Mild Sausage Ring (6 oz.) - VN
    Vince N.

Now with No Ka Oi Sausage gone, Uncle Louie's has some big shoes to fill in my book, because they were the benchmark for flavor and texture. I haven't been inside their store, but I did try their product which is sold at Foodland Kahului, Walmart, and other local grocers. I only saw mild and spicy flavors; not sure if they offer more. PORTUGUESE SAUSAGE: Mild Sausage Ring - It's not a ring but a "u" shape. The color is on the reddish side. I pan fried it in a cast iron pan and got a nice crust on it. The flavor was savory and spot on with perfect texture. The 6 oz. sausage sells for just under $4 which isn't bad. Hot Sausage Ring - I'm not a fan of extreme spice, and honestly this isn't spicy at all, maybe a weak 1 on a 5 heat scale. So if they're out of mild, definitely get this one as it tastes virtually the same. Sausage Stick - I bought this out of desperation because they were out of the Mild Sausage Ring. Its a whopping 1 pound, costs $7, and tastes almost as good. OVERALL: Full of flavor and affordable. Hillshire fans, try this and you won't go back! The Maui Portuguese sausage is definitely not dead...

Before leaving Maui, I had no omiyage to bring back to Oahu for my family members. I stopped at Longs at the Maui Mall to see what last minutes gift I am able to bring back. I had one hour to grab items really quick, nothing caught my eyes as most of the local products that I see are available on Oahu. I walked around until I passed the refrigerated section, right on the last shelf were Uncle Louie's Sausage. I remember these sausage when my good friend gave me 2 packages when she visited. Uncle Louie's Sausage at longs to the rescue! I bought the pupus size along with the 6oz ring in mild and spicy. I am glad that I found them at Longs. These sausages are ONO! Besides giving them out, I made sure I bought some for myself as well. After reading the reviews on Uncle Louie's Yelp page, I read about the pineapple Portuguese sausage rings and a Yelp friend's compliment mentioned the they were winnahz, I can't wait to be back on Maui for the pineapple ones. Check out nearest Longs for these Uncle Louie's Sausage, for omiyage or for yourself. The cashier who helped me that day mentioned she purchased the sausage to bring to her kids in Las Vegas. They love Uncle Louie's Sausages!! During my visit to Maui again, I will make sure I stop at the original shop! For now, I'll just wait for the Made in Hawaii festival or wait for friends, I know who is going to Maui to bring me back some. Please support local, only on Maui and I totally recommend. #89/100 for 2017

You wont be able to see it from the road. But once you see the "L" you know you're at the right place.

Uncle Louie has the best sausages. No holding back on the red dye. The dogs have that old fashioned, snappy bite.

We had a party of 9 so I wanted to make a reservation ahead of time, but no one answered the phone. I ended up going in to make a reservation. Parking is located in back of the restaurant. We parked in a space marked Hemi's because that used to be the name of the business. They use portable, electric grills instead of the built-in gas grills usually used in KBBQ restaurants. The electric grills don't smoke as much as the gas grills. Many of the items on their menu are pre-cooked. The only thing we ordered that we cooked on the beef brisket. The meat was tender and tasted yummy with the dipping sauce. The Banchan was limited to kim chee, green salad and eggplant, The food was really good! We especially enjoyed the mandoo. The only downside is that prices are a bit steep. I'm glad Maui has a KBBQ!

Saw that this was a new restaurant on Yelp! Parking is behind Lava's- very tight space so turn in…read moreslowly! When we came in, there was a big party settled already. It was one or two workers running back and forth to fulfill all the orders. One of the auntie's at the restaurant advised us to just take a seat anywhere and that's what we did. The chairs are a bit high, so we weren't seen right away, but once they saw us they got us a menu, water and asked us what we wanted. We chose from the menu: soondubu, kimchi jeon, and kalbi (which we didn't get but I'm sure they were overwhelmed and didn't notice since there was a big party). Just by observing the place and the orders placed by the bigger party, if you look around the restaurant there are other food items that you can order. We didn't know and just stuck to the menu, lol but a note for next time! Again, the seats are very high so we were waiting for our food for quite a while. But once they noticed that we didn't have our food, they apologized and got our food right away! First came the banchans, I really enjoyed them! My favorite was the fishcake and radish kimchi. Kimchi pancake had other vegetables mixed in, not just kimchi. I wasn't expecting the other veggies, but it was good nonetheless. Then the grill and meats came. It is a portable grill and each table has an extension cord to plug the grills in. Once the uncle came to our table, he got us started with the grill and meats and cooked for us a bit! The attentiveness and effort was there and we really appreciated that. We then got our soondubu. It was very warm, refreshing and not too spicy. Our once empty table was now filled with banchans, sauces, meats, and lettuce! Once all our food came, the nice auntie came over and apologized again for the long wait for our food. She had said she would give us the kimchi jeon as a "service" which kinda means "it's on the house" as an apology. We understood the busyness with the restaurant and short staffed workers, but we're grateful for the effort and attention they had once they realized. Overall we enjoyed our experience here at O BBQ! We left full and satisfied, but not over bloated! I know Oahu has all you can eat KBBQ, but all you need is some good food, good meats and good company to enjoy KBBQ on Maui! We are glad we chose to dine in and try this new spot on Maui. We'll be coming back again!

