Very good Japanese food in such an unexpected location, a small business park in the middle of SLO wine country. Goshi is an absolute gem for anyone looking for good quality fish and dedication to preserving and translating Japanese flavors to the California coast. From the moment we walked in, the service was prompt and professional. The lunch specials seemed like the way to go. We got to try a few different rolls; although none blew my mind, each one was solid. The udon broth was a bit dark and salty, but the umami flavors were rich and complex. The shrimp tempura was well-fried and lightly battered. Honestly, the standouts were the miso soup and the yuzu sorbet mochi (perfect refreshing way to end off a meal). Price-wise, I might be spoiled coming from Vancouver, but I thought the dishes were all a bit pricy. So sad to say this, but the quality of the fish has really gone downhill. The main owner wasn't there, and unfortunately, whoever was making the sushi was serving chewy nigiri. The albacore nigiri was even cut into two pieces, which was surprising. The fish tasted fishy and the texture was very chewy, and the service wasn't great either. I really miss the way this place used to be before they opened at the Public Market. This was our go-to spot, so it's especially disappointing to see the quality decline. My MIL loves coming here when we are in town and Goshi's is surprisingly good. While it's not located near the coast, you can tell that they make a point of getting fresh fish and using quality ingredients. I enjoy ordering standard California-style rolls that are made with care- not too heavy on the sauce and have a cleaner mouthfeel than what you find elsewhere. We usually order the lunch specials with a roll or two to share and enjoy the seaweed salad and cucumber salad with our main course. They are pretty prompt on service so you might be able to have lunch and get a full charge on your EV close by instead of just waiting in your car. read more

Not gonna lie, my sushi expectations for Paso weren't high, but we had heard a few times that there was a good spot in town. On our most recent visit, when someone from the Bay Area recommended it to us, we decided it was worth the shot. I'm happy to report that Goshi proved me wrong, and I will be making this a regular meal stop on my Paso trips! We came at lunch time and got the tempura and sushi lunch special which came with 4 pieces of nigiri, shrimp and vegetable tempura, miso soup and two sides. For the sides we got the seaweed salad and rice. We also got a Yellowtail roll, Scallop dynamite roll, Tai nigiri, and Unagi nigiri, all for the two of us to share. We had been wine tasting so we went kinda big and ended up leaving pretty full. Everything was great, there wasn't anything we didn't like or wouldn't order again. The unagi was quite possibly even the best I've ever had, it just melted in your mouth - would for sure get this again next time but just for myself and not to share so that I could enjoy even more of it. We sat at the sushi counter and had great service from the chefs, they checked in with us a bunch to make sure we liked everything and to see if we wanted more. They open at 5p for dinner; they close between lunch and dinner. My wife and I have been here a couple times, and loved it both times. The sashimi here is SO fresh. That alone makes Goshi worth visiting. The tempura is also excellent. The staff were so hospitable to the point that I had a spicy California roll but it had a mayo on it that I did not find tasty. Instead of just accepting it, they replaced the order. My favorite roll was probably the seared albacore and the Chris roll. They also give out veggies in a sesame peanut sauce that is to die for. First time here while visiting the city and had some issues with the seating and waitor. First off - the sushi I got was the chris roll which was great! It was a bit much on the garlic chips and the sushi was kinda soggy from the yakidare on the bottom . We also got the special spicy albacore roll which had the perfect amount of garlic chips and perfect amount of sauce. With the seating, we got a call when our seat was ready but when we got in we still waited and they gave is the wrong seat. As we were about to leave, we stop by the restroom and overheard the girl waitor talking about how we ordered 2 rolls/soup and didnt tip. I asked whether it'd be possible to sear some engawa, and the staff graciously accommodated even though it wasn't explicitly listed as seared (though they only had one piece, so they substituted the other with just halibut instead). The quality of the nigiri by themselves was quite good, and I'd recommend asking for the engawa if given the opportunity. The rolls themselves were fine, I thought the composition of the rolls relied heavily on vegetables but the quality and taste were still good. Wow, you must come here if you are ever in Paso and craving sushi. I haven't enjoyed sushi like this since we were in Japan! The service was so friendly and all of the staff were happy to help each other, which