First off the place is absolutely beautiful and the staff are lovely people. I ordered a Sapporo and it was a really great draft pour by the waitress. I ordered the Umigawa roll, I almost always order the flagship roll but yellowfin, salmon and habanero seemed like a great combo. I took a bite of the first piece and something was a little off. So in the next piece I tried every ingredient individually and the fish tasted good. I realized that the avocado basically just undercuts the taste of the fish and ruins the texture. I think it would be a really good roll if they just took out the avocado. I also noticed that avocado was in most of the rolls and know for a fact that in Korea and Japan they don't put avocado in their rolls. Overall I had a nice dinner, the crunch of the peppers and fish of the umigawa roll would be so much better without the avocado interfering, it's just completely unnecessary and I think it may be the reason this place has gotten a few bad reviews. read more

We wanted to grab sushi before seeing a movie at the Cinemark and came across UMIGAWA. When we walked in, the ambience was clean and modern. The service was prompt and they checked in on us multiple times throughout our dinner. They have an amazing deal for their Nigiri combo which is $35 for like 10 pieces + California roll + miso soup. The quality of the fish was great and we also ordered the spicy tuna crispy rice which was delicious! We left stuffed and everything had to get a take home box. Total with drinks was about $109, which is pretty good considering how much we ate. Would definitely recommend! read more

We recommend the sushi, but the hot food... not so much. Three of us came for lunch on a Saturday around 11:45A and were the first customers of the day. We were seated on the left side of the restaurant in a booth with a clear view of the sushi bar. While sushi makes up a majority of the menu, they have a pretty large appetizer selection. Additionally, they offer a lunch menu featuring sushi sets, teriyaki, a chirashi bowl and udon. These lunch plates include miso soup and a small salad as long as you're dining in. + SUSHI LUNCH B ($17.50): Five pieces of nigiri (salmon, tuna, yellowtail, shrimp, white fish) came with a standard 8-piece California Roll. The rice and fish ratio on the nigiri was great and there was a nice little hint of wasabi that gave each one some oomph. My favorites were the tuna and the smooth salmon. The California Roll was good and exactly what I expected. Along with the soup and salad, this lunch filled me up. The salad was fresh with crisp spring greens, a couple cucumbers and tomato, but it was overly dressed for my liking. + R1 ROLL ($19): This roll had prawn tempura and cucumber inside, topped with seared salmon and a spicy mayo. For the most part, I enjoyed this since I love seared salmon. I just found the sauce to be overpowering as it completely dominated the flavor. + CRISPY CALAMARI ($15): This was the most disappointing dish. The calamari was not crispy whatsoever and void of flavor. It was rather limp and wasn't even hot by the time it reached our table. Plus, the serving size was extremely small for the price. One person in my group ordered the CHICKEN TERIYAKI ($14.50) which was a thin grilled chicken breast with teriyaki sauce, served with rice. She said the flavor was fine, but the chicken itself was unfortunately on the dry side. Service was friendly and our waiter checked on us a couple times which was appreciated, considering that he was the only server taking care of all the tables. If I come back, it would specifically be for the sushi lunch special, and possibly to give the other rolls a shot, however I probably wouldn't take another chance with the hot food items. read more

