Elham is a wonderful and kind seamstress, this is my first real positive experience with dry cleaning as well as my first experience with alterations in Berkeley, but I'm glad I found this nice shop right around where I'm currently living. My first experience was with altering an XL vest that I ordered online into an XS/S size, and Elham professionally fitted me right then and there and called me back in for a refitting to see if I'm satisfied with the alterations before giving the article back to me and charging me for her service ($60, but given how much she cut off and the fact that it was faux leather, I thought it was still a good price)! After that, I've brought my dry cleanables here and found that an oversized knit sweater goes for around $6-7 (which I think is pretty cheap) and the turnaround time is approximately 2 days (which is super fast for me!). As far as I can tell, nothing she has cleaned for me has shrunk or been damaged, which brings me to point out the fact that she definitely knows her fabrics well and knows what works and what does not for a great variety of clothes. I think the price for service is fair and actually a bit cheaper than what I'm used to paying, so I definitely give Elham and her shop five stars for their quality of service as well as their speedy and prompt service time. Even though people have said her services are a bit pricier than other cleaners or alterations around this area, I definitely think her work is noticeably more refined and neat. One thing to note about Elham's tailor and cleaning shop is that they don't take card, just cash and I believe checks. read more

It is always disappointing to go to a 5-star place and end up with a different experience. I took in a few things. It was a little pricey, but certainly better than having good quality but ill-fitting clothes sadly ignored in my closet. She seemed to be in a hurry, and I left the store nervous that she didn't understand what I wanted. Results? Two items weren't quite right, and the third wasn't touched. Unfortunately I didn't realize until I had paid and was home. She worked on them eventually, but it was a hassle. I found her a decade ago when I was looking for someone who would do a good job hemming jeans (and maintaining the faded edge). Excellent, kind, warm and friendly service. Came here because it was on my walk back home, and the Yelp reviews were glowing. I'm getting married in less than 50 days (eek) and my petite J.Crew dress just needed a little finishing touches before the Big Day. I dropped in on a Friday afternoon (lunch is 2-230, by the way), and after trying on my dress w/ the appropriate shoes and undergarments, Ellie had nipped-and-pinned me in about 6 minutes flat. The only modifications needed were to shorten the shoulder straps (I have a small torso) to prevent peek-age. Cost me thirty bucks in total, an a 1 week turn around. Awesome. Service was phenomenal. I feel like I just went home to my Persian mother to get my clothes hemmed. I never felt uncomfortable, which for me is huge. I'm so hot right now. I spend A LOT of money with Uni Tailor. My issue with her is and always have been is that you never know what energy or attitude you will get from her. Wanted to like Uni Tailor but will not be returning. Judging from the reviews here, it's basically hit or miss. I don't think that Ellie herself does the alteration work, I'm positive there is staff back there, so wasn't directly her mistake? In any case, brought in some jeans for my boss and had them taken in. These were new w/ tags $950 designer jeans, and every other tailor I have been to knows to keep or ask if you want to keep the original tags with the clothing. There were 3 large/long hangtags still attached to the jeans. When I picked them up, the tags were gone and nowhere to be found. Ouch. Also realized after the fact that the belt loop at center back was not re-attached after alteration and is in the landfill with the tags somewhere. Wow. He doesn't wear belts, still, was obviously not happy with this outcome. An alteration is what you get, for sure. Additionally had a leather jacket worked on at same time here and the price quoted ended up being almost double at pickup. We didn't have it in writing, so I suppose that's where it gets dicey. The first time I came here, Ellie told me she was too busy and apologized that she could not tailor my bridesmaid dress. I think that speaks to her dedication to excellence. I saw many young ladies picking up prom dresses and kicked myself as I went elsewhere (where the dress was subsequently tailored to be too tight on my hips--boo). I have since made sure to come back with plenty of time to spare for any job, and have *never* been disappointed. As a petite lady, I come in to get pants and dresses hemmed frequently. When I do, I am always greeted with a smile. For special occasions, I would never go anywhere else. She makes sure to let me know how things may turn out differently than I would expect ("If you want removable straps with hooks and eyes, the straps may pop off when you sit"; "If I hem this gown as you request, the pattern may lose its visual impact", etc). I am never disappointed because she does a great job of setting expectations. It's also fun to watch her work--she pins differently than other tailors I have used, and it seems like she should never be able to get an accurate reading on where to cut by using her methods, but everything always ends up fitting like a glove! She is also a very sweet person, and it is clear that she is not just a master at her craft, but someone who cares deeply about making you happy with how your clothes fit. I found this place through Yelp. It's a great little spot that's not too far from home, making another errand slightly less annoying. Four stars for friendly and quick service. I'd give it 5, but I have no idea how their tailoring is. Though, should I get something that needs tailoring I wouldn't hesitate to take it on over. Their prices on their blouses are a bit much (about $9 for 2), but all the other cleaning I had done was definitely reasonable. I'll be bringing back my slacks and jackets for cleaning in the future. They're open six days a week, and most of the days they're open until about 6:30 so you have time make it in just after work. It'd be great if they took credit/debit, but they don't. They do take checks, so if you don't have cash you can always write a check. read more

