We went straight for the bubbly flight, and it was excellent! There's something so fun about being able to sample different sparkling wines while enjoying the beautiful surroundings. We also decided to make our own little feast out of the small plates, oysters, caviar, truffle bread, a gorgeous cheese platter and more. Seriously....if I could have taken these classes in college....I would have been class Valedictorian! First of all JD was so accommodating, we had a change in our schedule and he came in on an unscheduled night so we could have the class before leaving early the next morning. The Whiskey Attic is located about a 10 minute drive off the strip in a quiet more industrial area. I like to point these things out because I like to know what to expect when driving to unknown areas. We took an Uber and it was easy to get a car to and from the location. JD greeted us at the door and right away we picked up on his brilliance about everything from sports, history and Whiskey of course! Because we were the only two there for this course it was a nice date night but honestly this would have been fun to do as a party, business ice breaker, or just something different. We did the introduction course, and not only did we learn about whiskey but wines, beers, anything you could want to know. And because The Whiskey Attic isn't trying to sell you product, you get to learn about all varieties, countries, and regions without being pushed to a particular brand. JD walked us through how to taste whiskey and how to drink it! After our class, JD asked us a series of questions and chose a selection of 6 brands he though we would like (the place is beautifully full of whiskey and JD knows where every bottle is) and we commenced tasting his selections! He nailed my tastes down to a tee and I enjoyed every one of the sample! We definitely want to go to the more advanced class next time we are in Las Vegas. I feel much more confident about ordering whiskey when I am out and about knowing what I like because of this class! Loved meeting JD and am looking forward to our next visit!

With beer on tap and wine by the glass, plus plenty of tables to sit and hang out. The concept here is genius: they've got a fridge stocked with meats and cheeses right next to crackers, so you can literally build your own charcuterie board on the spot. There's usually a food truck parked outside too. You can also buy a bottle of wine, a case of beer, or a pack of seltzers, and they'll hold onto it for you and pour as you go. It's such a cozy, easygoing spot that we constantly lose track of time there, quite literally hours just disappear. The staff is friendly, accommodating, and knowledgeable every single time. It's become one of our favorite local spots, and it's always fun bringing new people who have no idea what they're walking into. Highly recommend! Such a great not so hidden gem.

The best part was he shared what food he thought would taste good with the wines. I probably tried three or four wines I had never heard of before in his class. UNLV Extension offered the classes; I would recommend them to the nascent or experienced wine aficionado.

We met several times over a 7 month period to prepare our wine. We'd make a party out of it each time. We each brought a bottle of wine and an appetizer to share. They have an area set up with tables for us to place it all. They provided us with wine glasses and pitchers of water. The staff is so knowledgeable about wine production and they did a great job explaining the process to us on each visit. On this particular visit, our wine was complete, so we were all part of the assembly line that got to bottle it up. We each took a case of wine home. Same goes for Skyy Vodka, Patron, Fiji Water, and a bevy of other beverages, seeing as SWS has 15,000 SKUs in their system. They distribute 75% of the beverages here in Nevada. Insanity. I went here for a tour this morning (6/1/11) on a hospitality purchasing field trip. I'm not sure the general public can get a tour, but regardless, the tour was great. It was mind-blowing to see the sheer volume of alcohol on hand in this place. Imagine how many Coronas, say, a casino might go through in a day - a lot right? Now multiply that by all the casinos. That's even more! Now add up all the grocery, warehouse and convenience stores that sell them... and then multiply that by 35-45 days. Yeah, SWS keeps between 35-45 days worth Nevada's consumption of Corona, in their warehouse. It's the craziest thing I've seen - the total number of Corona pallets are easily double the size of an average family home here in Vegas. They say everything is bigger in Texas, no. Everything in Vegas is bigger. Imagine 3 or 4 Costcos, turned into liquor refrigerators; that's what SWS is like. One "Costco" is at 58*F (+$10/bottle) and the other "Costco" is at 68*F (Less than $10 /bottle) I can't imagine their electric bills. As we (our class) ate flaxseed waffles, fruit salad and banana bread, made by the head chef at SWS (yum!) we listened to really friendly people from SWS tell us some cray-cray stories about the kinda stuff they go through to get high rollers some rare wines at the drop of a hat, the legal red tape (that most of us didn't know existed) of buying, selling and distributing alcohol in the US and how to secure and manage a place that's so imperative to the success of Las Vegas. If you have the chance to go here and listen to a presentation and go on a tour, DO IT! It was an eye-opening and interesting way to spend a few hours this morning.