I came here on a weekend evening for dinner. The overall experience was alright. All the servers were really nice and friendly, and we were notified that there was a delay in fish coming out, which was alright. I liked the atmosphere of the restaurant, and it was nicely decorated. I ordered the sashimi set and red dragon roll. Most of the sashimi was just alright, and I enjoyed the salmon and tuna the most. The red dragon roll was pretty good in terms of flavor and crunch factor. Located in The Village at Totem Lake and it looked very clean and the aesthetics were in point! We were seated right away and the server was very welcoming. The manager also came out to greet us and thanked us for coming in today as they're quite new still and assured us they always try to get the freshest seafood of the day some straight from Japan. We ordered a board of nigiri which was very fresh and outstanding, although they ran out of Otoro but opted for the Chutoro instead. The ikura nigiri was also very fresh out of the nigiri's but what stood out was the uni hand roll that came out first and we ate that asap. The crispy rice sushi with spicy tuna was nothing to cry home about but it was still fresh. We ordered the last halibut collar but we were so full by the end. Not photos was the black cord kasuzuke which was so tender and seasoned perfectly that we ate it before we could take a photo. My husband and I decided to check this place out for a lunch date and it was pleasant. We came right when they open for lunch and was the only group there. The place is very quiet and peaceful. We got the lunch sushi combo B and the salmon with rice dish. Each entree also came with soup and salad. For the price, the portion is pretty decent. At first I thought it was small, but if you add in the soup and salad, it is more reasonable. Both dishes was definitely high quality The salmon was perfectly season and the skin was crispy. I was surprised at how good the rice was :) There was one server during that time and she was pretty good, check in on us once in a while to see how we were doing. They had some really good rolls! Really recommend their dragon roll. I wouldn't spring for their omakase again. Their specials didn't taste special, and I wouldn't categorize them better than their basic tuna and salmon. I would have rather saved 50% and gone for their lunch specials, and that extra fund for a special roll instead. Our omakase did not come with their cotton candy nigiri, so I'm not sure what I missed out on. A lot of cartridge full fish which I wasn't a fan of. Definitely would have enjoyed my time more if I just ordered salmon/tuna basics. Giving them a solid 4 stars for this. And wouldn't blame it on my wrong menu choice. My friend and I came here with no plans to do so - we were walking around the complex looking for dinner options when we stumbled onto Umigawa. It was impromptu and a great choice. Full disclosure I wasn't initially sure if it was a great choice. Upon entering the hostess regarded us much like I regard an ant on a countertop - a glowering disdain. We obviously caught her at the wrong time because she was glowering angry. She motioned to a table which we interpreted as that's where we ought to sit, but never received verbal acknowledgement. I sat at this little table with the tightest table density I've seen at a sushi restaurant and was not comfortable. Here's the thing though - the feeling didn't last. Our waitress turned out to be the polar opposite of the hostess. She was gregarious, charming, funny, and went above and beyond. At that time they didn't have plum wine on the menu and I made a comment about craving a glass. She noted they had a bottle but it hadn't made it to the menu. She checked with someone to see if she could sell me a glass without me even asking and made it happen. I was so pleased! The nigiri was delicious. I ordered a special that day with a sampling of salmon, hamachi, white fish, and albacore. It was perfect. The presentation was nice, the rice perfect, and the fish buttery fresh. All in all we left much happier than we came in. The seating is still a bit close to what I prefer. Our waitress couldn't turn a circle sliding in between the tables like a card. In the beginning when no one sat next to us no biggie, but by the end of our meal when the other two tables were taken I could clearly hear every word of every conversation. This seems to be a Korean-owned sushi place. The decoration is great. The environment is clean and chic. The price for the other food like Udon is a little pricy. The lunch comes with a miso soup but didn't provide spoon. The salad sauce is too much and tastes too strong. And the Udon's spoon is small and hard to use. Tempura sauce too strong, and Tempura is a little oily. The overall taste is a little salty and strong. The nigiri sushi is in good quality. Stumbled across this spot while walking around the shopping area. Not to busy in the evening. The host was very kind but he was also our server and there was no other servers or staff. We only saw 2 chefs preparing the food. One server for the restaurant and we felt bad because other guests kept coming in and he would stop in the middle of our order to greet the guests. But he was still very friendly about it. The wait was long but our server gave us edamame for free since they seemed understaffed. The other tables were waiting too but no one was unpleasant about waiting for our server. He never took the menus back after we ordered. And the other tables had their menus too but placed them on the seats beside them since he didn't collect them. Our water was never refilled. He came to check on us once, poor guy had to keep running around. Our sushi was pretty good. Only one roll was outstanding. Great location but understaffed. We ordered the Spider roll, rainbow roll, red dragon, caterpillar roll, spicy tuna roll. It was a birthday dinner for us which we mentioned to our server but he was too busy and forgot at the end so we did not order any dessert. Stopped by for lunch on a whim while walking around Totem Lake Village. They had lunch specials for a reasonable price. I love that they use wild salmon for their salmon shioyaki (my kids' favorite). Many lunch items come with side of miso soup and salad. You can tell the quality of fish is very good, and the sushi rice was well cooked and perfectly balanced as well. It was quiet on a weekday afternoon. I felt bad because we had a loud toddler and baby with us, and the ambience is a bit more upscale so we felt self-conscious But we still received kind service, so will definitely be back! read more

