Uncle Tank's Kitchen & Bar in Somerset, NJ, offers an old school bar feel with great food. I have to start this review off with my party walked in late. Kitchen was basically closed down and they still open the kitchen up and served us. Just for that hospitality I'm giving them 5 stars on service. I was told they have been open for over 50 years but had a newer owner that did a ton of renovation. We had an amazing conversation with an old WWI vet about this being his first bar he went to and has never stopped. The menu has a strong selection of bar food and appetizers like fried pickles and buffalo wings. We got the Garlic Parmesan Wings and they hit the spot. Uncle Tank's is known for its burgers, particularly the "Tank's Build A Burger," which is juicy and cooked to perfection. this spot is very charming, with a smaller dining area separated from their bar room. Service was accommodating and swift. We started with a pretzel, and were surprised to get two! The dipping sauce options were delicious, both spins on regular beer cheese. We had fish n chips and another sandwich, which included a spin on a French onion soup for dipping sauce. Great service from the bartenders, delicious desserts, and great drinks. Casual and fun atmosphere, especially on the right half of the restaurant where the bar is. All of the chicken sandwiches & burgers that I've had here were great. But the roast beef on the Big Dipper sandwich was overdone & a bit chewy. My friend said the same about the Big Bad Wolf sandwich that has pork belly and pulled pork. Overall this spot is great for a casual lunch or hanging out at the bar for drinks. read more

The food was good. I had the sweet Carolina and my wife did the cheeseburger with fries. The sandwiches were nice and hot and everything was fresh. We were looking for somewhere to dine with our pups and we're so glad we found Uncle Tank's! You can't find a more dog friendly place than this! Everyone was so friendly and welcoming of us and our dogs. Our server Trevor was awesome! We dined outside since we had our pups and were able to order from the dog menu for them. --Proceeds are donated to a local shelter. There's an area with a few tables outside some were bench style. We opted for way more apps than we could handle but everything was delicious. Also love that you can order nachos in different sizes. Our drinks were good as well. You definitely don't want to skip out on dessert or the house hot sauce. Our dogs had the best time. We look forward to returning. :) read more

This time, I opted for saviry Mamma Mia sausage dip with crostini bead, Bruschetta that was to die for with its perfectly light and crunchy flavor and my absolute fave Chesapeake fries with that Old Bay seasoning and delicious queso and topped it all off with my face Blue Raspberry Lemonade. Such a lovely place, and very pet-friendly! Everyone who took care of us was wonderful - super friendly, kind service. They immediately brought us a water bowl for our dog and even had a special dog menu (which, of course, we had to get something from - it benefits a local shelter!). Our food was delicious - we got burgers (one turkey BYO, and the other a featured beef burger) and the truffle Parmesan fries to share. Even the side salad was great! This was a stop on a road trip but if we're ever coming through near the area again, we would come back in a heartbeat. Highly recommend, and especially if you're looking for a dog-friendly patio with good food and amazing people! read more

This is such a great hidden gem! First time eating here and each item was better than the last. The spot is small inside but we went right at dinner time, about 5 PM, and got an inside table right away. Our food was a bit slow to come out but our server was quick to apologize and we of course were in no hurry. Overall, a great dinner and experience! Super fun place located not too far away in an area I have never been to before. Easy parking and outside, dog friendly, seating. Inside it looks a little bit like a brewery with some table games (and a pair of guitars on the wall that are apparently available for people that can actually play). Service is friendly, and the menu covers probably enough ground to keep anyone happy. The Grilled Cheese - House-roasted turkey breast, tomato, roasted garlic aioli, provolone (weekly special) was very good though the house made chips were a little bit too well done. The OMG!!! I LOVE THAT! - Spinach and articoke dip at its hot and gooey finest, served with grilled garlic crostini starter was a fresh take on something I have seen many times on menus elsewhere. I wish the beer list was a little more crafty, but I am not going to fault them on that. I had a horrible experience at Uncle Tanks. This was my second visit. I ordered the IL Caprese sandwich with crispy chicken. It came out with a huge sub roll and 3 chicken tenders on it. When you order crispy chicken, why would you ever expect it to be a sandwich with chicken tenders. I told the manager and asked for something else. The manager insisted and came back twice to my table to tell me that crispy chicken is not a chicken cutlet. They refused to give me my money back. The customer is never right at this place. They have no respect for customers. I will never be back! read more

