This place is really great. I love the set up of a store/restaurant, it's very casual and easy to order and dine in. I also appreciate the tables outside so that you can take your beverage of choice or meal and go sit and enjoy the weather. I ordered the Caprese sandwich. It had thick slices of mozzarella and was served with arugula as a substitute... which I thought was absolutely delicious and an upgrade. The service is always very efficient and nice. What a refreshing change from the usual coffee place, and so much more! I was attending a convention at the Convention Center. The first coffee place had a long line and only one hard-working but overwhelmed person working, the second was a price scam with one price listed and a second higher one charged at the register; I walked out of both. Then found Union Kitchen. It was so interesting that even though I was in a hurry, I found myself looking all around, realizing it was a small market. My sandwich here was pretty good; I just wish that they treated the environment better. I also got coffee; they do not offer it in a mug; must be served only in a to-go container even if one plans to drink it in house. They use Compass coffee, which is meh. The lettuce and tomato in the sandwich were overly cold; I'm guessing that the tomato is sliced ahead of time and stored cold. Overall, pretty good, but they should make it a nicer in-store dining experience for both the customer and the earth. read more

The meatball sub was excellent, moist and the marina sauce was flavorful. Nice hot sandwich for a quick lunch and fairly priced. The banana bread was excellent too, moist and not overly too sweet. Have you ever loved something so much that you wanted to say "I'll take them all"? Yea the thought crossed my mind but I was heading to the gym so I had to talk myself out of it. Ok onto the rest of the review... Negatives: Pricey Small selection I wanted to try their hot items (the Mac n cheese looked pretty solid even tho it was just sitting out uncovered) and their sandwiches but the reviews on the sandwiches have been pretty lackluster and with Smoked & Stacked & Unconventional Diner next door, it's hard to see myself getting a sandwich here anytime soon. This review is for the hot bar/sandwich part of the store only. Maybe I came on a bad night, but everything in the hot bar was cold as was the guy behind the counter. The sandwiches were fine, but not something I would go back for by any means...yes they were edible, but we didn't feel satisfied after eating them. The menu is small, I want to say 5 sandwiches. None are very adventurous or unique. We tried the turkey with bacon jam (can't taste any bacon jam), which is a basic turkey sandwich. We also tried the pork one, which was decent but not juicy enough to soak up the hard baguette and make it a little easier to eat. Again, tasted fine, but was a pretty lackluster sandwich (I was quickly reminded why I never feel like eating a sandwich). The rest of the grocery looked cool - they had some things that you can't find at your typical grocery store, and prices didn't seem outrageous. Maybe a good place to pick up a few items every now and then. read more

This place is a good option when I want a quick breakfast, or if I forget a grocery item at one of my regular stores. Given its location it's very convenient when you can't make it to another larger grocery store. My one gripe is how pricey it is, but I guess this is to be expected of a small grocery store with items sourced from local vendors. Like I mentioned before I come here as a second resort for groceries, the food is definitely its main attraction. I typically grab breakfast sandwiches and I enjoy the variety of cheeses that they use for the samiches. The food is not amazing but it gets the job done. On my most recent visit I had a donut and it was pretty unremarkable although cuz behind the counter told me it was the best donut in DC, YEAH IIGHT! The best part about this place has to be the customer service, everybody in here is extremely nice and always willing to go above and beyond to help. That and the convenience are definitely the things that keep me coming back. read more

This corner-store is a step above the rest! It is a one-stop shop for a hot breakfast sandwich, an artisan coffee, and local products like organic dog biscuits and other treats. I love that Union Kitchen Grocery acts as a launch pad for local food and beverage businesses that are trying to grow. Truly a fantastic concept! When I stopped by Union Kitchen Grocery, I got a giant avocado BLT sandwich. Not realizing how big the sandwich was, I added an egg, which was definitely not necessary, but incredibly delicious. The sriracha mayo that provided some moisture for the sandwich also packed a flavor punch that paired nicely with the rosemary bread. This sandwich was not just a regular BLT; the ingredients all clearly had a lot of thought and care go into them. Union Kitchen used to be my go to, especially before they re-did it with new management in early 2022. Ever since the reopening, I don't know what happened, but they have not gotten my coffee order right once. All I order is an iced mocha with almond milk, nothing fancy. Either it is hot or iced but not a mocha--it's never right. I just don't understand because it says what my order is right on the label! I've stopped asking for a new one because it happens every time. I understand order mixups every once in a while, but this happens consistently. I'll go somewhere else. read more

