Two hour dinner with no one in the restaurant. Slow service and average food. Waitress was nice. Where is the management?

I am frustrated with Uncle Julio's. My daughter, husband and I went there My daughter and I split nachos and my husband had a salad. There were 6 nachos( each the size of two of their chips put together). $15 for 6! Nachos!!! A chip, some beans and a tiny bit of chicken. Shame on them. Our bill for the three of us: 1 salad, 1 beer and 1 Diet Coke $ 70! Food not even that good. Very basic. read more

This place really disappointed me. Yesterday, I ordered online for pickup. I requested my order (steak and chicken fajita combo) for 5 pm and I received a message that it was ready at 4:40 pm. So for 20 minutes, it was sitting on the shelf at the entrance of the restaurant. When I returned home, my steak and chicken were lukewarm at best. The chicken was extremely salty, but the worst part is that I requested my steak be prepared medium and I ended up receiving some pieces with a lot of fat, some overcooked, and some SO rare I could not even bare to look at it. We've frequented Uncle Julio's many times, not just this location but also the one in Skokie. We love coming here for the chips and salsa and the fresh made tortillas, who doesn't love floury goodness hot off the press and ready to eat. We had asked to sit next to where the tortillas are made and it was a great distraction for the kids seeing the warm tortillas being made. We ordered the Matador Carne Platter, the quesadillas one vegetarian one chicken and the chicken taco salad. The Matador was shared between two people with plenty of food. Two cheese & onion enchiladas with salsa carne, one beef enchilada with agave queso sauce and two soft tacos with ground beef. Loved every bite. Sometimes you just want Tex-Mex and not the authentic stuff. The quesadilla was 2 whole quesadillas topped with sour cream and guacamole. Our server also brought us some fresh flour tortillas to enjoy, roll them up and eat them plain, delicious. Anytime we have a taste for Tex-Mex this is our go to place and we are not disappointed. Awful experience as we have been there 3 times and had a good experience, was ready for a good lunch. We were there Monday August 19th Stood at the host stand for a while behind 3 parties. When host came to us, after we asked to be outside on a nice day, he had to go wipe the table down with no efficiency (great, that was nice)? No one was seated outside except for 1 person. We sat, the chips and salsa came and that was it! We waited and waited.. 10 mins later "the host" came back wondered if we had a server and then asked if we wanted drinks. He would get them. We order 2 margaritas and waters for us and my 4 year old. He brought our plates, silverware and 2 EMPTY glasses for us adults (no water for my daughter). After finishing a whole basket of chips, still no water, and my daughter being very trusty. We waited another 10 mins, my husband went to the restroom to see what was going on. No drinks were placed at the bar. The "host" was chatting with guests. We have been in the industry for 20+ years and after seeing that, decided to leave. When I walked in to tell them, no one has been to our table in very long time and we are now leaving, servers response was, " ok sounds good." Yep sounds good that we will never be back there and we went next door to Tangled Root Co and were treated amazing the food was delicious. Skirt steak 21 day marinated needs to be reinvented as it was like rubber. Impossible to eat as a taco. 21 day marinade should be like butter to cut. Service was really good. We had a terrible experience, 1st we use to go to uncle Julio's pre Covid all the time and it was so good. We have been a couple times since and it's just not good anymore. the service was so bad our waiter acted like he could care less to be there we sat down and didn't see a waiter for 12 mins (the place was so dead so there was no excuse) we only got half our drinks and when I asked for the drinks we were missing he acted like we never ordered them to begin with. They have gone away from the table side gauc which I understand but the gauc we got was terrible the jalapeños were cut up so big as if they were green peppers, the onions where so big I genuinely feel like who ever was cutting these vegetables was not experienced, they would have had a better chance using a vegetable chopper. The worst part... the tortillas! Uncle Julio's use to have the best flour tortillas and these were like eating a half raw pita bread it was so thick on one side. I wish it was only one tortilla I was talking about but it was every one. The steak was unseasoned and pretty raw and fatty. Came here for my husbands birthday dinner. I noted on the reservation that it was his birthday and appreciated receiving a call from the manager that they didn't have many desserts/the chocolate pinata so that we were not disappointed and he let us bring our own cupcakes and candles. There