Stopped by for the Sushi and Sake yelp event. We got to sit in the party room downstairs. The venue would be perfect for a rehearsal dinner or small gathering. The entire evening our wait staff was very pleasant and quick. We started with three appetizers, the beef negimaki, the fried gyoza, and the harimaki. The beef nagimaki was like a beef sushi roll. The teriyaki flavor was delicious and the crunch of the asparagus in the middle added a great texture. The fried gyoza or dumplings were just your basic fried dumpling. It was served with a house spicy sauce but I didn't get very much spice from it. The egg rolls or harimaki were my favorite. The perfect crunch on the outside and great flavors on the inside. Our second course was a variety of sushi. The DOC G roll which was fried had kani Kama in the inside and outside and cream cheese. The friend kani Cama in top was the best part, but I thought it tasted like your typical fried sushi. The BB roll had spicy shrimp and avocado. I didn't get a lot of flavor from this roll just a different texture from the avocado. We also had the AG roll which had tuna on the outside and shrimp tempura, garlic, and spicy mayo on the inside. Out of the three rolls we sampled this one was my favorite. It had the most flavor and was definitely spicy. For dessert we had mochi which was Japanese rice cake with ice cream. If you've never tried this before I recommend giving it a try. It is a different texture from the rice cake but it taste just for the dessert. They served it with multiple sauce options. This is my third visit to Umi. I live in Terre Haute and occasionally visit friends in Fort Wayne. The food was incredible. The Crab Rangoon was delicious and the firecracker shrimp were to die for! (I see some silly remarks on here about the server not knowing something...they can find 'it" out.) I have never knocked a place because of the knowledge of the server not knowing the type of Coke that was offered. I usually review the service.) All I know...the food is amazing --whether it has asparagus in it or if they used green onions. I guess I am not a traditionalist. However, I do know what is good and tasty-- this place has it all: atmosphere, great bar, delicious food, and friendly faces. read more

This is a new restaurant in Fort Wayne. I ran across this place going to the hospital out in the South West Area. It sits on Getz Road near Zambooca's (I have no clue if that bar still exists or not, it's been that long since I've been out there) Anyway, I took plenty of pictures and video. The restaurant is lit with blue lighting, there are several booths and private tables, I may have seen a couple of long tables but there weren't many. The bar area is pretty nice and intimate as well. The tables in the bar area can seat anywhere from 2-6 people, the bar has about 15 seats going all the way across the room. The bar wall (where the alcohol is displayed) has blue lighting but in the middle is a brick wall with their logo. The entire wait-staff is dressed in black, very nice and friendly people. Lets get to the menu...mind you I took photos and video as best as I could, however yelp doesn't allow more than maybe 10 seconds of video so I apologize everything is super quick. The menu is either digital (at the bar) or you'll receive a regular menu with prices and food descriptions (they also have a bar menu as well with different food options, I took a photo of that as well). I was completely fascinated with the digital menu and began looking through everything I possibly could. I know that they have digital menus at Applebee's and Friday's, but for some reason this was different. Every food and drink item had a full description with a photo...best part about it is that your food looks just like it did in the picture. They have so many varieties of drinks, whites, reds, sake, rose, pops/sodas, bourbons, fruity, semi sweet, and on the rocks. Everything was spelled out in the digital menu. Prices range for a regular plate of sushi anywhere from 12-18 dollars, which is typical, but they have the one big plate of sushi that costs about 70.00...it was huge with a variety sushi, several people can eat off of this plate. In regards to the sushi, they do have sashimi, seaweed wrapped, tempura, negiri (spelling?), and another type (i forgot) but is all looked amazing. The bar staff was extremely nice and helped with find a drink...I don't remember the name...I was too busy enjoying the ambiance (mind you there are flat screens in the bar area and in the private party room but not in the dining area), but this drink was sweet with a little tart, citrusy, very nice blend...I think it's called the Uncle Drew, mind you I'm not much of a drinker but this was enough for me. It was delicious, I actually wanted another but I couldn't but maybe next time when I go back. As for my entrée, I ordered Cowboy Roll. Basically (off of the description) it was a Shrimp Tempura roll with seared filet mignon, shittake mushrooms and onions sautéed in teriyaki sauce. I normally don't do teriyaki because it's too salty, but this one was a winner for me...HANDS DOWN!!!!! I know it's not the raw sushi like I normally eat, but I wanted to try something different and see how filet mignon would go with sushi...GENUIS!!!!! It's one of the best I've ever had. It wasn't salty nor overbearing, it was extremely good. I didn't see a dessert menu or items on the menu, I couldn't eat it anyway because I was full. I don't have as much of an appetite as I used to, but definitely check this place out, it's pretty nice!!! I'm a fan!!! One thing I forgot to add... The soap scrub in the bathroom... I like that even though this is a seafood/sushi restaurant that there are still lots of options for carnivores. The summer menu has a variety of new dishes (I had the cucumber salad-loved it) and the drink menu is endless. Our server was very helpful with suggestions as well. read more

On my first business trip to Fort Wayne, when I saw hotel row on Jefferson & 69, I was hoping I wouldn't be sentenced to Applebee's (apologies to Applebee's). No chance...FW is a foodie scene. And Umi is wonderful: Terrific atmosphere, outstanding wait staff, excellent food and drink with a remarkable array of pricing--something there for everyone. I had the house cold saki, which was unfiltered and very refreshing. The sashimi was wonderful, and Umi's take on mochi is a riot--who knew mochi are better with chocolate sauce and whipped cream? I only missed the sushi bar a little (whoever heard of a Japanese restaurant without a sushi bar??), but the owners' installation of an elegant 'regular' bar created a more upscale atmosphere. Bottom line: I'd go back in a second, and I'm VERY fussy about my sashimi. Great job! read more

