Stopped here on a whim as we were traveling through on the Ohio Turnpike and were sick of eating at the service plazas and SO glad we did because it was all around excellent. Our waitress Jamie was very friendly and attentive, and she shared recommendations and told us about how everything was made from scratch on site, and you can definitely taste it. I had smoked pulled chicken and my husband had the ribs - both were tender and flavorful, and the sides were all top notch, too. The Mac and cheese had a really nice jalapeño flavor without being spicy, and the baked potato was huge, although Jamie told us it was on the smaller side by their standards. We drive through Ohio pretty frequently on our way to/from the east coast and will absolutely stop here again. Highly recommend! read more

Uncle Bo's is consistently delicious!!! From their brisket to their sides, I've enjoyed everything I've tried from here! Their collards are bomb. The cornbread is sweet, soft, and perfect! I'm a huge fan. Their carry out ordering is tedious however, they have two phone numbers so you have to make sure you are dialing the correct line. You also need to pay over the phone with a credit card, and they add a processing fee for having to do it remotely. It's a bit of an inconvenience, but maybe it's their business protocol because of customers calling in and then not showing up. Their delicious food is worth the headache read more

If there were 10 stars, this place would qualify!! Do NOT let the name throw you off--Uncle Bo's food and service was fantastic!! Inside, everything is wooden, giving the place a real feel for Barbecue. We ordered several items from the menu to try, and they were all memorable. There's a large area dedicated for live music and dancing - which was not open just yet. I believe it is a family run business and the owner/chef takes great pride in his work--claims have been made that he doesn't let anybody else do the cooking. All the meats are smoked and prepared by him--a true testament to the craft. Limited hours of operation but I am so glad we decided to give this place a try and not go to that "other" steakhouse which claims to be from "down under". We were traveling through Elyria on a Saturday night and stayed near this restaurant. Don't let the abandoned mall or other storefronts deter you from coming here - this is some of the best BBQ I've had! We had the burnt ends brisket and pulled pork - the brisket is exceptional. The collard greens and green beans were both delicious. And finally - the corn muffin was a very pleasant surprise. Serving sizes are big, we brought more than half home. Fantastic "marbled brisket" which is the fattier brisket they serve. Great bbq sauce which is sweet and thick like I love as a native Kansas Citian. The chocolate cake was very very dense like a brownie and in good fudgy flavor with good moisture level. The pulled pork atop the salad was really juicy and flavorful. The ranch dressing was nasty and the Cajun aioli was pretty tangy and a bit spicy. I'm writing to warn other cross country travelers that may be brought in by the overwhelming amount of positive reviews this place has. It must be popular with the locals because I honestly can't give it more than 2 stars based on my experience. We arrived at 7pm on a weeknight and they were already out of brisket, burnt ends, and I watched a woman order the last rack of ribs. Guys, that's like half the menu. We ordered a half rack of ribs, Mac and cheese, a baked potato, pulled pork and fries. Ribs: hard to get off the bone and came with some sort of skin on the bottom. Also some parts were inedible due to overzealous charring. Mac and cheese: never in my life have I experience fake cheese on a "homemade" Mac and cheese Pulled pork: cold and very odd consistency for meat I have to say the baked potato and the fries were great! Highly recommend for vegetarians! As someone who's lived and traveled around the south for food, I can't in good faith recommend this place to anyone I actually like. I travel A LOT for work and have some pretty amazing BBQ in TX, NC and KC. So I was super skeptical about a BBQ joint that's open until 10p. Rule of thumb is usually never eat BBQ at any place open past 3. However, Bo's doesn't open until 4p, so I made an exception and was so happy we did! For reference we did take-out instead of dine in, so I can't speak to waitstaff. The woman on the phone was super helpful, thorough, and very pleasant. When we got there to pick up, the restaurant wasn't busy but it smelled like heaven. The brisket and brisket burn ends were fall apart tender and full of so much flavor. Whoever reviewed the smoked chicken and said it had no smoke flavor either has zero tastebuds or ate somewhere else. We could smell the smoke while it was in the container inside the bag and the flavor can be tasted throughout the entire chicken. Like the brisket was super tender and not at all dry. Sides: French fries were perfect "fair style", green beans had a good flavor and the collard greens were packed with flavor and cooked perfectly. The corn muffins were HUGE and I wasn't expecting a baked potato the size of my head but that's what we got. Lol. The only thing I wasn't a fan of was the jalapeño Mac and cheese, but that's just a personal preference. I wish they offered a smoked Mac and cheese either in addition or instead. Portions: definitely southern style portions. None of us could finish our food and happily ate leftovers the next day! I'm sorry to say this was only my first visit to uncle Bo's. The brisket was incredible. It has a nice dark bark on the outside and it was tender and juicy. I ordered carry out at the bar and the bartender said you're going to want more brisket because I ordered a half pound and she was right! I ordered 1 lb of brisket, a half rack of ribs, smoked half chicken, collard greens, baked beans, jalapeño Mac 'n cheese and cornbread. Without exception, everything was delicious, but I will say the brisket is on the next level! I've had smoked brisket in the south, and I don't recall it tasting this good. You might think the mac & cheese was spicy, but the heat was taken out of the jalapeños so it is something everyone could enjoy. I would say the ribs were more chew off the bone than fall off the bone, but the flavor was excellent. I highly recommend uncle Bo's. read more

