Great tasting experience! The assortment of bourbons was incredible! Worth a try if you are looking for something like this!

If anyone would have told me a year ago I would be writing a review on a Whiskey tasting....I would have told them they'd lost their vertical hold! But over the last year, I have discovered I like the taste of whiskey! Call it age....call it a more advanced palate....whatever you call it....mama likes! I never want to do things without educating myself, so what is a lady to do? Go to a class of course! Seriously....if I could have taken these classes in college....I would have been class Valedictorian! First of all JD was so accommodating, we had a change in our schedule and he came in on an unscheduled night so we could have the class before leaving early the next morning. The Whiskey Attic is located about a 10 minute drive off the strip in a quiet more industrial area. I like to point these things out because I like to know what to expect when driving to unknown areas. We took an Uber and it was easy to get a car to and from the location. JD greeted us at the door and right away we picked up on his brilliance about everything from sports, history and Whiskey of course! Because we were the only two there for this course it was a nice date night but honestly this would have been fun to do as a party, business ice breaker, or just something different. We did the introduction course, and not only did we learn about whiskey but wines, beers, anything you could want to know. And because The Whiskey Attic isn't trying to sell you product, you get to learn about all varieties, countries, and regions without being pushed to a particular brand. JD walked us through how to taste whiskey and how to drink it! After our class, JD asked us a series of questions and chose a selection of 6 brands he though we would like (the place is beautifully full of whiskey and JD knows where every bottle is) and we commenced tasting his selections! He nailed my tastes down to a tee and I enjoyed every one of the sample! We definitely want to go to the more advanced class next time we are in Las Vegas. For all whisky lovers and the curious. All the magic happens when you enter the door... Came here during my future bro-in-law's bachelor party weekend and we had a blast. From the moment we walked through the door, 'til the end of the tasting, it was a unique and fun experience! JD, out main tour guide for our tasting, was very friendly, entertaining and highly knowledgeable on whiskey. All the staff was great! Our tasting consisted answering a few questions then 10 whiskies based on those answers are chosen to taste. Among the ones that I tried, most were pretty good and was interesting to taste the subtle differences. A few were definitely not palette friendly for me. There is so many whisky "styles" out there, everyone can find something they like. This is the place to do it with out blindly trying full glasses at the bar or bottle in the stores. I hope to be back again to try out new whiskeys and experience this fun adventure again with more friends and family. Came searching for whisky and this place went above and beyond my expectation!! My boyfriend is a big whisky guy (hence our visit) and I'm a whisky noob but JD was welcoming, enlightening, and so sociable it took my worries about what I was drinking away. Not only that but the selections JD presented for us were great! He was super knowledgeable and engaging, so we didn't even notice how much time had passed. Would DEFINITELY RECOMMEND for a stop off the strip. We got a little lost on the way because there was construction at the time and we came in the evening. This was an awesome experience from start to finish. JD is a master of his craft and really does a great job curating the tastings to the people in the room. Rather than a brick and mortar tasting experience, JD came to our hotel suite and spent 2 hours talking about the history of whisky, the different styles, and did 8 different whiskeys based on each of our own separate likes and palates. Simply amazing. This was a recommendation by a good friend and I am so glad I listened to him! Just some basics for those that are interested: - Make reservations. Walk ins are not allowed, although if you show up when no one is there and make a 'reservation' they might be able to squeeze you in. - This isn't a bar or a store, this is an actual educational experience. You will learn about whisky and the history behind it. - You can do either 5 tastings or 10 tastings, and afterwards you can taste more/other kinds, but it will be an additional cost. - The cost per person for the 5 tastings is $75 - If you go with someone that is not drinking, they will still be required to pay $50 for the educational fee. - The guy we had, JP, is a wealth of knowledge and was incredibly awesome. Take advantage of his extensive background and ask lots of questions. You will learn a lot. - Have a designated driver or an Uber! Overall, I would go back in a heartbeat. There was a couple with us in our tasting that had been there before, so JP switched up that guys tasting so he didn't try something for a second time. If you have time in Vegas and you're over 21, give this place a try! This is a lot coming from me, because I don't usually care for whiskey. Actually, I usually avoid it given the opportunity. And to be honest, when I booked a tasting, I was slightly dreading it and had to mentally prepare myself during the day. BUT! I actually really enjoyed it! DJ was great and super informative. This guy really does know his stuff (or at least I felt like it, but what do I really know?) He went around the room and did a little survey of each of us to understand our pallets. To summarize: a truly fantastic and an informative journey. We booked the expansive tasting because we are new to whiskey. I like scotches and had yet to find a bourbon I liked. After our tasting, there were several bourbons that I LOVED. JD was a stellar guide and made us feel warm and welcome. Often in whiskey/high end drinking circles there is a bougie and uppity persona with professionals knowledgeable about spirits. But JD was personable and down to earth which was refreshing. JD was knowledgable of all things whiskey, from the laws and regulations to the amount of bottles sold and the processes used in different processes. I was impressed that JD incorporated information regarding laws governing whiskey (and I am an attorney.) Ultimately, it was the highlight of the trip and we will be returning anytime we are in vegas. read more

