Almost. I asked one of your staff if I should leave while we were in the ladies room, not the younger one, who was extremely professional....rather the one in the taupe-colored sweater. She seemed to be higher up in the pecking order. I was lingering a bit after closing time chatting with staff when someone said the police were outside, which alarmed me, which is why I stayed longer. (FYI: 20% of American women will raped in their lifetimes according to the DOJ. I am one of the women who already has been. I like many, many women was retraumatized by the police when I attempted to report my rape. Thus, the police scare me and based on what you'll read below, a heads up that they were still outside would have been much appreciated.) A "yes" to my question as to if I should leave would have negated any possible call you made again to the police, over concern with my continued presence...and every time you call them unnecessarily, you lose credence with them. I saw the canine unit with them...the canine unit when a simple "yes" in the ladies room would have negated such a call...The canine unit. Did you think I was so scary that you needed a dog to chase me away? You're staff didn't do horribly, but you're still pretty far from the ease of assessing customers and sending home low-hanging fruit like myself in a seamless manner, if that was what you were attempting to do. The dog was very friendly and cute. I'm a bit sad that he was overworked tonight because of scary old me. And yes, I know the police were on site, but about 45 min earlier. I was told they had left. Additionally two more cop cars showed up while I was waiting for my ride, so it's not so outlandish to think you called them because of me. Anyhow, try to assess people more accurately. As I said, every call to the police that brings them out to what is NOT a situation in need of their assistance, lowers your credence with them. Eventually you'll be seen as the "boy who cried wolf" if you call them unnecessarily, which you may done tonight, because all 5'2" and 120 pounds of me, not behaving aggressively, but rather chatting and being offered vape hits from other staff may have somehow seemed alarming. ‍ read more

I went to Union Jacks in Columbia a few Saturdays ago. Why? Because it was there. (I was meeting someone and felt like driving 30 miles out of my way). Having been to the UJ in Gaithersburg my expectations were pretty low. The Columbia UJ was nicer, not as loud. But (yes, like a Kardashian, there is a butt) ...... Don't go here. At least not after next week. Why you ask? I had the BEST SERVICE I had ever had at this UJ. Ginger was amazing. Honestly, a truly outstanding server. So why shouldn't you go there? Because the Manager, Angela, is AWFUL. I mean, just really not good at her job, has no concept of customer service or employee relations and seemingly is doing her best to run off good staff; including Ginger who has quit. How do I know this? Long story, but the short of it is this: After dinner I commented to Ginger that my company was giving out a hospitality award and that she was the best server I have had in over a year; using the benchmark of eating in over 300 restaurants in the past year and noted only 8 servers that were better than good. After complimenting Ginger for her outstanding service I asked for the manager so that I tell the manager how wonderful Ginger was. When the manager arrived, smelling like she had been bathing in dirty ash trays, I told her how wonderful Ginger was. I also shared a situation with the KITCHEN which Ginger handled perfectly. What did the manager do? As I was praising Ginger, the manager threw her under the bus, blamed Ginger for the Kitchen screw up (and unless a server working only their second day is also in charge of the Kitchen staff, the kitchen manager and the executive chef, it was NOT Ginger's fault. Any manger that would lay blame at the foot of an associate who is receiving great praise is nothing short of a moron on. Seriously. When I left I gave Ginger my business card, as I am want to do when I out. Since my company helps people with many aspects of personal growth and job search (communication, sales, public speaking training, resume writing, etc) I invited Ginger to contact me if she ever wanted help. She called and let me know that she has left UJ. UJ, has ok priced food, ok tasting food and NO CONCEPT of customer service or associate engagement, but with this GM in charge I can only imagine how much the service will suffer (as I observed it wasn't anything special outside of Ginger). I did send notes to the GM and owners and never heard back. Sorry, I just can't endorse a place that shows so little value in customer service and employee relations. I am giving it 2 stars because he food is good enough at a 3.5 to offset a .5 in the Non-Ginger related service and a -10 for management. I've been living in Columbia for a while, but only recently have started hanging out here. The staff are all wonderful and even during a pandemic, they're one of the very few places with consistent live music and excellent outdoor seating. I really appreciate this. Makes life feel a little lighter somehow with the patio open. The drinks are strong! Beer is always cold and good. I like bringing my dog and sitting outside. I'm pretty happy to know they have a beyond burger too. The manager came by and asked me if I wanted to exchange the brioche for a wrap because it wasn't vegan and I so appreciated this! I'm not one to complain and they just were overtly accommodating which is unusual in today's restaurant world. They gave me a wrap with stuffed avocado and WOW was it good. Like a chalupa but better. Not a place to watch sports. An email from Union Jack's advertised the Capitals Stanley Cup Finals with "All TV's and full audio" We arrived to find the big screen and only two small ones (behind the bar) showing the game. That was okay but they also had music playing and it was hard to hear the game until about 20 minutes into it when they finally turned the music off. We should've noticed something was amiss when it took 25 minutes to get our first beers and then saw our server at only about 20 minute intervals. Also, our appetizer took 30 minutes but to be fair, they took that off the bill. After being at Union Jack's about an hour and a half, we noticed there was only one server for the entire place!! We felt bad for her but also wish the server would've been honest, informed us of this and let us know service was going to be slow. Also, it would be nice if Union Jack's had drink specials (like they do for NFL games) but I guess the Stanley Cup Playoffs do not rate. Given all the above, we'll go elsewhere to eat & drink while watching sports and to reserve going to Union Jack's for their wonderful Fish n Chips. read more

