I was heading to Tenkatori on Sawtelle just north of Olympic to get the best fried Japanese Chicken called kaarage that beats anything I've ever eaten in the fried chicken category and it's gluten free. As a result of construction on the second level I had to walk back down to the ground floor and that put me right in front of Uncle Tetsu Japanese Cheesecake. Whether this was an intentional rerouting paid by Uncle Tetsu or not, I had to check this out. I've had Italian Cheesecake, NY cheesecake and 1/100th of the cheesecake's at The Cheesecake Factory, but never Japanese cheesecake. My first question is always whether the food is Gluten Free and the answer was they had 2 whole cheesecakes: regular and mango. Somewhat cray cray at $23 dollars but I rationalized its 4 decent size slices & when will I ever get Japanese cheesecake let alone Uncle or Aunt Tetsu's. There was a pleasant young man who when posed the question which I should choose suggested the regular and so it is. Amen and Awomen. I'll end my drivel by saying the slice was light, yet firm. Creamy and delicious. One quarter was enough and I am dreaming of more Japanese cheesecake. I've been here so many times, I have a rewards card that's nearly complete for a free one! I've tried just about every flavor here but my fave is the black sesame. You can't go wrong with the original, though! Pro tip: if you freeze it overnight, it becomes really dense. Just opened this location! My love for Uncle tetsu stemmed over 10 years ago when I tried in Sydney and accidentally left it at a supermarket bc we got caught up buying Tim tams. Went to Uncle Tetsu on a Sunday around 11:40 A.M. and ordered original and strawberry to which we were informed that they only had strawberry available at the moment. We asked if they were out of the other flavors all day or if others would be available soon. They said it would be available in 40 minutes, but said an hour to be safe. We decided to stay around the area to wait for the original since we lived in the valley and didn't want to do another drive. Came back at 12:35 PM and were ready to order strawberry and the original and we were told that they now only had original because the customer ahead of us ordered the last strawberry. I didn't realize that it would be challenging to get flavors we wanted. I assumed that the store would have the different flavors ready when they opened but it seems they can only do one flavor at a time. I suggest calling ahead to see if they have what you want. I did wish that they at least gave us a heads up when we initially came to order that they had a limited amount of strawberry and will probably run out by the time we came back in an hour since we said we will wait for the other flavors. This experience has certainly left a sour taste in my mouth and will probably think twice about coming back. The product is good, but it wasn't worth the hour we waited just to have one finished product because that's all they had LOL. It just seems very inefficient. read more
