    Grapefruit Guava
    Michele L.

Pretty neat little find here! Umi Tea seems to be sharing the space with the ramen shop next door, but they have their own window for ordering. This plaza that they're located in is pretty small, but they got their own parking lot, so no need to worry about not being able to find a spot. When we arrived, it was actually pretty empty. Umi Tea is located right at the end of the alley (if you walk from the parking lot). Otherwise if you're reaching this spot from the sidewalk, it's located right down the stairs. Originally, we thought we had their hours wrong because they had a 'closed' sign! But thankfully, they just closed for a bit because one of their workers (or maybe the only worker today) walked out for a bit. Thankfully, they opened their ordering window for us. I guess they kind of heard us from inside or we just hit the right timing! I opted for their Grapefruit Guava. One of their recommended drinks and for a good reason I'd say! I usually opt for no sugar because I think natural sweetness of real fruits are enough for me, but the server/cashier said they don't do sugar in their drinks (I think? Maybe I heard wrong, but I'm glad there's a no sugar option either way). Their sign says default sweetness is 25%, so I'm a little confused. I think this guy may have been the only guy handling everything because another party came after us, but no one else came to handle the cash register. That party ended up calling to place their order, which was a tad funny. As for my drink, it was quite refreshing! I tasted more grapefruit than guava, but you can definitely taste both inside the drink. Because it's naturally sweetened by the fruits inside, it's not overly sweet, so perfect for me! Good size drink too! Too bad they ran out of Goji Berry Long'an, otherwise I think I would try that one since it sounds more unique! Next time though!

    Right next to Ohlone College!

I'm really disappointed with the drinks that we got here... I had really high hopes since they had a cute logo and there were so many promising reviews. I came for National Boba Day and my friends wanted to have a little get together to celebrate. I came during the afternoon and ordered a good list of drinks: Lychee Green Tea, Strawberry Green Tea, Goji Berry Long 'an, Passionfruit Mango Green Tea, and a couple Uji Matcha Lattes. * The fruit teas were all okay. Nothing special. There was a very slight subtle tea taste... Mainly just tasted like fruit-flavored water to be honest. * The Goji Berry Long 'an was my favorite. Really refreshing! Pretty flavorful and loved the fruit bits. * The Uji Matcha Lattes didn't have a strong matcha taste and seemed watered down. * I was NOT a fan of the Umi Matcha Pudding... It tasted really bland, not sweet, and chalky. It was not custard-like or flavorful at all. Overall, I'm pretty bummed that our drinks were less than medicore and not really enjoyable. My friends and I all agreed that each drink was not reaching our expectations... and we ended up going to another boba place to quench our cravings. Side note: the customer service was not bad! You order at a cute window in an alley way across the street from Ohlone College. The cashier was pretty nice, but seemed frantic that I had a big order... which is understandable for a small business!

Tired Umi Tea and wasn't that impressed, ordered the basics, House Black Milk Tea and some Popcorn Chicken. The House Black Milk Tea was decent, but the boba itself was not. It was kinda hard and not soft and chewy, might have been sitting a while. The Popcorn Chicken was overly baked, and not your traditional Taiwanese style with the fried Basil you'd see at other places. It was also quite expensive at $10.25. I'm not sure if I'd recommend this place. Kind of a hidden place as well. The service was fine, and not much ambiance.

Umi Tea is across from Ohlone College and also adjacent to EE Cooking. offerings: snacks, fresh milk tea, milk tea, fruit tea drink: lychee green tea (4.50) 22 oz. less sugar/ice -still very sweet, sweetness overpowered the green tea -sweetness may be lychee syrup 3.5 stars good value but too sweet for me.

It's crazy I haven't tried this place yet even though I live 5 minutes away. Like the rest of 2020, I'm going to blame COVID on this one as I try to stay home as much as I can. Location / Shop: It's what I always dreamed what an efficient boba place would be. The "front" of the shop seems to just be a window to take orders with the menu around the window. Since this place is literally right below Ohlone, I think it will be a hit once schools re-open (once it's safe) and students descend from the school to take break and go home. Food / Drinks: 3 snacks as of now (Popcorn Chicken, Shrimp Katsu, and Croquette) and a multitude of drinks to choose from including fresh milk drinks, milk tea drinks, and fruit tea drinks. I think it's an easy recommendation for me as there's probably something for everyone. I got the Red Bean Uji Matcha Latte and the Grapefruit Guava this time around and it was really good. 50% sugar and 50% ice seems to be the "sweet" spot for me. I'll definitely be back to try out more of the menu as it's so close.

