Unico pasta opened up a second location in El Segundo, and it's nice that it's near LAX so anytime we are dropping someone off at the airport, we can go here and have a meal before going to LAX. Uni pasta is the main reason we are trying Unico Tokyo Pasta and also to see how vlose their Uni pasta is to our favorite Japanese pasta in cypress California. My son's and I each ordered a different dish to be able to try out other flavors. Besides the Uni Cream, we also ordered curry Bolognaise and the Mentaiko Pasta. They were all good, however the Uni cream was a little dry, but still had great taste. The Mentaiko and Curry Bolognais were full of flavor. We wanted dessert, but they were out of the strawberry cheesecake so a little disappointed, but it gives us a reason to comeback and try other dishes. Worth coming back and trying other pasta dishes. Japanese inspired Italian comfort food. That's how I describe Unico and I'm sticking with it. This was another DineLA stop for me on this month's Restaurant week. It's located on Main which if you know the area, it's street parking or lots back behind the businesses. I've also parked on the residential cross streets before - and I love that it's free. There are time restrictions so read the signs. On Main, it's two hours free, until 6PM. So, I was golden as I got there just before 5. Walked in, no reservations. I thought I might be in trouble because the outdoor seating was packed. But I guess no one wanted to sit indoors as I had the pick of the place. Well, kinda - party of one so he gave me a choice of the two seaters. Saving the larger tables for larger number parties. Service was excellent. Between the team of three, they worked in unison - attentive, friendly and efficient. At one point, I almost felt like they were keeping an eye out on me because I was like royalty. But don't get me wrong - they're weren't hovering like pests. Service was just great! And the food. The food. I opted for the DineLA menu but of course added more items and drinks too. Off the DineLA menu: Salad | Garlic Bread | Yuzu Peperoncini Added: Koji Cauliflower Soup | Jidori Chicken | 2 Beers The salad and bread were ok. I liked the chicken and soup. Really enjoyed the pasta. Other than the beer and pasta, the meal didn't seem Japanese inspired to me as far as flavors go. But still enjoyed dinner enough that I'd go back even if it's not for DineLA. Other pasta dishes I'd want to try as I really liked the one I ordered. read more

Today my husband, our 7-year-old, and I checked out Unico Tokyo Pasta in El Segundo, and it was honestly such a good experience. Right from the start, the service was on point--the staff was super attentive and everything came out incredibly fast. The vibe inside was great too; it had a nice, lively buzz without feeling packed or claustrophobic, which was a really refreshing change of pace for that area. They had so many options on the menu, including some really unusual Japanese fusion combinations that I can't wait to try next time. It is also surprisingly family-friendly, and our kid absolutely loved the salad and the kids' Alfredo pasta with chicken. Everything tasted great, and when the bill came, the prices felt totally fair for such a good meal. read more

Summary: Great vibes, service, and food. The pasta is also dente and the prices are reasonable. Highly recommend the Spicy Vodka. Our first visit here was on Monday evening. It was not super crowded, but there were a number of tables occupied. Reservations are recommended (just in case), but they have an online waitlist. Our server Jonathan introduced himself and helped us select a wine by letting us sample all three of the reds. We ended up choosing the Raeburn Pinot Noir. We also asked a number of questions about various dishes, which he was very helpful answering, then made our selections. Caprese - Really tasty and well-balanced. The tomatoes and cheese were excellently paired with the light touch of honey being a nice note. Garlic bread - Great textures, but needed a little saltiness. The Caprese worked well on top. Yuzu Pepperoncino - Quite tasty, with excellently textured pasta. The pancetta was a bit fatty and not crispy enough, though (just our opinion). Spicy Vodka - The star of the night. Checked all of the boxes. Great flavor, excellent texture, nice and savory. And a good little kick. Highly recommend a visit to this new location. read more

My favorite Japanese pasta on the west side! Amazing Al dente pasta with great flavor. They've even now included lunch specials. Personal favorite is the chicken shisolico which is their take on pesto. They also do an exceptional uni pasta I highly recommend if that's your jam. Came in for solo dining during the soft opening - food, service, and ambiance were great! This was my first time trying the food and I had a lovely evening. Was in the mood for a red sauce pasta and asked my waitress for recommendations on what would pair well. Staff was very friendly and informed me they make everything in house (aside from the noodles) The Napolitan Pasta was hearty and paired well with the Tabasco (I'd eat half with and half without to experience both!) The Ganache was very rich, chocolatey, and came out warm. The crunchy cereal on top was a great addition - great for someone with a sweet tooth but would recommend sharing! Overall great experience and glad to see they joined the El Segundo neighborhood :) Will be going back to try their specialty pastas - looked/smelled very good! read more

