I feel bad but the sushi here was at best mediocre to bad. Tried it last night based on all the great reviews, but having some decent amount of experience with sushi in large cities and it being my favorite food i know a bit about how sushi should taste. We first ordered a special .. king crab roll. it was good, but the rice was not great. not enough vinegar and not sticky enough, it fell apart the second you put it in any shoyu. i ordered the sushi/sashimi deluxe and as we were the first ones in the restaurant for the evening it arrived with all speed with a lovely presentation on a grey square slate with a fake orchid. it looked really nice. i prefer small bites and this is more of a stylistic thing but the nigiri and sashimi portions are HUGE. you are supposed to fit that entire thing in your mouth all at once and this was genuinely not possible given the site of the pieces put on my platter. The miso was OK. The fish was completely tasteless. As i said above the rice suffered from texture and taste quality. The fish texture was OK but not great. I left all of the sashimi on my plate. People, this is not good quality fish, i'm sorry to say. I took all of the sashimi home disappointed. This AM i have been on the toilet all morning. The rest is going in the garbage. Moral: if you want actual authentic and fresh sushi in this area, Yoshi is seriously the only game in town. The rolls here might be OK, as well as the other cooked food (i didn't try any yet).. but i cannot recommend for sushi. read more

Unagi is the BEST Sushi place in the area! During the Coronavirus Pandemic, they were closed for a few months and my partner and I were forced to eat from other Sushi places and ugh. None of the other sushi places on the East side of the River are as friendly, fresh, or as customer-minded as these guys. We went to other other places where the portions were skimpy, food wasn't fresh, they forgot our chopsticks, soy sauce was expired, poor customer service, etc. We've NEVER had any issue with Unagi. Every time we order out or dine in the experience is a 10/10. My partner and I used to live 10 mins away from Unagi and we would get it about once a week. Now that we live closer to 30 mins away, while we may not get it once a week, we will definitely make the drive for Unagi. Nothing else compares. My favorite is the 50 & 50 Roll :) read more

Decent Japanese restaurant giving the location of capitol area of New York (no offense, there are very few good restaurants here). My wife and I went on a Wednesday night. The atmosphere is good, everything looks new in the place. We ordered Gyoza, Shrimp Tempura, Chirashi dinner, and a few pieces of sushi and salmon rolls. The fish is fresh in both Chirash and sushi. I liked their salmon very much. Unlike other places around this area, they actually serve sushi grade fish for customers. It would be perfect if the Chirashi dinner could be served in a bowl instead of on a plate. It looks good but doesn't make my eating experience easier. Although a bit pricey, it seems like the restaurant is holding their ground to not serve the unfresh fishes. Don't feel disappointed if they tell you they don't have certain kinds of fish sometime. As I talked to the chef, they threw out the unfresh fishes instead of serving to the customers (you would be surprised how many restaurants in the capital area serve you the disgusting unfresh stuff). Finally, I do hope they can serve more variety of fishes. Maybe next time I will try the omakase:) read more

I have been to this restaurant four times in the past two months! While the sushi is amazing, the Thai bubble tea is truly delicious. My favorite rolls are Crazy Tuna and Ikura rolls. I also love the fried rice which they make fresh for each order. The fish is always fresh and the service is always friendly! read more

Maybe its because I ordered takeout. The Chirashi ordered was unfortunately disappointing. Of my chef's choice of 18 pieces of assorted sashimi over rice, I got 2 tamago pieces and 2 imitation crab pieces, neither of which are meet Unagi's description (and your Japanese definition) of Chirashi. The rest of the sashimi was okay. Nothing special on your Sake, Magoro, or Hamachi - very average cuts. The Hotate Gai was definitely a pleasant surprise to find and it was super fresh. The rice, the most important part of any Chirashi dish, was too starchy. I'm assuming I ordered on a busy day and they didn't have the time to do a proper rinse as I've never has this issue before. read more

When Unagi first opened it quickly became one of my fave spots. Up until they opened, there was no place to go for quality sushi in Troy. (Quality sushi: sushi should always have flavor--the fishes should smell and taste like the fish they are, be the proper firmness per the type of fish they are at room temperature.) Then Unagi closed and I was sad. Then they reopened under new ownership and with new staff. I was skeptical of whether or not they would provide the same quality as the previous chef/staff. I am thrilled that they are of excellent quality and service. I've had a lot of Unagi sushi since PAUSE in NY. And, I'm going to have some for lunch with the best bubble tea! Yum! __ I will say that their prices are higher than other good sushi places, but I pay for the convenience. Also, it would be great to have a green salad as a maki lunch side option. read more

We found Unagi Sushi after searching yelp for a place to sushi on our way home from Vermont. The restaurant is great and we eat sushi multiple times a week. It's about 75 minutes away from Stratton Mountain and on the way home from New Jersey. We had the seafood ramen, pink lady roll, the garden salad, and the kids had salmon avocado and cream cheese rolls. The chef was so nice and gave us a sample tasting of the toro, which my wife happened to be taking about wanting. We really enjoyed our meal and will definitely be back on our next Vermont ski trip. read more

After hearing amazing reviews of this place, I maybe had unrealistically high expectations. Granted, it is one of the best sushi places in upstate New York...if not the best I've been to. Came here with a coworker, we both ordered the omakase. The staff are Chinese, but that's typical of many Japanese restaurants. The wasabi tastes fresh but is from a bag - they still get credit for not serving fake wasabi that is heavy in food coloring. Omakase was not worth the price and the dishes were beautiful but lacked variety - they seemed to be topped with the same garnish...none of the garnish adding to the flavor. I'll have to come back and try the sushi. A couple next to me ordered a mixed sashimi plate that was gorgeous! read more