Decent food but expensive with small portion sizes. Had a chirashi bowl for lunch, and for $25 I was expecting a lot more quantity and variety. It's almost like they forgot to add 2-3 slices of fish, it didn't even have hamachi or mackerel. Sushi rice underneath was flavored well, but too cold like it had been in the fridge all night. My wife had the sashimi lunch and that was much more generous with the fish slices and variety, and a better value for $19. I would go back to try some of the hot dishes, but from what I'm hearing from other reviews it seems like those portion sizes are less than expected too. read more

The vibe is quite pleasant; very clean lines & simple yielding a subtle ambience. I took a peek at the menu prior just looking for a vegan snack before heading home. The host handing it over and then I went and grabbed a seat on the wall bench table. "Something unique and snacking," I thought. Dengaku tofu and a side of rice. The tofu flavor is new to me thus made me curious (sweet miso?) and the rice is a good backup to pair with anything. It was nice, more so for trying a new-to-me dish that I finished. Umigawa Sushi is a new-ish sushi restaurant within the Village at Totem Lake complex. The interior is clean-lined modern. The service is cordial and helpful. I think I stunned our server with how much food we ordered. Why not? Variety is fun. For our first-time visit, we were a little too brave ordering several high-cost food items and paid well over $200 for our food without buying any drinks. Lol. Luckily, most items panned out well. The word "sushi" is built into the name of their business, so I trusted them to deliver. Overall, their fish varieties are very good, ditto with the quality. The overall experience doesn't reach the highest end sushi places, but good enough. Prices are a wee-high, but I try not to think about it too much. The toro x2, uni, and miso black cod are the standouts amongst our choices. The restaurant has a very high ceiling, so the speaking noise bounces back and can be quite loud sometimes. Ask for a corner table if you can. Free parking is plentiful via private lots on the complex. The Food: Seafood is subject to availability. Prices vary, too. Chutoro Zuke, Seared Aburi Toro, Uni, Hotaru Ika - 4.5 Stars English names: Marinated M fatty tuna, seared tuna belly, sea urchin, fire fly squid. These sushi nigiri were amazing, well stuffed (uni), and spendy (oops), except the fire fly squid (not as good and cheaper). I did give them feedback that other places serve fire fly squid with a heavier sauce, too fishy otherwise. Miso Black Cod - 4.5 Stars We upsized this to dinner size, which is also served with salad, miso soup, rice. The black cod itself is also amazing - perfectly cooked, flaky, well-seasoned. Met all expectations and of course, spendy. Wild Grilled Salmon (Shioyaki), appetizer size, $16 - 4.5 Stars This salmon was also well seasoned with just salt and pepper, enough to bring out the natural flavor. It was cooked just right. Rainbow roll $18, salmon handroll $6, salmon belly - 3.5 Stars Their "normal" items are visually normal and tasted normal as well. Not too exciting, but not bad either. Associated Tempura, $15 - 2.5 Stars 3 prawns & 4 veggies. This dish was sub-par. Tasted queasier. The shrimps are smaller than most. The veggies are smaller, except the piece of onion. An unexpected gem! I had been wanting to try Umigawa since walking by one day, and I am glad we did. We started with the shishito peppers which had a higher than average rate of spicy ones (my favorite!). The miso soup was perfect to warm us up on a cold day. The spicy tuna with crispy rice is not to be missed -- crispy, gooey, spicy. We went for the omakase and found it to exceed our expectations. The fish was high quality and delicious, and each piece was thoughtfully created. For the price and quality, I think their omakase is a great deal. It was fun to see all the pieces lined up and go through them one by one together. For dessert, they gave us uni from Hokkaido and it was great of course. The agedashi tofu was great! One of the best I've had flavor and texture-wise. Unfortunately I can't say the same for the salmon hand roll. The salmon was cut long-ways along the grain instead of against.. so the fish felt very chewy to the point that it was not enjoyable. The fish seemed relatively fresh but not the best. My husband enjoyed the aji but the baby snapper was strange. It was cooked and marinated but the taste didn't sit well with him. We stepped in for a small snack but wasn't all that impressed. Quiet spot at the end of the restaurant row at Village in Totem Lake. No problem getting a table for 3 on a Friday night and great service throughout. We had the sashami combo which came in a sort of basket with ice to keep the sashimi cold. Nice variety of fish, and the fish quality was quite good for the price and quantity. We also had the mackeral (very good) and otoro (better than most other east side sushi places--wow!). Their catepillar roll was also quite good. I think it was truly worth it. We also ordered the R1 Roll to have some variety. Definitely recommend it. The 4 stars is because we ordered the calamari and it was very very bland. Not worth $15. It was just meh and we would definitely skip it next time. Plenty of parking is available around the area, the inside of the restaurant is very modern and classy. This was soft opening. They don't have a lot in trhe menu because the chef for their hot food was not in. So their appetizers were only the salmon and miso. We ordered dragon roll, sushi combo and tempura roll. The service was so slow. That our miso soup didn't even come out after 30-35 mins and then our rolls were all sent to us one by one so the gap between every sushi was quite a wait. It's possible they didn't have extra waitstaff too. The food though we liked the sushi combo, and dragon roll. But the miso was very undiluted so very salty, also their soy sauce is also not the less sodium one too so also gets salty if the sushi dipped too long(but that's also fine since it is just soysauce). Overall experience though is good i mean my only complaint really is the time of waiting for the food. read more