I started seeing reviews for this spot and seeing a "Hot Trending" ads on Yelp for a new boba shop nearby and of course, if you know me, I have to try it! In short, I cannot believe this spot is here because I'm a new fan. L O C A T I O N Located in a small plaza right across from Ohlone College. They have a small parking lot in the back and located in an alleyway. If you're walking on Mission, there's a stairwell that goes down into this plaza and they're located basically at the end of the stairs. M E N U It's small but hits all your top drinks for most boba spots (Milks, Milk teas, fruit teas, some snacks, etc). I do like that their house black and jasmine green tea already have boba included in the price and drink which is mind blowing considering most places would charge an additional $0.50 on top of the price that they have listed. The verdict? I had the jasmine green milk tea and then a house black milk tea another week and both were pretty much perfection. The boba was cooked well with a nice chew. The jasmine green tea was not oversteeped unlike many other places. I feel like they actually steep it fresh when you order. I had 0 ice and 0% sweetness and it was perfection. I didn't need to add more ice or adjust the sugar when I got home. S E R V I C E The service was relatively good. There's one person behind the counter who makes the drinks too. Easy enough when ordering and paying. O V E R A L L This is definitely now our new fav spot in our neighborhood. I'm still exploring the rest of the menu but for the baseline boba drinks, they've hit all the high marks for me. Please go and support these folks as we need this place to stay open during and after COVID!

    Umi Tea in Fremont (8/18)

Umi Tea is located in the Mission San Jose area of Fremont. I first noticed this place when I was frequenting a business next door (EE Home Cooking). It was coming soon, so I made a mental note. A few weeks later, I was going to the restaurant next door when I noticed that Umi Tea had opened. So I had to try it out. The menu is prominently displayed, and you place your order at the window. This place shares a space with Shumi Ramen. The staff member who took my order was pleasant and accommodating as I ordered a Grapefruit Guava Fruit Tea. While waiting, I asked said staff member when they first opened, and l learned it was Wednesday (9/2). My drink was soon ready. It was refreshing and tasty -- there were Grapefruit bits included. I will definitely make a return trip to sample more of their menu which includes snacks.

I thought Umi was decent milk tea in the area. I think they took over an old ramen shop here. The menu is not very large - they only have a few drinks ok their menu but I like that they have snacks! I got a regular milk tea and it was not bad. Next time I want to try their chicken! The service is a little bit on the slow side.

Drove by last week before the opened up and finally got the chance to try this place out. It's located right in front of EE Restaurant and Ohlone College. I'm pretty sure once Ohlone allows in person classes to resume, this place will be a hit. I ordered the Mango Lime Tea with Lychee Jelly and it was okay. I liked it, but it didn't blow me away. I think I'll need to try a few more drinks to make up my mind. Customer service is very new, but VERY sweet. I'll be looking forward to try the popcorn chicken and croquettes for my next visit, since I only got a drink this time around. Excited to try the other options!

The service here was really good and the staff were very polite and kind. The store has a nice calming atmosphere and is kept very clean. I got the chicken curry which had a pretty good serving size. There were also a good variety of drinks. I got the Vietnamese latte which had the perfect amount of sweetness.

Neighborhood boba shop that I think popped up because of covid- It's a small takeout window connected to the ramen place. I've gotten multiple things off the menu before, almost all great. Drinks lean towards the less sweet side (other than the brown sugar milk drink). Note there's no seating, so not a place to hang. Also, they offer stamp cards!