It doesn't get much better than this for upscale sushi in the Capital District. Omakase was very creative and delicious, and made by chef/owner personally. Toro was top grade. Very surprised and happy they served Hana Awaka (sparkling sake) which is my personal favorite. Great ambiance and a welcome addition to 4th St. in Downtown Troy. Hope it's a trend. I want to start out by saying that I am a bit of a sushi snob. My favorite sushi restaurant is actually down in Charleston South Carolina and it is very hard to top. Unagi is now going to be tied for my favorite sushi restaurant in the entire country. I repeat in the entire country. I think the best way to describe what separates them besides the freshest fish is there plating, their service and hospitality, and their new world innovative take on traditional Japanese sushi. I strongly recommend getting the specialty rolls, my date and I tried three of them during our recent visit with the tuna tartare appetizer, and we were more than impressed! The tuna tartare is one of the best I have ever had, and I truly am a sucker for it. What a gym, and an added weapon to the arsenal that is Troy New York culinary. Wanted to eat here for months (would have sashimi every day if I could), but the previous owners were only open after lunch & it was mucho expensive. The new owners expanded their hours & added a cheaper lunch menu...My folks took me here for my Bday in Nov. It was after 6pm, but we still had an amazingly affordable & delicious dinner. I had sashimi, my folks teriyaki & tempura. My mom said it was the best tempura she'd ever had. They both had a beer & I had sake. We all got two meals out of our servings, all for under $100. I'm docking them one "star" however, cuz when I went back with a GF- it would've been equally easy on our wallets, but the sushi chef recommended a "fresh" fatty tuna sashimi... so we added it on. It turned out to be CRAZY expensive. Stick to what you order & you should be fine. I will be back, but won't be taking any "suggestions". read more

No exaggeration, the best sushi we have ever had. Wife and I love Japanese/sushi and decided to stop by Unagi the day after Christmas since they were open for their soft opening. We started with Miso soup. Simple, small and cheap. Incredibly tasty and hearty. Warmed us up nicely. Next was pepper tuna. Incredibly fresh tasting tuna crusted with coarse pepper flakes, topped with mango (and if my memory serves me, diced onions) and on top of a light sauce. Amazing appetizer. Then we split a diablo roll. It was literally the best sushi roll I have ever had. Delicious basil oil really made it pop with a freshness and depth of flavor I've never experienced from sushi. Usually I love soy sauce and wasabi all over my sushi but this needed nothing but what the chef put into/on the roll. Finally we got crab salad. Nice and crisp, yet satisfying. A great finale. The staff was warm and friendly. Server seemed a little nervous but she was super friendly and attentive. The sushi chef (maybe the owner too) was an awesome guy. Very kind and grateful and personable. He told us to come back and try sitting at the sushi bar for a different experience. 10/10, can't wait to go back. read more

I ordered the Congress Roll and the Dynamite Roll which have individual ingredients I normally dont eat (ie cream cheese and jalapeño peppers) but the way the flavors meshed with the other ingredients in their unique roll were yummmmmy. The only reason I gave this four stars is because it is a bit pricy ($18 bucks per roll) and the portion sizes were a bit small. The sushi at unagi sushi was amazing. Truly second to none in the capital region. It was obvious that they have gone to great trouble to not only get the highest quality fish available, but the pickled ginger and wasabi were also clearly better than what I'd normally found in a sushi restaurant. The food was stellar. The prices definitely reflect this effort to serve the best quality ingredients. Food is noticeably more expensive than other area top notch sushi restaurants such as sushi tei or tomo sushi. On top of this, the food also does not come with a soup or salad which is typical of other area restaurants. While that's certainly not a big deal, it helps emphasize the price difference even further. Despite the obviously high quality ingredients, this is not my new favorite for sushi in the area. The decor of the restaurant feels sparse and cheap, which detracts from a luxury experience. I also found the music very distracting with constant drum machine tracks. If I want a top notch sushi experience I would prefer to go to another restaurant, even though the food is almost certainly better here at unagi. Still a good restaurant that easily makes 4 stars, but not quite 5. read more

Just returned to Unagi. I'm not sure why Yelp has decided that my review and a bunch of other five star reviews don't matter. I have nothing to do with Unagi. I am just a guy that likes to review good food.... Been away for a couple of months, and returned to find the sushi just as excellent. I do not know how to explain it. The fish is just so much better than what I have had elsewhere. Few restaurants warrant a trip out of the way. This is one that does. The staff is terrific, the fish is "oh my God, I didn't know sushi could be this good!" Please don't miss this restaurant. It is that good. Original review: Ok. I have a problem. I need a 6 star for this review, seriously. It is that good. Deep in the heart of hip Troy is the best sushi I have every had (yes, including Nobu and we eat a lot of sushi). It was simply so fresh, so good. The uni was perfect. The toro was perfect. The signature roll (Caribbean roll) was balanced perfectly between fish and mangos (read it was sushi not some fruit dish). The presentation was exciting. The staff was attentive and friendly. Honestly I could go on and on, and I would have to say again and again it was perfect. All the previous reviews were right, this is the best sushi in the area. Very fresh ingredients, great waitstaff, and a modern decor that doesn't come across as sterile. The menu has what you'd expect with some interesting additions. We started the meal with an appetizer special; monkfish liver with black roe in a red pepper sauce. 10/10, would recommend. Then we ordered a tuna roll, salmon roll, spicy yellowtail roll, classic roll, and the Congress roll. They were all great with the spicy yellowtail roll ruining me for all other spicy rolls in the future. The Congress roll was as beautiful as it was delicious. It's obvious that as much care goes into how the rolls look as the quality of ingredients. They're currently sans liquor license but it doesn't take away from the meal.
