This is the worst company ever . We hired Gable to remodel our kitchen. They were very late every day and left early , they were very very messy, leaving nails everywhere daily. I had to clean up after them daily. They broke a pipe and flooded our house, drilled holes in wrong places on cabinets and tried to hide them . The list is long of horror. Our floor is popping up and has huge craters. Its been 13 months and Gable promised to fix it but now he's not answering our calls . We are now going to start paper work to sue him and going to call 3 on your side. DO NOT USE THESE PEOPLE ! Oh yes, and they are always wanting payments before use faze is completed. DO NOT USE THIS BUSINESS for roofing. The company they contract for roofing work does substandard work. I had work done to repair my roof 2 years ago and for the past 2 years, everytime it rains, I have to call them back because the leak from my ceiling continues. The other problem is the responsiveness. There isn't any. Neither this company nor the roofing contractor returns calls. Once I had to leave daily voice messages for 3 weeks at UHE. No one ever did call me back. I just got lucky once and someone actually answered the phone. What a nightmare! Save yourself the stress and use someone else. read more

Sat, Nov 6, 2010 @ ~5:30 PM. Just had an unrequested door-to-door solicitation from "Mike" representing United Home Exteriors. My girlfriend was at the front door painting it, and had it halfway open. Mike approaches and before he can start his spiel, she politely informs him that she's not interested. Not taking "no" for an answer, Mike starts into his pitch, at which time my girlfriend interrupts him by saying "look, I'm tired, I'm painting, I'm not interested." Mike, still undeterred, is now becoming belligerent, which is when I arrive at the door. I asked him who he is representing, and he said "here, I'll give you my brochure." I continually asked him to leave, and he continually became more & more belligerent. I told him that this was our property, and he was already asked to leave, and that if he didn't, the cops would be called. He said to "go ahead & call the cops." Sensing my growing frustration, he finally wised up and decided to start backing away from our door. However, even when walking off our property, he continued to be very hostile, belligerent, verbally abusive, and unprofessional. I do not know what kind of company United Home Exteriors is, they could be a very good company. However, I do know that the person soliciting door-to-door for them was wholly unprofessional and very hostile. Please be aware of "Mike" if he comes to your house, he will refuse to leave & is very hostile - I am actually scared to think of what he would've done had I not been there and my girlfriend was the only person at home!!! BEWARE!!! EDIT - UPDATE: 11/10/2010 - After calling the company to file a complaint with the secretary, I was called back by "Dave" (whom I believe is either the owner, or a high level manager). Dave & I spoke for about 10 minutes, during which time I reiterated my experience with Mike. Dave assured me that he would speak with Mike & reprimand him & warn him. I told Dave I didn't want to ruin Mike's livelihood or otherwise do anything to harm him or have him lose his job, but I did feel that perhaps some more training in how to handle customers who aren't interested would be in order for Mike. Dave was very professional, polite, and concerned that a representative of his would behave in such a manner, and assured me this wouldn't happen again. I informed Dave that, based upon his handling of the situation, I would still consider using United Home Exteriors in the future. Again, I'm sure they are a good company, it's just the old adage "one bad apple" scenario... It is because of this conversation that I am changing my review from "one" star to "two" stars (I still have not actually used or hired United Home Exteriors, but I feel that Dave showed the utmost professionalism in handling the situation with Mike, so I increased the rating based solely on my conversation with Dave). read more

My parents recently had their home painted. The home looked beautiful, and things were masked well. However, their clean up was sub par. My dad asked about spots of paint in multiple places and was assured it'd be taken care of. His new garden hose had paint on it, their back yard gate, the concrete around the pool, even tile around the spa. They are happy with the house paint, but very displeased with clean up- or lack there of. read more

