Summary: This place is terrible, don't go. See pictures of my current vs what they tried to give me (almost the same script) I have been coming here since 2021, and I have consistently come every year since. I want to start by saying this review is not for Dr. Louis Sarantakos but for the office staff and my experience. Dr. Louis Sarantakos has always been great, and I would recommend him if he wasn't working here. On January 8th, I came in for my annual review. I got my appointment time mixed up, and they were able to accommodate me by allowing me to see Dr. Jean Louis. While Jean was nice, he didn't listen very well. I explained my vision was still blurry, and I didn't think the prescription he recorded was correct, but I got met with, "Well, that's the best you're going to get." I have been wearing glasses for 25/27 years of my life, and I am aware that I won't have 20/20 vision, but I also know when a prescription is off. I then went on to purchase a new pair of frames/lenses. Due to my insurance, I ended up paying $756 out of pocket, and let me explain later how I was not told an honest price. On January 16th, I came in to pick up my glasses, which were in rough shape. The prescription was wrong, and one of the women told me just to wear it for a week or two, even though I explained it was blurry. On top of that, I ordered a high index of 1.74, and the glasses had a lens bludging out through the side. I explained this was unacceptable, especially after paying $569 for lenses before my $170 discount. Marc, who is truly rude, then finds 101 excuses as to why he cut them the way he did. He asked to see the glasses I was currently wearing, and to his surprise, they were the same size, so his excuses quickly started to die down. I said since I won't accept these glasses, I would like my eyes rechecked, and then we can send them out again. On January 17th, I went to see Dr. Louis Sarantakos for my follow-up appointment to have my eyes rechecked. It was no surprise that he said the prescription I was provided was not the same one he was getting. On January 24th, I was told my glasses were ready at 3:10 PM. I arrived at the location at 5:15 PM, and I think you can see where this is going; they were not ready. Trying to look on the bright side, I started looking at another pair of frames I was considering buying. In that process, I asked the young man helping me how much lenses would cost me out of pocket for all the things I wanted on them, and he quoted me $400 out of pocket and no use of insurance, so how is it that initially I was charged $569 before my insurance? This is when I knew this business was not running ethically anymore. Then, here comes Marc, who brings over my glasses with the glass still bludging out and says, "That's the best you're going to get." Marc was even great enough to get a ruler to build his case as to why, but again, it was just empty excuses. I asked what my options were because I refused to take these glasses, and they said to get another frame to me, I just need to pay an additional $62 for the new frames on top of the $756 already paid due to the fact they already filed the insurance claim (this was a lie as I called the insurance and they only filed a claim on the exam and nothing else). To tie this all together, I said I wanted a refund, and they said no, you either take the glasses or get a new frame. I stated I would call the credit card and dispute this charge, and the young woman said, "Okay, do it." I hope you have learned my personality by now. I immediately called my credit card and insurance companies to report what was happening. I also emailed USO to let them know that since this all happened, I was reporting it. Within five minutes of that email, Marc called me. He said, "I am going to refund you and email you a copy of your medical records, and I think it's best you find somewhere else to go." What I find crazier is that he thought I would never go back, especially as long as he was there. I would recommend no one go. Story ended... If you think about going, don't. read more

Reviewing bc they need more love. This is a high end glasses store that did not once make me feel uncomfortable or bad about being broke. I've been twice now, and both associates who helped me were incredibly kind, knowledgeable, and patient. I'm trying to buy incredibly expensive frames, and they took the time to thoroughly research my vision insurance and came up with the best payment option when we found out I was out of network. They told me the sale ends on the 17th, but that I could put some money down before the sale ends to lock in the price of the frames, then pay the rest as I am able on a later date. They are professional and personable, and I think the other reviews just aren't giving them credit where credit is due. Very excited about my new glasses :) read more

