My locks and eggs and onions hash browns and toasted bagel
David G.

Five of us at Uncle Bernie's. Two of us have been here several times. Coincidentally, all five of us ordered pastrami on rye. Kathy provided, once again, as always, excellent service, and the buses were just terrific. I love black pastrami, and the sandwich met my high expectations. I really enjoy coming here, the owner is always cordial and welcoming. Tables are not jammed together, and an extraordinary ceiling is a landmark. Highly recommend this place, which uses rye bread from bea's bakery, My favorite rye bread in all of Los Angeles. Has chef John says at the end of all of his videos, enjoy!

Pastrami Sandwich

Another solid pastrami sandwich in the Valley. If you're looking for delicious hot pastrami sandwich closer than Brent's in Northridge and with the wait, I recommend giving Uncle Bernie's a visit in Encino. At Uncle Bernie's they have all your classic deli sandwich and more. We have tried the following: Full / Half Order- Hot Black Pastrami- The pastrami was fantastic, well seasoned and tender. It was stack high. The coleslaw was excellent as well. Full Order- Tongue Sandwich- This was excellent. The tongue was tender but still had that little chew. It was flavorful like the pastrami. This was actually my favorite yet. Service was great and friendly and parking was simple. They have a private lot with a lot space. All and all, Uncle Bernie's deliver's the hot pastrami craving and more. Until our next visit.

Uncle Bernie's has a nice old-school charm with an open space dining room look with high ceilings (nice skylight), plenty of wood, and nice comfy booths. As you enter there is a deli counter and bakery counter (a bit limited however). The menu is quite large and features deli classics, sandwiches, burgers, hot dogs/franks, various appetizers, salads, soups, plenty of breakfast items (served all day!), plenty of beverages (beer & wine included) and more. They share a parking lot (decently sized with 25+ spaces) with a couple other businesses; street parking is also available. Prices seem fair and are reflective on the economy/times. On this first visit on this nice October Sunday, we were greeted warmly, sat right away, and had friendly service from all. Janet was our server and we liked her friendliness! Food came out in an appropriate time and they were quick to refill my coffee. I went with the diced ham and eggs plate, served with a choice of some sides and a bread option. My friend went with their hot reuben which looked fantastic, and came with cole slaw and kosher pickles. Will definitely be back!

First, I will say the people that work there are terrific. Very very nice servers who were attentive and friendly. The food on the other hand was just disappointing. The Reuben sandwich bread was gummy on the un-grilled side, the cheese was not melted and the corned beef just wasn't very tasty. The coleslaw looked about a week old - Nothing crunchy about it. The coffee was good :)

Huge Pastrami Platter. 2 sides: Coleslaw & thin fries

There is a real Delicatessen and dessert counter as well as the dining room at Uncle Bernie's in a mall that has plenty of free parking. Delicat Essen refers to Yiddish & German meaning delicate eating although Ashkenazy cuisine is often hearty and filling. Chose the huge Pastrami Platter which includes slices of tomato, cucumber, romaine lettuce leaf, two slices of Rye bread that had no rye seed scent and leathery crust. I opted for the mayonnaise based coleslaw, which was sweet yet bland. "Thin" French fries, that seemed frozen, out of the package and didn't have that earthy potato flavour, came with an extra charge. Platter was meant to be able to make your own sandwich, a "Dagwood" if the urge strikes. The Pastrami here looks like a strip of compressed beef bacon with mostly lean meat that looks rosy red perhaps due to long, low heat to replicate a "smoke ring" & occasionally white veins of fat. The Pastrami is sweet with hints of hot spices of possibly allspice, cloves, black pepper. Meat tends to feel more dry, dense in texture, almost like a jerky. (I deliberately ordered the Pastrami to compare & contrast to the legendary Pastrami with Swiss Cheese at Langer's Deli in DTLA. The meaty Pastrami there is plush, moist, sweet, redolent with uplifting hot spices that sing with a top note of aromatic cloves. The rye bread is fragrant with the rye seeds. Coleslaw is sweet vinegar based and fermented to increase a tasty, funky Umami.) I must say that Bernie's Pastrami is good, but not great. However, it gets even better considering it could take up to an hour to get to Langer's in rush hour traffic, and closes at 4pm. Service at Bernie's is rather perfunctory and utilitarian. They're here to do their job and not much else. Schmoozing is not part of their repertoire. Not incredible food but certainly acceptable. 3+ stars.

I'm going to make this short and sweet. Service? What service? Hellooooooooooooo. Yes, I was patient. We had to flag someone down to get refills of water. We had to flag someone else down to pay our bill. Then I had to flag someone down to order pie and then do it again to pay for the pie. UGH. Matzoh ball soup was good, not great. The Lemon Meringue pie was really good. The deli counter prices were mostly blank. My friend wants to go again, I'm not sure.

I had a good experience at Uncle Bernie's. I don't think their food is particularly outstanding or anything, it's just a pretty straightforward deli. I came here for breakfast and the bacon was crispy, the eggs were cooked well. Didn't love the cottage cheese as it was a little runny. Our waitress was nice enough and the bus boys kept our coffee cups full. The inside of the restaurant is spacious but it was pretty empty when we came. Definitely more popular with an older crowd. They had a giant TV that was right over our table which I didn't particularly like. I don't think this would be a place to watch a game or anything, so I don't see the need for the TVs. Uncle Bernie's wouldn't be my first choice for breakfast, but they do have a lunch/dinner menu that might be worthy trying. Maybe the next time I am in need of some matzoh ball soup, I'll give them another try. If you dig an old school vibe, you might be an Uncle Bernie's fan!

