Recently had my second visit to Umigawa and the quality and flavor has been amazing! I highly recommend the Black Cod, it's flavorful and almost melts when it hits your tongue. Also the sushi is super fresh and i always order Uni when you see it on the menu imported from Japan. Buttery and delicious. We went at dinner time during the week and there was only one other table when we were there. For only two tables, i'd say the service was lacking. I'll definitely be back and hopefully my next visit i can change my 4 star review to 5! read more

Dropped by on a Monday afternoon. The interior is really nice and there's a really nice, intimate ambiance. I love the simple yet classy aesthetic from the decor to the plates. I'm not sure why some reviewers are complaining about quality and bathroom trouble lol. Our fish was good quality and it's unbelievable that a restaurant like this would serve bad fish. The food was mostly good - we enjoyed the agedashi tofu, which was lightly crispy on the outside, and the chirashi bowl that had a good mix of fish. The nabeyaki udon was a little underwhelming with toppings (one tempura, a couple of fish cakes, two clams, and some very dry and over cooked chicken breast) and the noodles were overcooked, but the broth was hearty without being too heavy - lots of flavor there that almost made up for the toppings being kind of mid. Hand rolls were great and I wish we had been hungrier to try more of the sushi. My biggest complaint is the server, who came over and was talking to our table of two while I was clearly on the phone - super unprofessional. Our first time at Umigawa Sushi. It was quite inviting as soon as we walked in. We were treated very respectfully and seated quickly. The sushi was excellent and we really enjoyed the Lollipop roll. More like 3.5 (4 for me, 3 for my partner so it avg to 3.5). Totem lake mall area new restaurants are nice including this one. Ambience is nice and service was attentive. I wanted the oyster app but it was out. We ended up getting the spicy hamachi (?) and the waygu beef on hot stone. I enjoyed both. Sushi was good because I asked for less rice and they basically make it a lot less so that was very nice of them. The price wasn't cheap though so I guess one may expect more? Nothing that was outstanding but still fresh fish and good service. When we looked at the bill too long they even though there was a problem and came ask us. I think that's very observant of them. Totem Lake needed a good sushi place, and Umigawa delivers. The decor is clean and modern, and the food is just the same. We walked in on a Thursday night and found out they were still in the soft opening stage. For the two of us, we ordered a few appetizers, some nigiri, and a roll. The salmon crab was refreshing, and while I agree with another reviewer that the truffle wasn't very pronounced, the fish was fresh and the sauce left in the dish was delicious. The garlic butter edamame were nicely sautéed and super buttery, and the spicy tuna crispy rice was tasty with a nice amount of heat coming from the pickled fresh wasabi. The nigiri was fresh and delicious, and the dragon roll had the crispiest tempura shrimp I've ever had wrapped up in a sushi roll (or not in one, for that matter). Overall, a great meal and can't wait for them to fully open! We will be back many times. read more

Stepping into the intimate establishment situated in the hopping Village at Totem Lake, you're welcomed by an open-concept space adorned with modern finishes and contemporary lighting that sets a perfect ambience for a casual meal or a dinner date. Last night, my husband and I sat at the bar, and Chef Kyu took our taste buds on a ride with his thoughtful and creative Omakase. We began our course with blistered and perfectly seasoned shishito peppers and moved onto a series of mild and light fish and then on to the richer and fattier offerings. Each and every piece was super fresh and meticulously paired with the right flavors. Chef Kyu was attentive as he explained each presentation while also measuring our reaction before offering his next dish. We finished the evening feeling very satisfied with the unique Omakase experience. Umigawa is hands down the best Japanese restaurant in the greater Seattle area. Stopped by for lunch and a catch-up with a friend recently, and was not disappointed. This was my first time at Umigawa, and overall, this was a pleasant experience. I was not too hungry, but all the items on the menu that I tried were pretty good: snapper, egg omelet, and eel, although mackerel roll with sesame seeds was by far my favorite. The service was attentive, maybe too attentive at times. You could see that they are still working out the details, e.g. we were caught with a question while mid-bite/still chewing a few times. But hopefully, these small things will be ironed out as they get a bit more experience. The interior is calm and minimalistic, and the place is super clean. Great new sushi place in Totem Lake, with chef's hired away from Sushi Kashiba (the place with great food and chefs but horrible and dishonest service/management) and Shiro's Sushi in Seattle. In soft opening right now, but looks very promising. Great sushi. Great service. Creamy dreamy uni, for example, is always a good sign of a great place. My only concern is the seating area is relatively small, especially in such a big space. So, easy to get into right now, but I bet that won't last once they have their grand opening at the end of August 2022. Can't wait to go back and try the full menu. read more

