Although many of the recent Yelp reviews for Union have been favorable, my guess is that the reviewers don't know how good this place USED to be. Apparently the new owners have a different vision for the restaurant, but in my opinion they are fixing a problem that wasn't broken. We dined here yesterday after a long hiatus, and the first thing we noticed was that the urban art that used to be on the walls has been replaced with plain white paint. The hip hop that once played throughout the restaurant has been replaced with elevator music. The menu has been toned down, and the prices have went way up. We chatted with the bartender and he told us that the new owners were going for a more "upscale/traditional" ambiance (as if we don't have enough of those places in Chicago already). The aforementioned things were what made Union unique. Now it's just a regular sushi restaurant with bland food and an underwhelming vibe. I was excited to try this place after passing it several times and had a good experience overall. The outdoor seating is nice, except for the noise of the El right above. We started with the lychee martinis, which were strong and delicious. I loved the two fresh lychees, although they were not as sweet and ripe as I would have liked. The highlight of the black sushi sampler was definitely the scallop sushi. It was beautiful and delicious. It also included some of the best sweet potato tempura sushi I've had. The tuna sushi was good, but could have used some crunch or another element. We also got the BBQ chicken. I was surprised to find that it was very reminiscent of an Indian curry, rather than the Japanese BBQ I was expecting. It was good, although maybe not the first thing I would order again. The Hokkaido roll was by far my favorite on the sampler--scallop, avocado, jalapeño wrapped in soy paper. The Devon is made with sweet potato and had great flavor and a surprising crunch to it. I've not had black rice sushi before--don't let that scare you off because it's delicious! Don't skip dessert! The Chocolate Crunch Mousse was so light and fluffy. A large group of us came here for dinner before a night out. It was really good and they offered a lot of specials! We just so happened to come during happy hour which had great food and drink deals. We initially thought this place was similar to korean bbq but found that they just had a list of meat you can get grilled by the chef's at the bbq bar. We've been going to Union since it opened, and although we always enjoyed our visits we felt the food and service were slipping over the last few years. Well, not anymore. There is a tremendous recommitment to service and innovation. In part, this is thanks to the recent addition of executive chef Sushi Mike. He sent over a complimentary dish he calls "fish and chips." It was amazing!! This dish should NOT be missed. My friend and I came here for a late dinner, and despite it being a weekday and late, the place was decently crowded. We had about 20 minutes before the kitchen closed, so we hurriedly ordered. Our server was attentive and nice throughout our meal. Old city market roll (4/5): This roll didn't have rice in it?! Maybe I should be glad that a bigger proportion of the roll was fish, but I still missed the familiarity of rice in a roll ready to absorb soy sauce and tying everything together. Saba nigiri (5/5): mackerel is my favorite fish in nigiri, so I usually order it when I'm at a sushi restaurant, and it didn't disappoint! Duck yaki soba (3/5): This was soup-less noodles and was described as having tonkatsu sauce in it, but I found it quite dry. It had decent flavor and a nice spicy kick to it, but there were pieces of pepper in it where the skin of the pepper felt really tough and almost inedible. I was very disappointed in my experience here. When I got to the restaurant, it was empty. 2-3 tables taken. I was told there was no tables available except for outside or at the bar. I sat outside a bit. It was cold. I had a nice server that talked to the host about giving me a table inside. I wish I would've remembered the server's name! The food.. it was ok. The pork ribs were good; tender meat and great crunch. I ordered the spicy tuna... nothing about it was spicy. It seemed that the ingredients listed on the menu were missing. Except the tuna! I've passed this place quite a few times so the other day when my friends and I wanted sushi I was excited to finally try it! Starting from the minute you walk in, you know it's a hidden gem. Cute ambience - great for both a night out with friends or a date (request upstairs for darker, more private dining). We went during happy hour and got half a dozen oysters (for $1.50 each), the truffled tuna and the beef skewers. Additionally, we got all got a glass of rosé. I'd definitely say that if you're looking for a way to keep the budget down this is a pro tip to go during happy hour! Our server, I didn't catch her name, was very accomodating and helpful in explaining the happy hour deals and what the particular choices were. The happy hour deals were actual quite good: $3 beef tip skewers and $5 Moscow mules and rosés? Amazing! And the complimentary bowl of edamame covered in cheddar was yummy as well. We got the $25 black rice sushi sampler, which came with 4 pieces of four of their signature rolls in black rice. They were simply delicious. After a long travel day we were craving sushi so we threw in a quick google search and found Union - open and relatively close to our hotel. With 30 minutes notice we were able to get a reservation at the sushi counter and decided to give it a go. In short: HOLY CRAP this place was good!! First of all, the atmosphere was amazing - the servers were laughing, the managers were dancing around, and everyone was friendly and upbeat - it was impossible not to have a good time here. The meal though, was the highlight of the night. We ordered the spicy tuna crispy rice, two miso soups, a Black Rice Godzilla roll, a Truffled Sake roll, a Spicy Mango Maguro roll, and finished the meal