I had a good experience at Umi, but was expecting to be blown away. The interior is flawless with modern décor. You can tell they put a lot of time into making sure this place was appealing to the eye. The setup seems a bit odd with broken up areas, but it seems to work. The menu is longer than I anticipated but I enjoyed that you could look at it via a tablet and see photos. I would recommend making a reservation if you plan to stop in on a Friday or Saturday evening. Our waitress was helpful and friendly, but didn't excite me about being there. We felt somewhat rushed by her, as well. We decided to start with some craft cocktails before ordering. I tried a lemon vodka house cocktail (can't remember the name). It was the perfect amount of sweet and I really enjoyed it. For an appetizer we tried the lobster scallop cakes. Oh my, they were tasty! Then for the main course I ordered two sushi rolls. I got a spicy tuna, which was just ok. And then I ordered the fire roll, which had great flavor and was packed full. My sister ordered the chicken fried rice and it was very bland, which was disappointing. I wish every item came with soup or salad, which is the usual at most sushi restaurants. Overall, food was good but I expected more. I did however, love the atmosphere and would return! read more

Nice variety of a menu and the sushi rolls looked delicious. I did a Sea Bass entree with the Tuna Squares as an app. Both were really delicious. The dressing on the salad with the Sea Bass was simple and very good. I will make sure stop back in. I sat at the bar by myself and the waitstaff was very friendly!! read more

We came out for a Yelp event and we're both very excited to arrive. I've heard alot of good things and of course was expecting the same results. The place is huge beyond huge. There is a deck, bar area, dining area, private dining downstaits, owners area and a whiskey room. (Don't hold me to it, there may be more to see!) The atmosphere is modern and open, as well as inviting. It makes you excited for what's to come. The menu is huge, but not so much a bad thing. There is definitely a lot of pro-sushi and non-pro sushi items. There is definitely something for everyone. Since we were at a tasting event, we were able to try a lot of things. My fiancee and I have never tried raw sushi before, but loved it. If you're a first timer, I recommend utilzing the ginger, wasabi, and soy as well as the sauces that accompany the dishes. I did not like the mochi IMHO it tastes kind of like vanilla ice cream wrapped in gum, but wasn't terrible. If you sit downstairs you will need the WiFi password as there isn't any cell service down below. The staff is friendy and seemed attentive. I'm expecting to come back and have the same qaulity experience. Over all I give it a solid 4. We will be back with an update. read more

Went here for a special event and they rolled out the red carpet! Before tonight, I had never ventured into raw fish sushi or as I call it - "real" sushi, so I don't really have anything to compare it to, but for a first timer, I wasn't disappointed in what Umi offered. We had samplings of the AG, Doc G, and BB rolls. The Doc G was absolutely delicious. Crispy on the outside and cream cheese in the middle that just melted in your mouth. My second favorite was the AG roll. It had several flavors that melded together well. All three of them were good. I did NOT like the Tuna Nigiri, but that is probably more a preference thing than that they did a bad job. I was able to eat the second one by dousing it in wasabi and ginger, but it was not pleasant. The atmosphere and decor of this place was impressive. I would say it's definitely a more dressy than casual type of restaurant, so if you're just coming from the pool in cutoff shorts and flip flops, you might feel a bit out of place. The ambiance of the restaurant is dim and romantic feeling - perfect for a date. They also offer space outside of the main dining area. There is a room downstairs that can seat about 40 guests, have a cocktail area, and a buffet. There was this awesome "owners lounge" that I'm not sure if they rent out or not, but looked like it belonged in an episode of Sopranos fully equiped with a poker table and all. There is also a whiskey room, but I didn't get a chance to scope that room out. Overall, this place is pretty awesome and feels out of place for Fort Wayne. I think you'll enjoy the experience and I am excited to go back and try more sushi! read more