Came during soft opening by accident, and what a happy accident it was! The nigiri is a showstopper and a must get. We had the sushi combo, and while that was very good, the nigiri that we ordered a la carte was far better. Lucky for us that the head chef was the creator for us! Katsuo (bonito) and Aji (Spanish mackerel) were superbly executed with great attention to detail. Freshness was totally there too. The Madai (red snapper) and Kampachi (amberjack) were delicious as well. The prices were VERY reasonable for the quality. Each order comes with 2 pieces, and 3 if you go with sashimi. The ambience was relaxing and quiet, even with multiple groups of guests enjoying themselves. They'll be having their grand opening in a couple weeks, which will include an omakase. The decor and place is awesome. Clean modern Japanese. The two stars are for: -rice that had too much vinegar and was over cooked. A mushy rice ball. -the fish was ok, not the best quality. It seemed like they wanted to try to be something more than they are capable of. -service was just ok, after they dropped off our food... no one ever came back to check on us.. and we never received our miso soup, which was part of our the sushi combo. I was really excited to try this place out... prime location and the look and aesthetic gave me high hopes. Bummed the food just didn't hit the mark. Shocked to learn that the chef was from shiros/ kashiba. Hopefully they make some quick changes... otherwise there are plenty of other choices at totem lake. read more

Walked in during the soft opening around 6 PM. We got a quick seat at the bar and we're able to watch the chef make different things for the couple next to us that did the omakase. Staff is super nice and attentive, fish is high quality, and it's not too loud (yet anyway). It is expensive compared to other sushi restaurants the eastside, but defintely best so far! Things that I hope get better with time: more even cuts on rolls and more flavor in most things like in the rice and the eel sauce in the caterpillar roll. read more

2 stars vs 1 or zero is because food is not terrible! Service is bad. Restaurant is not managed well. Not enough sitting and hosts are not trained well. If they don't improve customer service and management they might end up closing the location. I live walking to the restaurant and tried going there on a weekend number of times and 3 out of 4 times I walked in and answer was there is 30 min wait , this is because there are not enough tables in that space and design is terrible. By the way if you order sushi rolls you will only get 5 pieces! read more

I am so grateful Umigawa is in Kirkland and they are open on Monday. As, I always crave for Japanese food on Monday and most of them are close to restore. This restaurant is so new, spacious and nice overall. The staff are friendly and efficient. I love to have lunch here. It's a classy place for a lovely meal. Dinner is also wonderful. Umigawa's offering is on point with their pricing. To me, it is fair pricing with quality in Seattle/Eastside standard. Parking is easy as there are street parking and garage parking is just across from the restaurant. The sushi is fresh and quality is in mind and stomach. I really recommend the two appetizers we got: Tuna crispy rice: the tuna was flavorful and had a nice kick. Went great with the crispy rice Hamachi with Thai chili sauce: so so refreshing! We were looking for a sushi restaurant to go to, and randomly stumbled upon this restaurant. The sashimi here is very fresh! It was very tasteful! We ordered the combo for $45! I think it was truly worth it. We also ordered the R1 Roll to have some variety. Definitely recommend it. The 4 stars is because we ordered the calamari and it was very very bland. Not worth $15. It was just meh and we would definitely skip it next time. Plenty of parking is available around the area, the inside of the restaurant is very modern and classy. Walked by and thought we'd give it a try! It's currently at "soft opening" so things may change. Ordered nabeyaki udon, sushi combo lunch, Hamachi appetizer, shishito peppers, and some ikura sushi. The udon is really good in my opinion. Soup base had some bonito flakes in it as garnish. The tempuras came out separately with a nice dipping bowl! Only comment would be if they added a couple clams and imitation crab stick! And also peppers flake on the side. Hamachi appetizer is also fairly unique. It's yellowtail sashimi with tobiko in ponzu sauce. Good combo! Shishito peppers were the best we had for a while. Huge portion for the price and cooked very well. My wife is a big fan of it. Sushi is cut really well and well sized. The rice is flavored well and really good... though i think the rice at Izumi is still a bit better. Lastly my wife wants to add that restroom could use some hooks or shelf to hold purse/jacket. The price is fair for the location and portion. I would recommend! read more

