After a so so experience years ago I avoided this place for years. However a neighbor friend raved about them so I decided to give them another shot. BAD IDEA. First I waited so long for a pedicure that the hot water went cold (upwards of 20 minutes). I figured okay they're busy. However, when they decided to work on someone who came in after me first I nearly left. They promised me someone would help me soon so I waited. Well that person cut my pinkie toenail so short that she cut the skin. Should have left at that point but I stayed on. Once she was equally aggressive with cuticle cutting on that same toe so I just walked out bleeding toe and all. Seriously. The entire toe bed is bloody. read more

My experience here was so strange. Firstly, the woman who was doing my nails grabbed my phone when I said I was asking a friend which color I should do. The manicure itself was good there's no complaints but the customer service here is lacking. When I went up to pay the receptionist just looked at me until I asked how I could pay. They don't accept debit cards and make you take cash out of the ATM. I took out the exact cash amount of the final price and then was asked where the tip was. I felt uncomfortable, took extra cash out, the ATM said I could only take out $20 at that point since it had nothing else. I asked if they could break it and give me 10 (which I felt was pretty generous given my experience, i do normally tip but I was so weirded out here). She hands me the cash and I say thank you and leave, assuming that she'd kept $10, nope! I was about to cross the street when the lady walks out and asks how much cash I received and I said I asked for it to be broken? Had to walk back in and was basically coerced into giving them them the tip. You people are so weird, I will never come back here. I tip based off my experience and shouldn't be obligated and forced to. I do not recommend this place to anyone. read more

Since penning my original review of Union Nails seven years ago, a couple things have changed: - The price has gone up $5 for a spa mani/pedi to $28 + The spa mani/pedi now includes hot stone massage action We went around 9:45 on a Sunday morning and had no problem securing two spa chairs next to each other. They do a great job (I almost always get a gel mani/pedi) and are super quick and efficient, usually doing my mani/pedi simultaneously. Terrible experience from start to finish! 1)I booked and they made me wait almost 30 minutes before sitting me. I was not the only person waiting, apparently they overbook on purpose. 2) the lady who did my manicure filed my nails uneven and with different shapes (some round and some square); when I asked to fix them she handed me the file and said "you do it". 3) right after finishing my pedicure, the lady asked me to move to a different chair to accommodate two other clients who were together (they had also been waiting for 40') and wanted me to walk bare feet. I refused and asked her to help me put my flippers on - while doing it, she ruined the polish on both feet I'm never going back there! read more

I have been to this location a half a dozen times. Ladies are super sweet except for one. She is the main one who does dip, older woman. She is rude and doesn't provide the service you would expect paying $45 to have your nails done. I have gotten dip here before and this time she rudely asked me if I had gotten my current nails done there and I responded with not this time. She rolled her eyes and went about it. She does an ok job- pretty stingy with the dip. I have long nails to most places do 3 times in the dip not her, just twice. As I go to pay, she says $50. I asked why it wasn't $45 like stated on the sign and like I have paid before. She said because of removal of your last dip. Mind you I have never been charged $5 for removal here before nor does it state any where it's $5 for removal. It's not the $5 charge, it's how she went about it and was condescending to a paying customer. I tipped her and she had the nerve to scoff at me as I was leaving because I tipped off of the $45 not the BS $50. There are SO MANY nail places in the city. She needs to do better and be nice to customers! It's a very small thing to ask. Side note: the ATM is not free. This is my go-to nail salon in SF! I walk by numerous nail salons to get to this one :) I've never made a reservation, rather always walk in - at times I have to wait 5-10 minutes, but normally they can take me immediately. The staff is always super friendly and willing to chat with me or let me relax based on my needs for that day. My typical service is gel manicure and pedicure and they do a great job! Most likely because of my skin/nail type, sometimes the gel manicure will last up to 3 weeks, but other times just 2 weeks. read more

I always go to this salon because it's in the neighborhood, and well, I always go here. After my spa mani/pedi today, I decided I need to venture out more to other options in the neighborhood for a few reasons. The first is that I always feel rushed and hustled when I walk in the door and when I sit down. I can understand if it's a weekend and the place is filled with other customers, but I walked in today without a single other customer in the shop, and still I was rushed. The woman who did my manicure was very cold and stand-offish. At one point she reached over me abruptly to grab the remote and turn off the back massager (that they turned on and set the setting and intensity) because it was shaking my hands too much for her to polish. Which is fine, I get it - just do it in a nicer way. The deal breaker was after saying "owww" a few times as she clipped my cuticles and her lack of response until she saw blood and looked at me as if I did something wrong. All I was thinking at that point was chick ...it was YOU that did it! While I walked away with a decent no-chip mani, I also have 4 bloody cuticles out of my 10 fingers. I give her a C-. Now the lady that did my pedi was very sweet, took her time, smiled at me, and was providing good service. I had decided in my head I was going to give her a big tip and let her decide if she was going to share it with the one that did my mani but had already walked away. That was until I went to grab my bag to look at my phone and she thought I was about to leave and she said "do you have cash to give me a tip?" I froze and looked at her and I think she thought I didn't understand so she repeated, "cash for tip?". I said "yeah, I'm just getting my phone". She had an A until that happened. Then she went down to a B-. So is tipping mandatory now? NO. Was I going to give a tip? YES. Did I no longer want to give a tip? You bet. In good conscience I couldn't walk out without giving a tip but really, when you're paying $40 for a subpar service, feeling like a tip is being demanded doesn't seem fair. Am I right? PSA: opens at 9:30am instead of 9:00am as Yelp indicates. Learned the hard way when I arrived at 9:10am and had to kill 20 min until they opened. This is my go to nail salon as I live a few blocks away. If you go early and have 2 ladies working on you you can sometimes be out the door after 35 min with a fresh pedicure and gel nails! They have an amazing collection of colors. They are consistently busy so sometimes the wait is long, but worth it IMO. read more