A great place for cocktails and some pretty creative menu items. I'd love to see this restaurant do some educational travels to other explore other menus and bring that back to shake theirs up a bit. As a sushi lover I can say that I love coming here. The decor from the outside and the inside is just so inviting. It gives a calming aura while you enjoy your meal. The service is usually pretty good. I've had a couple instances either no one was at the host stand for a period of time or our server was not on top of it which happens. Food wise you have to try the fire roll. It's my favorite roll out of every sushi place I've gone to. It's so perfectly made and worth coming here to try out. My only complaint about the food has to be the lobster scallop cakes on the appetizer menu. I'm sorry but that has to go or be changed. It was so terrible that I had a few bites and no more. This place is worth trying out for anyone that's curious about it. I continually come back because of some of the sushi rolls that stay tried and true every time. read more

For my first experience at Umi, the service was excellent. Mattie was friendly, knowledgeable, and helpful. The ambiance was average as the background music wasn't pleasant at 12:30 PM. The decor was definitely upscale and modern looking. The food was a disappointment. They were out of Tempura mix and virtually everything involved a tempura breading. My chicken bowl was dry. Best in the Fort. Wife had a filet with teriyaki rice and potato croquet, and the rest of us enjoyed a variety of rolls and apps. Steak cooked perfectly to medium rare with a great salty crust. Simply amazing sushi. We shared the Umi sushi flight, Sun Roll, crab Rangoon, Gyoza, cowboy roll, Diva roll, and jalapeño popper roll amongst all four of us. Wow. Simply blown away. My new favorite sushi spot in Fort Wayne. They will be opening to the public on 1/4 but I got the chance to try Umi out during a soft opening. First off the decor is beautiful. Very sleek, modern look. The colors aren't very bright but the pops of color are on point. The bar area is very upscale-Chicago vibe. Right off the bar is their bourbon cellar room. The room boasts "lockers" where local celebs like the Mayor AND Larry Bird store their bourbon. Very, very cool! We sat in one of their semi-private booths. Highly recommend this seating for a more intimate get together with friends. Booths are large and can fit groups of up to 6 I would say. The menu can be previewed with pictures of the cocktails and rolls on a tablet type device. Very helpful to see picture of the rolls since some are hard to envision from the printed menu. I wish more places around town would do this! We started with cocktails and I tried the Umi 75 - their twist on a French 75. Very refreshing and the best part -- an edible hibiscus flower in the bottom. It was sweet and delicious. PS they used Three Rivers Distilling Co spirits! Woohoo for local flavor! We tried probably every roll on the menu and I cannot pick a favorite. Yeah. They were that good. But if I had to I would choose the diva roll. I can't remember all the goodness inside of it but seriously you gotta try it. They even have a roll wrapped in filet mignon....say what! Tuna cubes are also to die for. I judge sushi based on how much I have to drench it in soy sauce and wasabi. I didn't have to dip any of the rolls! They have that much flavor. Soy sauce and wasabi would drown out the flavors and probably ruin the rolls. They also have a meeting space available to rent out as well as a cool looking patio. Oh man. If you're looking for a new sushi place, go here!! The atmosphere, awesome. Our waiter was extremely helpful and friendly. The food!! The food was so so delicious!! You get regular menus, but you also get a tablet that shows you pictures and gives you descriptions of all the specialty rolls and drinks. Which was super helpful as I'm extremely indecisive. I really wanted to love this place but we left extremely disappointed. We ordered the Shrimp Yaki Udon, the Shoyu Ramen, Japanese Curry Udon and chicken tenders with rice off the kids menu. All 3 of the adult meals we had were flavorless. The only thing I can compare it to is that of a microwaved frozen dinner. The Shrimp Yaki Udon was $23 so I definitely expected more. Even the rice we had with the kids menu was horrible. It was obviously from the bottom of the pan that had been overcooking all day. 100$ later and I will never eat here again. I love this restaurant! The only reason I give it 4 stars is the service can be iffy, especially during lunch. They have a good house salad with spring mix instead of the standard iceberg & unique rolls (I like the Diva Roll & the Mango Roll when in season). They recently added crab rangoon to their appetizer menu - delicious with a very distinct crab flavor & a yummy chili sauce. The atmosphere is sleek & modern, yet cozy. Everything is ala carte & they have a full bar with interesting cocktails. Depending on what you order, you'll most likely spend more than other sushi restaurants in town. You can get a huge bento box with soup or salad between $11-$13 & I've yet to be able to finish it! read more