This is there second location, first one in El Segundo. Right on Main Street, free street parking and and an easy walking street. Emily will fully explain the menu and help you make the right choice. Beer and wine available, free refills on soft drinks, good deal. Happy hour Monday to Friday, both drink and food items. Some great choices. Welcome to El Segundo, Unico Tokyo Pasta! We've been to your Redondo Beach location several times over the years, and it's become one of our favorite pasta spots because of its unique Japanese influence. We stopped by today during the first day of the soft opening, and we're happy to say the food is just as delicious as we remembered. Our favorite is the mentaiko cream pasta--it's one of those dishes we always find ourselves craving. We've also tried the garlic salmon pasta and the yuzu pasta, and each one has its own unique flavor profile. It's such a refreshing change from the traditional Italian pasta you'll find elsewhere. And don't forget the house made desserts: a warm chocolate, a cheesecake, and Japanese pudding all served in jars. The restaurant has been beautifully updated, creating a warm, modern space, and the staff was incredibly friendly and welcoming. You can tell they're excited to be part of the El Segundo community. Great place! A fusion of Japanese and Italian Cuisione. Service was great. They're attentive. The Mentaiko pasta was tasty and flavorful! It was yummy. The servers were nice and attentive. We ate outside and the weather was nice. The inside is small and felt a little stuffy so we chose outside. The servings are definitely just enough for one person. The menu is pretty limited to Pasta and just a little bit of other options. Overall would recommend for good pasta. Saw that this spot opened recently and happened to stop by during Dine LA week. We had a reservation and were seated immediately. We got the $25 3-course special, which included a salad, garlic bread, and pasta. For our mains, we ordered the Curry Bolognese and the Mentaiko pastas. Both were solid but we liked the Mentaiko more just wished it included a protein like chicken or shrimp. Nice location and friendly staff but the food didn't stand out to us. read more

The staff were really friendly and gave us some great recommendations and explanations about the menu. We went during their soft opening at dinnertime and were seated right away. The restaurant is super cute with a chill ambiance. The food was amazing! We had the salad, cauliflower soup, shrimp confit, and mentaiko pasta, and everything was absolutely delicious. Everyone was incredibly friendly, including the owner, who stopped by to check on us. First went to the Redondo location and absolutely loved it. They are doing a soft launch in El Segundo and as always great service and delicious food. The owner was also very social with customers and greeting them and just being grateful for their attendance. I am so happy this place is in town and I am very excited to continue being a customer. When Unico Tokyo Pasta opened, I was very curious, as pasta presented through the Japanese kitchen can be very enjoyable if thought through. But their first location in South Redondo Beach/South Torrance was quite far from me so I never ended up going. They recently appeared on yelp when searching for dinner recs close by, but in El Segundo, so off we went. Their second location is in Downtown El Segundo on Main Street, about a block north of Grand. Their servers are very inviting and eager to accommodate the guests. The interior has a homey feel that's pretty basic with a lot of 4-tops - perfectly suitable for having a casual pasta meal. We ordered two salads (their spin on caprese was tasty) garlic toast, the mentaiko pasta and yuzu peperoncino pasta. We enjoyed everything as I hoped. The riffs on Italian - mentaiko for bottarga, yuzu and shiso chiffonade for lemon pepper and basil are the little nudges that are just enough to push the lines enough to make the dishes fun and tasty but still nodding to Italian cuisine. This location offers beer/wine/sake options and is still in "soft opening" mode. We definitely enjoyed our meal and plan on returning soon. read more

Very nice experience. The modern trattoria ambiance is curated with a lot of care - that observation certainly wasn't hurt when I saw some Japanese handymen finishing up some of the outdoor furnishings for the restaurant in an organized and considerate manner. The food is pretty much what I would expect of a modern Japanese take on pasta, and here it's done really quite well. Everything I've had here so far is quite good, with the Yuzu Pepperoncini pasta and being a real highlight; meanwhile the shrimp confit (surprisingly good value for what it is), garlic bread (on the sweeter, fully-cooked side of garlic tastes), lunch-menu mentai shrimp sando (pricey for its size, but has a gorgeous taste profile with fish roe mixed into the remoulade-ish sauce), and even their small Unico salad (simple Caesar-style) were remarkable. The bread used throughout the menu has the texture / mouthfeel of a softer ciabatta; the exterior crust almost looks like a pita's. The staff were attentive and pleasant during the two times I have been here. They have rotating price specials on weekdays from 11am-6pm if you happen to eat here before the evening dining hours. Overall, this place stands proud alongside similar Japanese-style pasta places like the Redondo Beach location and Pasta e Pasta in Cerritos. With all said, I do look forward to giving this place my regular repeat business. Gluten-free noodles is an option for the pastas I believe, for those who need to make this a consideration in their diet. read more

Food poisoning. My cousin and I went there yesterday and their noodles were pre-cooked(saw it walking pass the kitchen on the way to the restroom). Cousin had the Uni shrimp and I had the Curry noodle dish. Noodles were harder than I would have enjoyed. The garlic bread was smothered with olive oil. Never again. read more

I was very excited to try this new japanese-italian fusion restaurant. We got their lunch special which consisted of salad (romaine , panko bread crumbs? and mayo with garlic as dressing ) The garlic bread was sourdough and it had a weird spread that didn't taste like garlic bread at all it was very tangy/sour? Now let's get to the pastas we got 3 to try. Curry bolognese which was the main reason we even went, it had a very light curry flavor honestly could've added more curry flavor to it because as we ate through our pastas the flavor was very bland and just tasted like regular sauce nothing special about it. The other two pastas we got was chicken pesto pasta very dry and again bland in flavor . And the yasai bolognese which was also nothing special . Honestly if you're in the area and want pasta the lunch meal isn't a bad deal since it's 25$ for salad bread and limited pasta options though . The dining experience itself sucks cuz there's no AC and i wouldn't really know where you would find parking if you don't get lucky on the street as we did right in front of the restaurant. read more

Tried out Unico before the grand opening and had a wonderful experience! Ralphie was an incredible server -- very attentive and also super funny which elevated our experience. Christian was also great and very helpful. The food was exceptional - we had the curry Bolognese and the yuzu pasta. Attending a soft opening is always a gamble. You're essentially volunteering to be a guinea pig while a kitchen finds its rhythm and the front-of-house works out the kinks.
