Walking into this place, you get the immediate sense that whatever is supposed to be happening here has long since stopped. There's an almost impressive level of dysfunction--like everyone collectively agreed to lower expectations and then just kept going.. They have got four or five people on staff; which sounds promising until you realize only one of them is ever actually working. The rest rotate between hanging out in the back, listening to music loudly enough to echo through the building, and pretending there isn't a line forming up front while staring into their phones. There are multiple desks, multiple offices--everything you'd need to run an efficient operation--except for the actual brain power to do it. If you have even the simplest question, forget the phone, they will not answer. You have to physically show up, stand in line, and wait for the lone employee while the rest of the staff treat the place like a break room with occasional customers interrupting their day. Packages are continuously marked for delivered by drivers too lazy to finish the route for the day. Those packages are then prone to getting lost because they become untraceable once marked this way. On the plus side, if your career goals include doing the absolute minimum while actively avoiding helping people, this might be your dream workplace. It's the perfect environment for anyone committed to mediocrity, where initiative is optional and accountability appears to be completely nonexistent. I have only had great service at this usps location over the past year, including help by the incredibly nice worker to stamp thank you cards when no one else was at location. The employees wear a lot of hats there but do so with grace. Thank you for your service! read more

This was solely an in-person experience but damn was it amazing and seamless. I went in on a Friday early afternoon and was in-n-out within ten minutes. The doors into the building are automatic so it was nice not having to touch countless door handles. The staff at this location were super, super sweet. Going to this post office in person is not so bad. There is usually no line and the people that work here are nice. However, this post office delivers the worst overall mail service I've ever experienced in my entire life. I'm lucky if I get mail once a week. A magazine subscription I have arrives 2 to 3 weeks late. Once I even received three separate issues on the same day, as if someone decided to finally deliver my mail after a long vacation. It is also impossible to reach this post office by phone. I have tried on multiple occasions to track packages or have redelivery service from this post office, to absolutely no avail. I suspect the mail service for this entire city is terrible, but I can only speak to this one post office. Again, it's not so bad if you just need to buy stamps. But if you expect to receive mail in a timely matter, you're going to be out of luck. read more

At first I was so glad to see a post office so close to my new house in Bywater. But there is only over one woman working "Jackie"... she is the slowest human being on the planet. This morning I showed up at 9am for when they opened, and in 30 minutes she has only been able to ring up 2 customers. The line is out the door (as is her usual). I'm in here atleast once a week. She always "apologizes" for the wait, but she does nothing to ever speed up the process. I would rather drive an extra 10 minutes to go to the one on Tulane, because there is NEVER a wait like this. I'm absolutely clueless when it comes to mail. I never mail packages, or buy stamps, or anything else like that. I use the internet. Cluelessness aside, I like this post office. They were very helpful last week. It was right before Christmas and I expected chaos. There wasn't. After waiting in a small line the clerk helped me with everything. To everyone that is as oblivious to protocol as me, apparently you're supposed to pack the packages before you bring them? Who knew? The clerk wasn't even mad (and to my surprise she didn't laugh in my face, either!) She kindly sent me to the work station and told me to bring her the boxes when I was through. Have been attempting calls since 12pm no answer. Went in personally around 12:30pm. Metal curtain down for who knows how long. It's approximately 2:35pm at the time of this review, metal curtain still down. I've witnessed at-least 30-50 people enter and immediately leave due to no employees available. Their is no notice on the door or in the building detailing changes of working hours or delays. No answer from any phone calls. Place needs new management. Who ever is currently in charge should be fired immediately. read more

There are serious organizational problems and incompetence at this location. I am constantly having to retrieve packages from this location because they simply are not delivered. Half the packages that are delivered have holes busted in them because an employee definitely open them up and looked inside. The employees here couldn't be more apathetic. This experience drove me to write a review. I hate to start off with a negative one but it was that bad. I am new to the area and thought it would be a good idea to open a P.O Box. I read the other bad reviews but I am new to the area and don't know my way around. This is the closest post office to where I am staying so I gave it a shot anyway. Seriously, I know I am getting sensitive at my old age but damn. They were so mean! Like blatantly shook their heads in disgust and frustration because I didn't have a piece of paperwork that was needed. Comments like "Well, what are we supposed to do about it." or "You can't go nowhere else and get it printed". I went and got said paperwork and came back and someone else helped me. She finished the transaction and handed me the receipt and walked away. No explanation of what my p.o box number was...where to go...etc Obviously I was able to figure it out but sheesh. This is hands down the best post office I've ever been to. I buy and sell musical equipment fairly regularly and rely on this post office all the time. Let's face it the U.S. postal service dosen't have a great reputation, and public services in New Orleans are often awful at best. However, the Bywater station post office is a shining exception to this rule. Has my mail ever been lost? Yes. Has a package I've sent ever not reached its destination. Yes? Is the line long in the post office during obvious peak hours? Yes. However, sending and receiving packages at even a medium volume will always illicit some small percentage of loss, regardless of the carrier. Furthermore, it is unclear whether the very few instances of lost mail or lost packages were actually in any way the fault of this post office. On a positive note: The mailmen from this post office are excellent. They always hide packages and try not to leave them places where they may be stolen. Everything that is not currently locked down at our house and is outside has been stolen. Some things that were locked down have also been stolen. This is one of the many hidden costs of the crime and poverty that plague New Orleans. Yet, because of the extra effort of the mail carriers I have only ever had one package stolen. This is frankly amazing. The post office workers are extremely nice and helpful. They have managed to direct multiple packages to me that were mailed to the wrong address or no address. They are always extremely nice and friendly, despite the fact that I know they put up with both regular and added New Orleans level post office bullshit on an hourly basis. In spite of all this they have helped me rewrap poorly wrapped packages, given me advice on how to save money when shipping, gone above and beyond to help me track down lost packages, and saved me thousands of dollars with shipping advice, hiding packages, and finding lost packages. It would be nice if the post office were open later or extended hours. For people with 9-5 day jobs this post office is almost unusable as the Saturday hours are short and lines are usually very long. I'm not sure how to get the hours extended but I'm fairly certain the answer lies at the federal level. Also, if you want to experience the true kindness, strong work ethic, and general hospitality of the clerks and other mail staff don't be a dick. They work at the post office, if you fuck with them or are in anyway a jerk, the outcome will generally be very unpleasant for you. read more

