The atmosphere at Uncle Julio's is quite nice... approximating the effect of eating alfresco in a courtyard in Mexico... big wood tables, iron, tile... all the things you'd expect. It is warm and inviting for sure. The food and service on the other hand... meh. It's not that it's bad, it's. It is not bad. It's just so...small portioned, expensive, unimaginative. It Mexican food... there are two ways to play it. Pay in close to the standard and kill it!, or go new school and play on the standard. This is neither. That's tough to do... miss the mark on both. $21 steak fajitas?!?!?! It was small a portion of meat and fajitas veggies it would have all fit on one tortilla...70% onion, 20% meat, 5% peppers... no sizzle. Service - When our group originally ordered, all seemed fine. Orders taken, some special request to the stock menu items but nothing out of the ordinary. After about 20 minutes, server came back to inform us that they didn't have filet for the filet fajitas. 20 min? 5:30 on weeknight and out of a staple? I'm not sure what to say other than ... really? As the food that was order does start coming out, it's clear it's all wrong. No big deal, but someone clearly isn't listening, or checking the quality of the orders.... lots's of room for improvement. Took three attempts to fix the orders. Manager had lots of smiles but not many answers. Great location, great atmosphere, but for the money.... I'd expect Don Julio to make the margaritas himself... table side! We had reservations... was seated within minutes. The swirl was fantastic... waitress was nice. Ordered and the food came out in pieces and wrong. Food made it to the table without silverware. Waitress came back and gave us packaged plastic silverware and said they ran out of clean silverware. I ordered carne asada corn tacos... they were half fat and cold! My daughter ordered enchiladas without the sauce... it came drenched in sauce. They took them and returned them with half the meat. I really wanted the piñata but saw how cheap they have gone with them now...but now charging $33.00!!!!!! Woah! Totally NOT worth it. My husband order stuffed jalapeños bacon wrap shrimp... no jalapeños and not stuffed just wrapped in bacon. Carnitas tacos were also cold. So 1 out of 5 meals were "ok". Will not patronize again. First time to eat at this location. Horrible service. Got seated and waited for 15 min before anyone came to serve us. Waitress was overwhelmed. Could not manage all her tables. Brought us our fajitas with no tortillas. We asked twice, she forgot twice. Our fajitas got cold. We asked a third time and she immediately got her manager expecting us to complain. Then proceeded in quickly clearing the table rushing us to leave. Decided to give it a second time. The manager seated us. We got worried when it was the same table. Within the last week, I've dined in twice and then ordered carry-out ...love this restaurant! Disappointed I waited so long to give it a try.. went the first time for a birthday dinner and couldn't have been happier with the food and the service. Just tried the Taco Tuesday bar today and looking forward to going back next week - the pulled chicken was moist and well-seasoned and the "homemade" tortillas were delicious. $12 per person - can't go wrong. UPDATE: This place has gotten mixed reviews from friends since I posted the one below a couple of years ago. I can understand why. Arriving today, I noticed the parking lot was virtually empty: a far cry from my last lunch visit on a Sunday when it was packed. Once inside, our group ordered promptly and received our appetizer, the still thumbs-up chili con queso immediately. Our entrees took 45 minutes due to a mixup in the kitchen...this when none of the tables near us was occupied. I had shrimp and chicken fajitas. Chicken, excellent. Shrimp was tiny, overcooked and dry as a result. The side of rice and beans hasn't changed since my last visit. Watery beans and over cooked and tasteless rice. One of my companions pronounced her tamales "pretty good." Another companion told me he would never come back and pronounced his tacos, "over-priced, overcooked and tasteless." The service was excellent, however, and the manager didn't charge me for my meal and offered us a free dessert. No one wanted it. I'm disappointed and, from the lack of a crowd on Sunday after church, especially when there is an awesome patio available, I think others have been, too. I probably won't return. read more