The hospitality is impeccable every time we go into this place! Kevin goes out of his way to make sure you have as perfect an experience as you can while he serves you, along with all the other super friendly servers. They were behind on our food (once) and he gave us so many free things just to make sure we were taken care of while waiting! They truly all go out of their way to make everyone feel welcome. Oh and the food is truly spectacular! Everything we've tried has been fresh and well flavored. Favorite rolls are Red Dragon and Caterpillar! Have been here twice in a week because, WOW! I found my favorite new sushi spot! Quality is top notch, and service is quick and friendly. They are only operating with a small selection of beer and sake at the moment, but the sushi makes up for it no doubt. Love their large options for fresh sushi including multiple varieties of salmon and tuna. Tonight I had a more extensive selection than I usually try, knowing I could trust all of the quality and taste when it comes to expanding from my normal sushi order. One of the best sushi places on the eastside. Good location at Totem Lake mall. We ordered omakase, which I think is a must-try for people who love sushi. The fish is fresh and of high quality. The rice is well prepared, and for me it is also the right size. The placement is beautiful and eye-pleasing. I briefly mentioned that I loved seared sushi, and I believe that the chef definitely took that into consideration and the seared ones tasted fabulous. The final course was foie gras with marshmallows, and that was mindblowing. We also ordered black cod and tuna with crispy rice. Both are very tasty. Totem lake is really upping their game for delicious restaurant options over at the Village. Umigawa has a modern aesthetic with high open air ceilings, open concept kitchen, counter seats and ample tables for a little more privacy and larger groups. They have a generous menu, the sushi is well balanced with rice/veggie/protein proportions and in my opinion, have similar prices as other competitors. At 6:00 on a Friday, we were seated right away, service staff were attentive, and the food was tasty. We ordered 3 items on the menu: the combo for $30 which came with a miso soup, calamari - delicate and very lightly breaded, and the R1 roll which was gently seared and sized perfectly (half-dollar size) for that single bite. read more

