I've eaten here before and had good experiences, so I was shocked by what I found tonight. The food quality was terrible, the bathrooms were filthy, and service was practically nonexistent. Honestly, by the time I left, I felt like I needed a shower and a tetanus shot. That's obviously an exaggeration, but it reflects how unclean the entire experience felt. I would not come back. The restaurant was clean, and the staff was friendly, which I do appreciate. The sushi was the only part of the meal that was decent. Even then, it was nowhere near good enough to justify the $29.99 price. Everything else felt extremely overpriced for the quality. Saturday 1pm. I was surprised to see this huge buffet place to be empty on a Saturday lunch time. We were seated as we got into the restaurant. $29.99 per person for weekend lunch. Drinks were $5 ish as the total bill came out to be over $70 for two people. Yes, it's expensive. I would say sushi quality was not bad and selection was good. Other food options such as fried fish, etc. were below average in my personal opinion. I only saw value in sushi selections. I would not come here with someone who does not eat sushi, because then $29.99 for average American Chinese food for one person is extremely expensive. But also I don't eat much either so even if I wanted sushi, I would go elsewhere where I can get better quality for smaller portion with less than $29.99 price tag. read more

Chef Joseph here. Ate at UMI for fathers day and they were offering lobster. While the lobster had be cooked so long you had hard time getting meat out of the shell and when you did, you could not eat it ( tough). I don't understand why people do not complain, surely my lobster wasn't only one like this. Octopus also tough not cooked right.. snails over cook can't get them out of thier shells. Friday night dinner at Umi in Castleton felt like dining in a galactic marketplace with endless choices, organized chaos, and the occasional inner battle over how many plates you can handle before your body waves the white flag. At around $30 per person for an all-you-can-eat experience, it's a fair price for the variety they offer. The lineup spans across galaxies with sushi, Chinese American favorites, ramen, hot pot, and more. The buffet area was well kept, clean, and the food looked fresh with no signs of anything leftover from the Clone Wars. The hot pot station deserves a special mention. Frozen meats and vegetables were neatly organized next to the sauce bar, which felt like the Jedi Temple of condiments. Pro tip: don't overload your plate the first or second round. You'll need stamina and strategy to get through this feast. Boba drinks in the dessert fridge were a pleasant surprise and a fun touch. The automatic 12% service fee might catch some diners off guard, but it's clearly posted at the hostess station and can be removed if you ask. For groups of six or more, the service fee bumps up to 15%. Still...the price for the selection isn't bad. Overall, Umi was a great experience. My friend and I went for lunch on a Friday. I have to say that walking in the place is clean and beautiful. The selection of foods is certainly impressive. We were then sat immediately, our drink order taken, and we went to get food. Unfortunately, that's where wonderful ended. For the vast number of choices, the food is less than impressive. I visited recently on a Friday around 7 pm. I was impressed at the sheer volume of food options. It had a large sushi bar. Servers were quick to clear the table, and to provide drinks and refills. What caused me to pause was how few patrons were there relative to the size of the seating area. So I stayed more to the fried and baked dishes. Frog legs and sesame balls were my favorite. Food was mediocre this last visit. Not even hot just warm. No crab legs just a Cajun seafood mix. I don't eat anything with any spice to it but I was able to eat out with ease so I'm not sure why they call it Cajun. Hot pot has no flavor dispute adding multiple spices. I recently saw Umi advertising and visited before, so I figured to revisit. Lord and behold, not sure why I expect much, especially when there is Han or The Journey. The food in the buffet section were pretty cold/lukewarm, and the selection of items to put for "hotpot".... might as well call it a bowl of soup vs "hotpot" - There was basically no meet and just some oddly looking seafood, which is questionable to consume already. The service isn't shabby, but not sure how adding "12%" service fee to every bill and not call it a tip seems right. I usually tip 20% so I'll add some extra for the staff anyway, but calculating service fee part of the total bill is kind of funny in a scummy way. Anyway, hope business go well, but if its to continue as is, the price for what you get is pretty rancid. read more