Overall, very disappointed with our trip here. I was cautiously optimistic, as we were meeting our friends for dinner here and they'd gone quite often, but we are some of the only parents in our friend group and boy did Uncle Julio's fail the parent test. Setting foot in the restaurant was promising - it was dimmer, the kind of ambiance you might take a date to for a drink. There was a pita machine going in the background with a surly woman flipping freshly warm pitas. We arrived at 6:30 and made sure to order quickly to get our food fast and get back before bedtime for our daughter and infant son. Here was the first bad sign: I questioned the waitress whether they had lengua tacos. She had never heard of "lengua" before, but she could ask, she said. Not even cursory knowledge of what lengua is?! At a "Mexican" restaurant? Oh, boy. Another bad sign was having to take my daughter on a walk around the premises to relieve her boredom during the wait. We watched the pita flipper lady flip pitas, which was amusing for 10 seconds, but she didn't look up and did her job with the enthusiasm of a teenager folding clothes. I don't blame her - I'm pretty sure that if they didn't make the machine purely for aesthetic purposes, they could have fully automated the process. I also got locked outside while I tried to pacify my infant son who had begun to get fussy in the hour-long wait for our food. Then when the food finally arrived, we have to pack it up and go after a few bites, surrendering the possibility of trying the chocolate piñata that had originally tempted us into going in the first place - mostly for our daughter. Regardless, by this point, our daughter had lost her appetite, was complaining of a stomachache, and the 30 minutes we had before her bedtime would be used up going back home. But was the food worth it? ...sadly, the food was both expensive and tasteless, making the wait that much more painful to have experienced. The portion sizes were decent, but you can find better tasting options for half the price elsewhere. I went back and forth on rating them 2 or 3 stars. We went out to dinner this weekend. We started with their table-side guacamole. It was good, but under seasoned. We had to ask for some salt (not on the tables normally). When we ordered our dinners, the guacamole that came with the dinner tasted much better. For dinner we each ordered fajitas. My dinner partner ordered the steak and chicken combo. I ordered the Guadalajara which is the steak and chicken combo combined with a few bacon wrapped shrimp. They brought out our orders super quick. We were really impressed. Hot and fresh. The food was 5 stars. Unfortunately, they forgot the steak in my dinner partners dish. When we were finally able to get a server to help, they brought out steak on a separate dish. The food quality and taste was really good. The three big issues: A) I don't think I have ever been in a noisier restaurant - period. Even sitting outside on the deck. I don't know if this is something they can adjust, but it was pretty bad. B) Service was really slow. They either under-plan or some servers didn't show up. But I feel bad for the servers that are clearly overwhelmed. C) It's dark - I mean really dark. Combine that with the noise levels, and it's simply not a comfortable place to eat. Combine all three points, and it was hard to feel like it was a great meal. They were a bit busy, from the mall traffic, but I wouldn't go out of my way for this location again. I've been to other locations that didn't suffer from these issues. Prices were high for low quality food options. Menu was short with few variations mostly just had tacos and fajitas. The wait time was long. Needed to meet a friend for dinner and catch up conversation but she lives WAY UP NORTH (way further than this far north-side girl). We decided to meet here as it was in the middle. Good, solid food. Reminds me of Lalo's. Whereas Lalo's is a bit dated, this is the cooler, hipper version of Lalo's. We enjoyed our food and drink and this was clearly the hip, happening spot in Vernon Hills as it got really crowded, really fast. I would have to try more of the menu to bump it up a star. Crazy night! Unexpectedly stopped by Uncle Julio's for the first time last night, the first two places we tried going to were experiencing power shortages luckily Uncle Julio's was still open. The restaurant was only serving tacos and quesadillas, due to the power being down. But, it was no matter for my hungry family. I am not sure why this place has such bad reviews when I had such an amazing experience... Upon arrival I noticed outdoor seating, perfect for when is not cold out. Upon entering we are greeted by hostess which takes us to our table and shortly after the waitress introduces herself, very friendly and presented the specials and told us how everything is made from scratch. I liked the decor which make me feel like a real Spanish restaurant, you can see the veggies hanging in baskets and being cut on the spot. We placed our order, got some tamales for appetizer they were delicious along with some Watermelon margaritas. Margaritas had real Watermelon.. The most refreshing thing!! Yum!! Waitress was attentive and when I asked for napkins she brought them within 2 minutes. Our food arrives, better than expected, yummy. Prices are reasonable for what you get, restaurants is super clean, note that if you order guacamole they go around in a cart and cut the avocado in front of you and make the guacamole on the spot. Ive been here twice. Once in the summer and today for lunch. When I was here in the summer, we sat on the patio, at night, and the atmosphere was great, casual, very chill vibe. At lunch today, the decor appeared vibrant and cheery. The service was on-point, and attentive on both visits. Today our party even had 4 children. First off, the chips and salsa are delicious. I went with a few others last nite to grab a bite before a movie and what used to be a large semi-creative menu has now dedicating 3/4 of their second page of their menu to their margaritas. Umm ur margaritas are awful so no need for that. Perhaps bring back the food items like your tamales which where one of your few vegetarian menu items and something you put some actual effort into. Now I was forced to order cheese enchiladas and because they have chicken in their enchilada sauce they came out as rolled up empty tortillas with cheese melted on top. They literally looked like a 4 yo microwaved their own dinner creation. The food was bad, drinks were bad but our server was nice enough. Although apparently she was taught to push margaritas and fajitas like it was the last case of water before a hurricane. 