We came here for dinner and enjoyed the service and environment. We ordered in sharing fashion so we could sample more than less. Our sushi selections consisted of the Shrimp Tempura Roll and Smoked Salmon Nigiri which was pretty fresh. We also got the Truffle Ahí Tuna and the Miso salmon. Union Sushi is tolerable only when it comes to happy hour. For happy hour, I went with the shrimp tempura roll and $1 oysters which were topped with onions, ginger, and spices. For about $15, you can have a full meal of non-traditional Japanese cuisine. For my birthday meal, we went with the four course prix-fixe meal. I had the berkshire pork cutler slider, beef filet skewer, mushroom salad, and negi hamachi roll. It was a light meal of four small plates of hors d'oeuvres at $30 per person. The berkshire pork cutler came with a dry slab of meat in between two buns that were hard as stone. The beef filet skewer resembled ground beef meshed together onto a skewer that fell apart upon one bite. The mushroom salad was tolerable compared to the soup which resembled mushrooms floating in a bowl of soy sauce. The negi hamachi roll was barely satisfying as it only came in four pieces. We scuffled through them so we could immediately move onto our next destination for a full meal. My two stars are more than generous. Will I return? Maybe just for happy hour. read more

I walk past this spot everyday on my way to work and had been meaning to check it out. I ended up going around 8:00 on a Saturday night. We didn't have reservations but they were able to seat us at the bar upstairs. Such a cute date spot or I can see getting together with friends too. My date had already been, but I hadn't and we ordered various items from the menu. One of my favs was the truffled tuna. I love anything with truffle! We also ordered the seared Wagyu beef and the Wagyu beef sliders. Both were good, but I thought the chips that came with the sliders was a bit much and I didn't enjoy the pineapple on the slider either. I'm not a fan of mixing sweet with savory. One of my favorite dishes would have to be the king crab legs. So much flavor!!! Last, but definitely not least we had the sushi! I thought it was decent. Probably not better than other sushi spots I've been, but right up there with them. As for the cocktails I had the daiquiri which was good and then switched it up with a mule. We needed a last minute reservation for 30 people for a work happy hour on a Tuesday night. Originally I emailed and inquired about The Franklin Room, but since we didn't want to do a sit down dinner and given our party size, they recommended the upstairs space of this place instead. Turned out to be a great option! Making the res was super easy, responses were quick over email, and no minimum or deposit required. They even texted the day before to confirm, which was reassuring. The restaurant was cool looking though the upstairs space was little tight for 30. They have a bar upstairs, but they kept going down to make the drinks which was a little odd. We got sushi delivered and are sooo disappointed! It's NOT fresh and there's no flavor. Let's start with the crispy rice spicy tuna. It was barely crispy and the tuna was not the slightest bit spicy. Seemed like plain tuna, nothing mixed in. The pacific coast had ZERO flavor. It tasted very fishy too. Then the Hamachi wasabi. Best part was the tiny bit of sauce on it, otherwise very bland. Lastly, the truffled snake. There was NO honey and NO white peach balsamic. We spent just under $100 for 4 rolls that we threw away. What a waste! I wouldn't recommend going here. I'd ordered in from here once a few years ago and enjoyed it, but I wanted to check it out again. I went with a friend for happy hour, which was until 6:30pm, merciful in both timing and selection. (Too often, you only save money if you can get there before 5:30 or something ridiculous...and there are like 4 options on the menu.) My friend and I got here before 6:30, about 6:15, and thankfully, we got our orders in on time! My friend enjoyed her sushi; she thought the ingredients worked well together and seemed fresh. I got the inventive truffle tuna tartare. The truffle taste was unique but not overpowering. If I had to nitpick, it was perhaps too cold, evident in terms of the texture. I still enjoyed it though, and I'd get it again. The flavors were excellent! The drink specials were limited but well selected. It was cool that they featured $5 glasses of wine, including one of sparkling rose...it was good, bright and fizzy. No bottom-of-the-bottle stuff here, even for happy hour. Our waitress was nice enough but a bit spacey and physically absent most of the time. It's nice to see that this restaurant has stuck around for a decent amount of time. Union Sushi is great! Service is excellent, food is delicious, ambiance is very hip. Not like a traditional japanese restaurant-- very modern, exciting, good for friday nights. Our server, Gift, was so kind and made the dining experience very personable. She made sure to check on our table and was very attentive towards our needs! I ordered the vegan roll-- shiitake, tempura enoki, and sweet potato (subbed in for the avocado). Seriously this roll was phenomenal. The tempura enoki was very unique and delicious. At 10 pieces per roll, I think the $12 price tag is justifiable for the portion. Other non-vegan dishes are very pricey, but I know fish gets expensive so I understand. On arrival we were seated promptly in a corner booth. They have an upstairs area that gets booked up quickly, I hope next time I visit I can experience it! We came here on a Friday for dinner and the restaurant was packed. Good thing we made a reservation. We still had to wait about 10 minutes to be seated, but we didn't mind. Our waitress did a great job despite how busy she was. We ordered the sliders as an appetizer. The chips that came with the sliders were very soggy. The sliders were unique and tasted pretty good, but none of them stood out to me. For dinner, we had the Spicy Pigtail Ramen and Short Rib Ramen. I did not enjoy either one of them. I enjoyed the sashimi, and a King crab special appetizer. The skewers from the robot grill didn't really impress. Despite the elaborate menu descriptions of