I've been getting my specs at this store for a good twenty years and I've never had less than an excellent experience. I cannot vouch for the eye exams as I always come with a scrip from my ophthalmologist. It's mostly high-end frames, but they do have inexpensive ones if that's what you're after. The salespeople and owner are really nice and quite helpful. They give honest feedback on which frames suit you better; on one or two occasions they even steered me to a less expensive pair. They even take my union insurance, which not everyone does. The pro move is to wait for the 50% off sales, good on most frames. My glasses have always been ready on time if not early, and the order and prescription have always been fulfilled perfectly. It's one of the few independent stores left. I cannot say enough nice things about this practice. I've been going here for two years and every time they have provided the best service, and are extremely kind and patient. Optometrists seem very knowledgeable and staff is very helpful. They always make sure I get the most out of my purchase, by work with (and without) insurance, helping with repairs, and talking me through all my options. I recommend them to everyone in nyc. Would not come here if you care about customer service. Any area of remote concern you might have about your vision or otherwise is better assessed at a practice whose business model is less commercial. Union Square Opticals books every appointment in 15 minute intervals such that if you even 30 seconds late beyond the 5 minute grace period, they refuse to perform the "comprehensive eye exam" as advertised. Ironically, the "comprehensive eye exam" takes an estimated 20-25 min (per sales associate) so they don't even allot themselves enough time to do what they're supposed to and prioritize intake at the sacrifice of quality. For full transparency, I came here to assess my intraocular pressure and they 1. neglected to tell me they had the relevant machinery until sternly prompted; 2. refused to see me anyways because they couldn't make the extra 3-5 minutes. The focus was on shoo'ing me out rather than trying to accomodate. Separately, their selection of eyeglasses is expensive and limited at a cursory glance of the facility, in addition to being skewed towards mid to high end female eyewear. All in all, if you're looking for a place to sit down and talk to the doctor about your results and understand what next/steps are, would strongly urge you to seek other expertise. If you're looking for a cosmestic upgrade/outfitter, would also advise you against Union Square Optical, especially as a male. Understand this might come off as a "Karen" post and that this is New York City, but if you value your time and wallet, please go to the adjacent Lenscrafters or anywhere else. Response #1 to Marc R. Wish I could give 0 stars. I showed up 15 min early, and they were so incredibly rude and made me so uncomfortable. They would not answer my questions about pricing properly, and the front associate was shuffling me around and starting random exams and stopping them halfway through. They asked me to take my contacts off and then mumble away - if I can't see your lips move without my contacts and you speak in a quiet low tone, I am unable to understand you! The doctor proceeds to spend less than 5 minutes on my check up and after finishing without saying much during the appointment, he goes "do you have any questions?" Like what? I don't even know what questions I'm supposed to ask. As a doctor, it's your responsibility to give me an overview of your findings (prescription change, eye health) and make me feel comfortable - after this, feel free to open it up to questions. I did not study medicine and I don't know what I am supposed to ask you to do for an eye exam. Regardless, he was so rude after I did ask about my prescription change and seemed to belittle me because I didn't know my prescription. I'm sorry - you are the doctor! You just conducted an eye exam. How am I expected to magically tell you my prescription? He sent me on my way back to this front desk associate who was like "okay now what can I do for you?" Huh? I don't know! Your colleague told me to go to you! This place needs operational help and coaching in respect. AVOID! They referred me to a specialist months ago for tests, and even though the specialist said I was fine, they never followed up. I assumed we were good, but when I went in for contacts three months later, Union Square Optical told me the specialist is requiring vision therapy... a $3,600 treatment not covered by my insurance. Except when I called the specialist, he NEVER said vision therapy was required. I communicated this to USO and at no point did they apologize about the miscommunication. I've been seeing Dr. Sarantakos at Union Square Optical for 7+ years for my annual exam & contact lens renewal and have had nothing but exceedingly positive experiences. The staff are always kind, there is never a wait time longer than 5 mins, the exams have always felt sufficiently thorough, and I'll be forever grateful to Dr. S for helping me find what is surely the only brand & model of contact lenses that doesn't irritate my sensitive eyes. The other staff also deserve added praise for always responding to my emails & phone calls professionally and in a timely manner. They are severely lacking in phone etiquette and will often cut you off by putting you on hold for extended periods of time before they know why you're calling. They dont listen well when you arent on hold either- so conversations become pretty frustrating. Ive had both 2/5 and 4/5 star visits here. I do think the doctor is very kind and helpful, though the sessions feel really rushed. You can tell he's been doing this a long time and his "chair side" manner is great :) I don't think their selection is the best (very expensive $600+) though, but when I was looking I didn't feel supported in understanding different frames. Stay away if you value your time, because at this place they do not. I have been to this place before to get lens prescriptions and not had a problem, but today was a different story. I called to make an appointment and was told they could see me at 10:40, so I commuted half an hour in from Brooklyn, only to arrive and be told basically "Oops." They didn't have that time available and didn't realize until after I had got off the phone. They said they tried calling me. I looked at my phone and saw they had done so at 10:35, obviously way after when I would have had to leave to get there. The lack of any effort to fit me in once I arrived was bewildering. The staff gave zero cares that they had inconvenienced me and expected me to reschedule, despite them booking me for this time and me being there at this time. Never, ever again. Staff is friendly. Eye doctor is okay. Not very expansive, not too engaged. Here's the reason for the rating. My last visit, my second, I decided I wanted to switch to a different type of contacts, daily. They said that would be a $49 "fitting fee". It wasn't really clear what that entailed. I think it's just a way for them to charge their patients more money. I asked the doctor what the charge was for. "Oh, um, just to see if the new contacts fit your eyes comfortably." What she did to determine that was NOT worth $49. That got me suspicious, so I checked the prices of the contacts I ordered through them. Holy moley! They are so overpriced! Do not go here. You can definitely find a better doctor and less greedy place than here. If they're out to gouge their patients for money as much as it seems they are then their priority is not your health. read more