2 1/2 stars currently, I get it. Just a quick comment on the computer system that you use to check people out. Let me just point out dining is an experience and requires a minimum of interaction. But to hand me a computer system and explain to me how to use it and where to put the tip and where to slide the card and then answer a survey and then get an advertisement and then receive my email seems like blatant egregious marketing. Our group spent the time driving home discussing the computer system and the following takeout charge rather than the dining experience. Will never be back but the corporate office should know why they're losing customers and why they have 2.5 stars and why the place was empty tonight. But my issue is not with the friendly server or bartender or even manager as they were Awesome!-- but could not use complete sentences the back up corporate offices decision-making ability. My problem is the games that the corporate office plays as if we who dine there are just minions. Attached please find a receipt, and in the receipt you will see a $.60 charge for takeout packaging. This is a penalty shot because you ordered food and they want to charge you for the plastic box. The manager and the servers could not justify it saying that this is corporate office. Ok, but I believe it's simply greed. I've never seen a restaurant charge for takeout packaging in New York, Chicago or Los Angeles. But to be in the middle of Vernon Hills, Illinois and be hit with this is ridiculous. I spent $100 for dinner and to price gouge something in the receipt after the taxes is even suspect on an income statement. So you didn't charge me for the plate, the napkin, the bowl of chips, the bowl of salsa but decided to ruin the experience by trying to get $.60 For a takeout box? Now I get it but what if McDonald's, Portillos, or anybody else tried to charge $.60 per person x1000 guests a day?? Quite a profit center, hidden in the fine print. I will not be back. I believe you should rethink this before someone gets a hair brain idea to charge for ice in the water or for use of the booth while dining. Probably the worst dining experience ever! I walked in and they greeter was chatting with someone and didn't even greet me. I finally cough and she looks at me like how could I interrupt her conversation. I ask to be seated in a quieter area, and she put me right under a speaker. Thanks for listening.... I sat for 7mins before someone put a menu on the table. No help, no name, just a menu. I look at the menu and he walks back towards me, I asked about the salad options, and he explained then. They left the skin on so t was all slimy, ew! Ruined my entire meal! There was no consistency. Fantastic evening! First off, our waiter was personable and attentive. He was helpful in choosing a margarita and not only allowed me but encouraged me to special order it (spicy margarita with grand manier added) and then checked to make sure it was to my liking. We then thought we wanted just appetizers but changed our minds 25 minutes in, and I'm so glad we did! My husband and I split the pork carnitas fajitas and they were FANTASTIC! The pork was delicious, the sauce was like eating candy, the beans and rice could have stood alone, the tortillas were warm! We had two different people come check to make sure we had enough tortillas. We were heading to a movie after and did one of those, "Oh gosh, we have to leave right now!" moves. The waiter got us our check fast. He was kind the entire time, the food was amazing, it was a great place to grab drinks and dinner with friends! We'll definitely come back! read more

It's not very often I say this, but you're better off going to On The Border. Let's start with the drinks. They highlight the margaritas, and they do have a nice selection, however they are incredibly small, flavorless slushies (or iced fruit drink if you prefer it that way). The beer is okay priced ($5) but that's only enough to bump a bad review up slightly. Now let's get to the biggest letdown. The chips and dip. The salsa is quite possibly the worst black-pepper heavy marinara that I've ever dumped on a tortilla chip. I thought to myself, "Well, they must be pushing for the guacamole (which they do push really too hard) for a good reason.". Sadly, that's where this house of cards began to collapse. I get it if you're a little lazy when you make guacamole, but serving a bowl of slightly perturbed avocado chunks with a bit of tomato (no cilantro in sight) is just