The first few times we came here, we ordered the tacos and were not that impressed. Overpriced and not as good as a lot of taco joints in the area. But yesterday, we tried their Carne Asada plate and changed our opinion about this place. The steak was juicy, soft, flavorful, and char-grilled to perfection. Perhaps the best non-authentic Mexican fast-food chain around. I went for a Mom's Night Out with 16+ other women - enough said. The waiter was truly pleasant and very accommodating despite our large, rowdy group. I could binge eat their light, crispy tortilla chips unlike I get sick (and did). I am not very familiar with Mexican cuisine and their generous, large menu gave me a panic attack due to the (delicious-sounding) variety of options. I chose the Matador Carne Platter which was outstanding; drowned in cheese and beef and a very generous portion. The payment process was more difficult than it should have been; having two electronic pads on which to pay for such a large group was not realistic. Factor in frequent malfunctions with the device, and we ended up spending another 15-20 minutes paying. I understand the desire to assimilate to the 21st century, high-tech processes of the modern world, but it was far more tedious than it should have been. read more

It took close to an hour to get our meals. In that time, the waitress never checked back. The next water we got was room temp. It got to be very cold in the restaurant. The music was loud and obnoxious, and they refused to turn it down, The ambience was not comfortable or enjoyable. I wish we hadn't gone there. A cafeteria would have been better. We just had a last minute get together and we got very lucky with the timing and our server. It was a quiet evening tonight so we got to experience the full swing of Uncle Julio's as if it was a private dining experience. Our server/ambassador for the evening at Uncle's was a hospitality professional by the name of George. I would highly recommend him for your party, he's humble, attentive and delicate. Our dinner and celebration couldn't be more spectacular thanks to George and the chefs at Uncle's. We love it here and we are coming back real soon. read more

We went to eat dinner after walking.. Our host was really friendly and took us right in fast. Our server Daniela was amazing and was really friendly mind you we were with our 11month baby. I absolutely hate giving bad reviews but, I'd give a minus 2 stars if allowed to this UJ store. The saga begins: Not a good experience during or after. My wife dined at a UJ in D.C. two weeks earlier. She was offered a rewards program saying she would receive a free tableside Guac at her next visit, anywhere in the USA. Don't fall for this. We took friends to dinner and the UJ in Skokie right between our two homes. Told it would be a 20 minute wait. 35 minutes later I asked how the time looked and received hostile attitude, like they were doing me a favor to let me wait. I told him to lighten up and he answered, "when a table clears up, you are next". I scanned the dining room to find 6, 4-top tables empty, dirty and sitting idle. Then I noticed, a server was working tortoise time to clean, I wanted to leave. The young host held up four napkin bundles and in an arrogant fashion said, "I'm taking your napkins to the table now". He could have taken us too but I don't think multi tasking is part of his resume. He placed the napkins, comes back to the host station where he immediately ignores us and talks to people who have just walked into the restaurant. I wanted to leave. Finally, 50 minutes in to our 20 minute wait, we were seated. Our server was very nice. We liked him for his personality. I presented our UJ rewards card, discussed the free guac offer, and he took it to enter it into our bill. PET PEAVE ALERT: Servers and bussers who bring glasses to the table with their hands/fingers cradled over the top.... If you like that, come to UJ's. I used a straw. This is a lack of training. The tableside Guac guy was great. Knew his product and the ingredients and made a FABULOUS guacamole... the highlight of our visit by a universe. We ordered, We should have left. I really wanted to leave. Our guests were appreciative and said their food was fine... didn't look fine to me. I'll review the food my wife and I ordered. FOOD: We both ordered the chicken enchiladas and we all waited, and waited. Sometime later, after the eggs hatched and the chickens grew to maturity, were sent to China for processing and shipped back, our dinners arrived. The first thing I noticed was how small the enchiladas were. I unrolled mine and found a tiny helping of chicken and, wait for it, NOTHING else! It was maybe a quarter of a chicken breast, dry meat, nothing else in there... nothing! If I had rerolled the enchilada tightly you'd swear it was a Taquito. I brought one home so you could see the inside. The refried beans looked like, you know, refried beans and the rice was dry and unappealing. Nothing 'dolled' them up. We should have ordered 3 tableside Guacamoles instead of dinner. Value: Overall, for the price paid and the product delivered this place should be making a fortune. We liked our server but the service was slow slow slow and outside of the server and tableside guac guy... the experience was sub par. EPILOGUE: The bill