Dr. Sarantakos is a fantastic optometrist and the shop is exceedingly efficient. I've used them to process my glasses through insurance a number of times (even when bringing in my own frames for a new prescription) and have never had a problem. My info is always correct and the staff is professional. They carry a nice mix of higher end and budget friendly frames. Keep an eye out for their frame sales. read more

I've only recently joined the eyeglass club. I knew it was coming but I held out as long as I could. The last straw - menus in restaurants at night. Can't mess around with that. As an eyeglass virgin, I found the first time very pleasant. It didn't hurt a bit. The optometrist was gentle and kind. She explained each step before she did it and after she was finished told me everything would be just fine. What a great experience. We embraced each other and hugged quietly until the next patient arrived. We reluctantly parted and glanced into each others eyes as I left the room. "Wait" she said. "Remember one thing - your prescription is 1.25" (okay..the embracing part really didn't happen;-) That was the easy part. Now I had to find a pair of specs. That's when vanity kicked in and things got messy. They seemed to have a large selection to choose from but like I said - I'm a virgin to all this so I really can't compare. The thought of having to pick a frame, order lenses and wait was a bit too much to handle on my first day. After all, these are only reading glasses. I decided on an inexpensive pair of ready to go frames (I went with orange Visualites). I'm guessing these are slightly better than drugstore glasses with a dash of style. I'm told I'll eventually collect a few pairs, loose them, crush them, etc. so there's no point in getting anything expensive. The staff was helpful and they always have creative window displays. The doctors are always helpful and professional on all my visits, helping to answer my questions and letting me try on the right contacts until the correct fit was found. I ended up getting glasses as well on my last visit and just got called that the lenses are ready for pick up - in record time given that we're almost at year's end. It's been a couple of years since I actually made time to get my eye exam done, but Dr. Lou (Sarantakos) and the staff made it so quick and painless. Everyone was personable, responsive, and efficient at their jobs. I was in and out of the office in about 45 minutes.The customer service was amazing, as they gave me a duplicate copy of my invoice for my FSA claim; and when I called regarding the need to get a vision test sent to the DMV for my license renewal, they were happy to go ahead and submit it for me. Also, I was so glad that they were open on Saturdays, which is a much more convenient day to get appointments and errands done. I highly recommend them. read more