Sky High Pastrami Sandwich
Michael F.

This was an old school delicatessen that has an expansive menu. My focus was on the pastrami sandwich for this visit. The sandwich I ordered was the NY Sky High pastrami sandwich. The sandwich was really good, the pastrami it self was the star. I added some of the deli mustard that was on the table to finish it off. Service was ok. Nothing bad, just nothing exceptional to note. I did order some latkes for the table and they never came out. When the server was preparing the bill, he remembered at that time and said it was a computer error on why those didn't get entered.. not sure if I believe that or not, since his order notes were hand written. I was ready to ask for them when he came back to ask how our food was, but he never came back to ask. The architecture of the dining area was dated, yet impressive. The vaulted ceiling was something to admire.

Hot Pastrami Sandwich

Solid 4 stars. Low key placed on Ventura blvrd this diner has those Langers vibes to it - I guess these jewesh diners are pretty much all have the same concept. The food is a little different. As a fan of Langers cabbage soup and #19 I cant help but always compare them. I got pastrami sandwich with a side of russian dressing and cole slaw. It was good but my only complain was the pastrami was cut very thin. Cabbage soup was on the sour side which I liked more than when its sweet, the beef chunks were well cooked and tasty. The service was good, the interior looked outdated and old. It was packed and 95% of all customers were 70+ years of age which was surreal. One and done.

Matt P.

Half pastrami, half brisket with fries (upcharge). Their clam chowder is on the thicker side and tasty. Their pastrami is pretty good, but still nothing like Brent's. I think if their bread was twice baked with the pillowy soft center and crunchy outside, it would have been a better experience. Don't get me wrong, Uncle Bernie's is still a great place to come to. Parking on the other hand could be a bit scarce because they share the lot with a few other establishments. The servers here are always checking up on you and refills are flowing. This is not my first or will it be my last time coming here.

Love this place. It's not close so it's special when I drive over there. I get all the way home and I'm missing a soup. I call and they offer me a credit but I want the soup. They are not delivering today so I have to drive 40 minutes each way in traffic to pick it up. Food: Great! Customer service: Not good I asked for something for the trouble and reluctantly got a soup for next time. Finally I get home, my turkey sandwich was dry! No Russian dressing as requested or any condiments on the side, napkins or utensils. Too dry to eat. The pastrami with mustard cane suitor the mustard. Twice disappointed, one meal.

My friend took me here for lunch, and what a nice choice that was. Nice place. ( I love the interior. The dome-like ceiling is stunning. It was lunchtime, so it was a bit noisy, but that was to be expected. When we walked in, a very nice and friendly gentleman greeted us. After we were shown to our table, we had the great luck to be spoiled/served by our waitress Karen. Down to earth, super nice, and one of those old school waitresses that is hard to find nowadays. A jewel of a Mensch. The food, delicious. My friend had eggs and onions, and I had a marinated steak with scrambled eggs and hash browns. The food was very good. Before we left, I ordered cold borscht with potatoes to go for my spouse. Thumbs up for this great Deli. If you go, I hope you will meet Karen.

Absolutely loved this place! Such a classic, nostalgic diner vibe that instantly makes you feel at home. The pastrami sandwich was amazing! The soups were also really good, I tried mushroom & Matzo ball which was comforting and full of flavor. Everything tasted fresh and satisfying. Can't wait to come back and try more from the menu!

Ask the Community - Uncle Bernie's Deli

Is this the location where Fromans deli used to be?

Yes

How many people at an outdoor table?

Last time I was there, there were about 4 tables for 2 on the walk in front by the entry. You could put 2 together to make a table for 4. Maybe even put 3 together. The seating is right next to the parking lot.

First impression: the store itself is really great. They have a fantastic selection of things to try (dry, deli, frozen, snacks, etc) without being overwhelming. Our little lunch group devoured each one, sharing little pieces of it so we could try all three, but not wanting to give too much away because we wanted it all to ourselves. The best way is to eat it freshly made there. We took it to go and the bottom bread got a little soggy but overall a delicious sandwich. HOT CLASSIC MEATBALL- This was for was just ok. The meatballs didn't feel let meatballs at all, more let chunky ground beef. The marinara sauce was good. FYI there's a little wait when after ordering your sandwiches so be patient. I waited about 10-15 minutes for my sandwich since there was one person ahead of me. Until my next visit.

These sandwiches come out piping hot, wrapped tight and ready to go. Crack them open and you're hit with perfectly cooked eggs and an almost ridiculous amount of gooey, melted cheese. Not skimpy, not balanced, loaded in the best possible way. The Kaiser roll deserves its own shoutout: lightly toasted with just enough crunch on the outside while staying soft and pillowy inside. It holds everything together without getting soggy, even with all that cheese. * The meat version had crispy, flavorful bacon layered just right, salty, smoky, and not overdone. * The meatless one didn't feel like a compromise at all, still rich, filling, and honestly just as indulgent thanks to the cheese and eggs.