We were traveling to go to cedar point and our hotel was based in elyria OH. We were looking for good restaurants in the area and this came up. We were greeted by friendly staff. We ordered the sweet tea and strawberry lemonade moon shine. Both were fairly mild, which i prefer. The iced tea was not too sweet (which is perfect) and the strawberry lemonade wasnt dosed with a large amount of alcohol. I got the brisket because i knew i would like it. There was a beautiful smoke ring on the brisket. It tasted just as good as it looked. It was a tadbit dry, but moist enough. This was mainly because i came at the end of the night and they were close to ending the night which was my failt. The fact that they kept the meat this moist. The jalapeno mac and cheese was pretty damn good. A little salty but i love salt and kind of meshed well with my palate. The cole slaw was just down right amazing. I hate slaw in general, and i almost ate all of it. There was just a good balance between mustard, vinegar, and mayo. The baked potato had a lot of butter in it and was a... baked potato. The corn bread was a sweet crusted corn bread muffin and was OMG so good. Maybe it is because I love sweet and buttery corn bread but so good. The sausage I thought was a little too spicy. Not spicy heat, but spicy seasoning. My girlfriend loved it. Just a personal preference but I don't like sausage to begin with. Their beef tips are no joke the beef tips. Some places like to cut pieces of brisket and call them the "tips" but these tips are for real. It tasted amazing and had a the signature burnt smoked flavor. A little too saucy for me. The fried catfish had too much corn meal on it. The fish was moist though and did not disappoint with the tartar sauce Ribs were pretty damn good. They were falling off the bone and super moist. I don't normally like ribs, but these were great. Overall an amazing experience. Good food, their BBQ was probably not as good as their sides but from what I tasted it was on point across the board. Today my son and daughter-in-law took me to Uncle Bo's for lunch. I had the catfish, fresh-cut french fries, coleslaw, a buttered corn bread muffin and I added three very large fried shrimp(O. Everything was absolutely phenomenal! The catfish is very mild, not over breaded, and perfectly cooked. I was also able to sample the brisket which was also amazing;Took me right back to when I lived with my aunt and uncle in Texas and he would smoke brisket almost every Sunday, Yum. I love it when new restaurants pop up in this area, especially when they provide great food and service! Hubby and I popped in here for lunch after finding their ad in one of the local newspapers. They are only open Thurs-Sun so plan accordingly. It was "linner" time so the place was pretty empty but that didn't stop us. We ordered a two meat plate and had the ribs and brisket with coleslaw and it came with Hawaiian rolls. The brisket was so tender that it literally fell apart on my fork. It's melt in your mouth tender and thank goodness there wasn't anyone around because I had to eat it with my hands. Hubby devoured the ribs and didn't even share so can't report back on those. Coleslaw was light, fresh and crunchy (I hate soggy slaw). They had this homemade sauce made with whiskey. Definitely a distinct flavor, took me a while to decide if I liked it or not but I must have because I used all of it! Everything is smoked right on their patio and you can tell they take a lot of pride in what they do. Our server was great--very friendly, informative and shared a lot about the restaurant and how they prepare the food. Prices were very reasonable and will definitely return. I also added ala carte the smallest portions so I could try brisket and ribs. I got the jambalaya rice and bbq baked beans for sides. My bill was $31. For lunch. By myself. What a ripoff. The food itself was terrible. The smoke flavor was burnt smoke. I really enjoy a place that has oak or hickory smoke flavor. I really can't tell you what they use since it only tastes like burnt smoke. It's really nasty. Like they rolled the food in a dirty ash tray before serving. Everything has this flavor and the bbq beans were the worst. I could not get passed more than 2 bites. The rice had 1 slice of sausage and 1 piece of shrimp on top of the rice. Then there was no more sausage or shrimp in the rice. It was just rice. The ribs were over cooked. I grabbed a bone and it came clean out. That's fine if you like ribs that are falling off the bone. In the bbq world and in my world it is over cooked. The meat itself was really mushy. The brisket was served in a basket in aluminum foil. The pieces on the bottom were sitting in grease. I couldn't eat it. Pulled pork was served in a soup cup. I ate until I got to the bottom of the cup and stopped because it was also sitting in grease. This place is way overpriced and the food is awful. I won't be back. read more