I was here for a birthday dinner while visiting a friend, and as a fan of English pubs in general, I have to say it's one of the better ones this side of the Pond - at least food and beer wise. I called to make a reservation a few hours before our dinner, and they were not accepting reservations or call ahead since it wasn't busy. This makes no sense to me - and the person that answered the phone seemed a little clueless. I get there's no wait at 5pm, but we wanted to come with 15 people at 9....ok whatever. We got there and waited over an hour - but were able to find a few seats at the bar to down a few beers. The beer selection isn't bad though they were out of several that I had wanted to try. The decor in the restaurant is cute - there are English guards and an English phone booth, which was cute. There were several soccer games on around the place, and the bar stretched around the whole room. Once seated, our server was fantastic. He was prompt, not overbearing, and got everything right. We ordered some nachos, as it was now 1030 and we hadn't eaten in like 8 hours. The nachos were good - a large portion that even 6 of us didn't finish. Typical tortilla chips with typical seasonings, though the chips and hot toppings were warm, and the cold topping were cold, which is always nice. As a rule, in an English/Irish pub, I always get fish and chips for the first meal. There was a heaping portion of both, and I couldn't finish it. The batter tasted different, but good different. Maybe it's a spice, or a beer batter, but either way, it was delicious. The fries were hot and crispy, and even the sides were good. We stayed till around 1am, and there was a DJ playing music, so it was sort of loud, and we ended up shouting at each other all night. Our server was awesome about us taking up a large table for so long, and even brought us birthday shots - on him. The next time I'm in Columbia I'll definitely be asking to go back to Union Jack's. read more