Husband and I took my great niece here for her graduation lunch. She wanted to go to Sapporo but we had a bad experience there and ask her to try Umi with us for the first time. The place is very nice inside. We had a big private booth, very nice. The waiter got our drinks and 2 appetizers. The calamari was good but a bit chewy and the pineapple shrimp app was really good. We then ordered Chicken fried rice ( Husband) a Bento box (niece) with a variety of items ( tempora veggies , sushi , rice , chicken) and I ordered the Shrimp tacos (3). The fried rice was kind of bland and Husband had to add some soy and was a huge portion but he only ate half andhe is a big eater sooo ,he took it home to doctor it up. Niece loved her Bento box and shared a piece of tempora with us (zucchini) was tasty. She took the rest home with her. And last butnot least my yummy shrimp tacos ! Oh they were tasty ! Hot n spicy too. I would get those again. All in all we liked the place and the server was very nice and took great care of us. Yes we would go again. Soon I hope. (Lol) read more

The sushi was so fresh and well prepared, and we were able to try Uni (sea urchin) for the first time. His favorite food is sushi and this was the perfect place to take him for a birthday meal. I'm giving this 3 stars because last night I had awful service. I usually come here with amazing service but last night idk what happened. We didn't get refills on our drinks all night. Our server didn't even ask if everything tasted well. By the time we were finished, we hadn't seen her for at least 20 minutes. We were the only people in the family area. My younger sister and I just sat there waiting for her to come by with our box. I've never experienced anything like this here. I never usually write reviews either, but I am today because the service sucked on Friday night when it wasn't even busy!! I'm disappointed for something considered "up scale". read more

Had heard good things. Met the Co-owner as we walked in and he was very kind. The orange go-go and dumplings were delicious the rest okay. We ordered three items only two tickets were placed. When my husband asked the waitress what each roll was on his plate she did not know. When my chicken rice bowl arrived while enjoy simplicity in my food this was beyond simple. It was just boiled chicken scrambled egg and rice. There was no sauce. Not sure it that was because I had to take it to go since that was the order that never made it to the kitchen. As for sushi the AG Roll and Doc G told were both really good. The AG is spicy, but the shrimp makes it so good. The Doc G has quite a bit of cream cheese so if you like cream cheese, it's for you. Small amount of food for your $. The food was delicious, but way too small of a quantity. $30 only gave me six small pieces of sushi. Had to have half a dinner after that meal. 2/5 stars because the food is good, otherwise because of the quantity alone... We ordered a few basic rolls but raced to our out of town guests on your use of the house chili oil. Our Dr. Singh was dry - nothing tied together the topping, no chili oil. The spicy California roll used to also have the chili oil, now just a little spicy mayo on top. What a disappointment. Definitely a miss and sucked for us entertaining out of town guests. read more

Our waitress was courteous, but she was not familiar with the menu at all. She couldn't tell us all of the beers on tap or what type of bottled beers they had at all. My husband ordered the California rolls and asked (before ordering) if there was anything besides vegetables in the roll and explained that I am allergic to shellfish. She said there was no meat at all, but was completely wrong as there was crab meat in them! Luckily, my husband noticed the mistake before I ate one. Lastly, I ordered the filet, and when she asked if I wanted the teriyaki sauce or plain, I said plain, please. However, when she brought our food, the steak was smothered in teriyaki sauce. It took quite some time to get our food, so I just scraped it off as I ate. This was our first (and last) time eating at Umi. read more

It was good. It wasn't as expensive as I had been led to believe. The beers were even reasonably priced. Total bill for two people with tip was $105, so maybe it was expensive, lol. They had a spicy sea bass dish that I ate. I was told by the waitress that if the menu says that it is spicy, then it is going to be spicy. It wasn't! It was good though. The sea bass looked good. My wife had a salmon dish that I thought was strange. I used to seeing salmon served as a lump if fish. This one was served in two 1/4" slices. She said it was good. Umi is the best Sushi restaruant I have legitimately ever visited. I have had sushi in Vegas, NYC, California, etc. but this tops it all! The Verve Roll is a shrimp tempura roll covered in fresh scallops, shrimp, and crab. AMAZING. The AG roll is out of this world. I haven't tried anything that isn't phenomenal on the menu. I HIGHLY recommend Umi to anyone and everyone! read more
