A must order mound of fries topped with sausage, lardon, the best gravy on earth and lots and lots of cheese finished under the salamander. Next came the roasted chicken with an incredibly crusty skin laid on top of a yucca mash and dollops of pesto throughout the plate. My husband and I also shared the Brussels sprouts which were roasted with crispy bacon and tossed with a hint of sweetness to counterbalance the bitterness of the cabbage. Second time here. This time I made it for brunch. Came here around 2 pm on a Sunday and it was packed. They said that the kitchen was backed up and they stopped serving food for a hour. So my 5 friends and I went to the bar and ordered bottomless mimosas. The bartender was great and refilled our glasses on time Within 20-30 minutes, we were able to get a table and our waitress was nice. She made sure that our glasses stayed filled. Food was great. I came here for lunch one Saturday afternoon with some friends. There was about a 15 minute wait which wasn't too bad considering it was the weekend. Once we got seated, I ordered the blta without the tomato & some fries. The garlic aioli that was served with the fries really hit the spot !! My sandwich itself was tasty however some of the bacon strips were too crispy for my liking. I often found myself biting into my sandwich and little bits of bacon would be falling out. Visited Union for birthday dinner on a Monday night. Had wanted to try it out for sometime. Unfortunately, it was my first and last visit. Food was average and service less than average. I ordered Union Gumbo - presentation was terrible (looked very unappetizing) and taste was lacking - it had one flavor - over spiced. At one point, I asked for some bread thinking that would help absorb some of the flavor. This brings be to the service. Our waiter didn't really check in with us. Had to flag him down for the bread... which never came. We did have other menu items, but nothing that would make me want to give this place another try. First off, I have to say I only picked this place because it was open on Thanksgiving. That being said, it was amazing. The staff was all nice and quick, especially being busy for the holiday. The drinks were fine; decent selection. But the food - phenomenal. Like no complaints, whatsoever. The butternut squash was unlike anything I've ever had like it. Savory and sweet, with fresh, sour bread to balance. The turkey was moist, and the sauce on it was a delicious compliment. Not too heavy or over seasoned. The stuffing also had great texture. The vegetables on the side were a little tough (not sure if they were over cooked or left out) but it wasn't inedible or anything And finally the pecan pie: the best I've ever had. Rich filling. Decadent texture. Perfectly crispy crust. And the bacon on top was a perfect finish. I thoroughly enjoyed my meal here. One of the best meals I've ever had at a restaurant. Love that they expanded and are still doing well, but the I have to be honest. The food is still pretty good overall, but we've been served RAW burgers on three separate occasions. Doesn't matter if you order medium well or medium rare. The manager came out to apologize once but then it happened again the next time- raw ground beef is simply nasty and should never happen. read more

First my server Joey was great. Easy and well informed. The gal at the front desk was also perfect and charming. Oh hell, it's was all good. Kinda like that perfect beach lunch we all need every one in a while. Open windows and beautiful design helped at this spot. I was not sure about the perfect glass of wine and is it white? Red blend? Joey went "Rosè?" And so it began.... Went meatballs and a slice of garlic bread and couldn't finish it. Too much garlic in the sauce, but some people (or most) love that. So many other choices so I'll be back to try more. The avocado toast looked great and the sandwiches looked huge. But it's the bar and vibe I loved and the reason I'll come back again and again. Union is so fun! I've been here for brunch, dinner, and today for late night drinks. I ordered an Old Fashioned which the bartender made perfect! The live music was awesome too. I didn't get the name of the band but they had a Lumineers-type sound and covered some great songs. The crowd was mixed, young and older, and overall everyone was having a fun Saturday night. Pretty mediocre food in a vibrant environment with indoor and outdoor seating. The burger was somewhat thin and served with a crispy slice of bacon. It was decent but pricey for the size. Nowhere near as good as 3rd Corner nearby. Mussels in a coconut broth and some pices of sausages were tasty but a small portion for a full meal. I've been to Union a few times now - each time hoping something changes but unfortunately, the food is just mediocre and the prices are way too high for what it is. A breakdown of what I've tried: -truffle fries: the three stars i'm giving are solely based on location, vibe of the restaurant and these truffle fries. Some of the best truffle fries i've ever had. Hands down. But, almost $8 for a basket. -wings: something strange about the sauce. Wings themselves are fine, nothing special, but a wierd aftertaste from the buffalo sauce. -caesar salad: pretty bland -tuna poke tacos: came with three mini tacos. These were good. Again, nothing special, but good. -prosciutto flatbread: not great. All the toppings slid right off the flatbread. My husband and I have enjoyed many meals here for about over a year. We typically go on the weekends. The service is typically very nice, quick, and friendly, and we have had 0 complaints up until now. We had the day off work and decided to come in today (Thursday). When we got there we realized the menu was missing our typical brunch orders. My husband asked the waitress about it as we didn't realize the all day brunch menu was only for weekends. Her response was "If you have time I can suggest somewhere else for you to go". This caught us completely off guard and we explained we normally come on weekends and will just choose something from the menu infront of us. When serving other tables the waitress appeared very happy and talkative, while serving us she was short and cold. She passed by us a minimum of 12 times without checking in on us. The buss boy was kind enough to get what we needed when I explained to him we hadn't seen our server in awhile. When other tables were leaving or asking for things she served them with a smile and cheery demeanor. We received the complete opposite. I like to give people the benefit of the doubt and believe everyone has a kind heart and mind. However, her treatment did make us question if we were being discriminated against due to our skin color. We absolutely love this place and have brought many friends here. We have even celebrated birthdays and other events here. To have received the treatment we did today is absolutely heartbreaking and we are so disappointed. read more

