Whiskey Heaven! The mustache on the building has always caught my attention but I never bothered to look up what type of business this was. It wasn't until we went for a walk while waiting for a food order down the street, that we happened upon this place. There was no way we were passing up a chance to step inside once we saw the cool set up and walls of beautiful whiskey bottles. They had me at Whiskey Club! Of course I signed up. It provides a 10% discount on purchases and I plan on all my future whiskey shopping adventures to take place at Uncle Fossil. Extremely friendly and knowledgeable staff. WOW!!! I've seen this place a few times and noticed they had a location closer to where I live in Arcadia but decided to stop in at this location. All high end spirits and a great place to grab the special bottle for the special someone, and when you sign up for there rewards program you get a discount, AWESOME! I'm rating this higher than I'd like, primarily because the experience was good...The woman there tried really hard to provide great service to everyone while I was there, you just need to know what Uncle Fossil Wine & Spirits is...and what it isn't. Another gentleman came in just before me and looked around confused...I recognized that look, because I'm pretty sure that I had the same look on my face. Well organized shelves were stocked with wine and liquor. He wanted beer, specifically Modelo, Budweiser or Corona. He was pointed to a table at the front of the store that looked like an odd clearance area of loose beers like Stone IPA, Voodoo Ranger and a couple cans from Belching Beaver. He was not getting what he was looking for that day. There's also a cooler there, specifically for beer there. I wasn't able to fine anything on the table or in the cooler that excited me, but that's of course very subjective. As the first guy left another guy came in. The woman there asked if she could help...He said "I'd like a soda, this is a liquor store right? Is this a liquor store?" He was wrong... I think there where it gets confusing...this store has liquor and is on a corner but should not at all be considered a corner liquor store. Despite the loud mural on the wall, Uncle Fossil has a surprising level of elegance inside. When I couldn't find a beer that interested me, I was offered a tasting...where does that happen? I have been here a few times and I am sure this is the best store I have been to. You can find a lot of fine wines, whiskey, and Chinese liquor, and the sales have very professional knowledge. The selection of fine liquors here is amazing, particularly for this neighborhood. I mean they carry Yamasaki 12... at a pretty serious premium but the fact that they have it in stock is amazing! Don't come here if you are looking for your run of the mill Skyy vodka or Budweiser. I'd give them five stars but am a beer fan and their selection was very limited. I'd be fine with esoteric curated beers but they literally had three or four varieties. read more

Very upset at this shop. I checked the website for a bottle I needed, then called to make sure if they had it in stock. I went 2 days later due to me working overtime. I got to the store nice clean place. I was greeted and asked if i needed help or have any questions. I told her i was here for a bottle and she remembered that we spoke over the phone. I grabbed the bottle that I wanted to went to pay. Online was a different price and at store is a different price (they did not honor the price that was online), she said "it because of a membership that is why it is more expensive you have to pay for a membership to get that price". I already drove a long way to get to this store so I was forced to pay the membership and get the bottle at the online price. I felt like a bait and switch. Overall I would say in my opinion that the prices are higher than other store that I regularly shop at (they were just out of this bottle) and make sure to confirm that you need a membership to get the prices listed. Are you shopping to please your brand-conscious Chinese relative? Do you want to spend ridiculous amounts of money on a single bottle without knowing its price? Look no further! All the Chinese status symbol liquors and spirits you want under one roof! Seriously. Let's talk baijiu. Or sometimes incorrectly/famously referred to as, "moutai" (Moutai is a name brand, but the general classification for these spirits is "baijiu"). There are few luxury status symbols in the Chinese household more famous than a bottle of the foul stuff. It's a clear spirit distilled from fermented sorghum (or sometimes rice or other grains). So what makes it just as expensive as aged spirits like brandy or whisky? Short answer: The insane demand. With the new owner and new signs all on top of the store, you really can't expect anything less from a place that capitalizes on the consumers who want to buy a fancy brand name bottle as a gift. When you come in here, you will notice that they barely have any prices listed on their products for sale. Namely, a very few bottles of Scotch, and that's about it. There's no pricing on any of their baijiu/moutai bottles at all, not even the "bottom shelf" brands. When you ask the guy behind the counter, he will tell you a price that's about double the cost of what you would normally find at a nearby Asian supermarket (i.e. San Gabriel Superstore). Even the listed Scotch prices are above average. He does have a decent selection of craft beers, especially Belgian beers, but I dare not even ask what he charges for those. I've been to plenty of liquor stores and known quite a lot of predatory practices (I may be a borderline alcoholic). If you want to cater to the baijiu consumer market, at the very least price your products fairly and put some god forsaken price tags on them! You can do what you want with your super exclusive ultra rare limited edition moutai, but for your everyday stuff, at least label them with prices. It's an economic indicator for the consumer, and in the end, helps popularize the foul beverage. Also, they don't have AC in the store. Just some ceiling fans. Yep. In the hot L.A. summer that lasts 10 months out of the year. Pro-tip: If you revel in the experience of parking your McLaren 570S or Mercedes G-Wagon in an entirely empty parking lot, walking into a warm store with ceiling fans, and throwing your AmEx Black Card to the cashier for a top shelf bottle of baijiu you know nothing about other than the brand name, this is the place to be. read more

Great new wine and spirits store in the busy Valley blvd in San Gabriel. They have a great collection of fine wine and whiskeys, not to mention the Chinese Moutai. Prices are very competitive with online shops and major retailers. What sets them apart is their service and personal touch. They gave me some very good recommendations on red wine, since I'm a big Napa fan. I've tried most of the popular Napa wineries and I was pleasantly surprised by their knowledge and experience with red wine. This place is like a smaller local version of Bevmo. When you first walk in, it looks just like a corner liquor store but there are actually more rooms in the back. They have a decent offering of craft brews on top of the usual big names and a few unexpected liquor finds behind the counter. Limited quantities on each selection. Prices are average. Staff is very friendly and each has their own special knowledge. If they don't have what you're looking for, they will work with you and try to order from their supplier. Handful of parking in their small private lot plus street-side. One star off because we had a hard time finding them since there is no outside sign in English. I haven't been writing reviews lately for a lot of reasons, but I felt compelled to come out of my slumber after my pleasant visit to Uncle Fossil's on Valley Blvd. I learned later from the owner, Fei, that she also has a store located on Las Tunas (the old Country Liquor location) and a 3rd store somewhere else. Uncle Fossil caters to the higher end drinking crowd, no doubt, but that's not always a bad thing. If you want rock-bottom sale prices, scour the supermarket ads or troll the liquor aisles at Costco or Sam's Club. If you want to find occasional bargains for hard-to-find whiskeys and wines, come here instead. The owner is wonderfully pleasant to deal with, has great English, and really knows her product. A brief conversation with her revealed all the tell-tale signs I needed to know. I was on the hunt for rye whiskey, but she didn't have any at the Valley store at present. She mentioned that I could head north a few miles to the Las Tunas store to scope out their rye offerings; good to know for future reference. She was also kind enough to take my contact info when I asked if she could order certain brands of rye that I like, which is great attention to customer service. I ended up buying a bottle of Redemption Bourbon (they also make a killer rye, but I want to see what their bourbon offering is like) at a great price of 30.66 after tax. Total Wine in Pasadena would have charged me 28.99 retail, but after tax and the gas spent to get to Colorado Blvd. it's all basically a wash. I probably saved a few cents when you think about it. I highly recommend you visit and, if you know what you're doing and know what you like, inquire about getting your favored brands on special order.