I came here upon the recommendation of a friend who said Adam (the owner) taught him how to taste whisky. So I signed both my hubby and I to the high roller experience for whisky tasting. We were led up a attic into a room full of whisky bottles from different countries of different kinds. This was kinda cool. JD and not Adam did the tour for us. He told a story about the history of taste, and gave us a brief history of the prohibition era. Interesting and cool story to hear. He also told us about some winery in pahrump where we could bottle our own wine with our own label which i thought was something I wanted to check out, but I couldn't find anything of the sort on the internet that did that. But i digress.. We were given 10 whisky's; some sweet, some peaty, some "smokey" and all different types. It was interesting and super cool to learn this new technique of tasting whisky, and it seems i got drunk after a couple of sips. My hubby who normally can tolerate his whisky had also had enough after the first round of tastings. It was a cool experience, but I dont think i would do it again. Boy did I learn so much from this place. It was well worth the $60 we paid for the 7 pour flight Whiskey tasting class. Chad, the instructor was very knowledgeable and down to earth. Never did I feel judged for being ignorant and all my life drinking Johnny Walker Black and Blue the wrong way. If you are ever in Las Vegas, do yourself a favor and stop by. It's like discovering new colors! Once you learn the tasting technique, you can apply it to all hard liqour. I now have a better ability to make a decision whether I like a certain alcohol or not! The room is amazing too! Can't wait to go back! After your tasting experience, you can head downstairs, catch one of the millions of beer they serve, and catch a live band. This is my review of the Whisky Attic - had it been my husband's it would have been a 5 star experience. Came here with a group for my husband's birthday. He didn't know what we were doing, only that it was related in some way with scotch. When I signed us up for this, I thought it was going to be a relatively straight forward whisky tasting and some education. We got a whole lot more than that - in terms of both whisky and non-whisky related information. JD was the "instructor" as he said the Whisky Attic is a school and the reason why their location looks the way it does. Quite frankly we missed it the first time and our driver had to turn back around. At night the area is COMPLETELY dark and hard to find. Once we were inside, I was like, wtf... where are we? I didn't get a sense of relief until we were IN the room with all the whiskys. It's a pretty impressive room and just that view got my husband excited. JD was pretty knowledgeable about whisky and the history relating to it, but at times he went off too much on tangents for me. He is also a bit too opinionated for me personally. While I think everyone is entitled to be opinionated, if you work with the public, its better to be a little more neutral in thoughts... just my two cents there. Anyway, the class and information was really interesting. What was weird was the tasting part of it with the hold in your mouth for some many seconds thing. LOL One of our group couldn't do it no matter how many times he tried. I thought the whiskys were interesting but I think it would be better if we all got the same ones just to have our own discussions of how we liked them, etc. Overall, I think this is a must do for whisky fans, but if you get JD, just be prepared for a little TMI. read more

