I live in Jacksonville and I love sushi, that said for the second time I've had a bad experience regarding service. My daughter and I made our order, she ordered a beverage along with myself. My drink was brought and then our food. After eating for a few minutes my daughter realized that she never got her drink. At that point she said "well forget it" when we received the check and I noticed that we got charged for the drink she didn't receive. Yes, we got charged. Upon exiting, I noticed that she never asked us if we were done and didn't remove our plates. I don't like to be picky but last time I ate there, my order got messed up somehow and my family was done with their meal before I received my order. The food I have no complaints about. PROS: -Clean, organized, nice atmosphere, care is taken in the table settings with a nice presentation and chopsticks laid on the napkin so they're not touching the table. -Hostess very friendly -All food was fresh, fish was delicious, presentation excellent. CONS: -Menu has the Japanese names of fish, but the server/hostess was well-informed. -It was not busy but the food took fairly long to come out, granted it's sushi and the care in preparation/presentation is an art and is to be respected. -A bit pricey CONCLUSION: Overall very good, highly recommend. Countless visits here. Tonight's was the best by far. Has always been great but have to admit service and food quality took a little hit for several months in 2019. What I've noticed? My last visit November 2019 was with a chef I didn't recognize and whose creations were lazy. And the servers were lagging. Disappointed we didn't return until tonight. First thing I notice? The really good chef is back and the servers and line cooks are different. Had to wait a couple minutes for a table, full house, two young ladies serving. And these two were rocking it! Totally on top of hustling thru organized kaos. Cleared a table as quick as they could and treated us great for whole visit. The kitchen and servers got our food to us in a very timely manner. And the food was just beyond outstanding. Raw oyster special was amazing. Calamari, the best we've ever had there and it's always been great. Tonight's was a different presentation as well. Wonderfully done dish! The seafood Udon noodles was another new presentation and absolutely the best version I've had here. It's so worth the little extra wait it can take to make it up for you. Loaded with great seafood. My wife said her roll was excellent, to the point she didn't want to taste my Udon noodles and ruin the lingering aftertaste of her Mt.Everest roll. We came here about a month ago with a friend from out of town. We all really enjoyed our lunch! We decided we wanted to come back today since it was so good and we were craving Sushi. Online hours said it closed at 2:30. We drove from Gold Hill to Jacksonville looking very much forward to another delicious sushi lunch. I have been to Umi sushi many times over the years, in fact it has become my favorite sushi spot in the Rogue Valley, unfortunately tonight this restaurant has climbed down that ladder. My mother, younger siblings and I arrived at approximately 5:40 on a Wednesday night (not a seemingly busy time) and it took 15 minutes just to get our drink orders and the menus, another 20 to take our order and we were anxiously awaiting over an hour, not even to be served our Appetizers. Maybe it's the placement of the table? (In the back corner) or maybe it's the kitchen? Not sure. Usually we have waitresses that are eager to help, but tonight I felt like a bother. Great food but service absolutely sucks! You call in and they say 45 min..I live two min away. I get there 47 min after I hang up placing order and they have not even started it. No apologies...btw the line cook look pissed that the cashier was even asking where the order was. Perhaps if they took less smoke breakers on the tables behind they restaurant they could actually make order on time for their loyal customers...but after this experience the loyalty may be drifting away. read more

We arrived in Jacksonville late and were craving sushi. We didn't expect much when we walked into this little sushi joint. But we were pleasantly surprised. We had the 15 piece sashimi and tried three different rolls. All the ingredients tasted super fresh. They also use real crab meat in most of their rolls. Every dish we tried was well constructed and balanced without overwhelming amount of sauce smothered all over the rolls (which is very common in a lot of American sushi joints). The price is also super reasonable here. Tips: if you prefer fresh crab to imitation crab, you can ask the kitchen for the fresh stuff for an extra 2 dollars per roll. read more

Absolutely the worst sushi I think I have ever eaten. Went here with a friend as we were traveling on a business trip. We ordered a load of rolls and started with the jalapeño appetizer. It was deep fried but cold with a smear of cream cheese and no flavor. We only had a few bites and left it. The waitress asked if we enjoyed it, we said it wasn't our favorite. Then the rolls came. First was veggie roll. No flavor, really bland. Each roll after that (4 more) just blah! When we were done we left most of the food, they asked if we wanted a box. Should have been a clue that we left piles of food on the table. Skip this place! read more

A terrible experience. The kitchen staff, sushi rollers and waitress were not rude, they seemed to treat us as we were an inconvenience to them. I never felt welcome. I always sit at the sushi bar, you get to see everyone's dishes prepared, watch the kitchen and talk with the chefs. When we walked in I felt as if the employees were hung over or exhausted and were forced by managers to be there. We arrived at 515 pm. Ordered the vegetable tempura, it was amazing! Small portions but amazing. Tatani Ahi on shredded daikon. Was small portions, a bit pricy for size of portions, was amazing. Okay so two dishes delicious, uncomfortable wait staff and unpleasant employees, I can work with that. Now......the sushi, as a rule of thumb if fresh fish smells fishy do not eat it. Do not serve it. There is a distinct difference between the smell of fresh fish and fishy fish. My mackerel smelled very fishy, I had bitten into first sashimi to find it, of a peculiar taste, against better judgement I didn't spit it out. Huge mistake !!! The spider roll said crab, what I didn't expect was fake crab in a place that sells raw fish. Umi distinguishes fake and genuine by crab, and real crab. Only to find this after being served crab, and re reading the menu. Had I known that when ordering , I would of ordered nothing and left. A genuine sushi establishment does not serve fake fish. Shame on you! Spicy tuna had, not fresh tuna, no spice and lack of flavor. We left 2 spider rolls out of 5, 3 out of 7 spicy tuna rolls. This was after traveling all day and was famished. 15 minutes after leaving my stomach hurt so bad, had trouble standing. My partner asked me to pull over so she could vomit. You know you've been hustled, when you leave food on plate, turn down a to go box, and not the waitress or chefs ask how the food was. Shame on you umi. Shame on you! read more

Yes! So glad Umi has stood the test of "Valley Time" (which doesn't mean eternity, but certainly means it has endured "some" time--almost 4 years!). With the closure of what we believe to have been the best Asian in the Valley (Thai House, down the street), we needed an alternative for our weekly fix, and this serves well. We often come in here late, and always feel welcome. The staff is welcoming and always willing to accommodate my dietary needs and so forth. Food is very consistent. We order a hodgepodge of appetizers and sushis--my wife sticks to the more exotic while I'll dive into vegetarian dishes. Price wise, everything is reasonable, and food is fast and fresh. Dig on the egg rolls and edamame. I also enjoyed the miso soup (no biggie, but was tasty) and some excellent teriyaki noodles with tofu; they were a bit on the sweet side--ask them to spice them up a bit for some more balance.