is plenty of seating outside and it looks like they only have the side booths open for seating inside. All of the staff wore masks and gloves. They also have contact less menus as you scan a QR code and pull it up on your phone. The menu looked a bit limited and there were no burritos, but the carne asada was very tasty. steak and enchiladas - this was enough for two people. the cheese enchiladas had two hunks of cheese in between tortillas that were not very melted. you definitely needed to eat these with other things. the steak was perfectly cooked tender and very flavorful. the beans were also tasty. the rice was a bit undercooked. we got a large guacamole with this and it was perfect. the large guac can probably feed 3 as a side. i can't imagine how tiny the small is! read more

We went for dinner tonight. Sat at the bar since it was quiet. Took over 20 minutes to get our soup. Soup came out and was cold so we sent back. I wouldn't have been upset about cold soup alone but it was the extensive wait for the soup then extensive wait for our food. Service was slow. Tables were dirty all around us. My husband asked for another shot and then our bartender disappeared the rest of the shift and we had to ask the other bar tender. The manager walking around looked oblivious to what was going on. Comically bad service tonight, some of the worst I've ever had. Server largely ignored us, food took forever, and when I asked the manager if someone could check on my meal to see how close it was to coming out, the server came back over and gave me a lecture about how my order was put in after the rest of our party and that makes it take a long time. The place was largely quiet and I ordered fajitas. Those don't take that long. She was clearly looking for an argument, which stunned me. When the (overpriced) bill came, I gave her the tip she deserved, she wasn't happy about it, and then gave me lecture #2 about how it was all the kitchen's fault. She was looking for another argument and I just walked away. Have never had that happen in a restaurant. All she had to do was say she would check on my food and keep me updated. And come by to check on our table occasionally to see if we needed anything. And skip talking down to me when I asked a simple question. Pass on this place, the food is barely average anyway. PLEASE COME TO DETROIT! This is actually one of my favorite restaurants in the country. Everything on the menu is so good, they have a large variety, and lots of fun menu options! This location was fun because in the back they had an area for their stations (tableside guacamole, tableside margaritas, etc.) I came here on a Monday evening with two colleagues; we were in town on business. We ordered drinks just in time before happy hour ended and also ordered tableside guacamole and queso as appetizers. Both of these were so good, we scraped the bowls clean with our chips! I can't ever deviate from my favorite dish here, which is fajita steak quesadillas. Doesn't sound like a big deal, but the steak is so tender and juicy, and they give you a good portion for the price. The chips here are HEAVENLY! Very thin & crispy. Makes it hard to eat guacamole, but they are so good I can forgive them for being flimsy! I hope they open a location in my area, suburban Detroit or downtown Detroit. We definitely have our share of Mexican fare in the area, but this one would put the other "franchise" restaurants to shame! read more

After seeing the overall low reviews on this restaurant, I was a bit hesitant to make a trip here although the food pictures look great and the menu is a bit more upscale than other local Mexican restaurants. However, I was glad I took the risk to enjoy a wonderful meal. I do understand all the negative points mentioned by others: - Food is not cheap compared to other Mexican restaurants (but this is more upscale and uses real and fresh premium ingredients). Prices are reasonable for the quality you get. - It takes quite a bit of time to prepare food (but this is made from scratch and the quality shows) - Parking is not ideal (not the standard large lot) If these aren't deal breakers, you'll be treated to excellent service from knowledgeable staff in a large and comfortable dining room. The decor is upscale with muted lighting, tasteful art, rustic accents, and fine balances of metal and wood. The kitchen is visible to diners, showcasing a wide variety of fresh fruits and vegetables. The washrooms are clean and spacious with a pleasant aroma. But, most importantly -- the food is where the experience shines. Since everything is prepared from scratch, it is not as cheap or prepared as quickly as other Mexican restaurants. However, the flavor is very fresh and different from what you'll experience elsewhere. Here are my thoughts on the different items I tried: Chips and Salsa: Unlimited really means unlimited here. This was brought out quickly and was refilled everytime we ran low. Tortillas were super crispy, fried