This is one of the strangest post offices I have ever been to. Not only is it extremely unevenly staffed (sometimes five workers, sometimes one - with no apparent logic), but they also close at 4pm on weekdays. It is the closest station to my house so I have to come here relatively frequently (2-3 times per month), and while the line can be intimidating at times, even when short staffed it does tend to move relatively quickly. On the plus side, parking is plentiful and I've never had trouble finding a space (though at times it can be challenging to get into the lot during rush hour when the traffic to/from the lower 9th ward is heavy). read more

Although this post office is very near to my home home, I never have the opportunity to visit it because it has the most inconvenient hours. It's only open for a few hours but I have visited the inside once and it was packed with people trying to send packages off, postage stamp, or check their mailboxes. The area doesn't exude safety. It's really shame that the post office isn't available for a longer length of time. I can't blame this location for the shortened time frame of hours because it USPS throughout the country have shortened their hours. I will say that this post office has the strangest location. I just find it weird that it's located right at the foot of the Claiborne bridge. It looks like it was thrown their by architects without much thought. So when you are driving you have to be super careful to avoid a car accident on Poland Avenue entering and exiting the location. read more

You're stuck. Congress has mandated that the USPS pre-fund its pensions for 75 years so service is taking a hit, hours are being cut nationwide and post offices are being closed. This is another example of that gutting of a national public service. They've cut the hours of this PO from 9-3 M-F (10-2 Saturday) and there is no machine in the lobby with which to send a package. Because of course that would make sense. Sadly, not much makes sense in USPS world. Micromanagement by Congress and long entrenched bureaucracies (have you ever tried to reach a real person at the post office? It's nigh on to impossible unless you know their secret phone number). It's not the fault of the people who work there. They're generally very nice, but when you walk in at 3:01 and they say "sorry we're closed" and you say "please can you take this package?" and the clerk replies with a shrug "No we're closed." It's a shame that the people of the 70117 zip code are forced to rely on the competence of this post office location for their mail delivery. My package was sent out for delivery several days ago but a notice was left that the package could not be left at my doorstep because of not having a secure drop off location. So the next day I went to the post office where not only my package was NOT left but they had no way of tracking where it was, had no supervisor present to CALL the mail carrier, and despite leaving our phone number for the supervisor to call when they were in, they never called. We have waited in line 30+ minutes every day for the last three days just trying to figure out if our package was there yet. And of course they have not updated the tracking number about any changes whatsoever, so there's no telling where my package is. Literally the worst effing post office in the existence. Satan himself wouldn't even use this place, that's how horrible their service is. They said my home was vacant and an undeliverable location. When I met with the mail person they argued with me when proving it was a deliverable location because they still continue to put mail in my mail box, and she accused me of mail theft screaming that it wasn't a deliverable location as I walked back inside my spot. When I lived on France the mail routinely arrived at 7:30 p.m. My netflix discs were broken often. Worst of all the carriers are so damn lazy I have actually had my door open with the radio on low so that you know, someone is obviously there and still they just stick a "sorry we missed you" sticker on the door. This is my post office and I have been using it for a while. Every time I go, the lady is downright MEAN. it can't be from a long day, as I am usually in there before work because they close so early. I've also received misinformation from them several times about the whereabouts of my package. This post office has systematic issues. Today, I came in and they did not open the counter until 9:15am BUT when I pulled up and saw trucks leaving the building. Clearly, there were people in the building but they just did not open the lobby. In addition, when I tried to retrieve my package(because they did not deliver to my address) they informed me that they returned it to sender because they could not read the exact address on the package. This is not the first time this has happened. The first package they only attempted to deliver once and when I came to pick it up at the post office they mentioned it was returned to the sender but did not have an explanation as to why they did not try to re-deliver the package. These were at TWO different home addresses but with the same results. When they finally opened today, they only had 1 customer service representative. This is the 3rd bad experience before I even left a review. Something has to change. read more

Excellent Customer Service I sent a package it was supposed to get there on Wednesday. The person who I sent it to didn't receive it on Wednesday. I called the Poland Avenue post office since I know that was the post office it would have originated from. I spoke to a very nice lady name Ms. Annette who placed me on hold but came back and assisted me. She was very helpful and assured me that she would check on the package and call me back. She did just that and transferred me another person who gave me a claim number in the event my package was lost. The person who I sent the package to called me after the post office had closed to say they received the package. At 6:30 p.m. New Orleans time Thursday, 7:30 p.m. my time I am in another state. I receive a call from the Ms. Annette at the post office to check to see if the person received the package. I told Ms. Annette that I was going to call on Friday morning to tell them the person received the package. The worst post office on earth. Apparently my apartment is on a side route that is mostly handled by substitute drivers. Theyve refused to deliver packages to me solely because the sub was too lazy to get out of his car and bring it to my door. Ive called them out on it over the phone and had them admit that the sub carrier had lied to me about not bringing my package. I should also mention that although i live a couple blocks away, my mail gets delivered between the hours of 3 and 6 pm (after the office is already closed) I wish this office would please improve its services or just close down.