When you pull into the parking lot you are greeted with the smell from their smokers out behind the building. This is the first clue that Bo's is doing it right. Very friendly & knowledgeable staff walk you through the menu and will even offer you free samples. Bo says, give it a try before you buy. Their pulled pork is awesome, very flavorful and filling. The beef rib is HUGE and also very flavorful. Those are my two favorites, the smoked chicken comes in at #3. Don't forget to order a corn muffin and a side of cole slaw. A new feature at Bo's is the overstock Monday's where instead of wasting food, Bo gives a discount on their overstocked meat from the previous day. Gotta check that out. Recently, I took my travel softball team to a tournament in the area. We had a parent celebrating a birthday that day, and wanted to gather for dinner to the tune of about 30 people. Being that we usually get the schedule for the weekend late, it's hard to make reservations for such a large party. NO ONE would even consider...except this manager, Kelly. Kelly was responsive almost immediately to my message left. We chatted briefly via text, and she agreed to take us in, no questions asked. Upon arriving (late, bc of rain delay) we were greeted promptly, tables were moved, and we got seated comfortably, kids and parents separately (kids love that). Once we settled in, we ordered fairly quickly. I was extremely surprised at how fast we received our food given the size of the party. Everyone raved at the BBQ. I personally got the Catfish with Greens. I'm southern, and you can't get good Catfish and Greens in NE OH. KILLER! I asked Kelly upon arrival to hold a piece of their 5 layer chocolate cake for our birthday mom, which she did. When dessert time came, we sang Happy Birthday along with what staff she had available. Overall for us, great experience! I can not speak highly enough of Kelly, this is a manager that gets it IMO. Food was awesome! Customer Service was awesome! Service was good (would have liked to have 2 servers, but she did great). Building and parking lot could use updated, but DO NOT let that deter you. Sheesh, where do I start. My hubby and I are making a huge move from Utah to NYC, and we were STARVING around 9:30. As we were driving through Ohio, we looked up places that were still open (our bodies thought it was like 7:30, but we realized the time difference was working against us lol). We found Uncle Bo's on our way through Elyria, and saw we had 15 min till close. As soon as we entered, we asked the hostess if it's still okay to order since they are closing soon, and she said it was fine and a rush of people just came in as well. We sat to order and was met with our really sweet waitress. She assured us we could take our time and not feel rushed. She brought our water and we placed our order. My husband got a 2 Meat combo with fried catfish and baby back ribs with coleslaw and a corn muffin. I got a baby back rib dinner with the jalapeño Mac and cheese and collard greens, and a corn muffin. There was a bit of confusion in the back of the kitchen since it was so close to closing time, I don't think they were made aware that our table was still ordering. Anywho it was a tad bit awkward because there was a another booth near us that was talking to our waitress, about how inconsiderate we were for coming in late. The waitress had no problem with us and the guy was trying to "empathize" saying he feels the kitchens pain, etc. What he didn't know was that we checked before we sat down, to make sure it was okay to order, and we offered multiple times afterwards to leave if the kitchen already shut down. We were assured multiple times that the food was being prepared and everything was fine. My husband and I decided to tip the kitchen (even though we were told it wasn't necessary) just because we understand the business and want them to feel taken care of and appreciated for taking care of us. Back to the food. It was delicious. Uncle Bo cares about the preparation and quality of the food NO DOUBT. I eat a lot, and the portions were awesome. The quantity and quality of the food overly justified the cost of the dinner plate. The catfish was crispy and some very well! And that coleslaw was perfectly creamy and a little sweet. As we were eating, we were met with an awesome surprise. Uncle Bo himself came over to check on us. By this time we were the only ones left in the restaurant and it was about 10:20 (20 min after closing). We were trying to eat quickly so we didn't hold them up, but he reassured us to take our time and not feel rushed. He heard about the mix up with the kitchen and really made sure we felt important and appreciated. To top it all off, he brought out a sizzling hot 3 slices of his Texas Style Brisket for us to try (OHMYGOSH). Look y'all, I don't like brisket. It's always dry and flavorless and the fat is never rendered correctly, resulting in a chewy, unappetizing texture.... WHEN I TELL YOU THIS BRISKET SLAPPED, BELIEVE ME. It was so tender we cut it with a fork. The seasoning was delicious (I'm a salt girl so naturally I'd want more salt, but the flavoring of the meat was beautiful). And the fat melted in your mouth. I was shook. The last thing we tried was the pecan pie. Whew ! That sucker was SWEET in the best way. I came in late, so it was a bit cold understandably, BUT, the pecans were candied and the crust was delicious. At the end of the night, we felt so taken care of. And the entire staff overextended to make us feel important. To be real for a moment, we weren't sure what part of Ohio we were in. We are a black couple, and we weren't sure how we would be received (cross country trips are nerve wracking and we've had some pretty crazy experiences). But Uncle Bo's felt like family.
