Every time I order I get a free roll in my order(I believe it is a sweet potato roll) and it is so good. The eel sauce is excellent and is thick and sweet without being too much so. It's a small gem and located next door to another sushi restaurant called nikko but I was fine with the small comfortable space it's very busy with pick up orders and I know why this sushi is delicious, the vegetable spring roll was yummy, even the miso soup was good. I'm probably the only person that thinks this but Umi Sushi is not great quality sushi at all. I never understood the high ratings for this place. We came in the past based on all the raving reviews. It's walking distance from our house and that's why we've stopped by here from time to time. I've tried speciality rolls and sashimi platters and the quality is just not there on several occasions. The staff members are very friendly and they tend to upgrade you on some fish options if you order a large sashimi tray. They also give you free sweet potato roll when you order over $30. What made this place worth it in the past was their amazing 20% off deals on all orders. They haven't had this promotion in a long while (maybe through management change). For me sushi is good if the rolls taste different from one another and it doesn't all taste the same at the end The service is great / they're attentive and friendly. Excellent quality sushi for the price, I'm very happy to see a restaurant like this in Fresh Meadows. The salmon teriyaki with rice and miso soup and vegetables is a reasonable $17 for two nicely sized salmon fillets. The teriyaki sauce is a little mild but very nice. I usually avoid getting salmon delivered because it doesn't travel well and seems to often arrive overcooked but theirs was still mostly tender. Would definitely order this again. Both specialty rolls I ordered were delicious. The Pink Lady comes with crabstick, avocado, and spicy mayo with salmon on top. The mayo must have been applied sparingly to the inside of the roll instead of drizzled generously on top, it was barely noticeable, which sushi purists will appreciate (I can do either way). The Fire Roll was described as having Kani salad inside with spicy tuna on top. Instead what arrived had solid crab stick inside like the Pink Lady, with crunchy cucumber alongside it, and again no mayo that I could detect like it typically in kani salad. But the roll was still excellent! The crunch of the cucumber balanced the soft creaminess of the spicy tuna, which I thought was really good quality. It was also nice they didn't cover it in crunch, so the tuna itself stood out. This just might be a new favorite, can't wait to try more! read more

Dishes We've Had: - Ika Tempura: I thought that these would be fried squid tempura rather than common fried calamari rings. - Shrimp Tempura Roll: Meh; only slightly crisp. - Honey River Roll: Like a shrimp tempura roll combined with an eel roll. Not only are the staff really friendly, but they also give small appetizers for everyone at the table such as edamame, miso soup, salad, and sweet potato rolls. The inside isn't big so I had to wait about half an hour for a table. I saw that more people actually came for take out. I ordered a few rolls, sashimi, tempura udon, beef teriyaki entree, and the beef negimaki dinner box. Both the beef teriyaki and negimaki were very saucey. The meat was tender and not overly chewy. The rolls were also decent but not the beat quality. The shrimp tempura that they have here isn't the best. The shrimps are really small and the batter is pretty thick but I guess if you like a lot of batter, then you'd like it. I've also gotten their party platters before which they also gave their sweet potato rolls and miso soup for free as well. GO! DO IT! YES! THIS PLACE! I wrote a review for this place almost 10 years ago and if it were up to me I would renew those vows every year. This is my favorite restaurant in New York. I LOVE this place and there's soo many reasons you should too- the food, the service, the owners, the food! I've tried a great deal of the menu but I highly recommend the specialty rolls. They bless with complimentary miso soup but other great appetizers include gyoza, shumai or rock shrimp. In terms of rolls the volcano roll (with crab), dragon roll and new mango roll are my favorite but there are still so many worth trying. They also give complimentary sweet potato rolls for dessert which are delicious if you still have room. If you have never been here the best course of action is to order a bunch of different things and accept that you will be back again. Happy eating! read more

Decent sushi spot right across from St John's University in Fresh Meadows. Somewhat unassuming - make sure to look for the red awning. It's pretty tiny but had enough tables for everyone who was looking to dine-in. My only qualm is that they used the front tables to hold the takeout orders and squeezed all of us diners towards the back very close to each other. But they diligently checked vaccination cards, so that made me feel better. We ordered edamame to start, and a Naruto Roll, Gentleman Roll, and New Mango Roll.
