I had been here before with my sister, and had been wanting to return sometime. I had the opportunity today and drove all the way from Ventura for one of their sandwiches. Well worth the trek! Five of us at Uncle Bernie's. Two of us have been here several times. Coincidentally, all five of us ordered pastrami on rye. Kathy provided, once again, as always, excellent service, and the buses were just terrific. I love black pastrami, and the sandwich met my high expectations. I really enjoy coming here, the owner is always cordial and welcoming. Tables are not jammed together, and an extraordinary ceiling is a landmark. As you enter there is a deli counter and bakery counter (a bit limited however). The menu is quite large and features deli classics, sandwiches, burgers, hot dogs/franks, various appetizers, salads, soups, plenty of breakfast items (served all day!), plenty of beverages (beer & wine included) and more. They share a parking lot (decently sized with 25+ spaces) with a couple other businesses; street parking is also available. Prices seem fair and are reflective on the economy/times. On this first visit on this nice October Sunday, we were greeted warmly, sat right away, and had friendly service from all. Janet was our server and we liked her friendliness! Food came out in an appropriate time and they were quick to refill my coffee. I went with the diced ham and eggs plate, served with a choice of some sides and a bread option. There is a real Delicatessen and dessert counter as well as the dining room at Uncle Bernie's in a mall that has plenty of free parking. Delicat Essen refers to Yiddish & German meaning delicate eating although Ashkenazy cuisine is often hearty and filling. Chose the huge Pastrami Platter which includes slices of tomato, cucumber, romaine lettuce leaf, two slices of Rye bread that had no rye seed scent and leathery crust. I opted for the mayonnaise based coleslaw, which was sweet yet bland. "Thin" French fries, that seemed frozen, out of the package and didn't have that earthy potato flavour, came with an extra charge. Platter was meant to be able to make your own sandwich, a "Dagwood" if the urge strikes. The Pastrami here looks like a strip of compressed beef bacon with mostly lean meat that looks rosy red perhaps due to long, low heat to replicate a "smoke ring" & occasionally white veins of fat. The Pastrami is sweet with hints of hot spices of possibly allspice, cloves, black pepper. Meat tends to feel more dry, dense in texture, almost like a jerky. (I deliberately ordered the Pastrami to compare & contrast to the legendary Pastrami with Swiss Cheese at Langer's Deli in DTLA. The meaty Pastrami there is plush, moist, sweet, redolent with uplifting hot spices that sing with a top note of aromatic cloves. The rye bread is fragrant with the rye seeds. Coleslaw is sweet vinegar based and fermented to increase a tasty, funky Umami.) I must say that Bernie's Pastrami is good, but not great. However, it gets even better considering it could take up to an hour to get to Langer's in rush hour traffic, and closes at 4pm. Service at Bernie's is rather perfunctory and utilitarian. They're here to do their job and not much else. Schmoozing is not part of their repertoire. Not incredible food but certainly acceptable. 3+ stars. read more