I love this nail salon, and ever since I moved out of the area, I miss it. The ladies in here hustle! While I've felt rushed at times to pick out my nail color (to be fair, I can be very indecisive), they never rush on the quality of their work. They've even stayed late for me (I was the only one in there 30 minutes after closing hours), and they took their time to make it perfect! I felt so bad, but they were very gracious and polite. My gel nails last at least 3-4 weeks looking fresh after going here, and the pedicures are wonderful. I'd highly recommend. read more

This review is for Nancy. She's not the friendliest, but she's really sweet. Most importantly, she is efficient, knows how to shape nails, and the paint job that she does lasts more than 3 weeks! Downside is that she does not work Sundays :(. For the other nail technicians, they should stop gossiping in Vietnamese. During one of my visits, one of the technicians asked another technician, "is your client Vietnamese! She looks straight up vietnamese! If she said she's Chinese, she's lying!" Came to this place because my gal, Wah at Pearly nails got sick and cancelled and I needed to get a pedi before I leave town. I walked in and they were able to seat me pretty immediately which was good but that's all that was good about this experience. The woman who did my pedicure was ROUGH and sped through the entire ordeal- I was in and out in 35 minutes. Here is why I will not be returning- She cut so far down the side of my big toenail that if I don't get an ingrown toenail it will be a Christmas miracle. She asked me if I wanted some extra scrubbing and I agreed- I get pretty calloused. She spent all of 3 minutes on a treatment that consisted of extra goo on my feet and scrubbing. 3 minutes. Then she painted my toes in the flash of an eye. It was sloppy, there was paint on the skin of the toes and to top it off one of my big toes was cut diagonally. All in all it was $37. Apparently the 3 minute callous treatment was $10... Never again. read more

Union Nails has turned out to be my default nail place for all those times when I don't want to make the trip to Bella or spend the cheddar on Silk. While going to Union Nails is by no means a transformative or overly cushy experience, it's quick, in my experience safe, convenient, with efficient if not overly loquacious workers and quite a good selection of OPI and Essie. As someone else mentioned, there is one lady who will sometimes shove the other manicurists aside and grab your hand and start filing away while she yells at whomever she just displaced. Last time I went she did my manicure, but seemed to have taken her happy pills and skipped the drama and displacement, so perhaps times, they are a-changin'. If you're in the neighborhood and want to get your nails done without too much of a fuss, this is the place for you. read more