When I contracted with United Home Exteriors to replace the windows in my home, I was provided with a lifetime warranty for the windows and the installation. A few years later, one of the windows failed and I called George to see about a warranty replacement. I was told, sorry, the window manufacturer went out of business, so no more warranty. Apparently a lifetime warranty doesn't mean lifetime of the home owner, it means until the manufacturer goes out of business or files bankruptcy. He told me that what he'd be willing to do was to put in a new window at his cost with no labor charge, and quoted me a price. I asked George to come out and take the measurements and look at the failed window, and he gladly gave me a day and time, but when the day came, no call, no show. After waiting some time past the appointment, I sent George a text to see if he was still coming, and he replied no, and that he probably should have called, but had no cell signal, which I thought was odd since he was able to reply to my text message. He told me that I should take the measurements and send them to him along with a photo, and he'd order the window. I told him that I didn't want to do that because what if the window didn't fit right, who would be responsible? I also told him that I wanted to talk to him because I might like to have a window manufactured by someone who was actually likely to be around for a few years in case I ever needed warranty work again. He told me that a window by Anderson or Milgard would be minimally twice the cost that he quoted me. He then told me that he would prepare an estimate for a couple of different window manufacturers and get it off to me, but, he never did. After I realized I wasn't going to hear from him, I hired a different window company, and I'm very pleased with my new Milgard window which was NOT twice the price of George's estimate at all, as a matter of fact, it was almost exactly the price he quoted me that was supposed to be "his cost" with no labor charge. read more

This company comes of as sketchy to me. I am an avid Yelp user when it comes to hiring contractors for remodel work. However, this company couldn't be found easily. They are at every event in the bay area with their tent set up under the name "United" but are now going by "United Constructors, Inc." However, they are listed as "United Home Exteriors" under Yelp?? Why so many different names? After giving into their high pressure sales pitch of "we do it all," Cash came out & gave us a quote on a few various home projects. We thought it was odd that he didn't take any measurements, but just looked at what we wanted & pulled a random number out. He used high pressure sales tatics & my husband signed a contract, to basically lock in this rate. The contract also states that we have 3 days to cancel or we owe 10%. Then they informed us after we signed the contract, we were to drive out to some warehouse in West Oakland to pick out the materials to have delivered to our home & they would show up at some point to do the work. What kind of company makes their customers pick up materials? In addition, I checked their reviews under Houzz & noticed (through small talk) almost if not all the reviews were the same names as family members that had been mentioned & all were 5 star reviews. I'm sorry no company is that perfect. I called back the next day & cancled. We now avoid the vultures under that blue tent whenever we see them. read more

Anytime I have to deal with contractors, I usually cringe! Dealing with scams, price gauging and shoddy work! United Home Exteriors is not the norm! I have used them 4 times now for a full exterior and trim paint job, new gutters, a roof renovation and most recently, a roof tune-up! Each time, their quotes are the lowest, they do not increase after the work is done, they are prompt, and meticulous. I am extremely happy with their quality of work and their service! They are also ridiculously prompt! 8 am appointment and they are on the roof by 7:59 am! They respect your schedule and your home! I highly recommend Gabe and his Team! read more

I had United Home Exteriors replace 3 windows and a sliding glass door in my home. I am a new home owner and had no idea what to expect when I was looking for replacements. I began to try to look for quotes through online window websites. UHE was the only company out of 4 requests for quotes that even responded. They came out to my home, showed me my options and worked with me to get the windows replaced well within my budget. The windows were not finished in the original time estimated during the original meeting which led me to begin to question the outcome and my decision to go with the company. These thoughts were quickly disbanded as the owner called me directly to explain the disconnect and ensure delivery install at the new time and personally apologize and make amends for the delay. The installers came and worked very diligently and did a great job finishing the install. I cannot speak highly enough of the great customer service and how nice the people at this company were. From the installers, to the owner, everyone was extremely nice and guaranteed a high quality finished product despite timing setbacks. Definitely would use this company again. read more

I used this company for the installation of my windows at my home. At first they looked fantastic no complains now that some time has passed since the installation I noticed after the rain that two of my windows are leaking. I called the owner who sent over one of his installers and he sealed them and shared with my wife that the install was not done incorrectly. I asked the owner what are we going to do about the dry rot that was caused to my trim around my windows? He has since been asking for copies of my paper work and putting the blame off on one of his installers who is also avoiding fixing the damage caused to my home. BUYER DEFINITELY BEWARE!!! We met some representatives from United Home Exteriors at a car show. I asked them to call us to give us an estimate. My husband just took it upon himself to tear up our backyard from the weeds and sparse grass we had....but then we weren't sure what we wanted. Jose from UHE, came over and he gave us a few ideas. He really considered what needs we have with young kids. We wanted a flat surface, some pavers, some walking path, not really sure which would be better. So he proposed a combination of the two. It turned out beautifully. We could not have asked for a nicer looking backyard. He practically came in and out of our lives in less than a week and our backyard is 100% improved. Absolutely horrible. We hired Gable and his firm for a few projects around the house; install a pocket doggy door and install a barn door and a few others. His guys put the doggy door in but left the interior completely open to the outside without insulation or plywood. We could feel cold air coming in so we hired another handy man to come take a look. He was mortified. I sent the pictures to Gable and he admitted "it's missing insulation or plywood". Um yeah. He told us he had ordered the barn door in mid November. After months of asking for the status, he admitted he had never ordered it. When I told him we would find someone else to complete the work I asked for my house key back. He said he lost it and would pay for a locksmith to change our locks. We had that done and sent him the receipt....but have never heard from him again. We've hired a handful of general contractors at a few different houses, United Home Exteriors and United Constructors were the worst. I raised my eyebrow when Gable's business card had a different company name than the order form. Stay away from these guys. Very poor quality work and dishonest. Gable doesn't respond to calls or texts, it's very frustrating. I read Gable's reply to a negative review on Yelp: "I have tried to contact this person. They will not respond back to us. I have tried to contact yelp and it is impossible." Gable, this is how your customers feel when you ignore them. read more