She needs all of our support after the Covid shut down after which the city closed University Avenue from Shattuck to Milvia for three months because of the fire in the middle of block without regard to the impact on local merchants. Typical of the City's thrall to real estate interests without regard to the impact on its citizens and small businesses. And, of course, they are building housing on the parking lot behind the building without replacing the parking seeming to think that people, especially older people, don't need their cars for errands like taking a pile of clothing to the tailor. Not great for parking, University at Shattuck is one of my most hated intersections to drive thorough in all of East Bay, but the service here is great and I have been helped out in a pinch so I had to give them kudos. Heard about her originally when I bought my wedding dress, which was a sample, so there were some tears in the lace by the arm pit. Mmmmm. They took my dress and fixed her up very quickly. It was a HUGE relief. I find the proprietress very warm and kind. I've since gone back mainly to have the shoulders of blouses a little modified since I have a small bust and many shirts that would look otherwise great have to be slightly altered, which they do reasonably, to accommodate this annoying location I try to combine my trip into the area with other errands. They have a little changing room so you can get your clothing alterations figured out while you're there. Make sure you communicate and are on the same page about the scope of work and you'll be good! read more

Ellie is a wonderful tailor, and even though she lacks a genuine smile (as many reviewers have noted) I keep coming back because she does great work and that is what I look for in my tailor. I am pretty short (5'3" barely) and a size 0, so more often than not I need to get my dress pants hemmed or taken in at the waist (most of the time both). Ellie is very effective. I am in an out of the shop in 10 minutes and when I come back to pick up my pants in 2-3 days (pretty fast in my opinion), the length and waist always fits beautifully. I am always impressed at how she is able to take in so much fabric without making the butt or crotch area look strange or disfigured, and she will re-arrange belt loops so your belt will still fit comfortably. She really knows her materials and appreciates and knows how to treat good clothes, so don't worry about getting pricier stuff tailored here because she knows what is good for what fabric. I have never gotten anything else done except pants and skirts, but I would trust her to do my jackets too. Plus I think her prices are very affordable considering her skills and the competition's prices/time to complete a tailoring job. Both hemming and getting something taken in at the waist cost under $25 each (I can't remember exact prices). My friends Pam S. and Alison S. have both come here based on Yelp reviews, and when they recommended it to me, I decided to come get a coat tailored that was too big for me. I wasn't sure if it was going to be possible, since it was really wide around my waist and the shoulders were a bit wide too. I totally expected Ellie (the owner) to say to me, "Why didn't you just get a smaller size?" It was a clearance sale, that's why...and if she wasn't going to be able to do it, I was planning on just re-selling it. So I go into Uni Tailor with that expectation, and Ellie was very welcoming from the moment I walked in. She asked me to try the coat on, and the first thing she said was, "Very nice coat!!" and that made me smile even though the coat was obviously over a size too big for me. But she immediately started pinning the sleeves and the back up and I was like, "Is it possible to make it smaller?" and she said, "Yes of course!" and showed me exactly what it would look like when it was done. She gave me my receipt and told me to come back in 3 days. I came back, and when she saw me, she said, "You have the blue coat, right?" I was so impressed that she remembered, even though we had only met once. Either she has a really good memory, or my coat caused her a lot of trouble. Anyways, when I saw it, it looked so professionally done that it looked like nothing had changed at all. But when I put it on, it was the perfect proportions, and didn't look too big anymore. What a miracle! Granted, the miracle cost me twice the cost of the coat itself. I got the coat for $25, and the tailoring cost $58, so in the end, I ended up paying almost the same amount as a nice coat that's not on sale. But it was custom-fitted to me, and that makes it worth more to me. Great job, Uni Tailor, and I'll definitely be coming back again if I need more clothes tailored and have the extra spending money to custom-tailor them. Dry cleaning is done here too! You can never go wrong with Yelp! I was looking for a place to do my dry cleaning and hem a pair of jeans. I took them in on Friday and picked them up this afternoon... I brought in red, brown, and black cashmere turtlenecks/sweaters (and yes, I know no one needs that much cashmere) for her to dry clean before the beginning of the winter season. I'm very wary of