I had a good experience at Uncle Bernie's. I don't think their food is particularly outstanding or anything, it's just a pretty straightforward deli. I came here for breakfast and the bacon was crispy, the eggs were cooked well. Didn't love the cottage cheese as it was a little runny. Our waitress was nice enough and the bus boys kept our coffee cups full. The inside of the restaurant is spacious but it was pretty empty when we came. Definitely more popular with an older crowd. They had a giant TV that was right over our table which I didn't particularly like. I don't think this would be a place to watch a game or anything, so I don't see the need for the TVs. Uncle Bernie's wouldn't be my first choice for breakfast, but they do have a lunch/dinner menu that might be worthy trying. This was an old school delicatessen that has an expansive menu. My focus was on the pastrami sandwich for this visit. The sandwich I ordered was the NY Sky High pastrami sandwich. The sandwich was really good, the pastrami it self was the star. I added some of the deli mustard that was on the table to finish it off. Service was ok. Nothing bad, just nothing exceptional to note. I did order some latkes for the table and they never came out. When the server was preparing the bill, he remembered at that time and said it was a computer error on why those didn't get entered.. not sure if I believe that or not, since his order notes were hand written. It was good but my only complain was the pastrami was cut very thin. Cabbage soup was on the sour side which I liked more than when its sweet, the beef chunks were well cooked and tasty. And here's the big reason for the update - they are the only deli I've found that serves PUDDING. I mean, come ON - every coffee shop used to serve pudding when I was a kid in the 1600s. But now? Nooooo, pudding is too old-fashioned, I guess. Well, I love pudding and Uncle Bernie's has it - I usually get two - chocolate pudding and rice pudding and both are very good. Can't remember if they have tap tap tapioca but if they do I'll give that a try. I've eaten many matzo ball soups in my lifetime so I was disappointed to have the soup lacking rich flavor. The half corned beef sandwich was just okay. Nothing special about it especially the meat. Very skimpy and didn't taste freshly roasted or baked. On my second visit, I tried the whitefish and onion bagel. The fish tasted fishy and I was very disappointed that the bagel was not fresh. I could tell they are not made in house. If they are then the one I had wasn't what I have come to expect from a Jewish deli. Very disappointed. The best thing I had on both visits were the egg cream and Dr. Brown's black cherry soda. I won't go out of my way to return. They are not delivering today so I have to drive 40 minutes each way in traffic to pick it up. Food: Great! They didn't have it on the menu but asked for both matzah ball and kreplach in my noodle soup. The kreplach was as huge as any other from true delis. Felt kinda like having a meat tamale up in there! Haha!! Hit the spot! Without having to ask, my waiter picked up the kettle for a refill. Much appreciated! Came about an hour prior to closing and stayed a little after since the restaurant was still about half full. Went ahead and took the time out to type this up right away. There's a good amount of booth seating. Tables to adjoin for large party accommodations. Four mounted TVs with varied showings. And even though they look like they might want to sit down, they approach every table with the smile and offer great service. I don't like pancakes, but for some reason, I ordered them anyway. They were the best pancakes I've ever had. I ordered the short stack and I am happy that I did because the servings are huge. They were light and fluffy and they were so good. I took the rest home. The ambience is typical deli style with booths. Don't expect fresh flowers and all that stuff. Your condiments and syrups will come with your order. We did learn that the website uncle Bernie's and the restaurant uncle Bernie's are not the same entity. Which is very weird. If you look at the restaurant menu and the website menu, the prices aren't the same and neither are the dishes. So be careful if you think you're ordering online and gonna go to the restaurant and pick up your order. All in all we had a great time. The food was good. The service was good. MATZO BALL ($16.50) REUBEN PASTRAMI SANDWICH ($21.24) The matzo ball soup and Reuben pastrami sandwich hit the spot. The best part? It is in the Valley! I did not have to drive over the canyon to get to Canter's Deli for a more than satisfying meal. In fact, I think I enjoyed Uncle Bernie's Deli more because of their matzo ball soup. A lot of Jewish delicatessens offer primarily the matzo ball in chicken broth and then very little (or none at all) other ingredients. As you can see from the photos below, I got an excellent portion of veggies and chicken. In addition to this, I ordered their Reuben pastrami sandwich which came with fries. It was hot and savory. We came during their off-hours so I'm not sure if I can really judge the service because there were maybe 8 other customers in this rather large restaurant. The person who attended to us was professional and courteous. He came a few times to check in on how we were doing and made sure my water cup was always full. When we exited the restaurant, one of the employees at the front register was incredibly nice in pointing us in the direction towards finding a Mexican drink we wanted as dessert. Ambiance-wise, it's a cute, old-timey diner. It's pretty big, and a more casual restaurant. Their bathrooms are well maintained. Lastly, I found parking easily but like I said I came during low peak hours. There is limited parking so give yourself some extra time if you come during peak hours. I shall return! read more

We've been to Uncle Bernie's many times and the experience is almost always okay. The good things: they don't gouge the customer, even during times when other restaurants have (i.e. when there was an egg shortage). They are family owned and run. The coffee is pretty good and the food is pretty consistent. The other things: After ordering and food delivery, service is pretty poor even though they are well staffed. (Exception, Karen is great.) While dining, if you want more coffee or something else, you often cannot find a server and have to flag down anyone you can to try to get something, like more water or coffee or dessert.... Strangely your table conversation is constantly interrupted by an intrusive loudspeaker alerting a wait staff member about new tables that have come in. So it's a mix.... read more

My family and I went to Uncle Bernie's Deli for an early dinner the other night. We all loved the big spacious dining room with high ceilings and a skylight. It made the room light and bright and airy which is always enjoyable. I had the half sandwich and soup combination. I chose matzo ball soup (there's a small up charge for matzo ball soup) and a 1/2 pastrami sandwich. It was served with my choice of side. I chose the French fries. The matzo ball soup was delicious and was so filling that I could only take a few bites of my pastrami sandwich (which was also delicious) before I asked for a to go container. My daughter ordered the Philly cheese steak sandwich which, unfortunately, she didn't know came with mushrooms. The menu doesn't describe anything, it just lists everything, and my daughter is used places where you have to request mushrooms so it didn't occur to her that they would come on the sandwich. Unfortunately she doesn't like mushrooms, so we got the waitresses attention and told her that we didn't know it came with mushrooms and that my daughter doesn't eat mushrooms. The waitress very quickly offered to have the sandwich remade. It was so nice that she didn't have an attitude about it at all. Also ordered by members of my family were the fish plate (enough for my mom and stepdad to share) and a cheeseburger with a fried egg on top. Everyone said their food was delicious. The service was great throughout our meal. As we were finishing our meals the restaurant suddenly became busy with other patrons so it took a little while to get the check, but we were happy to sit and chat.