The salesman George was good to work with; the painters were great; but the office was not. Change orders right from the start for work that both the salesman and the field Supervisor said would be included. Then they acted like we were unreasonable for declining and told their painters to do less work and get out of there. Fortunately both George and the painters were unwilling to do shoddy incomplete work so the project was done to our satisfaction. I will not call them again though. read more

My Partner and I met Jerry Payne at one of the Home Builder shows in 2004 - at that time we were at the tail end of a huge remodeling project on our home in San Ramon - Needless to say money was tight. Mr Payne worked with us to develop an affordable solution which included United Home Exteriors, replacing all windows and patio door, replacing the garage door, installing a new front door and painting the entire house. Years later, I'd still ike to say thanks for working with us to get the job done and to anyone considering using this company, I can tell you that the work was flawless. A Pain to Deal With!!! I recently contracted United to paint my home and replace the gutters, based on the Yelp reviews, their BBB rating, and their connection with another contractor that I have high regard for. Unfortunately, I did not choose wisely. I have to say that the final job was acceptable, but getting there was very painful. First of all, I never knew when they were going to show up, since they usually did so unannounced. Rain caused some delays, but their equipment sat in my yard for a few very nice days, with no work done. The carpentry work I requested for my baclony was done wrong and had to be re-done. Then the painters showed up one morning and got started. I ended up with paint on my air conditiioner cover, which I removed, and asked them to cover it with a tarp. Then I ended up with paint on the air conditioner. They did clean the paint off of both, but I somehow even ended up with paint on the back of a fence that is about ten feet from the house. As for the gutters, they forgot to remove two of the old downspouts, which sat there for over a week until the painters finally removed them. And they left several shards of metal behind, which I picked up before my grandchildren found them. The biggest problem throughout was communication. I asked Jerry, the owner, for a Kelly Moore paint chart twice, and the paint foreman once, but ended up having to get it myself. I pointed out dirt on the chimney that needed to be removed, and they painted over it. They asked me what color to paint the fascia board; I said white, and they painted it red. The gutter guys ran out of material and left without telling me, leaving me and Jerry wondering why I was missing a gutter, because they hadn't told him either. In general, when I told Jerry about a problem he just gave me a vague look and said he would take care of it. But that always took time and persistent nagging. Everything came to a head on the day that the painting was finished. Jerry first told me that the foreman would be back and inspect the job with me so that he could finish the "punch list". I ran an errand, only to find out that Jerry had returned and asked my wife for the check, without the final inspection. I was left with two large trellised bushes hanging off of my garage. From then on, it got really hard to get them to finish, and I kept finding things that were not done or done wrong. Jerry stopped answering my calls, and I ended up threatening to file a complaint with BBB three times in 24 hours. Instead of responding, he just had the paint foreman show up unannounced to finally finish the job. He also showed up later and acted like nothing was wrong. If you work at home like me and have plenty of time to nag them to get things done right, then you might want to use them. Otherwise, you might want to think twice. read more