I have mixed feelings - I would say the grocery store is a very hipster-ish grocer catering to gentrifiers (sorry but let's be real). It is really cute, new, and has all the tasty things I'd be looking for but also is a bit pricey. Realistically though, this is catering to young, childless folks who need a little snack, some fancy frozen or to-go items, and drinks (beer and wine). We stopped in and bought some sandwiches. It wasn't really busy so we ate them in the store and then headed out. I also bought a matcha dairy free drink that I've had at whole foods before and was excited to see it but it was just a reminder that I'm pretty much a part of the gentrification problem! Ugh! Anyway, its a cute store but also a weird limited selection of gourmet foods. I would go back though. The sandwiches were really filling and really good. Oh one caveat about the sandwiches - bae got gluten free bread for his sandwich but it was SO small. I feel like they didn't accommodate for how small the bread is so it felt like he got gipped. Is it a grocery store? A coffee shop? A restaurant? Lets just say that it's all three of those things, and they do well at each one. Upon entering this place, you're greeted by cool looking foods, snacks, and other knick knacks. It also smells pretty good since they have both the coffee bar and food bar. I went there with the intent on getting a late breakfast, but I was surely tempted to buy groceries and other stuff that I didn't need lol. Anyway, i ordered a breakfast croissant and a french vanilla late from the coffee bar and let me tell you something. It was easily one of the best late's that I've had in the city. I don't consider myself a coffee connoisseur in the least bit, but I can point out good coffee when I taste it. Shout out to the barista that hooked me up that day. Now back to the croissant-- i really enjoyed that as well and will definitely be back to try other items on the menu. I'm glad that I don't live walking distance to this spot, although I wouldn't complain if you all opened one in the SE/SW neighborhood. Let's keep it short and sweet. This is a small grocery store in a good location. It's great for when you're in a rush and want to get something to eat on your way to work or for a quick snack. They have a nice "Made in DC" section and the staff is pretty knowledgeable about what they offer. It is a bit pricey though but they do have good coffee and lattes. read more

Lots of interesting local bites (desserts, pastries, power bar type snacks). The staff are super helpful and knowledgeable and I always like to talk to them and find something new. I've only tried one sandwich here, and thought it was pretty good. The bread was actually delicious (something that doesn't usually stand out even at some better known DC sandwich spots). Had it been $1 cheaper it would've been a real standout but I was satisfied for the cost. In fact I think everything here is a bit more expensive than you'd find elsewhere, but this is part of a food incubator, so the higher price goes to offset the great cost of the services they provide to both customers and manufacturers. Been coming here from almost 2 years. This place is great, and a true gem grocer across the slew of corporate franchise BS you get in Washington, DC (your run of the mill groceries from Giant, Whole Foods, Trader Joes). It's hard to find quality curated and LOCAL goods these days. Whole Foods used to be that but it's becoming another Walmart for the elite. Yes the other reviews say this place is pricey, but you are paying for the grab and go convenience of curated quality products. I rather support these guys than Giant down the street for example. They specialize in fan-favorite snacks, curated bevs, fresh pastries, good coffee and supporting local DC food creators. These people give a shit, and that's appreciated. On that topic, as you guys stack your shelves don't hesitate to add more local produce if possible. For example quality milk, creamer, eggs, butter and meats. Not everybody wants to buy ultra pasteurized Robinson Dairy or Nature's Promise shit that's stalked on every shelf in this country. I would happily buy local good like this and pay more for it on your shelves. On the vegetables and fruits you have, use up that space in your store to carry stuff that's in season + what would be typically on someone's grocery list. Good apples, oranges, onions, tomatoes, cucumbers, bananas, peppers, potatoes etc. just some of your pantry basics. Don't worry about carrying the same Organic Girl lettuce and Driscoll's raspberries as Giant does. Find a farmer in Maryland or Virginia and have their stuff. read more

I have been here both for the kitchen and the grocery store and I would recommend both to friends. The grocery store has some fun, unique items, but is a little bit pricey, so it wouldn't ever be your everyday grocery store. The kitchen is also fun and has a lot of unique flavors, both on the hot bar and on their sandwich menu. So far, I have only been able to try the Philly Roast Pork sandwich, but it had a lot of great flavors with the pairing of the pork, broccoli rabe, sharp provolone, and the hot peppers. The crispy bread just made it even better, providing a nice crunch with each bite, and when all of the juices from the pork, rabe, and hot peppers got soaked into the bread, it was just amazing. Overall, I've had great experiences here and in my opinion the only thing bringing it down is the high prices of a lot of the grocery products. read more