Stopped by during lunch hour on a weekend. It was around noon and despite it being a nice day, it was not busy. I think it's due to the location of the restaurant but otherwise, decor is nice. It was very quiet so if you're looking for somewhere hip and thriving, then the other end of the complex might be better. The food itself was very standard. My husband and I both order bento boxes (with different sets of fish and rolls). They have lunch combos which were a good price point (came with soup and salad) and the rolls weren't massive or too small either. The fish were good and fresh. My husband devoured his meal and was just content. Overall we spent quite a bit for a lunch - about $25 pp before tax and tip which I think is more on the expensive side for standard sushi and rolls. I probably wouldn't come back for that price range, and especially given the other options in the complex. However, it's not because the food or service were bad. read more

I really wanted to love this place as a passionate sushi lover, but it was as mediocre as most of the sushi restaurants here. I was planning to do omakase at a bar for a fabulous lunch, but I stopped myself as soon as I saw the selections and the quality of fish at the bar. It was definitely not worth spending money on the sushi you can get everywhere else. I'm not saying it tastes bad though. If you are a sushi omakase snob like me or love the authentic omakase, go eat at the bar at Kashiba or Taneda in Seattle. If you are looking for just ok sushi, this is a good place for you! Food - 3/5. The level of sushi is similar to Big fish or Oto sushi. I'm a fan of Big fish because everything I tasted so far tastes good and the portion is generous for the price you pay. On the other hand, I don't care for Oto sushi because it's trying to be authentic , but it's not. I was hugely disappointed once I did omakase and that was the last time I decided to do omakase there. But hey, all those places have good rolls! So just stick to that or regular sushi (not omakase). Anyway, going back to this place.... Their salad dressing was good, but Miso soup was not as good as other sushi restaurants. I would not order it unless it comes with it or they do a better job. Overall I'd choose Big Fish over this place since they have similar level of sashimi, but the price us better! We ordered sushi lunch and sashimi lunch and left hungry. My boyfriend was ready to eat a big burrito immediately after this lunch. Ambiance - 5/5. Great for a date or a large party, still cozy enough to bring kids! Service - 4/5. Everyone was attentive. Recently had my second visit to Umigawa and the quality and flavor has been amazing! I highly recommend the Black Cod, it's flavorful and almost melts when it hits your tongue. Also the sushi is super fresh and i always order Uni when you see it on the menu imported from Japan. Buttery and delicious. We went at dinner time during the week and there was only one other table when we were there. For only two tables, i'd say the service was lacking. I'll definitely be back and hopefully my next visit i can change my 4 star review to 5! read more