in fresh oil, and delicious. The salsa had a nice scoopable consistency and smokiness to it. Shrimp tacos: The shrimp was grilled perfectly and seasoned to perfection. The mango, cilantro, and sweet peppers really helped to temper the spices nicely. Crispy taco plate: Not your average taco. The tomato and lettuce were super fresh and arranged neatly. The beef was hearty and not too salty and all 3 textures contrasted nicely with the super crisp taco shell. Enchiladas: Super soft and smothered with a generous amount of cheese. Flautas: Surprisingly crispy and neatly arranged. Rice: Both the seasoned and white rice were very moist and flavorful. Beans: Refried beans were surprisingly flavorful with a good texture. Black beans had a nice kick to it and were hearty as well. Grilled chicken: My meat of choice, tender and seasoned nicely with a perfect amount of char. Pulled chicken, pulled beef: Juicy and tender, lightly seasoned Guacamole: Super creamy and super fresh avocado. If you pay a bit extra, you can have them made this tableside from scratch with ingredients on a cart. Chocolate Pinata: If there's one and only one item I could order from Uncle Julio's, it would be this. This dish tastes just as great as it looks and is worth it for the number of amazing videos and pictures you and your guests will have from it. Be warned before you order though, that not only is this dish beautiful and fun, but it's also huge. It'll easily feed 6 people but you can take pieces home in a carryout box if you can't make it through the mound of sweets. So, this dish contains delicious crispy mini churros, plump blackberries, juicy pineapples, and delectable strawberries all sealed within a creamy, milky thick chocolate ball. On the sides, you have a fresh berry sauce, milky fudge sauce, and mounds of fresh cream with cinnamon. Seriously, this dish is as good as it sounds and once you have it, you may never go back to mundane desserts ever again. Overall, price (which isn't super expensive either) and time (it really does take a while to prepare) may make it difficult for some patrons to enjoy the delicious food at Uncle Julio's. But if you need to celebrate a special occasion with delicious dishes and an amazing chocolate pinata, definitely give Uncle Julio's a visit. read more

Food is solid. Would not do sopapillas again - awful. Chips are great, salsa is so watery. Used to be good. Two trios, quesadillas birria, steak taco bowl-no issue. Service is AWFUL - They are understaffed! Every step of the meal took 20+ minutes. Seated. 0-5 minutes water chips salsa arrives 25 minutes- someone arrives to take drink order, we had finished the chips and water 40 minutes- non-alcoholic drinks arrive, not delivered by server we request 2 additional jugs of water , in 5 water arrives and more chips 50 minutes alcoholic drinks arrive - by server. We are able to order entrees. 90 minutes entrees arrive able to order more drinks 105 minutes - someone checks in on food. ...What is the point? If an entree was bad our whole party would have to wait for another half hour to get a quality meal. 110 minutes drinks delivered-not by server. 120 minutes desserts ordered 140 minutes - dessert arrives we ask for immediate cash-out, we didn't want to wait another 20 minutes for someone to give us the check. The server gave a comment on staff shortage. I should have asked for a meal comp. We missed our movie. No way should this meal have taken two hours and 25 minutes. We drive a good distance to go to this restaurant. The chips and salsa are great. Last night we didn't make a reservation and had a wait. We were finally offered a high top in the bar. We reluctantly took it despite my bad back as it sounded like that was all that we would be offered due to a party of 25 out on the patio. We had to ask for everything from the water to soda to refills. The bartender and woman serving us were pleasant but would forget about us as soon as they walked away from the table. When the fajitas for two at $45 arrived an hour after we ordered, it was the portion we used to get for one. Skimpy on the vegetables as well. The manager came by and said the portions are weighed out based on policies at corporate. He also said things changed three months ago. He brought us more veggies and tried to make us feel better about the experience. We ended up feeling sorry for the staff who were understaffed. The enchiladas were good. Arrived around 4:45, not crowded, got seated immediately. Wait staff was very friendly and attentive to our needs. When we ordered although, he did not state that the Taco's regular order came with two, so when we both ordered them, he gave us the "three" which was more expensive. Never mentioning this to us. Also, the Carnitas tacos were so salty, I couldn't eat more than one, they weren't hot and the corn tortillia fell apart the moment I picked it up. The Beans he brought, which I'm still not sure it that was an extra charge, but they were not hot either. My