most dry cleaners since I have had a good many things ruined from improper cleaning. She was very professional and kind. Today I came back and she looked at me and, before even looking at my ticket, said, "You had the brown sweater and purple jeans, right?" "Oh god, I thought. Something's wrong with them. That's the only reason she remembers." But she brought them back out and they looked perfect. The hem on my new purple cords was perfect and the stitching matched in color the rest of the seams. My sweaters all smelled amazing, were the same sizes as when I brought them in, and didn't have any funny holes or stains. And the price was wonderfully reasonable. $4.60 for each sweater and $10 for my jeans. I paid her, she thanked me, and then went back to a wedding dress fitting for another customer. Guess I'm singing an old song, but I brought a brand new Hugo Boss suit here for final alterations -- the sleeves were too short and the pants too long. Ellie determined the right lengths for each, asked when I wanted the suit and sent me on my way. I was a little apprehensive about leaving such an expensive set of clothing with a complete stranger, but when I got it back, wow, did it look great! I spent a full minute going over the sleeves, I couldn't even tell where the original crease was! The pants were hemmed very well and no material was cut away -- they were just hemmed up the interior of the pant leg. This gives some nice weight to the legs of the pants which are flat fronted and I didn't want the casual look of a cuff. She has a small dressing room there that you can change in, so it makes sense to just come in wearing whatever you want altered so you only have to change once. It even has various props, like men's dress shoes that have the backs torn off so you can just slide your feet in to see how pants will look with nice shoes if you came in with street shoes. read more

I strongly beleive in tailoring and more people (men in particular) should take the time (and money) to tailor a shirt so that it fits well. I think people appreciate it when you have a tailored look to yourself. Anywho, the woman is soo sweet and patient. For me to say that is a lot because i am not an easy customer. I am a picky tailoring customer. She takes the time to work on a shirt or coat and still willing to work more because the first time just wasn't exactly what i had pictured. I rated this place a star less than everyone else, which I'll explain. I was stockpiling some pants for a while as I didn't know a good place to get them hemmed. After reading everyone's reviews about this tailor shop, I decided to give it a shot. Ellie was very nice and was patient as I changed in and out of 6 pairs of pants. She quoted me an average of $10 per pair of pants but two pairs were $11 (I think it was due to more complicated hemming). I thought her price was fairly reasonable, and she was able to get them back to me in 4 days, which was great. However when I came in to pick up my pants and pay by credit card, I had a less than pleasant experience. First of all, the shop smelled of cigarette smoke which I hadn't noticed before. Then Ellie's husband informed me that they didn't take credit cards and only accepted checks and cash. That left me feeling a little disgruntled as I had naturally assumed that most places nowadays take credit cards, and wasn't told of their payment policy beforehand (it's not on their receipt or anywhere in their store, as far as I could tell). Having only $25 and with my meter running, I walked up two blocks to the nearest ATM to withdraw enough cash, and unfortunately had to pay the convenience fee as the ATM wasn't from my local bank. The husband was apologetic and seemed nice, so I was willing to forget the situation. I took my 6 pairs of pants home, and I certainly agree with everyone else that Ellie did a wonderful job of hemming my pants. They were the perfect length and looked exactly like how I brought them in, but shorter. Hence the four stars for her awesome tailoring. However, I noticed that my pants were reeking of smoke! I ended up having to launder them all over again because of the smell. Don't get me wrong, I actually used to be a smoker and am quite tolerant of being around others who smoke. However I just don't feel that allowing customer's clothes smell of smoke is good business practice. I unfortunately had to minus a star for their payment policy and the smoke smell on my clothes, which is a real shame as I wanted to give this place 5 stars like everyone else. So what should you know about this place before you check it out? Make sure you: 1) have enough cash or your checkbook when you pick up your clothes, and 2) don't mind the possibility that your clothes might need to be washed or aired out. Hopefully the smell was just a one time thing, as I really don't want to have to wait until I find someone else. I moved out of my dingy studio this summer and was in the midst of packing and unpacking when I realised I had way too unflattering clothes. Some of them went straight into the bin, and some of them I really couldn't bear to throw away. Thanks to a recommendation by the lovely Julie Z I found Ellie. Ellie is a miracle. I've taken countless unwearable items to her and she has made every one of them look fabulous. Recently I brought in a $40 BR trench that was two sizes too big. I wasn't expecting much but in a few weeks, Ellie turned it into an amazingly sexy fitted trench. I wear it all the time and now I love it way more than my Burberry trench. So lesson learned - don't bother spending $1k on a Burberry, just take your trenches to Ellie. Ellie is also amazingly sweet and offers wonderful service. I was the bridesmaid for a friend's wedding and the day before the wedding, I came in for a fitting and realised the dress