off with a warm cookie skillet. The sticker on the paper bag wasn't placed properly, I wouldn't even know if the food was tempered with. Food - the rolls are super small, and average tasting at best. Rice didn't taste fresh, the ingredients inside all 3 rolls were bland. The only one I thought was okay was the Bay Street California, which had crab cake inside. Overall over-priced, and not worth it. Seaweed salad - you really can't mess this one up, but the one I got severely lacked seasoning/rice vinegar, and was dry. Luckily I had some at home, and I had to put in quite a bit. I've dined once before and wasn't impressed either, but thought I'd give it another try during quarantine. Came to Union Sushi + Barbeque Bar on a Friday night. As soon as you walk, the interior is great and you can tell the atmosphere just has a great vibe. Not to loud but just perfect to the point where you can just feel that people are having a great time. Made a reservation for Open Table. The hostess was being a bit odd. She was telling us that the sushi bar area is for reservations only. I'm looking at her like "uhhh I have a reservation" and I think another manager/hostess saw me give that look and she immediately put us at the sushi bar. Originally was supposed to be the bar area but I guess they were packed. They left me really uneasy so minus 1 star for the service. Now off to the food and drinks. They give you complimentary edamame. That was nice. Edamame is edamame right? Can't really go wrong with it. For drinks I decided to get the Union Old Fashion. I don't believe it's on their menu online so I'm assuming it's a newly added drink. But the Old Fashion was a solid 3.5 - 4 stars out of 5. No complaint's here on the drink. Smooth goes down like water. Can't complain. Decided to try their beef filet on the BBQ bar menu. The filet was DELICIOUS. Meat was very tender juicy and melted in your mouth. The only problem was that it was $7.50 for a skewer of meat. 4 out of 5 stars overall. 5 out of 5 for the taste, 3 out of 5 for the value. We decided to get 4 different half rolls as we wanted to try out different things. Listen I'm not a sushi expert as you can see by me wanting the Shrimp Tempura. But that was by far my favorite roll. Super tasty. 4.5 out of 5 stars on the Shrimp Tempura. Next roll we got was the Bristol Bay. I had some lofty expectations for this one but they unfortunately were not met. Just wasn't as tasty and mouth savoring as the Shrimp Tempura. I would give this 3 out of 5 stars. Next roll we tried was the Clifton #4. This was surprisingly good. Couldn't taste to much of the calamari wish I did but still solid. I'll give this 4 out of 5 stars. Final roll was the Hokkaido. Solid roll here. No complaints, 4 out of 5 stars. After basically consuming two rolls for 2 people, had to get 1 more full roll. Just left hungry Hahaha. Overall I give the food here 4 out of 5 stars. Service was great. Our waitress was extremely busy but did her best to put a smile and welcome us with open arms. I admire her effort for trying her best. I think because our waitress was so busy, she mistakenly put a Moscow Mule on our tab that we never ordered. That's a big no no. I wasn't mad but most people I feel like would not look at the bill in detail twice and would've ended up being charged extra for it. And because of that I would have to give the service 3.5 stars out of 5. All in all, service was great. Food was solid. The hostess didn't know I had a reservation and the incorrect drink added to the bill were the only negatives of the night. They have good deals for drinks when it comes to happy hour and the food specials are so much cheaper too. The spicy shrimp rolls are delicious and half the price you would get them for during happy hour. The truffled tuna was honestly...just okay, kind of overhyped. It lacked flavor to me and there's way too much hype about truffle oil in general and how it's used to jack up stuff or make a dish seem better than it actually is in my opinion. Wouldn't get this again. The oysters- I really enjoyed the toppings they put on them. But they are tiny. Like really tiny. And it's difficult to discern the freshness of them with all the stuff on them. Aaand for $1.50/oyster, I still find that rather expensive for the actual size of the oyster you are paying for. I thought it might be too floral with the rose and lavender but it was a perfect blend and had to have two. I tried the spicey tuna with black rice. I need to find black rice. It was nutty and chewy. Also tried Pacific Coast roll which had an amazing sauce. The had the bay scallops and pork belly. Both just melted in your mouth. FARE They have got unique and adventurous ramen selection. While our table set it a goal for each person to order different bowl of ramen, the server decided to step in and steer us to the right direction of choosing spicy pigtail or seafood ramen instead of the beef cheek as they are the most popular bowls in house. Thanks for looking out for us! Just a heads up, the uni alfredo soba is much smaller than the rest of the ramen bowls. The uni and suck sobas are dry while the other ramen counterparts are soup based. Union surely has you covered with the full Japanese cuisine experience. Food was delicious, we liked everything we ordered from small plates/bbq to sushi. Truffled sake was the best roll we had there followed by the pacific coast. The ambiance on a typical weekday wasn't too loud, wasn't too quiet, just right. The rating for this place would be a lot better, however our server was unprofessional. Annie introduced herself, everything was great until she introduced us to the chef's specials, spitting out everything as fast as she could remember off the top of her head, it was too fast for us to comprehend. Right when we got our tab, we handed her the card and she pulled out her device to charge the card, she handed us the device back to leave a tip. We like to round our tip and customize it however we like. As she's standing there, eyeing us, watching over what we click