sauce, they were all fairly bland. The ice cream trio for dessert was the highlight of my meal. The espresso was a real standout. There are some excellent cocktails, particularly if you enjoy bitter and complex flavors. We've been here at least 4 times over the last year. Every time we're here everything we try is great. Happy hour - We always catch the last 30 minutes of this. We get the $5 mules which are exactly what you'd expect them to be, sweet and tart. For food we get the happy hour beef skewers and oysters. The beef is cooked to order and super tender. Most of the time it had a nice char to it. The $1 oysters are my favorite. They're fresh and never sandy. We've tried many of the rolls and other items here which are all good but my all time favorite is the king crab legs. They are pricey but are absolutely AMAZING. Considering that Momotaro is my favorite, I wanted something similar where they weren't known for just their rolls. I dropped in an hour before closing and sat at the sushi bar by myself. I was pleasantly surprised to find that they offered Japanese whiskey flights so I ordered one to go with my meal. I really enjoyed the oysters (east coast) - tasted fresh, sweet, and delicious. The King crab legs were awesome and I consider them the highlight of my meal. I've never had beef tongue served in chunks rather than thinly sliced so I thought it was different. I prefer it thinly sliced. I order some sushi and sashimi, served 2 piece per order. I ordered salmon nigiri, uni nigiri, sweet shrimp sushi w/fried heads, salmon sashimi, and fluke sashimi. Every piece was very fresh, except the fluke which tasted fishy and very chewy rather than crunchy. Service was great, constantly had servers removing finished plates. My only complaint was the intervals between courses. I ordered the oysters at least five mins before the rest of my meal. The oysters were served exactly five minutes before the rest of the meal...and the rest (from robata to sushi) which all literally served 3 minutes apart. When dining solo, this causes most of my food to get cold when it should be hot. I would definitely come back to dine but know that I will need to pace my orders as this is not their method of service. read more

Really good, unique, friendly spot in river north. There is nothing "traditional" about this menu. You have to get the black rice on each sushi roll. It truly brings out the flavor. The spicy tuna is classic and always my favorite. The old city market and the pacific coast are my favorite speciality rolls. My most recent visit we splurged a little and also got the beef sampler, a kangaroo skewers (so wild, but yummy), and the mochi cake for dessert!! I would definitely recommend all of the above. The reason I gave Union a 4/5 instead of a 5/5 stars is because it isn't the best sushi in the area, and the food items on the happy hour could be better. The restaurant itself is gorgeous, and spacious, and we were seated right away. We ordered 2 rounds of moscow mules each and the $1 oysters, which were so flavorful (one of the best oysters I've ever had). Next, we had the bay street california, spicy shrimp, devon and shrimp tempura rolls. All of them were great, however my favorite was the shrimp tempura roll. Went in with a group. Upon coming in the staff was very nice and accommodating for our large group. They asked if we were celebrating anything and we were there for my birthday but didn't do anything in regards to it.. Had eaten here before the new reopening and it was delicious. However on this day they were out of crab which was a part of quite a few rolls on the menu which wasn't mentioned when we sat down thus we didn't have as many options for dinner - and the rolls with crab were literally the rolls everyone wanted. Also there is NO happy hour which was originally the main reason we came as they had good deals before. I had confirmed on the phone that they did have happy hour happening on the weekend, but no one mentioned that it was just to earn points not for drink/eats deals so that was misleading and very disappointing. Also it turned hostile as they accused us of bringing our own alcohol and instead of the waitress asking us if we did, the manager came over to accuse us. My friend had just brought a Mio (non alcoholic flavoring) to put in her water and vodka soda as she is gluten free and diabetic and it's difficult for her to manage her sugar intake with most cocktails. I guess we should have asked if that was an issue but it hasn't ever been one for her before so she didn't think to. For transparency, my other friend did have a flask but it was actually a Delta8 tonic drink as she doesn't drink alcohol so I do apologize for that - but everyone else was buying multiple drinks per person though. Our total bill was around $500. After all of this they also included a 20% gratuity since it was a large party and we could not adjust and the service was not appropriate for a 20% tip. The Truffled Tuna is a MUST. Perfect balance between the avocado, truffle oil and tuna, with neither flavors overpowering the other. Served with house wonton chips, it was pretty much the star of the night for me! Tuna was also very fresh (which is most important). The Oysters on the Half Shell ranked second. Happy Hour has 1/2 off Mules and there are 4 different types! We had the cauliflower, chicken and bacon from the barbecue and split various rolls and got them rolled in the black rice. We finished off with the trip of gelato and it tasted and briefly felt like I was back in Italy. Such fresh and rich flavors without the overly dairy taste. The hostess Karla was also AMAZING. She walked us over to our table and explained some of her favorites, for a feel for some of ours and made stellar recommendations. Such an awesome happy hour!!!! You get to choose from 4 varieties of mules. If you're up for it, I'd get all four (although the tequila one is strooong). Their $1 oysters are hands down the BEST $1 oysters I've ever had. It's no naked oysters, they dress them up in scallion, fried garlic, and sauce. We tried to happy hour hop but regretted it the second we went to the second place. Union should be the top happy hour for everyone in the neighborhood. These oysters don't lie!