First, the customer service is awesome! Everyone knows what they are doing, are friendly, and actually enjoy their job. The food has a variety of bar food and classy things such as fish tacos and the classic crab cakes. Drinks were full bar, and the TV's by the bar even recommended drinks to ask the bartender for. They have tables and stools and a bar area, so plenty of room for whatever your party needs. Also, it gets packed on weekends and they have plenty of events to attend with specials. Came here on a Friday night to get a drink, didn't expect this place to be so much fun! They do card on Fridays (I'm assuming Saturday night too) so leave the under 21s at home. There was a really awesome band playing the whole time we were there, was a little surprised at how good they were. Didn't catch the band's name-the lead singer had a mean falsetto though and they played alot of old school goodies including MJ. Can't go wrong with some MJ. Drink prices were average. Someone else was buyin but I think my Sam summer was $6. We were there at 11 and they were still serving food...quite a few people were eating nachos, will definitely have to try them sometime cuz they looked good! Two pool tables and two dartboards in the back. Both were available at different times throughout the night so I wouldn't worry about waiting if you do wanna play. I played darts for the first time in my life-I sucked but had a great time! Sat outside on a Saturday night. There was a live band, everything was social distanced well, and everyone working had masks on properly. I was glad to see that they still had their whole normal menu to serve. I love their chicken tenders! So I have no comment on the food as I never got a server. I am a server and I understand that everyone is understaffed and it takes time. I was in no rush but whatever. Several servers walked right passed me and just ignored me and when the 8 top next to me got a server with no wait I realized what was going on. Since I was alone they figured I wouldn't tip them well. Being a server myself I always tip well so they missed out on that. So that's 30 minutes of my time wasted. Most people would leave after ten minutes but I was giving the benefit of the doubt. We usually come here for a late lunch on a weekend, when there isn't much of a crowd. Service is usually fine, and the food is pretty good. Sometimes the kitchen can be slow, but it's usually worth the wait. We're fond of the cottage pie, bangers and mash, fish & chips, burgers, and salads. They usually have some interesting drinks available at the bar as well. One area for improvement though, is the restrooms. It's not bad, but I don't know if I'd go out of my way for it. The first time we went was during an England World Cup game. The place was packed and it took them forever to get us anything and when it did arrive, it was mediocre at best. We decided to give it another try this weekend so we could watch an out-of-market NFL game. It was significantly quieter. The service was good, the waitress came around periodically, but not enough that it was annoying during the game. The burgers were solid. What an awesome spot in the center of Columbia. A good selection of beers from Europe and the food was very good. We were here on a busy Saturday night with most tables full and the service was still awesome. That's not the experience some of the Yelpers who review this place had so I guess this can be hit-or-miss. But, luckily for us, it was a hit! This restaurant has an outdoor patio and several rooms inside of a large space. By the bathrooms is another room which looks like it can be used for private parties. We started with crab bites which were tasty and got our motors running. I followed up with a London Broil which was superb. They nailed it! I also had a taste of my friend's One-eyed jack and that was quite good as well. We finished off that meal sharing a bread pudding which was again, tasty. The only thing we tried and were not crazy about was a glass of Red Sangria. It was too sweet, like you could almost chew the sugar. The service was fast and friendly. A great experience overall. Very cool British style pub. I went there last May for the M3 Rockfest pre-party. Kip Winger performed an acoustic set and it rocked! The opening band (I can't remember their name) was lousy but Kip more than made up for it. The pub itself has a fun atmosphere and the staff was very friendly. Burn Me Once...should have known better. I had been there once before and walked out as the service was so bad. I should have known better, but it was the only place open late on a weekday. It was burning hot out and we were all in desperate need of water which we had to beg for several times was how things started. When we finally got our beers, both the Stella Artois and Yuengling tasted funny. I used to work in bars...tasted like they didnt clean their lines as these were drafts. It's cold and rainy, and I'm taking a class next door so I decided to try it again after a four year break. I requested the soup hot, it was served lukewarm and the second serving is hotter. This place does not have security most nights so if you have any issues like we did you are on your own. Management will not help. On the night of September 11,2022 a group of us came here to celebrate a friend but the night ended horribly. Our small group was being harassed by an extremely drunk man. We informed two people working there what was going on and nothing was done. The situation quickly escalated to this man going to his truck to get his weapon. No one cared for the safety of the customers. Everyone including the staff was put in danger due to the lack of proper training and procedures set in place. Really like this place! I have been here on several occasions and have really enjoyed myself. This is always a great go to place for beer and a burger. I had the fish and chips a cpl of times although good the portions are too huge for all to be consumed at one sitting. My hubby loves the steak sandwich! The menu offers a lot of great options for all, even those non meat eaters, LOL. And a large beer selection! We sat outside the last trip here and the only downfall was the smokers. Who wants to try to enjoy an outdoor meal with a ton of smoke polluting the fresh air. What ever you do, do not go here before a concert. They deny you happy hour and give you a a selective menu. The kicker is they can't modify any orders meaning if you don't want sauce, too bad. You'd think this meant your food would come faster as it's probably all prepared but think again! My husband and I waited over an hour for our two orders of fish and chips. The waiter came to our table maybe three times and we had to flag him down for a second drink and when he came back he forgot that I wanted a beer too. I have frequented this restaurant at least once a month for at least three years. I always order the same thing, the Lady Jane salad. It is fabulous. This past Friday my husband and I went expecting another great meal. Well the meal was as tasty as ever, but at about 2/3 the size it's always been in the past. The whole 'dinner salad' was now the size of the lunch salad. We both left feeling hungry. We tried to tell the manager how unhappy we were but after waiting over 10 minutes for her to appear we gave up and left. For me, I'd rather they had raised the price instead of tricking us into thinking nothing had changed. Not sure if I'll go back but it sure won't be for dinner. This place is only "ok". Not great. We've been there twice, and ordered different things each time. The food is a bit expensive, as are the drinks. The food is pretty un-inspired, but it's trying to be British. So...they succeeded? Here's what we have tried: *Potato leek soup - almost flavourless; *Crab cakes - WHAT?! $27 for two crabcakes that were more filler than crab *Caesar salad - tasted like caesar salad. Nothing special, nothing bad; *Fish n' Chips - REALLY greasy, but a large portion if you like Cod *Filet Mignon - ok, it's not a steakhouse. Meh. *Burger - wasn't bad. Good "safe" option, but nothing special about it. The beer menu... Very limited draft selection, and not that huge a bottled selection They were "out" of the first two I asked for. Ambience: nifty decor, but it is SUPER loud. If the weather is nice, you can sit outdoors (they have an out-door bar) on their patio. It is quieter there. Also...I'm not sure why, but they felt it necessary to bring in a mechanical bull. Last time I checked, bull riding isn't a British thing. Maybe they were trying to order the mechanical polo pony, and someone goofed. Either way, it's odd, and takes the whole thing down to a much skankier level. I don't take my daughter to a place with mechanical bulls. We haven't been back since they installed it, and likely won't return. If you're going there for good food or beer, save yourself the trip and go to Second Chance Saloon. read more

Beware of Union Jack's "power hour". Went there on a Friday night for a friend's birthday and decided to get a bunch of drinks during "power hour" because they are only $1. Here's the description from UJ's website. "It gets EVEN BETTER,..... enjoy POWER HOUR from 10pm-11pm where we let the gates down and offer *ANYTHING at the bar for just a $1 for this 1 hour window!! *excludes top shelf items" Now, normally this would be fine. Because everywhere else in the world, drinks are made with lower quality liquors unless specified. But, not here... Oh no, they expect you to say "make it with rail so it's $1" otherwise they pour the most expensive stuff in the glass. Long story short, walked in and expected to pay around $15 and ended up walking out $90 emptier. Bartenders couldn't care less, I would imagine that they get paid a much higher hourly to promote this scam because no one would ever tip a bartender for this kind of service. Never again. read more

We went to the restaurant before a music concert at merriweather. It was crowded. Only staff wore masks. They had a limited menu for the concert, which was a pity since their expanded menu looks great. Service was slow due to the number of customers. I had fish and chips. Coleslaw was very small but the fish was excellent. Chips were average. My partner had wings and he said that they were good. Typical British pub food. read more