came and I paid it without looking... yeah, dumb? Later, found they had charged us for the free tableside Guacamole. I emailed the manager, no reply. Four days later I forwarded the email to corporate and two days later I had an email from a PR guy asking if he could call the next day. I replied 'yes' and gave him my phone number and a good time to call. In the morning my plans changed so I called him. I called 4 times, once per hour. He didn't call me of course so it appears the lack of training starts at the corporate level and the PR/Customer Relations guy... well, someone should check his college credits. GRADE: F-: I've given a few bad reviews and some places write or call offering me free food to come back. I've never accepted anything free as a result of a review and I never will. I've sometimes gone back on my own but why would I want to pay to see if maybe they changed because of my review? (I wouldn't). read more

Went for a mid-week bday celebration. The bday boy wanted the rib included dinner for 4. Come to find out that their menu is limited at this skokie location and we could not order it. The staff were really nice and accommodating, but still that was a bit of a bummer. We ended up getting two fajita dinners for two and had left overs. The steak was a bit chewy so it wasn't my favorite. The chicken fajitas saved the meal for me so it all worked out. I came here with my friends on a Saturday evening and it was a pretty long wait. I think we were given an estimate of 30 minutes but that turned into 45. After being seated, we were brought chips and salsa, which I thought were pretty good. The staff was nice, but it was really busy so they couldn't be completely attentive all the time. I ordered the combination enchiladas and then flan for dessert. I thought the food was pretty yummy and it did fill me up, but I definitely don't think it's quite worth the price. Heard so much about this place decided to give it a go. Packaging was very nice. Delivery was prompt and on time! The food? Meh! Ordered 2 kids steak fajitas and got three pieces of steak with rice and beans and 5 tortillas ? For each order! I was under the impression fajitas consisted of peppers, onions and a protein ! While waiting for our ordered cocktails and appetizer, we were in mid dip of our warm chips in their delicious salsa when witnessing the delivery of a Taco Salad that undeniably was the biggest I've ever seen: just HUGE! If that wasn't a portion fit for a King, then I suggest the Chicken Fajitas we saw a family of 4 devouring! That too was enormous! I tried Uncle Julio's with a group of friends even though the negative rating on Yelp (2.5 stars) didn't make it sound too appetizing. When we got there, we had a 10-15 min wait, not too bad. Our server was a little rushed with us initially but we got some chips and salsa that were so good. The chips were warm and good quality, the salsa seemed to be made out of an almost meaty pepper and were so good. 4.5 for the chips but .5 stars off because we didn't get any plates with the chips and dip which just made it inconvenient and messy to continually reach into the middle. When the food arrived, I was confused would be the operative word. I got the carne asada which was really good done medium but it came in the form of one piece of meat/steak with rice and beans on another plate and another plate with a tomato salsa (a different one than the dip paired with the chips), pretty good guacamole and iceberg lettuce. Having so many different plates was a little too much in the first place but it was unclear whether we were supposed to make tortillas (which didn't come with our order) with the salsa and guacamole. How was it supposed to work with the whole piece of steak? My friend got tortillas which came with her fajita order so snagged some to make some as well so whatever their food concept was, it wasn't well communicated/executed. Also the rice was okay but the beans were too salty in an attempt to give it real flavor. TLDR: The steak was pretty good, I would get it medium just my preference. The guacamole was good as well as the chips. Ask for tortillas. Our server Carla was nice. Didn't have as bad an experience as some of the Yelp reviews say, but I would definitely not come back if it's super crowded. The décor is really nicely decorated, ample room for seating and a great outdoor area for the warmer months! The food is prepared in a scratch kitchen which is something I really appreciate. I was hoping and expecting a lot more since it is a scratch kitchen. Even my brother's stuffed pepper was just okay. Its overpriced! Drinks are very good here; they have a great selection of margaritas! Experience: My family came here for my moms birthday.... The waiter was really nice and there was an incident where he dropped the Corona on my Step dad's lap all over the place... He was of course upset, my mom got wet too but whatever mistakes happen. I felt really bad for our waiter- I understand mistakes happen and that's a sucky mistake. We all have off days. The manager offered a dry cleaning voucher but we did not want to dry clean our clothes it was just jeans and a shirt, instead we said we will take a discount vs a voucher. He said he cannot do this... so you offer 2 customers who has beer all over them a "all or