wrong. It was flavorless, un-dippable, and just bad. The queso that came with it was literally Velveeta with rotel. I'm sure that if the cools at Uncle Julio's is reading this they are looking at each other wondering, "How could he know? Did you tell him?". Well, growing up as a poor kid in the Midwest, I know Velveeta mixed with rotel from a mile away. Finally, let's get to the actual meal. As easily forgotten in this review as it was at the restaurant. The fajitas were bland and boring. The veggies with them literally consisted of one onion, roughly chopped, and two (count 'em two!) slices of wilted bell pepper. The chicken tacos were gristly, overcooked, and salty. Where to begin! This was by far the worst experience at Uncle Julio's I had ever encountered. I attended Uncle Julio's Woodfield on 3/12 for a bday dinner (it was amazing) and subsequently visited this Vernon Hills location on 3/18 and without a doubt it was a night and day experience. This location was extremely unorganized and dirty. After being seated, we were not greeted by our waiter for approx 15-20 minutes, after apologizing he took our drink orders. After waiting another 25-30 minutes for our drinks we finally got them. By this time we decided it was time to engage the manager unfortunately that was a pain point as well. Finally after getting our drinks and walking away for another 10-15 minutes we finally get our order taken. At this point, we're all ready to leave however we are there to celebrate a bday so we stay. After engaging the manager now for 2nd time, we let him know we've waited for our food for almost an hour. To paint a very clear picture our reservation was at 7:30 and it's 9:30 with no food. We finally get our food at 9:45ish and it's great. Our waiter however, no where to be found to ask for a refill or another drink etc. 2 people after getting their food waited once again for tortilla shells while our waiter we found cleaning to ensure after being "cut" he could leave. Once again, I'm unclear how the manager is even managing. He's no help and silenced our complaints by provided the table with mini churros. The station to get chips and salsa was disgusting, the bathroom had not been serviced after letting them know all the stalls had no toilet paper. Just super shitty that the place was so careless. I know we"ll all say they were busy but I promise you several sections were closed and the servers were too busy cleaning for the night to help out the tables. The moral of the story, the service hands down sucks and the manager needs additional training on customer service. The place needs a huge deep cleaning and the servers need additional interviews. After trying to get a reservation for dinner here for a couple of days in a row , we really thought the wait would be worth it. What is all the hype about? This place is big and packed with people of all age groups . We were a small group and had a reservation. For drinks we ordered their signature "The Swirl" which was nothing great, but refreshing on a hot evening. The Bacardi Mojito was made well though. We ordered : Taco Salad with fajita chicken - so disappointing! Taco salads are usually my favorite, but this one didn't have a deep fried shell, it was just a baked and tasteless one. The salad was just lots of lettuce , chicken and cheese served with a bowl of dressing on the side. NO Mexican rice & beans with a dollops of sour cream, guacamole or salsa! Nothing!! Veggie Quesadillas with a side of Mexican rice - this was probably the better tasting of the three dishes. The stuffing was generous and cheesy. Chicken Enchiladas (2 nos) - unlike the huge portions and grand displays on Mexican food plates, this looked like something you would make at home. There was nothing special or unique about it. The service was pretty bad as well. Our server was such a sweet lady and she seemed to be single handedly taking care of an entire side of the restaurant! There were other servers who were free and aimlessly roaming around, but nobody helped her. A very notable aspect for this new to Vernon Hills restaurant is its Mexican fiesta décor. The food is variable: guacamole (the one not made at the table--indifferent, no discernable taste), chips and salsa (more potato style chip with a roasted tomato salsa that reminded me of barbecue), carne asada (high grades from my partner) and cheese and onion enchilada with a requested spicy sauce (quite good). We came close to the opening day and there were expected snags/delays; but the server was interested in providing good service which overcomes the slight snags. It's noticeably noisy (with music and patrons), added to by a fair number of crying kids whose parents should have chosen not to take them to the restaurant and impose their kids on others. (The rule should be kids always welcome until they are misbehaving--then out they go with their parents (voluntarily)). read more