friend got Steak tacos, the steak was extremely overcooked and dry. We were very dissapointed in the quality and the price. The check came and it was $80, we were confused but paid it anyway. This really bothered me, so when I got home I checked the menu on-line for what we got and this definately should not have been $80. Been there twice but after a mediocre experience the first time, the second time was amazing! I ended up going on Valentines Day after every other restaurant was booked. Considering my first experience and the fact it was busy I didn't have high expectations. I was wrong--the services was friendly and quick, the drinks were amazing, and the food was bomb! Like the Chicken. & Steak Fajitas were hot and seasoned, the Guacamole was fresh and tasty, and the so were the Tortillas and the Rice & Beans. Standard chain tex-mex type place, perhaps a bit more upscale. I've been here a few times, and the dishes are hit or miss. The guacamole is good. Chips are really thin and don't stand up well to salsa or guacamole. They had good chicken tortilla soup, salads, and fajitas. Margaritas are decent. Not a big fan of their tacos or Mexican rice - they lack depth of flavor and seasoning. All that said, I really liked the fish tacos, the pepper cilantro rice, and the spices black beans. I tried Uncle Julio's for the first time with my work for happy hour to have a drink and eat some appetizers in the bar. I noticed beers and margaritas on their happy hour menu but I'm not sure if there are food specials too. I had the skinny margarita! I liked that it wasn't too strong since I had to drive home. Coworkers of mine tried the sangria and spicy margarita which also looked good. As for the food, it is your typical tex-mex. We shared quesadillas, tostadas, and guacamole. One of my coworkers complained the guac was spicy but I thought it was great and not spicy at all! The service was slow, but they did replenish the chips and salsa which I always appreciate. I thought the bar was a good location for a company happy hour as there was plenty of room for all of us to find a seat and stand and mingle when we pleased. I don't know what was going on but we felt disrespected... we sat down at 7:30pm and the waiter did not come back with our drinks until about 7:55pm and once he dropped them off he didn't come take our order until about 8:25. Our food didn't come until about 9pm (restaurant was NOT busy) and the Manager seemed like he didn't really care. Thought offering us churros would solve the issues... Uncle Julio's!!! This is a fun place to go on the weekends with a group of friends or date night. We stopped by for lunch at 2pm on a weekday. (They offer the lunch menu until 4PM) There is still a light crowd around this time. During lunch or dinner rush, i can see the parking lot filling up quickly. They reserve a 1/3 of the front lots for valet. (but why would you need valet anyways?? ) Anyway, when you walk in, the hosts are pretty friendly and greeted us with a smile. We got seated immediately due to off rush times. The dining area is decently sized. I love how it is open kitchen as well. The waitress told us the kitchen starts to prep food as early as 6AM and everything is made fresh daily. And from the food we ordered, it was pretty darn fresh alright! So they start you first with a big bowl of chips and salsa. I like the thin, crispy tortilla chips that they offer. Although the salsa doesn't look appealing, it was pretty good! They ask if you want to refill on chips but i had to turn it down cuz i know i'll end up eating it all before my food came out. Our order came out less than 10 mins of ordering. It was nice and hot! We both got the Tex-Mex Combo ; pick 2 for $8.99 and pick 3 for $10.99. I picked crispy taco (chicken) with tamale (pork/ red sauce) and it comes with a small bowl of beans and rice. Although i was stuffed to the max, i managed to eat everything on my plate minus the beans. i can't imagine how much calories i ate but it was worth it! If you are like me and is a weak sauce when it comes to spices, then... make sure you tell them to have the tamale sauce on the side. I made the mistake of having them pour the sauce on top. My mouth felt like it was flaming as i bite into the freshly made tamale. The enchilada was good too. We got the sour cream base white sauce so it wouldn't be spicy at all. Our bill came out to be $30ish with 2 soda's ordered. It is not a cheap lunch by all means. Especially since there isn't a lot of food but you do feel full. Usually i can get a $2 taco and $1.50 tamale at stores. But so far the items we ordered were delicious and service was good. We will definitely be back to try other dishes! read more