The avocado could have been more fresh but overall it tasted good. One egg was cooked too much so it didn't spill over. The fries were too overdone and burnt a little but still tasted good. Would have been better with blue cheese or goat cheese crumble, and maybe sweeter? Mimosa with grapefruit juice was refreshing. Parking was easy on second street, short walk over. The only reason I am not rating Union higher is because I once got food poisoning from eating the truffle mushroom flatbread. My sister did too on another occasion. I called to let the Manager know and was promised a $50 gift card that never arrived in the mail. Beyond that experience, this is a good place to watch a football game. They offer a bottomless mimosa that lasts up to two hours. They also have delicious spicy bloody marys and a variety of cocktail options. I was able to come back to union for another go. Since posting I spoke with the manager and was able to give it another shot. I was pleasantly surprised by the message I received from him about my experience. Great customer service. We were able to go back for lunch, and ordered the blackened chicken wrap with sweet potatoes fries. The wrap was delicious, it was just the right amount of everything. The fries were crispy, and warm. My wife ordered the BLAT, which was on yummy sourdough bread, and was too delicious. Her fries were crispy and warm. This place makes me wants move to Encinitas. Food so good I forgot to take a photo of it. The shrimp and grits took me to flavor town. Flatbread was solid, and my friends vegan salad looks really good too. This place is vibe. Come in & be nice to the regulars and the staff. I came here on a Friday night for SDRW and upon arrival I was very impressed with the interior. The atmosphere was almost like a sports bar but with a touch more class. Towards the end of the night, a live band started playing, real cool vibes. I started with a bone marrow appetizer and I was impressed. Granted, I think it's pretty hard to mess up bone marrow.. Next came the beef cheeks which were perfectly tender, though I'd have preferred more of a sear. My favorite part of the dish was the cheddar polenta, but it started to get a bit heavy. Last came the lemon vanilla parfait. I'm usually not a dessert guy, but I was absolutely stunned by this parfait; it was the best part of the meal! The parfait had some fresh berries and pie crumbs and everything came together so well. I'd probably go back just to get the parfait again. Our server was very friendly and attentive. The food wasn't standout amazing (maybe 4.5/5) but the overall experience and atmosphere bumped my review up to 5. read more

First off, let me just say that I've never left a Yelp review before. My experience here, however, compelled me to make an account just so I could write this review. When I looked on the menu and saw that they had a basket of truffle fries for $15 I thought to myself, "Those must be some damn good fries." So I bought them. At that price point, I was expected something gourmet: hand cut, crispy, perfectly seasoned. This is not what I received. Instead, I got a basket of fries with the following characteristics: -Thin, mass produced quality fries. The fries themselves were the type of fries you'd expect at a cheap beach snackbar. There's no way these were hand cut--they almost certainly came out of some bag they keep in their freezer. -Oily. These were probably the most oily fries I've ever eaten. I hand to wash my hands twice after eating them just to get the oil off. They were not crispy. Granted, I did take these fries to go. But, still, this is not what I was expected for $15. -Seasoning. These fries were WAY over salted. That, in addition to the fact that the fries are also sprinkled with salty Parmesan cheese, made them difficult to eat. This basket of fries was worth MAYBE 7 dollars. But, 15 dollars? No, that's an absolute rip off. They weren't the worst fries I've ever eaten. But, for $15, these fries should be something that I tell my grandkids about. They just simply were not very good. read more

Went the Friday after Thanksgiving at 3:30 p.m - We had a reservation for a party of 6 and were sat right away in a round booth table toward the back. Unfortunately there was no Happy Hour (what we came for) due to the holiday because they did brunch instead and don't do both brunch and HH on the same days. However, our server was so sweet, knowledgable, and on top of it that it made up for the no HH option. We came here for a late brunch on Saturday after a relaxing walk at Swamis beach. It was a gorgeous day to dine Al fresco and the Union Patio did not disappoint... We were a group of 6 so we were seated at the table with a fire pit ..while great for evenings and drinks, it becomes difficult to pass around things to try and even converse sometimes.. We all loved the brunch menu and really appreciated the Vegetarian and Vegan options for brunch...So many options compared to other brunch places...Our group tried the green omlet , Acai bowl, jackfruit and mushroom enchiladas, watermelon salad, beignets..The omlet was so well prepared and loaded with amazing veggies, served with a generous portion of breakfast potatoes and fruit. The beignets were soft and fluffy and the jam with it was delish ! The enchiladas were super tasty especially with the topping of the green sauce and beans...the Acai bowl was the best I have ever had, highly recommended...I mean how many places give you an Acai bowl with an actual young coconut..the only dish that was underwhelming was the watermelon salad - just too much Argula and hardly any watermelon . read more