Poor timing my part. Wanted to run home with boba at 3:46PM, they reopen at 4:00

I'll be honest, I didn't want to like this place because they charge extra for dairy alternatives.... $0.50 extra for soy or oat milk. Especially when current data is showing that nearly HALF of Americans consume plant-based milk now. I'll continue to say this - plant based milk does not actually cost more than dairy milk so I don't see why places charge extra. Much like coffee places let customers choose between full fat, non fat and 2% milk, this is just another kind of milk. There should not be an additional charge. Especially when more than half the human population is lactose intolerant to some degree... ANYWAY..... I wanted to highlight that Umi Tea uses Uji Matcha, which immediately caught my eye. I'm a sucker for good match and Uji brand is reliably delicious so I decided I needed to stop by Umi Tea at some point. I was vulnerable/craving boba mid-run on my way home as I saw Umi Tea in the distance. I dreaded the prospect of 1. taking forever to walk 1.2 mi home with boba in hand or 2. making my run a bit more inconvenient by carefully running home with boba in hand and not being able to drink it until I got home. Thankfully they were on break for another 15 minutes so I almost turned around to run home until the owner popped the window open to invite me over. (Fiiiine! I'll order boba!!) **review actually starts here... lol** I ordered the Red Bean Uji Matcha (Soy Milk + $0.50) Latte with Matcha boba. I let the owner know I would be literally running home with this beverage in hand and asked if he would be able to add a layer of plastic wrap underneath the cap to keep the drink from spilling. He packaged up my drink with care and was 100% confident in his work. (see photo) Judging by how carefully he packaged my drink, I was feeling pretty good about how the drink would have been made too. I wasn't asked about sweetness level so I worried the drink would be too sweet when I got home but actually everything was PERFECT. (okay, maybe a tiny bit more matcha powder would have been nice but this was great as is too!) There was just the right amount of every ingredient in the drink and I didn't spill a single drop running with this all the way home. For context, I was running about a 8 min/mile pace all the way home. It wasn't blazing fast but I wasn't walking either. Thanks to the careful packaging, my delicious drink was preserved the entire way. I'm glad he didn't noticeably judge me for wanting to run with a boba home, not that I would really care, but it was nice that he was supportive and enthusiastic. I may make this an "aid station" going forward. Thanks Umi Tea!

Roasted Brown Sugar Latte ($6) - 50% sugar to my liking

Don't let this gem roll pass you as it tugs on the lower eye level of the street! The Classic Ramen was a must-have!!! Well, I guess any dish that have Char Siu (pork) or just add that from their Ramen Extra Menu!! I am not kidding about the thickness, tenderness, taste and that thin layer of pork skin was just perfect to my liking! Popcorn chicken with hot sauce on the side was good and was plenty for me to snack on later! :) Roasted Brown Sugar Latte (with 50% sugar) was refreshing! Sugar level was right but I could try 30% next time. Parking lot was available behind the building. Take Out orders only for now.

Cute little kiosk for Umi Tea!

This is the only singular franchise location in the United States (at least as I'm writing this and has been like this for awhile), which is insane to me, considering that it was quite hyped back then and remains a favorite to many. Hopefully one day, they'll be more locations, but it's literally been years. In that case, I'll have visiting SoCal friends with me try. Simple and casual appearance. Love the wood accent on the counters and tables, along with the green walls and descriptions of the tea. There's a bit of it that reminds of what the old XFT location looks like from the RH location, but only just a little bit. You can order ahead for pick up and they're quite efficient. The only times there was even a semblance of a fisted wait, at least when I've gone, was due to orders of like 10-30 drinks for catering or an office boba run. Solid tea that's steeped really well. If you adjust for much lower sugar, you can enjoy the quality much better. I feel like with the influx of the boba wars (at least in SoCal), many of the Taiwanese franchises (Guiji, Chayan, UG, etc.) just don't have enough of a strong flavor to compete with their Chinese competitors, but Brian Black Tea, I think would be a strong contender if they were drafted in the SoCal boba wars. I've enjoyed all of their milk teas, but my favorite has always been the Era Milk Tea with the slight coffee taste to it and the Retro Milk Tea with the subtle roasted flavor and hint of cocoa to it. I usually get 25% sweet and it's perfect. NorCal must when I visit.

The tea flavor was extremely mild and it was a little hard to believe it was a milk tea. The boba was a nice chewy texture and was a little sweet. A large milk tea was $6.75 and after the addition of boba and tax, my total was a little under $8.50 which I found to be expensive for what I received. This shop isn't really suited for my taste.