nothing" solution? I think not...AND not to mention our waiter's friends were sitting in the booth behind me and I heard all of their conversations, one thing that upset me was our waiter told his friends that he was "comping all of their meals, he couldn't get the alcohol but he got the meals... " So I don't understand how the waiter wants to comp his friends meals but leave customers with a full bill and wet clothes. BTW the Corona spilled before the appetizers even got out so you can imagine how unpleasant it was eating with wet shirt and jeans. This really upset me... I thought the situation was poorly taken care of. We never got glasses of water, which I feel like it s restaurant staple- had to ask for it half way through our meal bc we already emptied out our other drinks- maybe he was avoiding the table out of awkwardness? Ordered takeout and got the worst imitation of Mexican food I've had in a long time. Paper thin tortilla filled with perhaps an ounce of ground beef and covered in what tasted like Velveeta Cheese. Beans were tasteless and I just threw away some shredded lettuce that appeared to be thrown onto the plate. Slso notice the dreaded "service charge" added to my bill after I had completed my order. When I first heard Uncle Julios was opening a location in Old Orchard I was psyched. Mostly because it meant fun GNOs with margaritas. Then I got pregnant, which meant there would be no margaritas in my future for at least 9 months. Although I'll need them more then ever after #3 arrives. After some back to school shoe shopping at Nordstrom yesterday we were ready for lunch. Our go to at Old Orchard is epic burger, but we were looking for something a bit closer to Nordstrom and ended up at Uncle Julios. At 12pm on a Saturday there were plenty of open tables. And they were still serving the brunch menu. Breakfast quesadillas for me and chilaquiles for my husband. We kept it simple for the kids with kids quesadillas and a fruit cup. The kids were happy with their melted cheese and I thought my breakfast quesadillas were ok too (3.5 stars). My husband said his chilaquiles were gross but I was nice enough to share my very large portion. Service wasn't great. They ran out of kids menus which meant no coloring to keep my kiddos busy. Annd took forever just to get waters to our table. Food wasn't fast, but we waited a little while. To be honest I've never had a great experience at the city Uncle Julios so probably about the same, although I've used them for catering in the past which has been great. The food was good, but I felt it was it could have been hotter. My father and I ordered fajitas which should have come out sizzling. Worse, we had to wait for tortillas - for almost 10 minutes. The server said these are cooked on the premises and they were waiting for more. When we finally got them, our food was already cold, and there was no way the tortillas were just cooked - they weren't even hot either. Well..... here we go. A large group of us decided to venture off to Uncle Julio's after a grueling workout at our CrossFit gym (CrossFit Illumine, shamless plug!!! GO THERE NOW!!) to replenish our glycogen storages and load up on post-workout protein nutrients. It was opening week for them and with that in mind a large group of 10+ "hangry" athletes would be a grave test for the wait staff and the establishment as a whole. I'll just get down to the grit of things. Here are the PROs & CONs of Uncle Julio's in Skokie. PROs: -Fairly quick seating arrangements, we were told a party of 16 would be about a 40 minute wait (which also includes 1 child), however, they seated us in 30 minutes. They may have not seated us together, but they did their best to accommodate with what they could in terms of seating arrangement and location. -Our main server was knowledgeable and attentive to our needs. Always checking up on our drink levels and if we needed more chips & salsa for our tables. The support staff was on-point as well, taking dirty plates away from our tables and refilling our waters on a timely basis. -Cleanliness & decor of the establishment was spot on. Much like the other Uncle Julio's I've been too, the "at home-esque" dining experience was present and it gave a comfortable atmosphere to enjoy your meal. -The manager was quite understanding of the ticket times, thus being reasonable enough to comp half of all of our meals in our group. Good move Uncle Julio's, good move. Definitely don't want our "types" to be raising hell up in there, j/k, but not really. LOL. CONs: (BRACE YOURSELVES) -Kitchen ticket times... CRAZY SLOW. Maybe it was opening day that threw them off or something, but we waited about 2 1/12 hours for our food. NOT COOL. -When our food arrived, they messed up our orders. The food was cooked properly, however, being the "TYPE A" kind of group we are when it comes to our eating habits - the kitchen staff (and possibly our server) had messed up our orders for our side dishes. We all ordered vegetables with our entrees, but instead were given beans & rice. -One of our entrees (Carne Asada) came out long before the rest of our food was served. This entree was given to the wrong person within our party. Once the rest of our food came, they shelled out another Carne Asada dish and gave it to the same person they gave the previous meal too. LOL. AWESOME! *These were really the only CONs, however, they redeemed themselves in comping half of our meals and correcting our food orders so that made our experience a little better. Would I eat here again? -- Yeah sure, the food was good. The kitchen was just lacking a little pizzazz and finesse for opening week. They'll get things figured out and when they do, all facets of their business will exceed their customers' expectations (hopefully). When that day comes, I'll make sure to come back and enjoy their fare. But in the meantime, I'll just wait...patiently...maybe. read more