It is with regret I write this review. I wrote one sometime ago and applauded the merits of the restaurant After our visit last night, I can no longer sing praises. First, we walked in and were greeted. Followed waiter to a table where another server laid down napkins and silverware. Asked what we wanted to drink and left The booth we sat in had tares in the seat and wall board. The condiments were greasy and the flooring was coming up. Someone had put a roll of duct tape on it but it was a safety hazard The lighting fixtures were all dull with grease. It did not feel clean. We went for sushi, probably the best thing there. Some of the sushi I got was dried out from sitting. Even the tuna was like rubber. I could not eat it. They were making sushi while we were there and made sashimi It was fresh. They had tuna just as a slice. Wonderful. They used to have stone crab claws. No more. Cold tasteless snow crab instead A lot of dishes but I have an allergy to soy, most I could not eat No refill of beverages and for the record they don't sell adult beverages The ladies room was clean. Mops buckets, etc thrown in the corner. No paper towels on a roll. Just a roll sitting on the sink. I had an overall sense that it was not sanitary. All things considered this restaurant was a big disappointment. I did see a price decrease from out last visit but in my opinion, a lower price doesn't mean you can not have a well kept business As we got into the car my husband said, "Such a shame it was so nice the last time we were there". Iprobably madee a tactical error by visiting this establishment at 3 PM in the afternoon seeing as it is a buffet. I would highly recommend going there during lunch or dinner hours when it's busier and they're going through more food. As it was, the food was not very fresh, and someone was overcooked, probably from being under warmers for some time. They were preparing for dinner however, many of the dishes they were setting out fresh or reserved for dinner customers only. They have a good selection, and if it was fresh and hot and cooked properly, it would be a very nice place. The sushi was good, but there is better in town and I did not try the hot pot. As a sidenote, I always check the bathrooms. Everywhere I go, and the bathroom how do I appear to be repurposed stalls missing some paint on the doors comparable to a average gas station bathroom. read more

For the price we were able to eat and try a lot of different dishes. I've been to an Umi buffet in another state and comparing the two, this restaurant didn't have as many fancy items like abalone, the sushi didn't seem as fresh and the hotpot items were lacking in my opinion. It has a big selection but I did notice that food wasn't switched as often (makes sense it not many people are dining to eat the food). I appreciate the spaciousness of the layout. This is a large place with a good variety of food selections. They have sushi, sashimi and the usual fruit and salad selections. There are many seafood choices as well as habachi and now a hot pot area. The food is decent but the service is severely lacking. The greeter who seated us took our drink order and placed the paper on the table and it took a long time for someone to come fill it and then they never came back to check if we needed anything. There was one waiter who was taking care of one entire section by himself and was definitely overwhelmed. They would be wise to just install a drink dispenser so you could serve yourself. There are crab legs on the buffet but they are served cold and I didn't see anyone taking them. There were some desserts like ice cream and pudding that were fine. The only thing is there are no directions letting you know that you need to get your own silverware (which mostly are plastic and the plates are plastic) as well as no instructions on how to navigate the hot pot. No one came to clear the used plates from our table. The buffet is $29.99 per adult and there is already a 12% gratuity added to your check so you "do not have to tip" the percentage is higher for parties of 6 or more. Although they do have a wide variety, I do not think we would make the 40 minute trip again. We originally were coming to this side of town to try a different restaurant, but the wait for that one was already 45 minutes, so we decided to choose this. read more