Walked up to the truck and saw a standard bbq menu. Noticed everything that you add brisket to was an additional $8 per order. Kinda pricey, but Hawai'i. Ordered a 1 choice with a side and added on a homemade sausage link. Selected the homemade Mac and cheese as a side as that's classic and waited a bit for my food... I don't remember the actual cost but it was around $30 for my plate after everything was said and done... Got my food and found a table. Opened it up and was immediately underwhelmed. The brisket looked dry and was from the day before. The sausage looked mid. The Mac and cheese looked extremely loose. All the items had the slightest smoke... Now these are all preference things and this food wasn't for me. Overall not my type of place to the price. Won't go too far into detail but give it a try if you like bbq'ish...

The ahi had that soft, buttery texture you want, and the seasoning was on point. Service was quick and super polite. There wasn't much of a line when we went, and we got everything pretty quickly. What we got: Garlic Crispy Ahi - 9/10 Big fan of the texture and flavor. The ahi was super fresh and buttery with a nice garlic flavor. It needed just a little extra soy sauce for me, but other than that, so good! Limu Poke - 7/10 My sister actually preferred this one out of the two. Solid flavor and another great option. We got a half pound of each, and it came out to around $30 total. Definitely on the more expensive side for poke, but the quality made it worth it. Highly recommend stopping by if you're looking for fresh poke in Maui!

My wife (super picky when it comes to poke) and I loved it. We eat a lot of poke, and this ranks near the top of our list. The fish was super fresh with excellent texture and really hit the spot. We ordered 0.25 pounds of the Fresh Ahi Ninja and 0.75 pounds of the Fresh Ahi Tamura's Sauce. The Ninja had a slight kick in a good way and leaned more toward a shoyu flavor. The Tamura's was lighter but still had really good flavor. Our family loved both of them, and we killed both. We ate it with a bag of Hawaiian Chip Company Sweet Potato and Taro Chips from the nearby Costco, which was the perfect combo. Would highly recommend, and we will definitely be back!!

We had the honey soy beef, shrimp, pork belly, beef, japchae, and mando, and everything came out fresh and ready for the grill. The honey soy beef was definitely one of my favorites. Sweet, savory, and sooo good once it got that little char on it. The pork belly was another solid choice, and I loved having the japchae and mando to switch things up between all the meat. And apparently we picked the right time to go because the soju was 50% off . Definitely not mad at that. Our waiter was amazing too. Super attentive, friendly, and really added to the whole experience without hovering over us. Good service always makes a difference, especially somewhere like Korean BBQ where you're ordering throughout the meal. What I like about Gen is that it's not just about the food, it's the whole experience. Sitting around the grill, cooking everything how you like it, ordering different things to try... it makes lunch feel a little more fun. Our party of 10 had a bill of $392.61. To pay, I provided 8 gift cards consisting of six $50 gift cards, one card with a balance of $22.24, and one card with a balance of $14.28. I am certain of the balances on these cards before they were handed to our server. When the cards were returned, I only received 7 cards back, despite providing 8. The server also stated that I had only given her five $50 gift cards, which was incorrect. After I pointed out that I had eight gift card sleeves and that the numbers were not adding up, the manager became involved. A receipt showed a gift card with a remaining balance of $10.96. Based on the last four digits listed on that receipt, that card had not originally been returned to me. The server later brought back a card matching those digits and claimed it was one of the cards I had provided. However, I am certain that I did not provide a card with a $10.96 balance. The most frustrating part was not the money itself, but how the situation was handled. I left feeling that my concerns were dismissed rather than investigated. Even though I disputed the discrepancy, I still paid the remaining balance and left a 20% tip because I respect the restaurant industry and understand that hospitality is a team effort. I am requesting that GEN review the transaction history and security footage to determine what happened. I hope management takes this matter seriously because trust is important when guests hand over multiple gift cards or forms of payment. Unfortunately, this experience has left a lasting negative impression and has made me hesitant to return.