My brother and his family are in town, and planned an evening out for our family to celebrate Father's Day tomorrow. They made a reservation two weeks ago, for 15 of us. So when we arrived tonight, why did they show us to a table that seats 6? We were all there, so we asked where the rest of our party were supposed to sit. The waiter showed us another table that was open. We're a family! We planned the outing to be together, so we said no...they would have to do something. My sister-in-law saw a large table in the other room, but one of the waiters said that was reserved. Imagine that! We were all standing there so my husband said either put some tables together or get the manager. They finally accommodated us, yet this did not leave a good 1st impression! We ordered several orders of the queso and guacamole and chips. The queso was delicious and the guacamole was also very, very good. It's made fresh, tableside (see the pic I took) and I love that the guy asks how you want it. We ordered some of each appetizer mild and some spicy, but none of it was spicy. And the chips were light, but some were greasy! The salsa they give you on the tables was good, but when we asked for spicy, they said they didn't have that. What Mexican restaurant doesn't have a variety of salsas? They brought us Tabasco. Wow. We only had one server for the 15 of us, so we had to keep asking her for water. Someone asked if she could bring a couple pitchers and just leave them, but she said they weren't allowed! How ridiculous. So she got her exercise tonight with us! I was disappointed that they don't have horchata! I had a Mexican mojito which was good and everyone who had drinks said they were good. The food, not so much. Most of it was bland, and the rice and beans that come with the entrees are terrible. My husband had enchiladas with salsa verde and wondered where the salsa verde was. It looked like two teaspoons, maybe, so I told him to ask for more on the side. He didn't, because he said it was horrible. My mom had the shrimp tacos and her tortillas were hard. She ate the insides, but had to ask for hot sauce to get some flavor. I had the shrimp diablo, which is supposed to be spicy, and it too was bland. It was, in fact, just grilled shrimp with melted butter on the side. Everywhere else I've been, diablo sauce is spicy! There was no other sauce on my plate, and no spiciness anywhere. Very disappointing! If I wanted plain grilled shrimp, I would have ordered plain grilled shrimp! I won't list the other dishes, but my niece sent her tacos back (tacos! The simplest of Mexican!), and everyone was asking who picked this place. For the money we spent, we were all naming several other places we could have gone. The mints you get when you're leaving are good (they're cinnamon), but how sad is that. It's a nice looking place, and we loved that they have tables outside.I wanted to like this place since it's in my favorite mall and close to our house. Plus we love Mexican. We saw a few orders of fajitas come out, and I told my husband IF we ever come back, that's what I'd get. Yet the overall experience was disappointing so I don't know that we would. Very nice waiter. They told me 20 minutes to get a table, which was fine....except peering around the corner there were 2 open ones. Nobody with a reservation was there. Anyways, I chose to immediately sit at the bar table. Daniel took care of me, and did a great job. Tableside guac was ok and chips were good. My only complaint is my tamales were very dry. Had to soak them in the salsa thing to make them less like ritz crackers. read more

The chicken seemed to be pressed chicken (or whatever it was) and very rubbery, there was a sauce in the container with tomatoes as if it was another order that they said "what the heck let's just throw these junk in here and hope they won't notice"! It was horrible! The accompanying onions and peppers were scarce and tasted so salty and bad that we just threw it out. Located right at the Old Orchard shopping mall, this Mexican restaurant offers tasty, fresh food and fun, vibrant atmosphere. I particularly enjoyed the decor with all the yellow mustard and burgundy colored walls and rustic details. For lunch we had 2 margaritas, guacamole (really fresh and flavorful ), Acapulco salad with grilled shrimp and Carne asada medium rare - perfectly done. The menu is nothing surprising. Everything, you can find in any traditional Mexican restaurant. But the freshness of every dish will blow you away. Our steak was delicious : tender, juicy, perfectly seasoned. I would love to come back to Uncle Julio's some time during the evening to see it's staff in action. Such a vibrant place definitely attracts fun crowd, I suppose.