I really don't enjoy writing negative reviews but this experience was very unpleasant, The restaurant was not very clean, and we were seated at an unwiped table with other peoples drinks still on the table, and we were not really ever checked on although I doubt that was out servers fault as it appeared our server was the only one doing any work for our entire section. The food did not taste fresh and overall was very overpriced. I recommend going elsewhere for your seafood needs. I will not be returning. We came here right after they opened on a Monday, so they weren't especially busy. This buffet is pretty huge, and there's lots and lots to choose from. I enjoyed everything I ate there, including the sushi which had just been put out. We have eaten here many times now and still love it. There are alot of sushi options and they are much better than typical buffet sushi. We also love the candied pork belly and sweet pineapple sticky rice. The service is usually very fast and friendly. They also changed how you tip. They just add 12% to the total so you don't have to tip anymore. I'm fine with this as it makes sure everyone gets paid fairly. I recommend going early for lunch so everything is super fresh. If you enjoy sushi, crab legs, shrimp, this has a great variety. Umi is an Asian seafood buffet chain. They have locations out east in NJ. This is like a more expensive, upscale Journey. There are authentic dishes like salt and pepper shrimp with the head on, crawfish, boiled beef. Delicious ramen, tonkotsu. You choose the accommodating number and then grab food, go back for your bowl in a few min. There is a whole table of bubble tea, so don't order a drink at the table for the extra charge. They charge kids by how tall they are, and lunch/dinner prices are the same during the weekend. They have TONS of sushi and sashimi. Their dessert was the basic fruit, cake and a couple of coolers of ice cream bars and chocolate, strawberry, vanilla. This atmosphere of the buffet is so inviting and open! I love that it's not dull! It's really a great place to have fun and celebrate special moments like birthdays etc. If you are someone who enjoys a variety of food or has a family that does, then this is your buffet! It's worth the money for sure! Milk tea, hotpot, ramen etc is all included! They have pizza and fries for your more simple eaters too! My fav foods were: Hibachi chicken, Chicken skewers, chicken lo mein & the pineapple rice. My little brother tried just about everything! He is more brave! Visited Umi recently with a co-worker. Upon arrival, we were promptly greeted and seated. Then our waiter took our drink requests. Approaching the buffets was impressive because there were a lot of them and there was much to choose from. I noticed some steamed crabs that were cut in half, so I grabbed one of those. I grabbed some other tasty vittles as well. I tried the crab and it tasted terrible. So I tried a different part of it and it was still terrible. It tasted nothing like traditional crab legs. Lesson learned. The chicken dishes were very tasty and I would recommend those. Safe bet there. The sushi was pretty tasty too and there was a good selection. The seaweed wasn't all that great. The crab rangoon was pretty good as were the stuffed oyster shells. My coworker had a couple things that he didn't enjoy either, but that told us the food was authentic. I really enjoyed it. I had watched video previously and had an idea how it worked. My wife loves crab and lobster and I'm more fish and shrimp. I was interested in the hot pot. I visited Umi on 9/26/25 around 6:00pm, the service was good and the atmosphere was great. The food on the other hand was a total let down, there was no Oxtail, steak, or lobster. I think the owners of Umi really envisioned a place that was very elegant. The positive is that it is very bright and it is very clean and there is a huge selection of food. In addition, the service was very attentive. I think the first issue was that we went on a very off day My husband and I visited Umi on a Monday evening which is very traditionally slow. The issue with that is that food does not turn over very quickly which means you will find a number items that have visibly been sitting under the heat lamp for quite a while. Finally my biggest shock and disappointment was the price. For two people it cost us almost $90. I can guarantee we did not eat $90 quality or quantity of food... I used to like this place as they had sashimi all you can eat. However, at this time, the food, especially sushi and sashimi, was not good at all. I could tell from their taste that they were old. I couldn't eat them. Also, they removed some good food items in the food section. The hotpot items were not good and looked old. I hope they improve food quality soon. read more

My husband and I went on opening weekend as we were craving a variation of seafood. Putting our name in was super easy while they said it would be a 20 min wait, it was less than 5! The buffet has a ton of seafood options and sushi! Everything was fresh and kept getting refilled quickly. The one thing I was they had was tools to crack open crab legs, but we made due with forks.