allowed for a quick and easy flow! The restaurant is very clean and welcoming with nice soft lighting. Been in paso for 6 years and finally got around to try this place. It was voted best sushi spot in the county last year so I had extremely high expectations. First off our food took at least 20-25 mins to arrive and the server made a mistake in our salad order and gave us the wrong one. Secondly I wanna point out I've tried sushi all over the states and this place was really stingy with the amount of fish they put on my dragon roll. It was okay but not 11 out of 10... Then the Japanese mackerel I have no idea how they prepare it but it wasn't fresh it was boiled or something and they put a piece of rice paper on top to make it look shinny. This is my favorite sushi I always order it anywhere I eat sushi, flavor was gone. And visual was just not right to out this piece of paper on top. At last we had ordered another roll because our initial ordered was messed up but it took around 30 mins to arrive. We denied it, and they took it back no charge. This was dinner #2 of my 10 yr wedding anniversary. We went there and having already eaten next door at junction, we were looking for some sushi delights. we ordered: * the kids bullet train * toro (daily special) * amaebi (sweet shrimp) * smoked salmon * yellowtail belly * ikura (salmon roe) * uni (daily special) * king mackerel (aji daily special) the sake was over priced by a lot. how do i know? the priced the soju at $14 which is crazy considering that it is usually $10 in silicon valley. The service was so-so. our server was friendly and nice but they didnt get us our soy sauce plates and so when the food arrived, we had no way to eat it. The food took FOREVER. This is sushi, right? They cut the fish and put it on rice and serve it. We didn't order rolls or anything complicated. We ordered nigiri sushi. Other tables were getting their food way ahead of us. This was super annoying. Again not our server's fault. She was really really nice. The ambiance was nice but felt rushed. I don't think I felt like I was valued as a customer there. The food overall was unremarkable. It wasn't bad, it wasn't good. The best part was the fried heads of the sweet shrimp. But it wasn't worth the price. So now let's talk about the uni. I spent $25 on 2 pieces of uni that I had high expectations on freshness and taste. This landed so flat that I had to make a comment. I don't comment on food in general but this was so disappointing, I felt that they should know that the uni they were serving was incredible sub par. One of the workers there tried to convince me that "this is how japanese uni is" which is complete garbage since I've had japanese uni and I've had uni in plenty of other places and none of them were like this. their uni was * dry * dark orange (like oxidated and you knew it was old) * fishy * tasted like that metallic old uni that you get from bad sushi places. sorry lady, that was not good uni and if you insist that that is "japanese uni" then you're making "japanese uni" into a bad name. No one will eat that and think that that was good food. I only ate it so I could at least say that I tried it to tell you how bad it was. To be honest, I was scared to eat it because I thought I would get food poisoning. And actually when i did get back to the hotel room I was on the toilet for a full hour getting this stuff out of me. To their credit, they did remove the uni from my tab. So thank you for that. But to try to convince me that that uni was good was a bit insulting. This sushi is very authentic Japanese. The food reminds us of when we traveled Japan. It brings back so many memories. When my Japanese and Chinese friends come into town they all want to go to Goshi's and love the food. I have been taking my kids here since they were 5 so for the past 17 years this place has been a favorite and frankly the best on the central coast. We've loved this place for many years, and while there have been some changes over time (raised prices, new decor & tables/chairs that cost money, numerous staffing changes, somewhat smaller portions over time), the one constant has always been quality sushi. And if you've ever had bad sushi, you know how important quality is! So much to love about their menu: Appreciate the extensive list of specials. Yellowtail Tataki appetizer is delicious. The hand rolls are incredible. And they have actual wasabi if you ask - not just the green horseradish paste! Excellent green iced tea. Generous ginger palate cleanser. Nigiri servings are exquisite. Party of 5 going in after a lovely wine tasting nearby and very hungry. We all got a version of the Goshi dinner and everyone enjoyed their choices. Chicken, salmon and beef with excellent tempura and suchi/sashimi voices. I had the rainbow roll and hamachi side order and they were great and fresh! The staff was very attentive and the place was packed! My MIL got splashed with water when we got served by our novice waitress and the owner came out to check on us and comped her dinner and gave her a gift card!