for tip, she saw us get to the custom tip button, enter in our tip and said, "No there's a premade tip button already, just go back and click one of those options." As a former server myself, that's just very inconsiderate and rude to be standing over someone observing then demanding and telling them how much they should tip... By all means, if Annie wants to decide on the tip, go ahead and pay the tab... Be grateful that you got a tip, better than us not leaving you one. The decor is spunky and funky, which makes this spot a casual and fun place to get a good meal with friends. The menu is huge, so you will be very indecisive about what to get. It features sushi, apps, ramen, barbecue and other Asian favorites. The drink menu is standard with beers, wines, etc. It also has some Asian drinks options, which are fun to try. Once seated, the table gets complimentary edamame, which is a huge plus because everyone is always a fan of that. For apps, we decided on the tartare, the mushroom dumplings, and the peppered shrimp. They were all delicious and the tartare had a kick to it with the wasabi mixed in. The peppered shrimp definitely had the best taste out of the three, being slightly spicy. For entrees, most of us decided on the sushi. One cool thing about their sushi is that they offer black rice, which is supposed to have less carbs and sodium. It was a great option to have and interesting to try. Their sushi also comes in great size options, so you can do 4 or 8, and get to try more types then. The menu is pretty customizable. I tried the Hokkaido (scallop, avocado, jalapeño, masago-mayo) and the Clifton (fried calamari, garlic mayo, grilled asparagus), which were both delicious. I like this place a lot. It's so easy to make reservation on a Saturday night through Open Table. I was stuck in traffic and had to reschedule my dinner time twice, and also called the restaurant the third time to let them know that I'm 15 minutes late, and they were really accommodating and say they will keep the table for me. So that alone already made me feel less stressed compared to many other restaurants. The place is quite spacious, and looks very hip/cool with the decor. I like the modern design very much. We came around 6 PM, which is still considered their happy hour. It's 5-6:30 PM every day I believe, including weekends! How rare is that? We got oysters, sushi, skewers, sake, truffle tuna, and rose. For the happy hour items, I would only recommend the oysters and the drinks. I don't think the other items are that great. To be honest, the sushi here is just mediocre. I didn't feel impressed with any of the sushi I ordered. However, the other dishes were really amazing. I got the buffalo duck wing, alligator rib, quail with black rice, and king crab legs, and was so happy with all of those 5. I will definitely come back to eat those!!! Highly recommend those to you all to try. The combination of everything in those dishes is just perfect. I wouldn't change much on any of them. Update: I used to really enjoy going to Union with my girlfriend. I won't be going back. I tried to place a carryout order (for the first time) over the phone and the girl I spoke with let me know that they only take carryout orders via GrubHub. I tried explaining to her that I've been a loyal customer and would very much appreciate her taking my order. She wasn't having it. In the time it would have taken her to let me order my 2 rolls she chose to explain the policy and lose a loyal customer. Way to go, Union. For some reason, my friend and I struggled to find a decent Saturday happy hour in downtown Chicago. They are rare, and tend to end early (i.e. 4-6 PM). Thankfully, Union Sushi pulled through with their $1 oysters (from 5-6:30 PM). We literally sprinted across several blocks to make it in time, and they let us get away with it. As someone who never runs anymore, those oysters were definitely worth the cardio. Not only were the oysters themselves fat and delicious, they were also topped with masago, jalapeno juice, green onion, and onion crisps. Add a generous squeeze of fresh lemon, and you have yourself a glorious moment of bliss. We were seated at the bar, and it was quite calming to watch the sushi chefs work their magic. They slice the avocados so thinly, it's a work of art. While watching the chefs, we also fully enjoyed the rest of the food we ordered: crispy salmon skin roll, hamachi collarbone, beef tongue, and desserts. Oysters (Red tobiko, green onion, crispy shallot, jalapeno-cilantro ponzu)- I could eat these all day! Beef Filet Skewer- The beef was tender and melted in my mouth. Black Rice Sushi Sampler- Black is the new brown. Rice that is. It has fewer carbs and calories. The sampler came with four different half rolls: Dragon- Spicy shrimp, eel, avocado, masago, green onion, eel sauce Devon- Sweet potato, curry mayo, chive, pickled radish, eel sauce Spicy Tuna- Spicy chili oil, masago, tempura flake, mayo Hokkaido- Grilled scallop, avocado, masago-mayo, roasted pepper, jalapeno, garlic, wrapped in soy paper My favorite was the Hokkaido. You can come here for all sorts of reasons. I come here when I am hungry. You should definitely come hungry because the food is so addictive and awesome. I have had a few of the salads including the teriyaki mushroom salad which is mouth wateringly good...not sure if that is a actual word but it is for me. The food is at pretty good prices considering the area. River North is the like the Soho of Chicago when it comes to food choices. Such a cool trendy sushi spot! Lots of space too because of the upstairs area. Quite crowded on a Thursday night and this was even after happy hour time. I had the old city market roll- really interesting and not your traditional sushi roll at all. The flavor and texture was still very fresh though because of the fat portions of fish. Nothing too exotic or saucy which is just the way I like my sushi. A glass of sapporo was a refreshing accompaniment. I really liked how the menu allows you to order half rolls as well.