United home was AWESOME !!!! I own a cafe and was looking to update and remodel. I contacted United , they came the same day gave me a quote that beat the other company i was looking at . I agreed to use United, they were there the next day prepping and talking to me about the time table I had (which they worked with very well, considering this had to be done while i was closed) The next night they were there and tearing into the job at hand. Carpet, wall repair, plumbing , painting and doors . Done PERFECT in less then a week . I only had to close for a couple hours. I recently needed help building a large shed. I went online and found UHE. They finished the shed and it looks great and the price was right. Shortly thereafter I needed to paint the exterior of my house, fix up an interior room and paint it, straighten out some old plumbing and electrical work. I contacted United Home Exteriors. I had United remove popcorn from several rooms and put up crown molding. They did a good job, HOWEVER, I would not recommend this company because they were consistently late and not prepared for job. . Example 1 -workers were scheduled to show up between 8:00 & 9:00 am. They arrived at 10:30 and then had to run to Kelly Moore for supplies, which took another 11/2 hours! Meanwhile I'm waiting around! Day 2- Promised to be here at 9:00 am , showed up at 10:30. Promised to have the ceiling textured and painted and the whole mess (entire back of house enclosed in plastic on a Friday and I have company coming tonight) by 6:30. They didn't finish until 8:30pm. Again didn't estimate time to perform job and were running back and forth to another job in between working on mine. Day 3- Showed up at 10:30 with the wrong molding (less expensive) then left for a few hours to try to find the correct material. There are so many companies who appreciate their customers time and can show up when scheduled, plus have all of the materials they need, I would never use this comapany again. read more

If I could give negative stars I would. They never finished the job. After paying several thousand dollars we had to finish painting our own house. Painters took 3 weeks to complete what we were told would be a 5-10 day job. Come to find out they didn't even have a ladder and borrow a ladder from my neighbor. Then left it laying on our lawn after they were done and didn't even return it. The paint was already peeling from walls within 1 yr. One of the Installed windows leaked and we had to pay someone else to make repairs. Workers no showed on county inspector 3 times. They did not respond to calls regarding the multiple issues with the work that was done. Worst contracting experience I've ever had. I hope nobody else has to go through this awful experience. I'm told this was a very reputable company until the original owner retired. Save yourself the hassle and don't deal with them. read more

I used the email option on their website to request an estimate. I also included my cell number as a contact. As I don't answer phone calls from numbers not in my address book, I rely on callers to leave a vm and I will return the call. This company never left a vm. The same number rang through a week after my email on two different occassions. No vm. I returned the call anyway to find out it was in response to my quote. We set the appointment for the following Monday at 4:30. At 4:15 I noticed the same number again rang through with no message. The estimator was 20 minutes late. Not a big deal to me. He walked around my house, and just blurted out a number that sounded like a canned response. Not even giving me something in writing until I asked. I then asked him for references where I can look at his work. He promised me that info the next day. Four days later I'm still waiting. Needless to say...with everything added up, I will not be calling this guy back! read more

To the first review for UHE, yes this had to be a 'one bad apple' scenario. I first met Jerry Payne in 2004 at a Home Expo at the then Concord Pavillion. We were at the tail end of a remodel on our home in San Ramon. He came to our house and gave my partner and I a very reasonable quote for windows, garage door, front door install and a paint job on the house. I never had the opportunity to publicly thank him (no Yelp in 2004) for all the help he provided, nor to say what an amazingly quick and professional job was done. Fast forward to 2012, we're in another house ( c1970 and pretty much original) and need it painted, garage door, some interior work, etc. I obtained estimates from various contractors and Home Depot's RedBeacon. I also called UHE again and scheduled an appointment with Michele Payne-Solomon. Let me say that Michele has an eye for detail and is amazing to work with. All estimates in and they ended up being the least expensive for all the work that was to be done. Not by a huge margin, but the least just the same. The first order of business was to install a new garage door and opener. Because of the 'raised ranch' design of this house it was pointed out that we would have to install a side mount LiftMaster opener as the old install was done incorrectly. I don't know that exact model of this garage door opener, but let me say that it is virtually silent in operation and has really cool features like the motion detector that turns on the garage light when you walk in (that's standard by the way) - do not buy one of those typical overhead types, they are not worth the install. It was installed to perfection. Second item was the plumbing and electrical inside, again done to perfection. Then the house was painted and not an easy task due to design. What an amazing difference can't believe the updated look and again done to perfection. A shame I can't post a before and after pic on Yelp, but plan to post on their F page, if you're interested in looking. Michele makes a point of visiting the job daily and walking the property to assure that nothing is missed. Bottom line is, thse folks have been in business a long time, know what they are doing, have a friendly professional staff and do a beautiful job on everything they touch.