This is my favorite, regular, never-ever-hafta-paint-my-own-toenails-myself-because-it's-so-cheap place. I love it so much, one time the technician unexpectedly sneezed on my feet. Just need to say that the gel manicures from this place last forever!! It's been over two weeks since my last manicure, and they're still intact and would be flawless if my nails hadn't grown. Normally from other places the gel would start peeling off after a week or so, leaving an ugly scratch on the surface and my nails looking horrendous. Somehow they end up getting the job done skillfully and efficiently with results that are worth paying the extra gel manicure price for. I use my hands a lot-- at work, at home-- AND, I'm super clumsy with my fingers in general so it's impressive that the manicure would last this long. Don't care so much about the service- typical nail salon experience, but I don't expect much of that anyway as long as they get the job done. I actually like it when it's quiet and I have my own space while being pampered, which they fulfill so it's all good for me. I've been here for mani-pedis and gel manicures, and the ladies here do an awesome job. Clean, quick, and meticulous without a ton of mess-ups like some other salons I've been to. I've never been treated as rudely as a customer as I have at Union Nails. I came in for the first time on an average afternoon for a mani and pedi. Before getting my nails painted, I was asked to pay, so I pulled the cash out of my wallet and realized I only had enough to pay plus give a 15% tip. While I'd usually tip more, I just handed this amount to the woman doing my mani and figured it would have to do for my first time there. This is when sweet mani lady turned into psycho-bitch mani lady. Before I handed over the money, she was nice and friendly and calm and very quiet. But after I handed over the money, her evil persona unleashed. She started talking very loudly and aggressively to the lady doing my pedicure in Vietnamese, all while quickly brushing the paint on my nails and roughly handling my hands. She quickly coated each of my nails while bitching about something or "someone" to her co-worker and while not even looking at me. This lasted for about 3 minutes, but I didn't know what to say because I was seriously shocked. Now, I don't speak Vietnamese, nor am I familiar with the language, but I swear expletives were coming out of her mouth directed toward me. A few hours later, when the paint started chipping off of my nails, I swore I would never go back. This is why I'm not really comfortable with nail places that make you pay (and give tip) before they're completely done with their service, although I understand how they don't want you digging in your purse while your nails are drying. Well, good thing I've given up on Union Nails because I've become a loyal patron of Merry Manicures down the street on Polk - much friendlier people and they actually do a professional job. My fellow nanny friend and I like to meet for coffee every few weeks to swap stories and catch up on what is going on in life. We decided to make it even better and meet for coffee and a mani/pedi. Breakdown of Union Nails +open at 930am +take walk ins +lots of colors to choose from +color on my hands stayed on for a week (that is a long time for me! I cook a lot and do a lot of dishes) +Massage chairs felt great. -They were really pushy on the extra massages. I didn't think it felt good enough to pay the extra 20$ to get the extra hand and foot massage. They kept saying "but your friend is getting it, you should too" I hate that!! -The water in the foot bath was cold! -When we paid my friend paid with a credit card, and they told her to leave a tip with cash. Who tells you you have to leave a tip!?!?!?! It was a so-so experience. With all of the great nail salons in SF, I don't think I will be going back. read more

Union Nails and I just do not seem to get along... I first came here about 5 years ago - they clipped my ring finger, it bled for an hour, they didn't apologize, put the weird green stuff on, and it still got infected - I couldn't type for a week. I vowed never to go back. Five years later, I felt that I needed to let go of my anger and give them another try. The place seemed the same, same owner, lousy ventilation, and a decent color selection. I went for just a color change, it was a decent job. Then I saw the owner start mixing the colors!! She was putting in bright deep red in some of the sheer pinks. While I was trying I wanted to take a closer look. I'm pretty militant about my nail polish colors - I can tell the difference between Sugar Daddy, Mademosille and Starter Wife - and the ones at Union Nails looked like Fiji and Ador-a-ball?? they dumped a bunch of white polish in them... boo!!! It was a very mediocre experience overall but the reason for the low rating is because 4 of the gel nails have already peeled off! Also-the credit card machine was "down" but I was not told this until after the entire experience. I used to go to Union Nails for pedicures, manicures and wax jobs...until one awful day. The technician cut my cuticles to the point that I was bleeding! I was in so much pain. And, it didn't end there. A week later I was in immense pain - went to the toe doctor, who put me on Cipro (heavy duty anti-biotics). Didn't clear the infection. The infection spread to other parts of my body. As it turns out, that darn pedicure gave me MRSA. Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) is a specific strain of the Staphylococcus aureus bacterium that has developed antibiotic resistance to all penicillins, including methicillin and other narrow-spectrum β-lactamase-resistant penicillin antibiotics. Over the next 6 months, I was on 5 more anti-biotics to treat the condition. It was AWFUL!!!!! I will never set foot again in Union Nails. Worst part of the whole thing - I went in there to complain. Guess what they gave me? A gift certificate for another pedicure! Ironic. read more

They are very clean, quick, and get the job done for the least amount of money I have seen on Polk. I have been very happy with their mani-pedis and bikini waxing here for 3 years. BUT, I'm not joking when I say that venturing in there is like reliving that Seinfeld episode where Elaine flips out because she's convinced the girls working in the nail shop are talking about her. Every time I go to Union Nails I leave with a complex. I pretend I don't care that they're visibly laughing and sometimes pointing at my toenails, or what I'm wearing, or even my hairy legs but when I leave that place I have to drink a martini to recover. You may remember the place that used to be above the Thomas PINK store in Union Square--then, they moved to Sutter Street above the Big Pagoda store. They're related to BELLA nails in the Marina. Anyway, the orignal owner is now BACK and it is rockin'! While she was gone, my nails suffered terribly. I went to every hot, trendy, new spot but, had one unpleasant experience after another (I even resorted to doing them myself and you know that's bad). My fingers and toes are purr-fectly polished and shaped and I couldn't be happier. They take walk-ins and appointments. I have to compliment them on their ability to accomodate walk-ins. When you think about it, its actually very difficult. Can you imagine trying to manage a business where any amount of people can just walk-in at any moment?? At Union Nails, they know what they are doing, they are fast efficient and get it done, ive gotten mani/pedis that took 2 hours and thought it was a complete waste of time, when here they can do it all in half the time and it comes out just as good or better. They take cash or credit card and have a no fee atm inside too. Good polish selection. I would give them 5, but the decor inst up to date, but 4 starts for being the MOST efficient! read more