Uncle Julio's is somewhere I attend annually for a friend's birthday party specifically for the chocolate pinata, definitely not for the overpriced food. Uncle Julio's is much more about making good memories with good friends rather than eating a satisfying meal. If I wanted to go on a date with my husband, I would rather choose Casa Bonita or La Mera. Uncle Julio's attempts to take Americanized Mexican food to a new level by charging $13 for a kids sized quesadilla. They don't quite meet the standard of the jubilant attitude that Fat Rosie's brings to the table with their huge sombreros and loud music, but try to Americanize Mexican food even more by decorating the place with dimmed lighting, as if it were a fancy steakhouse. A friend and I sampled their take-out chips and guacamole, along with some salsa. Our extremely small portion of less than visually pleasing guacamole totaled $10.50, and didn't even come with its own bag of chips. The chips were unsalted, flaky, and not flavorful. When I took a generous scoop of the rationed guacamole we were given, the chip broke on contact. I almost wanted to go to the grocery store and get my own fresh-made Mariano's tortilla chips to dip in a guacamole that is half the price and twice as delicious. Despite this, we found the salsa quite flavorful. It was smoky, not too spicy(although I would've preferred that) and it's flavor thankfully took over the practically tasteless chip. With the opportunity to dine in at the restaurant, a menu item we'd like to try would be Barbacoa Beef Quesadillas or the churros that come in the chocolate pinata. Utilizing takeout for our order may have reduced the quality of what we were getting, so a taste in-person at Uncle Julio's would be a more optimal choice the next time around. read more

It came with sour cream and guacamole, and i asked for cheese and onions on the side because that is how i like my flautas. It was exactly how I envisioned the entree to be. We also had the table side guacamole that was fresh with all fresh ingredients. The first basket of homemade chips seemed to be the bottom of the batch, but upon request, the second and third baskets were delicious. Thin, salty, and crispy. I saw the ad for the chocolate piñata. We ordered it without asking the price. Our server said that it would take 20 minutes, and she placed the order at a great time so we went to dessert after our plates were cleared. The piñata was bigger than we all expected with plenty of mini churros, fruit, and whipped cream for all. We even took the leftovers home since it was a lot for 4 people. I came here this afternoon with some friends and I was very excited to try this place. The décor was very modern/Mexican looks. which was nice. We decided to sit outside because it was nice out. We first started out with drinks. I had the mango passion rita, which was very freshing. I really like the chips and salsa that was brought to the table. The chips were nice and thin/crispy. Then we decided to order the pineapple bacon guacamole, which was amazing!! Pineapple, bacon, and guacamole are a great combination. For lunch, I had the grilled fish tacos. It was spicy and good. My friends enjoyed their dishes too. I'll be coming back here. Lake County needs a good Mexican restaurant and this is the place! read more

First time reviewer...if you're looking to waste your money then this is just the place for you! Poor salsa, small, tiny expensive drinks with no alcohol and poor service are the great benefits of this restaurant! To be fair their 21 day aged fajita meat is great...although not worth being underwhelmed by everything else. On the border just down the street has Margaritas double the size at half the price and they have alcohol! Fajitas are also to die for! I will never recommend uncle Julio's to anyone...and to be fair I've been to uncle Julio's more than once so this isn't a biased review. The food wasn't bad, but not outstanding. My company gave me a grub hub gift card for Customer Service week. I ordered 2 burritos and the hatch queso and chips. The bag was dropped off by Grub hub and it was stapled shut. When I opened it, the chips and queso was not in the bag. I called Uncle Julios to complain and they blamed it on the driver. The driver said they gave her the bag and it was stapled. I believe the driver. The manager last night said he was sorry, but that it was the Grub Hub driver's fault and I had to contact Grub Hub. I've been to other places that have orders out for driver pick up and they are stapled shut. The manager also complained about how he hated working with 3rd parties. Bottom line, is that whomever packed my order at Savage Burrito/Uncle Julio's did not check the order. If you are packing the items, you need to check it. It is not up to the pick up driver to check your order. I am in customer service, so I know how it works. Sadly, I can't understand how Uncle Julios/Savage Burritos is too cheap to to refund or replace $4.25. read more

We were adventurers one Sunday afternoon. Rice isnt great kinda dry, too much happening in the beans, enchiladas were made american style with cheddar cheese and service was very slow. The tableside guac is made fresh in front of you and it was good. They have Unlimited chips and salsa with great music in the backround. I give this 2 stars cause the overall cost for signature dishes is understandable, but they sit on the same plate mediocre companion dishes which devalues everything. If i come back it would be for just the chocolate pinata. read more