I would give 0 stars if possible. The service is fine. The deco is also good. The reason I give 0 stars is the food quality. I feel extremely uncomfortable after dining here. I ordered a sushi combo. In the end, I only finished 10 nigiri. Now 5 hours after the meal, my stomach feels sour with a bit of soreness. The hiccup comes with a fishy and unpleasant smell. I am not sure if I will have diarrhea or not. But I won't be surprised if at midnight I have to wake up and go to the restroom. There was a review have concerns about food quality and I didn't pay attention. Now I realize that could be a lifesaver review which I didn't pay attention to. Service- really friendly and super nice but never had I ever had the waiter tell me "I'm so sorry and I felt bad for the long wait and wanted to give you guys a discount but the owner said no." So now I know that the owner is stingy and don't really care for customer service or owning up to fault. Background to this is we ordered a sashimi combo that got lost in translation somewhere and tables that came in after us were all getting their food. We were super patient and actually didn't even complain but to be told that, it just really didn't sit right. Appetizer - ordered the salmon crab, great description on the menu. Presentation great. Taste was okay. Salmon was fresh. Didn't really taste the truffle though. Overall, probably would not order again. Sushi - we ordered a california roll, had way too much rice vinegar that it over powered the roll. Rice was too mushy and sticky yet still able to fall apart so easily. Cucumber in the roll had the peel on but the quality of the cucumber wasn't good enough to do that because the peel was bitter and felt a bit waxy still. Stingy on the avocado. Literally thought what can go wrong with a cali roll?? Sashimi combo - quality of fish was okay, nothing amazing; although one of the fish temp was a little iffy. I was actually super excited about this one because I saw other people order it and the presentation was supposed to be in this super cute wooden bowl. So imagine my disappointment when we waited over an hour for it only for it to come out on a normal plate. I was pleasantly surprised by how good this place is. We went on a Tuesday for dinner and there was plenty of seating. The restaurant is very clean and aesthetic with tall ceilings. We ordered the sashimi combo, the toro hand roll, and two sushi rolls - the spider roll and the red dragon roll. The sashimi combo was pretty good and reasonably priced for the quality of fish that you're getting. Although the salmon came out a bit frozen, the tuna and yellow tail were very good quality. The yellow tail melted on my tongue and was probably the best yellow tail that I've ever had actually. My boyfriend liked it so much that he ordered an extra yellow tail hand roll. The toro hand roll was also very good and was probably my favorite thing that I ordered. Even though it might seem pricey, it was good quality toro and they do give a lot of fish. For the sushi rolls, I really enjoyed the red dragon roll - super flavorful and had a lot of fish, but the spider roll was pretty average and was not that impressive. Came in here on a Friday around 12:30pm for lunch. Got the sushi lunch promo and it came with miso soup and salad before. Fish was amazing and the rice was perfect sushi rice consistency. Also tried their mackerel which was great. We sat at the sushi bar so able to order right there and everything came out in great timing. I'm just now getting around to writing a review from my visit during soft opening. The restaurant is nice and has a cool open kitchen concept. The location is convenient in the shopping center. The food was pretty average and I felt like the prices were high for what you get. Everything was good, but nothing really stood out in particular. The presentation was lovely though! The service was good and we were seated right away at our reservation time. At the time, they did seem a little short staffed, but obviously I can't speak to that currently. I think there's better sushi on the Eastside, so Umigawa probably won't make it into my regular rotation. read more

Nice atmosphere but pretty steep prices. I chose the sushi combo which included all the usual suspects (salmon, tuna, shrimp, California Roll) but also came with a few "chef's choices" which were a delightful surprise--sea bass and octopus. Fish was good, tasted fresh. We also had the tempura vegetables and shrimp and although the batter was excessive on a few of the pieces, it was crisp and tasty. Overall, the food was good, although not spectacular. Service was attentive without being intrusive. However, having so many other sushi choices in the area with markedly better prices, Umigawa likely will not be my first choice the next time I get a sushi craving. read more

Our meal at Umigawa felt uneven. First Impressions: The decor was minimalist and inviting: tidy with clean lines and pleasant materials. We were seated promptly. Our server was friendly, though on this Wednesday, I think they were the only server working. Most of our food was brought out by other kitchen staff. Oddly, the menus were just B&W photocopied sheets of paper. Maybe they were ordering new ones. The Meal: The tea was agreeable, but the drinking water tasted stale; my partner noted the water carafe was pre-filled + plastic wrapped and then uncovered for service. It tasted like it. The rest of the food was ... fine. I enjoyed the shishito peppers more than my partner. They brought my entree out at least 5 minutes before my hers. The nigiri and sashimi were really inconsistent. Some pieces like the fatty tuna were excellent while others tasted off. Partly, this was due to the (banana?) leaf and lemon wedge used to present the sashimi; the fish really took on those flavors. Some fish was cut too thick and the texture wasn't as delicate as it should be. They forgot my Miso soup entirely, but we asked for it and it was actually quite nice. The ginger tasted old. The Takeaway: The place looks cute and that was enough to get us in the door, but there are too many other superior sushi options on the East side for us to return. read more