I really don't understand the low reviews here... I just got a pair of reading glasses from Union Square Optical as well as an eye exam with Dr. Louis Sarantakos, and I couldn't be more pleased! The exam was quick, professional, and thorough. At the same time, I really felt comfortable and cared for by both Dr. Sarantakos and Ms. Angelica Arseno, who is the lovely optical stylist that helped me find the perfect pair of frames for my new reading glasses! Glasses are not cheap and I am a college student, so going to get reading glasses is something I put off for a while. Ms. Arseno was so kind and patient in helping me find the right pair of frames; she didn't just offer me the fanciest/most expensive pairs, but rather, she showed me a great variety of frames all very reasonably within my budget. I felt that she was genuinely most concerned with choosing the right pair for me that I would feel best in - and she did! What a nasty and snobby place! Another eye glass store referred me to this shop because they told me it had a lab and might be able to fix my glasses. So, I go in and the rudest clerk who could NOT be bothered just looked down her nose at my glasses and said, "we don't do that"..and refused to refer me to anyone. Couldn't she tell me to check the internet for someone who repairs eye glasses?? So rude. No help whatsoever. All she wants me to do is buy new glasses. So I left. Then, I went to Cohen's Fashion Optical across the street and they were so nice and helpful and friendly. I ended up buying another pair of glasses even though I had no intention to do so when I left the house. I felt like recreating the PRETTY WOMAN moment when Julia goes into the snotty store that rebuffed her and waves the sales receipt letting them know they lost out big time. But, in the end I went home. SKIP THIS STORE. RUDE. They will not help you when your glasses break they will treat you like trash if you aren't buying and even if you are going in to see frames they give you attitude and start sighing when you ask to try on more frames than they feel are necessary. read more

I had an excellent experience with Union Square Optical. The staff was friendly and well-receptive to my questions. They were accommodating to me, despite being busy at the time. And my glasses turned out awesome. I even popped in the next day to get them adjusted and they made it easy for me to get-in and get-out in minutes. If I had one complaint about the shop, it would be that all the frames are under glass. I prefer being able to just walk around and try them on myself. But, I can understand why they're set up the way they are - especially given how busy the area is. I'd gladly visit them again for any future eyewear needs. read more

Two stars because Dr. Sarantakos is great, friendly and fast and helpful when you ask questions. But the staff at this optometrist are probably among the worst I've ever interacted with at a medical office. They're incredibly rude and unhelpful, both on the phone and in person. Every interaction I've had, I've felt like they were just trying to rush me away, not truly help me with questions or issues. The woman I tried to book an appointment with over the phone was abrupt and unhelpful with my insurance questions. When I was in the office for my exam, I felt like the staff couldn't be bothered to help or even look at me unless I was wearing fur/diamonds and interested in buying 3 pairs of Chanel frames. When I arrived, the receptionist acted like I was inconvenicning HER by asking to check in. When I came back to pick up the (very expensive) contacts I'd ordered, despite not getting a phone call as promised, the woman behind the counter gave me so much attitude and sarcasm when I asked about not getting a call, it soured me off this place for good. The doctor is good, but the annoyance of visiting the office is absolutely not. I'm sure Cohen's Optical across the street will give you a better experience than this place. read more

I showed up at 10:07 - 2 minutes after their "strict 5 minute grace period" and they wouldn't see me. Doctor Louis Sarantakos was nice and efficient. I was seen quickly and out in under an hour. However... I purchased a pair of name brand sunglasses and after purchasing noticed the vendors pricing was lower than what I paid by nearly $100. When I asked about the price difference the woman at the counter said that it's typical for retail stores to sell for more than vendor depending on what their contract is with the vendor. Sounds very fishy and doesn't make much sense. It's disappointing that they jack up prices but offer discounts to make you think you're getting a deal. If you plan on visiting, know the prices of what you're looking for so that can be your starting point. They also do not price match for contact lenses. read more

I made a last minute appointment on Zocdoc with Dr. Sarantakos for a routine eye checkup. The visit was seamless, thorough and Dr. Sarantakos did a great job answering my questions and providing a suggestion for an OTC allergy eye drop (to replace my outdated prescription eye drop). I was prescribed reading glasses which I decided to deal with at their location. I was extremely pleased with the help I received selecting a frame that fit my criteria. I'm about ten days I got a text message that my glasses are ready. When I picked them up and wore them for a couple of days I realized that something is off and they're giving me a headache. I discussed my concern with the representative at their store who looked into the matter for me in a timely fashion and replaced the lens in a matter of couple of days. I am loving my reading glasses and my eyes love me for that. I am extremely delighted with Union Square Optical service and will definitely go back to them. read more