Great idea to have a whisky tasting in your own home! A decent selection of whisky was offered for the tasting. The experience started on time and lasted 90 minutes; it may have been better if it was at just 60 minutes. We had to take some of the presentation with a grain of salt, and one suggestion I would offer is for the presentation to focus solely on the whisky and less on colloquial stories that may not come across well to tasting participants. I should have clarified the pricing before the tasting as well; it would have been less of a surprise. read more

Last year, a few friends and I had started a weekly routine of watching game of thrones and trying a different whisky every week. As a gift, our girlfriends decided to purchase us the "High Roller" package to The Whisky Attic. We were taken to a long room with A LOT of different whiskies. It was very cool to see. The room was very cold, I thought that this was some setting for keeping the whiskies at a certain temperature. Nope. Not a big deal, but just a warning that it can be a bit chilly inside. Our whisky guide was an interesting character named JD, who told us that his favorite whiskey was (not coincidentally), Jack Daniels. It turns out that JD and Jack Daniels whiskey have been associated since birth. You'll have to get the full story from him. Firstly, half of the experience was an educational presentation by JD, telling us about the history of whisky (also whiskey) in all parts of the world. Most of it was very interesting and I enjoyed it quite a bit. However, when he went into techniques for tasting the whisky, I felt like his ways were a little different. He said things that I found to be kind of strange. He seemed to be very dismissive of a lot of things that I had thought of as normal. He very highly discouraged you from smelling or "nosing" the whisky because it would essentially over stimulate your sense of smell and render it useless for the purpose at hand (I wish that I could remember the exact wording that was used). He also didn't want you to swirl the whisky within the class claiming that it did some damage at the molecular level. I felt like his explanations were kinda, to be honest, just subjective nonsense. Perhaps they weren't, but I was given this impression by his overall judgment of a lot of whisky-related and non-whisky-related topics. I would here things like "color doesn't matter because they all have dye in them" and "All the best whiskies are between $30-$90 per bottle. If you're paying more than that, you're paying for the name of just because it's an older whisky and not necessarily better". Basically, JD had lots of opinions, whisky and non-whisky related, and I was only interested in hearing a very objective and fact-based presentation on whisky. Secondly, the actual whisky tasting: We were asked a small number of questions to help JD assess what our whisky preferences might be. I felt like there was almost no way anyone could assess anything given what little information we gave. I think that the survey consisted of some 4 or 5 very simple questions. I think they were... 1) what whiskies do you like? 2) how spicy do you like your spicy food on a scale from 1 to 5 3) do you like butterscotch and chocolate 4) do you like fruity flavors Those are the ones that I remember. I think I may be missing one. We did try a variety of whiskies with many different flavor profiles and I did like most of them. One of the things that irritated me despite getting to try some interesting whiskies, was JD describing several of them as "this is a very good whisky" or some other subjective description. I really wish that JD would have given very specific details about all of the whiskies that we tried and what made them unique or special and why he chose these specific whiskies based on our questionnaire. After the third "it's a very good whisky" I was a little peeved. The experience was kind of cool, but came off as an educational novelty. When I discovered that they had some Pappy Van Winkle on hand I was a bit disappointed that I didn't try some. I would have loved to and JD said "You should have asked!" I wish that I had, it would have been pretty great if I had known that I could have requested certain whiskies. Overall, I can't knock the experience too much as JD was, for the most part, full of fun and factual information and a very nice guy. He was a bit much at times, but overall the experience was fun and informative. We did get to try a variety of whiskies. Some of which I didn't like at all and others that I liked fairly well. Only 2 or 3 I found to be very good. I think that the most enjoyable part of the class was the history behind whisky. Most people seem to enjoy the class very much and I must say that it was a very enjoyable experience. BOTTOM LINE: If you like whisky and would like to learn more about whisky and want to try different kinds of whisky, give it a shot. Also, if I were you, I'd look up some very specific whiskies that you would like to try and request that you try them specifically for the most enjoyable experience. read more