So I was invited to meet with a friend here. This place is absolutely amazing from the decor, the bathrooms, the food and rhe employees. It is very hard in my opinion to find a place to go out foe freinds thar actually has good food. Really good tasting food. Besides the wings and bar pies. Theee menu is very diverse. The bar tenders are funny friendly attentive and make it foe a nice atmosphere and experience. I have had a few dishes heee. Thus in one of my favorites. But it doesnt mean the others fall short. We have been here a few times. It's quite close for us and it's fantastic having something so close to home. The restaurant is always busy. Definitely loud but the food and service is great. They have some great specials that are always tasty and their regular menu is also sufficiently different and good to set them apart from standard bar fare. They do an amazing job decorating for various holidays and I love their support for local animal shelters and dog friends! Sat at the bar both times and really enjoyed my experiences. The food is very good and pretty garlicky. I had the Van Helsing, a garlic chicken sandwich, and it was delicious. I upcharged for fries and I'm glad I did because they paired well with the Dijon horseradish and tomato coulis sauces I decided to order. Another time, I ordered the chicken Pisa and this might be my favorite so far. The marinara was fresh and garlicky and the shaved cheeses added richness. I tried the bread pudding, which was pumpkin flavor at the time, and it was so tasty. The whipped cream added some creaminess to it and the whole pecans added a great crunch. I also tried the specialty cocktails and they were pretty good. The service is amazing and welcoming. The bartenders were great and the owner was really friendly. I came after work both times and it was a nice place to unwind, watch TV, or play on my phone. Bonus points for the purse hooks and the sockets. Highly recommended! read more

Went on a Sunday - never been and it gave the ambiance of a "dive bar" on the web. Everything is so clean (not a bad thing), menu items are amazing. However, it just doesn't make sense. The bar attendees seem to be locals and are loud, obv having a good time but it's a small space so it's almost obnoxious. Th bartender is using a jigger for her drinks (sadly we had a weak margarita) and the manager thought it was a good time to take inventory - just bizarre. Wings were ok, pierogis were delicious and so was the bacon cheeseburger. It ended up being $26 for a margarita bc we asked for a shot. Not sure I would come back. Went for dinner on a week night and really enjoyed ourselves. We ordered wings(buffalo) for an appetizer then 2 entrees - roast beef sandwich and a burger. All the food was great. We also had 2 cocktails that were great in flavor and well priced. The only piece that needed improvement was the service. My mom and I went away for a weekend to the Philadelphia Flower Show and Grounds for Sculpture in NJ. I was researching some smaller towns along the way for us to stop on the way there and back to walk around or get something to eat. My research led me to Uncle Tanks. The menu could not have been more perfect for us in terms of having a variety of things we each like. My mom typically eats meat-free meals and loves pasta while I have some food allergies and love sandwiches. We have Polish heritage so seeing pierogies on the menu was interesting to us! We expected this restaurant to be a bit more in the town or possibly a busy plaza and weren't sure we were heading the right way but it is on a sort of (to us) random road. The restaurant immediately impressed us with how bright and clean it was. We were greeted so warmly that we felt very comfortable right away. This ended up being such an amazing restaurant, we ate here again on our way back to NY. My mom even got an order or pierogies to take home for dinner. Every single thing we tried was excellent. Normally, with such a varied menu, there's hits and misses or just everything might be average. That was not the case here. All the food tasted fresh and delicious. The Big Dipper with Au just was massive and incredible! It was one of the best version of this type of sandwich I've eaten. The onions on the pierogies were so good, I'd eat a bowl of them. The Reuben style sandwich said it was supposed to come on a caraway roll but it came on a regular roll. The beer kraut was delicious and not shredded like typical sauerkraut. I wish every Reuben had it as a topping! The roll tasted like it might have been toasted slightly with butter, which for me wasn't needed since the corned beef was juicy. If we hadn't been so full, we'd have loved to try dessert. If this restaurant was local, we'd be there weekly. The second time we went, there was a party going on. We still received attentive and incredibly friendly but professional service. I wish I'd gotten the names of our servers because both of them deserve compliments on really making the experience even better. If you are anywhere in the area, I'd suggest going out of your way if you need to in order to stop here. I walked in and ordered takeout! I absolutely loved the upbeat/bar/family type feel. The wait staff was excellent. Tyler and the young lady (leaving shift) at the hostess stand offered suggestions on the menu. Fish and Chips was fried to perfection. Old Bay fries crisp and hot, not salty at all. The pictures look good! Thought it was going to be an elevated versions of the dishes. It was just meh. I would describe it as more healthy less tasty versions of the dishes. So if that's your goal, I would recommend. We had already decided it was a miss, but then at the end a lady who works there came up and cinched it for us. Our daughter is allergic to dairy, so she always orders her pizza without cheese. This woman comes up and exclaims "everyone in the back just has to know why you didn't get cheese". She was so astonished and somewhat mocking about it. Like, lady, it isn't that big of a deal. They must not have much going on if they feel the need to fixate on and marvel at an omission of one ingredient, then come out and embarrass a child about not eating something they're allergic to.
