Horrible at pink and whites, decent at acrylics, good at pedicures. For the pink and whites, the woman couldn't file them the way I wanted and slammed the file down and said "why don't you do it yourself." I was shocked. My nails are different lengths, the shape is odd, the white is too far back, and she made both of my thumb cuticles bleed. I cannot believe I had to pay for this poor experience and look. I went another time to get normal acrylics and had a better experience as far as the actual quality of the nail/polish goes, but the woman still did make me bleed. The nails broke quickly too--maybe they're using a low quality product? I've since only gone back for pedicures. They do these well! Good scrub, long massage, clean, etc. So, depending on what you're going for... this is can be a good spot! read more

I didn't have time so I came by the next day to get a pedicure, and I must say it was the worst pedicure I have ever had, plus worst service. I will not bother going back for corrections. Last Monday I was dying of the unbearable heat at work and decided to stroll in for a mani/pedi because I didn't fell like walking the extra 2 blocks to where I usually go (the heat makes us do things we wouldn't normally do). I generally am ok spending a bit more when it comes to certain things, manicures included. Fortunately I can pay a lower amount and still get a really nice manicure. For gel/shellac it's only $30, and they now take credit/debit for payment, which is a huge plus. The ladies are always friendly and there's rarely a wait for an appointment. I had a pedicure there more than a year ago and got a terrible infection on my big toenails because of it. I saw 3 doctors and they told me it might never get back to normal, very difficult to treat. It was painful, now it just look terrible. The lady who did it cut my nails way too short at some angles and obviously didn't know what she was doing.... Stopped off for a quick pedicure around 7pm. I was surprised they were even open. Apparently they are open until 8pm to accommodate the work crowds. Their spa pedicures are awesome. The woman who gave me my french tips did an excellent job. She was quick, painless and the french tips were just how I like them. Thin and not fake looking thick. Easy, consistent and inexpensive. They're really careful about the amount of cuticle they cut (i'm big on that) and they treat my boyfriend like a king when he goes! So this is not a glam joint but they get the job done. Your nails look super shiny once they're done. i'm sorta kinda new to the whole waxing thing -- i don't wear bathing suits that often and any guy i know doesn't really care so i didn't really start doing it until a year or two ago. since i was a little nervous i figured going to a fancy pants salon was the way to go. it was definitely the way to get initiated to the experience, but i was in a bind one weekend with no appointment, so i wandered into union nails. now that i've found nancy, i'm never going back. sure i don't get to gossip, and the "room" is a little weird, but its pretty quick and painless (seriously, barely hurts) and they're pretty thorough. thumbs up! but since this is a nail salon, i feel as if i should review that part too: this is the first place i went to for a pedi when i first moved to the neighborhood, then tried all the others, and now i'm loyal... it's not fantastic, but its reliable and not pricey. and if you're like me and are too lazy to cut your own toenails its nice to have a place nearby that'll do it for you without charging you an arm and leg or making your toenail fall off a few weeks later... read more

Usually go to a place closer to my apartment in Lower Pac but I was running errands in the neighborhood and popped into this place. Besides being overpriced for a what you get for their gel mani - the next day my ring and pointer finger on my left hand started to swell. Another day goes by - full blown infection under my pointer finger and the side of my ring finger. Without going too deep into the gory details - I ended up having to extract the infection with a pin, squeeze it out and treat it with Neosporin. Gross - but others need to know about this. read more

This place is consistently great. They are always fully staffed, clean, professional and welcoming. The work is also very high quality. My regular mani pedis last forever! They do an ok job, but they rush you in and out. I don't understand why all these nail places don't charge a few bucks more so they can pay their nail techs more and make the experience nicer. The women don't smile or talk to you and they sometimes butcher your nails. a good friend told me not to come here but i only gave it a shot because it is 2 blocks away and convenience was important in this particular instance. The place has curb appeal but it is hands down the worst pedicure I've gotten in SF. My feet were in the water for maybe 2 minutes before she started doing her thing clipping & cutting. 5 minutes later there was scrub on my DRY feet & legs. I made a comment so she had me dip my feet in the water for a second then she started the worst heel scrub job ever. The polishing was decent but at the end, I asked another worker who spoke better English if my heels look acceptable. She was like "ooo! i fix it i fix it!" Her name is Rosie and she is very sweet and she did fix it, but pedicures should be relaxing and this was certainly amateur hour or she just didn't care. There are other places around this area. I came here with a friend to have a nice experience and girl talk after a champagne brunch on Polk. We walked in and immediately had distracted customer service and were rushed into our chair. My pedicure water was scalding hot. Once my services began I explained that I had to meet a friend very quickly outside as I had her cell phone. They acted rude and asked for my credit card right away to pay..as if i would run away without paying. After they had me sign for my charge (while still getting my pedicure) they asked how I wanted to tip. I told them I didn't have cash and they kept asking for the tip, for the tip, for the tip. My friend felt uncomfortable and needless to say, i didn't get my nails painted because they wanted me out of there so quick. And they STILL charged $35! My friend finally finished and wanted to tip for me via her card and they still insisted the ATM. The paint job was blegh and experience was HORRIBLE! I don't mind Union Nails. Most of times there isn't a long line, I'm treated very nicely, and love all of their nail polish colors. $28 for their spa mani/pedi isn't awful, and I notice that my polish doesn't chip days after I visit them (a constant problem I had at other nail salons). Most of the time it's been a fairly relaxing experience where I don't feel particularly rushed to get out of my seat. The only time that I can remember where I was unhappy here was when they were out of massage chairs and I had my mani/pedi at one of the tables but was charged the amount for a spa one. There isn't a huge difference in terms of the price, but the girl did a good job. Space is definitely here, but the one thing that needs some serious improvement is the fact that they re-use the same tools on their customers. I know they sterilize them, but I know a ton of other places that'll open new packages of tools in front of you so you know they're sterile. I like Union mostly because of where its located in relation to where I live, but when I move, I will most likely look for a new place and only come back if my friends are up to it. read more
