overdue for a haircut, I called on a whim to see if Umbrella could take me last Wednesday. The peeps who answer the phone are incredibly polite and professional which is a total change of pace from the salons I have patronized over the past four years. I have also attempted to visit several upscale salons in the Bay Area and ended up so frustrated with the people on the other end of the line that I don't bother making an appointment at all. Most of these salons are like bus stops, one on every corner. The only people who aren't aware of this fact are the insolent receptionists who work there. NOT AT UMBRELLA! THEY'RE ALL NICE! Umbrella is something special. Not only could they take me that very day but I was matched with a talented and intuitive stylist, Eugene. I didn't know what the hell I wanted but I brought a picture of Cindy Crawford with me because who wouldn't want to look like her? It's not just my hair cut's end result that keeps me coming back; it's the avant-garde decour, the statuesque stylists, and most of all, it's the stylists' ability to "read" exactly what I want, every time. Jacob, in particular, is a keen listener. He's very authentic in taking interest about what's going on with me. He always delivers - with precision. I sent my boyfriend there two weeks ago, a man with curly, long hair. Jacob successfully cleaned up his 'do. My man was hesitant about going from paying $40 (old salon) to $65, but when we left, he said, "I do NOT mind coming here every 2-3 months if I'm going to get this kind of result." So below, you can see my initial review, which I am updating now. After I posted a negative review I was contacted by the Salon manager, as well as Yanin and they both apologized for the unreturned call. Yanin did not only offer me a haircut for $45 on any day, but this morning she gave me an amazing haircut experience! I immediately booked an appointment after receiving the apology calls - and an email too -. This is exactly what I would call wonderful customer service! Mistakes do happen, but the main thing is that they immediately corrected it. My appointment: Yanin is an expert in communication and matching your wishes with the possibilities. She took her time to analyze my hair (texture, color, everyday lifestyle, etc). My hair is fine and thin, and all stylists just want to cut it off to make it easier for everyone. She was the first stylist in my life, who was 100% supportive to grow it and try to make it stronger without cutting it super short. No doubt that I will go back to her on a regular basis. She is kind, professional, gives amazing scalp massage and makes you happy with the results. I love my hair and I can tell that if I go back to her regularly, and follow her instructions, my hair will be more and more beautiful. Thank you, Yanin, for providing an experience that makes me trust you as a hairdresser completely. Got a fantastic hair color advise and highlight here by Kien. I've gone through decades of coloring my hair, doing highlights and gone through the hands of hair stylists in 5 different countries, both very pricey and reputable stylists and relatively inexpensive hairdresser services as well, and rarely I have received such on the spot advise and just the right thing for my hair already at the first appointment when stylists usually don't know your hair and your style so well. Kien has an amazing eye, knowledge, intuition and skill. I've heard lots of good things from my friends about other stylists there too and apart from Kien, had a chance to work with Khoi who toned my hair and Jennifer who colored my hair and both of them were very skilled and professional and from them both I received the color and hair care advise that would keep my hair healthy, get that beautiful look I wanted and still be able to have the refresh appointments spaced out in time far enough without needing to come in every month, that was important for me. Haircut is going to be my next stop at Umbrella Salon, but considering the prices, I do have to create a budget for that first. But frankly, I do not think one should complain about the price here, I truly believe that the craft paired with artistry should be rewarded even if the price is high and when I can, I do prefer getting the right thing done for my hair, even if it is just once or twice a year, spending that time and money at the one time and gaining the pleasure of 1) liking what I see in the mirror for months and months and 2) not needing to invest any more time and even more money eventually to fix and redo and refresh frequently as I often needed to do with other salons. There is nothing worse for me than waiting for the end of those 3-4 hours of doing highlights and not achieving the result you were hoping for. I am currently living in Memphis but was in town for business last week. Umbrella Salon had the best reviews so I figured I would check it out! I had Anna cut my hair, she did a really nice job and was super friendly. She made sure to take the time to show me how I could style it in 10 minutes and how to style it by putting in a little more time. She's been there for 4 years and was really knowledgeable on their product (ORIBE) which is a great product and smells AMAZING! The one complaint I have is the service at the front desk. I don't mind waiting if I'm notified on a delay, I've been there, but Anna was running behind with a client and the front desk didn't say a thing. They let me sit there for 45 minutes. First time here this weekend because I wanted a change from the stylist I usually go to. As soon as I walked in, I felt like the salon was quite posh. It looked clean, somewhat stylish and open, definitely a plus. So I didn't really have a vision in my mind of what I wanted, and I knew I wanted highlights but not sure what color. I made an appointment and was given Jade when I arrived. He was very patient to consult with me on what I wanted and showed me swatches of colors available for highlights etc. which I appreciated a lot. Jade was also very meticulous when cutting my hair and coloring it, considering I was there for 3.5hrs. I love this place. Not only is it conveniently located near my work, but it is home to the mastermind who makes me look this damn good. Jacob has never failed to make my hair look amazing. He knows what he is doing and i have complete confidence in him and his work. I look forward to my visits with Jacob because not only does he make me look good, he makes me laugh. Update: 8.7.17 I had a retouch on Saturday, and wanted to bring the dark color even further down to cover up fading from my previously over-dyed hair. I got home, and right away noticed the color didn't take to well to my porous ends. It was scary to see a beautiful base fade into a muddied ash at the ends. Panicked, I called the salon- and they had me come back right away! I was worried it was unfixable- but that's impossible when you are in the hands of Kien and his assistant. They added some warmth back with a toner- and voila! Fixed the issue quickly, but what I most appreciate was their patience and professionalism while fixing it. Look forward to my next appt. I had my hair done by Kien today, and let me say. 1. Yes it is pricey 2. It's so worth it. My hair has gotten increasingly dry throughout the past year, and the years of blond highlights and regrowth simply wasn't helping. I could only get it to look good when I styled it, and frankly who has time for that. I wanted to go darker, with subtle icy highlights, keep my a-line. He agreed with the darker but instantly told me the a-line and highlights had to go, that natural was better. So he cut it into a bob, with just a few hand painted highlights at the face for warmth. Perhaps it was his confidence, but I let him do what he does best and he did not disappoint. Try Serino is an amazing hair stylist!!!!!! I have curly hair and always get stuck with boring cuts because stylists won't dare cut it above my shoulders. Not Try. She went for it, like I asked, and it turned out great, great, great!!!!! Why didn't I find Try earlier?!!! The whole vibe at Umbrella is cool. Definitely worth checking out. Went back to Umbrella after a couple years. Went in with frazzled, straw hair, and came out a total hottie. Forget who my stylist was but she rocked it! Next time I'll try cutting it a little shorter in the back so I can wear it all down without worrying about it being too weighty. read more