Terrific experience at the Whisky Attic. I got lucky, in that I accidentally specified the wrong date when I made the reservation. We called about 5 minutes before we showed up (on the day *we* had in mind), and JD very very graciously was able to accomodate us. All in all, everyone in my group was blown away by the experience. JD was a very knowledgeable instructor, and the tastings were generous and very interesting. All of us have a fair amount of whisky tasting (err, drinking?) experience, and yet everything was new and intriguing for us. We all came away feeling the experience was a great value, and look forward to maybe stopping by again next time we're in Las Vegas. read more

Wasn't expecting to be so entertained by what was essentially a crash course on whisky. First 45 minutes or so JD was telling us about the different kinds of whiskeys, fun facts, and also answered any questions we had. Then the last 45-60 minutes we were doing the tastings. He had a very particular way he wanted us to drink each whiskey to maximize its flavor. JD was extremely knowledgable and passionate about whisky making it fun! Anyone who has already taken this tour should appreciate my selection to spell whiskey differently throughout this review haha. Only change I would make is I would have liked to take home one of the taster glasses as a memento. But other than that, I have absolutely no complaints. read more

The bottom line is simple. I've brought about a half-dozen friends here who previously didn't enjoy whisky at all, and every one of them has become a whisky drinker since. If you're already a fan, you'll be delighted with what you learn and drink; if you currently find the idea of drinking 10 glasses of straight whisky to sound awful, you will be pleasantly surprised with the experience. When I first had a tasting, I had already been a fan and collector of scotch whisky for about 8 years. I was astonished at how much I learned here, and how much it expanded the range of whiskies that I love. Now, I've gone 5 times, and I'm still learning new things. You will leave the Whisky Attic with new knowledge that allows you to enjoy any liquor much more thoroughly and consistently. The value of this experience does not just come from the quality of whiskies that you get (though you will always get a good selection), but primarily from the tasting method that you learn. It's truly amazing. Adam and J.D. will give you a way to enjoy whisky tasting on your own, with no outside influence, discovering what you truly prefer, no matter what your preferences are. "Good" and "bad" are words you will never hear. The experience will not force anything on you. You will not be given tasting notes. You will learn how to taste and be free to taste whatever it is that your palate discovers. It's one of the most profoundly well-intentioned educational experiences I've ever had the privilege of enjoying. It will probably blow your mind how different are the various whiskies from one another. You will likely end up wanting to have a few bottles of your own for occasional sipping. Read about this place in Los Angeles magazine and had to check it out! My boyfriend and I both really like bourbon and the selection they have is amazing, from all over the world. We got a great education from JD and even discovered a new favorite. The tastings are done by appointment and are not cheap - but this is top-shelf stuff and worth it. Amazing experience. I came here with a group of 12 other guys for my bachelor party (we went with the $75 option) and we were all blown away. JD gave us an incredibly interesting lesson about the history of whiskey, the process of making it, and the urban legends and wives' tails that persist to this day but are mostly nonsense. It was thorough, but never boring, and all of us at the table learned a lot. The tasting, which is obviously the primary reason to go to The Whisky Attic, was outstanding. Adam's CSTEM method for tasting is no gimmick - in the middle of our first taste, every one of us at the table looked at each other, eyes wide in amazement. Suffice to say it'll change the way you drink and appreciate not just whisky, but other types of alcohol as well. While we all got to try some really incredible whiskey, perhaps the most enjoyable part was that we weren't ever told that the most expensive or rare whiskeys ought to be our favorite - just that they've all got something interesting to offer. This very well could have been our favorite activity from my bachelor party weekend. Twenty of our whisky tasting group, The 3 Drunken Celts, visited the Whisky Attic again this past weekend and were treated to a very unique and interesting set of drams from thier 2400+ selection in house. JD was very knowledgeable and despite our group being no slouches in the knowledge of whiskies and the industry itself, to the individual, each found some new bit of knowledge to add to our own.