I travel to the Chicagoland area on occasion because my corporate headquarters are here. Every time I'm here I have to go to this Uncle Julio's at least one time. The service is awesome and the food is second to none. I dine in and order for pick up. Both experiences have been awesome. When I can, I do prefer to dine in. The atmosphere and decor is awesome! I love how everything is made from scratch. The first time I went there last year our server did a great job explaining the favorites and how everything works. I'll be back in the area again in 5 weeks and I plan on taking an entire group there. Fajitas are on par and the carnitas tacos, amazing! You can't go wrong here. read more

Wow was this a bad choice. Angry hostess, table with reservation not ready, slower than slow service, cold food. The manager was no help so I spoke to the General Manager....he said it's all about his team communicating with each other...and I said doesn't that start with you and he said yes. Tried the new Uncle Julio's tonight for their soft opening. The ambiance is quite astonishing since the building used to be a bank. Lot's of ornate brick and woodwork at the bar make it look quite authentic. We tried two different Margerita's. Both were on the rock's and were quite good. The drink of the day was a Watermelon and we also tried a Guava infused version. For starters we had table side Guacamole which was made on a wheeled cart. I wanted Jalapeno's on the side and he was happy to oblige. We also had an appetizer of Chicken Quesadilla's. Going to the restaurant as a family we were apprehensive because one of our kids did not think he liked Mexican food. He is now fully converted and specified that he just doesn't like Mexican food we make at home. Two of our kids had Steak and Chicken fajita's. There was enough for the two of them to share the entrée. The tortilla's are made fresh onsite and they liked watching the machine cool them off as they finished cooking. My wife had the Combo Enchilada's and I had the Shrimp Al Pastor. Everything was freshly made and delicious. The Shrimp came with a mango habanero sauce that was very tasty and had a kick. For dessert we had the Sopadillo's. These are like Mexican beignet donuts dusted in powdered sugar and cinnamon. Our server was Rosie who was quite friendly and happy to keep our drinks full and recommend different dishes. We hope to come back with friends soon. This is a great addition to Vernon Hills. Now after our last visit; even he's no longer a happy camper; that or the teenage(adult) taste buds are kicking in and he knows better now! We came here as a large party; since my step-sis and her husband and their 2 young kids like Mex. My step-dad decided to treat us all in honor of the step-sis' 13yr anniversary. We were seated promptly, but rest of the night was off... Service: After waiting for about 5 min; server finally dropped off chips(no salsa). Took drink orders and disappeared. Came back later with drinks; still no salsa. Finally I asked; he said "Oh, I didn't have room on the tray". Huh? Well it was basically like that rest of the night. Food: My mom enjoyed her salmon, but rest of the group was disappointed. Not only in the quality, but portion size as well. I ordered the Guadalajara steak only. I received 4 slices of steak. I pointed that out to the waiter and he had a mgr come over. The lady was polite, but basically said that the portion is a full size portion; its just that they sometimes cut it a bit larger. They claim a 5oz portion is all you get. Um of cheap cut steak? For $22 I get 3 shrimp and 5oz(maybe before cooking) steak? Well, they do also throw in dry rice and lukewarm beans. For some reason my wife wanted to give this place another try after our last visit was a disappointment. And this time it was even worse! We both ordered the carne asada and it was inedible. Her meat was barely cooked (she said we would take home and cook it for dinner). Mine was slightly more cooked but fatty and chewy. I ate two bites and was done. If you want real Mexican food at better prices go to El Norteño. I am done with Uncle Julio's and I suggest you save your time and money also. I waited a long time to try Uncle Julio's, though not intentionally. Plans to go fell through a few times. We finally made it for dinner... and, truthfully, it was disappointing. The atmosphere is fun -- big, open rooms with good music and lots of energy. I browsed the menu and noted that everything seemed to be $4-$6 more expensive than it should be. My husband and I settled on the fajitas for two. It's maybe not the most interesting option but it sated some cravings and some food restrictions at the same time. Food was quick to arrive at our table but we were only given three tortillas. For two people. For a double order of fajitas. We asked for more right away and ended up waiting almost 20 minutes for them. We were told it's because they were making more fresh in the back. I mean, cool story, but we make our own corn tortillas at home and in 20 minutes could make a huge stack of them. Service was mediocre, at best. Our server kept disappearing for long periods of time. It seemed like he might also be taking care of a large group but he was either inattentive or stretched too thin.