was a little too long. Although she was so busy, Ellie rushed my hemming work with no extra charge and I made it to the wedding ceremony on time and feeling fabulous. What I love about Ellie is she is also super honest. I bring in a bunch of clothes to her all the time, and she honestly tells me which ones will end up looking good after her tailoring work, and which won't. I love that I can trust her and that she cares about what will look good on me, instead of cheating me into paying for a bad tailoring job. One slight negative I will say about Ellie (which some people might take as a positive) is that she is a bit conservative in style. If I bring in a dress and ask her to take it in, she generally doesn't make it as form fitting as I like. But that's ok, just let her know and ask her to pin it again until you are happy with the result. I can't say enough good things about her. Despite the fact that she was completely swamped with other orders, she took mine in (with some light convincing) and did a flawless job. When I came to pick up my dress, she made sure that I was 100% satisfied with the results. I had a fantastic experience with Ellie at Uni Tailor. She accomodated the mountain of clothing I had amassed that needed alterations, and on a Saturday, to boot. She dealt competently with all of my extra-curvy lady issues, including taking in massively huge waists on garments that otherwise fit my large and round ass (I have eighteen inches difference between my waist and hips). Her prices were abundantly fair for the work that I needed. She is an incredibly sweet, hard-working lady who goes the extra mile to please customers of all stripes. My very favorite thing about Uni Tailor is that appointments are not necessary--that is, you can drop by with your clothing and get your alterations started any time during their business hours--a feature which I have found a bit unusual with tailors in general. There is also public parking at the back of the block, which makes negotiating downtown Berkeley with a heavy garment bag full of clothing much more bearable. Never again. I brought in 3 pairs of pants and a beautiful blazer to get tailored. Her idea of 'tailoring' the waist was to run a quick hem on the seat to tighten it up, no actual tailoring of the waist at all. I can still tuck both my hands into the waistline of the pants. The pants are too long by a 1/4 to 1/2 of an inch and I wore the exact shoes that I was going to wear with the pants. Now I have to get them done again. And the jacket. I specifically asked for the sleeves to be shortened and the shoulderpads removed (I have big shoulders, I REALLY don't need the help in that department). She told me she put in smaller ones and argued with me about it. You can see the lumps! It doesn't work and it looks stupid on me. And the wait - I had to wait 10 days for this? So I can take them somewhere else and pay another $112? Yeah, not. Dis-recommend. read more

They were definitely not skinny, more like straight leg. I felt terrible, but I went to complain. Ellie was like, but I pinned them and you said it was ok. Well yes, but they didn't turn out the way I thought...and so she very nicely allowed me to try them on and pinned them again. Since there was extra material that she pinned, it was obvious that they weren't skinny. I think what went wrong the first time was that she folded the extra length on the inside since I needed them hemmed as well, which may have added to the bulk. The inseams were done very professionally, definitely not something anyone could just do at home (which was what I planned on doing). They didn't match the colors, but I guess that's ok since no one is going to see it. After she fixed the jeans the second time, they looked a LOT better. I went home and tried them on. I was pleased until I noticed that the length of the legs on one of the jeans didn't match! There's a good one inch difference between the legs. That does not make sense...but I didn't go back to complain again. And I never will go back again. read more

This place is reliable, affordable and consistent. I've been coming to Elli's for the last 5 years or so, for collared shirts, pants, bridesmaid dresses, cute summer dresses and winter jackets. Elli is very personable and friendly, and will always make sure that the alteration fits you well. If the first-time didn't work out, she will make secondary changes to make sure you fit in your clothing really well. In dire situations (I once needed a bridesmaid dress done within that week...), she will also make the effort to get your item out in time. I was also told that the work could only be done in time (my wedding was in a month) if I left the dress there by that weekend. I brought the same dress to Uni Eleganza and the quote for the same amount of work was $260, and it was finished a week before the wedding. In the end, I decided that I didn't need the top altered, or the bustle done, and had straps added, and the price went down significantly. The owner is so sweet, and she did a fantastic job. It's the little things- she really really wanted to make sure that I loved the dress and was happy, and she always remembered me. You would never notice that I had the dress altered at all- it just looks made for me. There was even some loose beading that she worked on free of charge. I decided to check out Uni Eleganza because of the Yelp reviews. You Yelpers didn't steer me wrong! I trusted Ellie with my wedding dress which needed a new zipper and she quickly pointed out that the type of zipper that was used on the dress always sticks and would eventually rip the lining. She knew just what to do, so I left my dress in her hands and reappeared a couple of weeks later to collect the dress and she remembered me and also got the dress cleaned and pressed!
