Underwood's Cafeteria is highly rated and I see why! The staff are great ladies and it was packed in there. Great spot for locals and us out of town folk. I took mine food to go and ate it at the park. There was so much food! The fried chicken was crispy and delicious. I loved the homemade rolls and potato salad too. It's a mix of buffet and cafeteria - you pick a meat, which they plate for you, then you help yourself to as many of the sides as desired. Its was burned into my brain when I saw that thinnly sliced so called brisket when I first ever walked in that place in Odessa . i wouldnt eat it as a 4th grader and from what Ive heard they haven't changed it.. I knew what real bbq is and that wasn't it to me. . Must be to alot of folks but hey thats ok. Its been soylent green for 60 years. The cobbler tasted good tho. Love eating here when we come to town. But the air conditioner was not working as you walked in and thru the line to get to the ordering line. In the Texas Heat, Air Conditioner is a MUST. Felt so much heat from the food line and with all the people. Found the Air Conditioner to be the coldest in the far back room. read more

I had high hopes for this one. Expectations were not met. We passed through town twice inside of a week. On the way back through town I made a point to stop here. Atmosphere was outdated and boring. Bathroom was small and hot. The food looked good, but wasn't. Mashed potatoes and gravy did not taste good. I love any kind of potato, but did not finish this one. Love this place. Ranch is close by so we eat here every time we come out. After probably 20 visits, I'm having a hard time seeing how you can give Underwoods less than 4 stars. Can eat anywhere I want when I want in Dallas, and I'll come here for their fried chicken, brisket and cobbler any day of the week. If you have a problem with the decor you're trying way too hard. In town on business and was highly recommended to visit Underwood's. Apparently a famous place to visit and didn't disappoint! Not much of a meat eater but it was a delight to eat. Meat falls apart while trying to eat it which is a good sign! All the sides tasted good and the cobbler is to die for....and all you can eat!! Grab a small bowl, and fill it with a side. Then grab another one and fill it with another (or more of the same) side. Helpful tip from the guy behind the counter: "If your tray gets full, put your silverware in your pocket." Be sure and get at least two of the cobblers (peach, cherry, and apple). Don't worry, the lady with the cart in the dining room will offer to top them off with whipped cream. The fried chicken earns an 8/10, the chicken fried steak a 7/10, the sides a 5/10 (think high school cafeteria green beans), the desserts a 6/10, and the service 12/10. BEST rolls you will ever have! The staff are super sweet and they walk around the dining hall asking if you want fresh rolls out of the oven. When I'm traveling through Brownwood, I always stop at Underwood's to eat. The only reason I really go there is for their peach cobbler (love it). On our journey to see family in West Texas, we always stop by Underwood's before and after since our route is along 183/84. We like that it is cafeteria style, so we're in and out quickly on a road trip. I will admit, we don't ever change what we get. I always flirt with the Fried Chicken or the Beef Steak, but the Chicken Fried Steak is where it's at. That, paired with some of the staple veggie sides- mashed potatoes, corn, green beans, etc- and with gravy? Absolutely-thankful-we-only-visit-a-few-times-a-year-artery-clogging-goodness. The rolls are fantastic, too. If you miss out on them while in the line, you can get one as one of the employees runs around with the fresh-baked, piping-hot ones to all the tables. Don't forget the cobbler. My vote on favorite flavor is apple, but they have 3 to chose from. Also, the prices are about what you'd pay at a normal sit-down type restaurant. However, the price is based on the meat of the meal and the rest of the items are included- whether you get 1 mashed potato side or 3 mashed potato sides. So it can be a good deal, especially for hungry kids. We just really like the CFS. It is definitely in the top 3 of my favorite CFS spots. Oh... And a downside is they are closed on Wednesdays....... except the day before Thanksgiving. We found that one out in a past year and there was much rejoicing. read more

My wife and I have been to underwoods 2 times the past 2 weeks. Both times, there were some staff NOT wearing masks, they were operating at 100% occupancy with no tables blocked off...AND they allowed customers to walk in and through the buffet line without masks on. (And there's a governor mandated mask law in effect this week) I believe money trumps good safe customer service with this establishment. We will not be going back due to their irresponsibility. read more

Passing through Brownwood, and saw the big ole' sign on the side of the road. We were looking for Texas BBQ and thought we'd give Underwood's a shot, since it had been in business for so long-what could go wrong? I had the roast chicken, but then regretted not ordering the fried chicken, because the skin was not crispy at all. My husband enjoyed the BBQ beef steak. COBBLER TO DIE FOR AND DELICIOUS BBQ since 1946 -- a Brownwood institution. My Dad fell in love with Underwood's Pit BBQ in the 1950s (before they became a cafeteria) when he was a student at TCU who came to Brownwood for ROTC "reasons." Later he'd take me here (1970s) for a foodie road trip. Now (2010s) I bring my kids - not as a destination, but as a great place to eat in Brownwood. Nostalgia extra :) The Underwood family still owns and operates this place -- 3rd generation took over a few years ago. We hope at some point they will update the awful 1970s motel interior, but we look at the clientele and we are sure they would object. Everything on the walls is clean, it's just DATED and BOOORRRRRIIIIINNNNGGG! But I don't drop stars for decor, so I'm just saying. More ladies rooms are needed too -- 2 toilets in a closet is not nearly acceptable for as busy a place as this is. Let's just say the ventilation can't keep up and move on. They have been renovated with attractive new tile walls, but not enlarged. We helped ourselves to Underwood's delicious fall-off-the-bone tender pork ribs. The only honk that gives us a short pause is that they are perfect square 2-run portions, but one bite makes us forgive that processed-looking visual. Ribs are flavorful, tender, and moist. Sauce is baked on but not overwhelming. We also ordered some crispy fried chicken. Seasoned with salt only, Underwood's fried chicken is an indulgence for us. Sides are the old inoffensive reliables-- canned seasoned green beans, fluffy smooth mashed potatoes and cream gravy, smooth porky pinto beans or canned pork and beans, buttered baby carrots and canned corn. For salads you get Underwood's homemade potato salad, slaw, and several kinds of pickled veg -- pickled okra, pickled cucumbers, pickled cherry peppers and pickled jalapeños. THREE kinds of cobbler await the hungry -- Peach, cherry, and apple. All made with canned pie fillings (not seasonal fruit) BUT well laced with tender flaky homemade pie crust dusted with sugar and cinnamon (peach and apple only). Ok, so this cobbler is TO DIE FOR. It's better than your grandmas, even if she used fresh fruit. REALLY. Underwood's is a must stop for us, not just because of my family connection here but because the food is consistent and outstanding. read more