I'm only giving them 1 star because I can't give zero. The customer service here is beyond terrible. My eye exam was pleasant enough and the doctor did spend a lot of time working with my prescription, which is difficult. One of the guys who works there and checks people in can barely manage a grunt. After being told I would get a call when my contact lenses were in, I left. I received said phone call -- at my office, which I told them NOT to call unless they couldn't get me on my cell -- which they didn't call. When I stopped in to get the contacts, they "verified" the order (mind you, this is 3 business days AFTER they told me they were in) -- turns out they ordered the wrong ones. No explanation about why they didn't check this before. I was assured that they would order me new ones and call me when they were in -- I requested they call my cell. After a week, I got a phone call -- AGAIN on my office phone. The message left stated "Your contacts are in. You can come pick them up anytime now." I again went in and waited for 10 minutes before anyone acknowledged my presence. Then I was told I actually couldn't have my contacts -- that a doctor needed to be present to see which one of the 3 sets they ordered fit. So I made an appointment to come back. On the morning of my appointment, I called Union Square Optical and asked if it was possible to move my appointment due to a scheduling conflict -- they had a time available that didn't work, so I told them I wanted to keep my appointment time and re-arranged my other events. I arrived 15 minutes early and NONE of the 4 people working there acknowledged my presence. I sat down, planning to wait until I was called. 5 minutes before my appointment I see my eye doctor -- and she calls in someone else. This other person's friend says "How long will she be?" and was told "At least half an hour." I waited until 5 minutes after my appointment time and asked what the status of my appointment was. I was told I would be checked in and the appointment would only take 5 or 10 minutes. I asked if there was going to be a delay because I had just seen the eye doctor take in another patient and was told "I don't know." After 2 minutes, they told me that it would be around 20 more minutes. 20 more minutes -- making it half an hour AFTER my scheduled appointment, that I confirmed that morning!! I told them that I would be back on Monday to pick up my prescription and that I would not be paying for the contacts they ordered but did not give me. Rude, unprofessional staff. Wrong orders. Not calling me as requested. Confirming an appointment with me and then not being able to keep it. Complete inconsideration of my time. I get better customer service from the bodega on the corner and they aren't providing healthcare and making tons of money off me. I will never go back here again and will join my friends who have sworn off Union Square Optical in favor of more affordable, more professional environments. read more

Good selection of frames...all overpriced! Two of the salesmen, one apathetic towards helping me, and the other a used car salesman type who was pushy. I shopped around different stores and the rest were cheaper for same frames that USO sells. Also, I had an eye exam here and the doctor seemed nice, until she told me she doesn't have time to dilate my eyes and that I need to return (and pay an extra $70!). I got a standard eye exam and took the prescription to Warby Parker, here is why. 1. I asked for water and was told no. How weird is that? I had to leave to get water and come back. Not much for customer service. 2. The energy of the place was so negative. The staff was really quiet and depressing. No one was interested in showing me the glasses. I was ready to pick a pair and use my insurance to cover it yet the lack of enthusiasm or interest was making me uncomfortable. You will note this same trend in other reviews btw. 3. The selection was limited and very expensive. The frames were a bit dated and there were not many pairs under $300 dollars. The exam/optometris was good--he seemed reasonable and competent. The frame selection was very nice, however the prices were higher than most other stores and the store clerks in general were not very helpful and friendly. Last time I went I got both contacts and frame/lenses and was kinda "manhandled" while the guys rang up the total .....by this I mean he added on many expensive fees to the bill although I had a vision plan. I could have argued with him on the spot but everything and the eye exam was already completed, and I did not have any time or enery to go somewhere else and still used my vision plan allowance. The frame/lenses also were not ready on time as promised. So becareful and know exactly what they are charging you there!! read more

I agree with many of the other reviewers--the optometrist is very nice, but the people at the front desk are snotty. I've dropped so much money here over the last several years and just tolerated it, but the last straw was when I called last week to order more contacts and was told that the "FDA requires an exam once a year before we're allowed to order more lenses for you." Um, no, the FDA doesn't regulate exams, only devices--I confirmed this both on the FDA website and by e-mailing the FDA directly. I was three weeks past the year mark. If it's your policy, fine, but don't lie to me and don't make it difficult for me to get what I need. I just got back from an appointment with my new optometrist. read more