Kind of obsessed with this place! Atmosphere is awesome, with the bar being our favorite spot for dinner. Service is absolutely excellent and the food is to die for. I am especially fond of the ceviche and the cowboy roll. I don't care for their use of fake crab given the price point and atmosphere. I think they should be doing better than that. But that being said, the Doctor Singh roll is amazing if you ask for no fake crab or simply take it off as it's part of the "toppings" atop the roll. The manager is attentive and always stops by to make sure you are pleased with everything. I highly recommend this place! You will not be disappointed! read more

We went here for dinner one night on a work trip. This place is really swanky and would be great for a date or girls night out more so than a work dinner. Regardless, the service was nice and both my colleague and I enjoyed our meals. I had the diva roll. It had great flavor and was really spicy! The only thing I would change is a little less on the outside of the roll. It was not possible to eat in one bite so you don't really get the full effect of the flavors. I did get full off of one roll, so though the prices are on the high side, the overall cost wasn't bad. My coworker got the salmon bento box and it was a great value. I don't think he could finish it, but he tried! The one thing I really would like this place to change is the ipads on the table. I get that it shows pictures of the food and drinks but it really stifles the conversation at the table. It just seems like something they have at Olive Garden doesn't really go in a nice place like this. read more

I highly recommend the Dr. Singh's​ Special, my wife loved her Orange Go Go roll and my daughter's Shoyu Ramen was enjoyed by all. Our waitress Melany was amazing and the digital menus were great to be able to read descriptions of rolls and ingredients. The sushi here was alright. It was very intricate and over designed in my opinion. I had the cowboy and doc g roll. The cowboy roll had a lot going on and I wasn't a huge fan but the filet on top melted in your mouth. The Doc G roll was amazing! Yummy and not too busy taste wise or presentation wise. This is by far the best Japanese restaurant in Fort Wayne. The building has a cool and modern vibe. When you enter the restaurant, you immediately think of big cities like Chicago or New York. The food is amazing, whether you like the traditional sushi or sashimi, or even if you're not too adventurous with seafood, they will have something for you. And i tell you, everything is truly excellent! The service is exceptional, all the servers are knowledgeable with the menu. We have nothing like it here in town. Wonderful Sushi! I never have liked Sushi. However, for our Anniversary I wanted to take me Wife to a restaurant that was special. We could not have been more pleased with our food, the atmosphere and our service. I arrived at the restaurant one hour before our reservation with a dozen roses for my wife. The wait staff took me to the private room where we would have our wonderful dinner and allowed me to leave the roses there. When we arrived for dinner all of the waitresses made a point to come by our table to congratulate us on our anniversary and make us feel welcome. The Sushi was by far the best quality food we have ever eaten. We highly recommend Umi as a top quality restaurant. We will go there every anniversary in the future. read more

Had heard lots of great things about this place of which there is a sister establishment in Terre Haute. Place has an extensive menu for both the extremely adventurous and those who want to play it safe and aren't that familiar with Japanese cuisine, sushi, etc. Being Friday during Lent, both my wife and I had seafood. Fish was extremely fresh and cooked to the proper doneness. We had a Lobster appetizer that was exceptional and I had Sashimi Tuna for an entree and my wife had a seafood combo plate which exceeded her expectations. Portions were appropriate, meaning they weren't served in a trough. I also had a Japanese cake for dessert that I would order again. My only quibbles were about service. We had to ask for silverware as neither of us are proficient using chopsticks and traditional utensils were not provided. read more

The sashimi/ sushi here is the best so far in Indiana. This is the best Japanese restaurant in the city. The ambiance and food was superb. The staff was friendly and caring, and would go out of their way to help. My faves were the salmon and white tuna sashimi. Every sushi roll I've tried exceeded my expectations. The California roll was nothing to write home about. It was stuffed full of celery and had very little artificial stick crab meat, and a tiny piece of avocado. The rice was unpleasantly flavored too. I usually get California rolls at Asakusa, which I must say are far superior. Their rolls are bigger and all ingredients are higher quality and you get more crabmeat and avocado. I will stick with Asakusa, you especially can't beat their happy hour prices! read more

Went to Zuni on a Friday night. We had 6pm reservations and since it was relatively early, the restaurant was not busy then, but as the night progressed it filled up quickly. So for weekends would definitely recommend reservations. We started with edamame as an appetizer and it was good. Hubby Steve and I ordered sushi. My grind ordered Sea Bass. The sushi was absolutely wonderful. The Sea bass was a huge portion & Mimi shared some with Steve. Both raved about it. The best part was probably our server, who was knowledgeable about the menu & was friendly and very attentive. My wife and I went to UMI for dinner and the food and service was excellent. I would recommend trying the Cowboy Roll. I have never had anything like it. It was unique and tasted great. EXCELLENT service! Beautiful restaurant. Tyler is quite knowledgeable about spirits. Sushi was OK. Way too much rice and too little of the product. Nigiri is probably the way to go and ask for a bowl of rice on the side. You must keep the fish 'supercold' in order to insure freshness. Some of the fish eggs (had 4 types) were just borderline fishy. Sushi is not suppose to have any fishy smell, AT ALL! Will be back because the service is 'A' Grade, quality personnel, and the GM is open to suggestions and realizing the customer's request. Nice experience. Ditto. read more
