I have met numerous industrial hygienists on sewage, pollutant, trauma/bodily fluid, smoke and fire damage claims. Too many hygienists talk a good game but fail to deliver when it counts. Sol Environmental is better. Sol was recommended to me by a senior entertainment attorney overseeing a large legal team, and that endorsement proved accurate. When I first met with Raul and Nick at Sol Environmental, I immediately recognized their technical depth and concern for the clients. They discussed testing protocols for contaminants that most hygienists overlook or simply don't understand--particularly the volatile organic compounds and particulate matter that pose serious health risks in post-fire environments. When other hygients test for lead and asbestos, Sol is testing for everything: mercuty, silica, arsenic, dioxins, cadmium, barium lithium, you name it in addition to the lead and asbestos. What sets Sol apart is their background as specialty remediation contractors. They don't just identify contamination--they understand the actual remediation process, which makes their protocols far more comprehensive and defensible than what I typically see from competitors. Their protocols meet the standard of care, which is rare in this field. Sometimes I just need good sampling and lab results. But if i need a defensible step by step protocol, Sol is great. More importantly, they're willing to stand their ground when insurance carriers bring in questionable experts pushing junk science to minimize scope and deny proper remediation. Sol backs up their findings with solid scientific evidence and proper testing methodology. In claims where bad faith is already an issue, having a hygienist who won't fold under pressure is invaluable. I've referred Sol Environmental to multiple clients, and they've consistently helped secure the proper remediation my clients deserve. Good communication and quick scheduling. I was able to have a technician come out the same day I called to schedule. The technician was extremely friendly and helpful. He answered all my questions while he was concentrating on the testing, set up etc. He was careful with his words meaning he didn't cause any unnecessary stress or anxiety. He wasn't pushy and was conscious of the cost while also recommending what samples are needed or suggested. He was clean and careful. Cons: Expensive compared to other mold testing companies. The invoice can quickly add up. I originally planned for about $800 ($500 base fee plus $75 for 4 samples). I added on asbestos test and that brought my bill to over $1300. In some ways I see this as a positive though because you get what you pay for (I hope and can't compare to any other company). My whole house wasn't moisture mapped as I was told it would be. The tech said they only focus on the reported areas of concern. Not a big deal but would've been nice to know. I kept getting rescheduled by 15 minutes. The tech was running late then running early so that was a little confusing. I jokingly asked them if I get compensation for the changed appt time since I signed the contract already (they charge $150 for any changes). They said no. The report is a bit confusing as it was the first time. The most annoying is that in the asbestos report they suggested further testing. Likely costing another $1000 or more. I thought I was already paying for the best testing. This feels a bit like a trick in some ways. Overall I'd go to JLM again. I suggest to do some research beforehand though to know exactly what you need done (AND WHY meaning are you renovating or just wanting to know for health reasons etc) so you don't get unneeded tests or costs.

In my correspondence with Gene K., a representative of Scope Environmental (cut and pasted from Yelp chat room) mentions "We can definitely help. Our asbestos inspection, survey, and lab results pricing is very competitive. It's $625 for the inspection and report. Each sample is $35. No other fees. Generally, results and reports will be available within 24-48 hours". Gene K. also mentioned the following "Some samples have multiple layers, and that can not be determined prior to taking the physical sample. You are welcome to call in so that you can properly comprehend the procedures". However, UNDISCLOSED FEES can creep into the price charged to the customer, e.g. such as the need to test "multiple layers" of one material; so, "No other fees" is (deliberately) misleading and therefore, deceptive. A field inspector (Daisy Flamenco) of Scope Environmental, arrived at the project site and upon seeing the area that needed sampling, asked the homeowner for a ladder to get her modest stature to the sampling material areas. When sampling the ceiling, Ms. Flamenco was barely able to reach the sampling surface (needed to be on her tippy toes), even with a step ladder (provided by the homeowner). ALL sample takers must come fully prepared for all conditions at the work site and not rely on the homeowner to provide tools, equipment or assistance of any kind to do THEIR job! Ms. Flamenco was dressed casually, no respirator or other appropriate protective equipment or gear, which is not only hazardous to herself, but sends the message to the homeowner (overseeing the work), that asbestos is really not that harmful. Even two and a half years following the end of the COVID-19 pandemic, it is appropriate if all workers who enter a home, to wear a mask or at least offer to wear one, but Ms. Flamenco failed to show the occupants of the residence, such consideration. Most (professional) people return to bad pre-pandemic habits, even if to protect the home's occupants from the common cold. What is really inconsiderate and unprofessional, is that Ms. Flamenco had disturbed suspected asbestos containing materials by scraping and cutting away material from parts of a furnace and its ducts, leaving the furnace and ducts out-of-order, i.e. if no asbestos or other harmful materials were found, the furnace and ducts could not be safely and effectively used without first repairing them. Leaving carcinogenic materials exposed (cutting, scraping or otherwise removing and exposing asbestos) to those who live at the work site, is hazardous and unprofessional and should never be done this way. Exposing harmful materials puts people and animals at risk of exposure to carcinogens and asbestosis causing particles! Asbestos sample takers should take measures to seal or otherwise cover, exposed asbestos containing materials (when they are through sampling them), to protect home occupants. This experience was a wake-up call to how incompetent workers can make a bad situation, worse!

After the Palisades fire, I hired Haztek to address light smoke and asbestos dust in two areas of…read moremy home. The owner, Ami, presented himself as highly experienced with wildfire remediation and repeatedly warned me that other companies--and even my insurance--would not protect my family. I have two very young children, and I relied on what he told me. Only later did I realize that most online reviews were from people who had phone consultations, not verified wildfire remediation customers. During the project, Ami also told me he was receiving many referrals from my then-State Farm adjuster after I introduced them. Without my knowledge, he brought a public adjuster to my home and was seen on my doorbell camera discussing all the work he received since that introduction. I never consented to my home being used in this way. Haztek initially sent my insurance an estimate over $160,000. After they learned my policy limit was $100,000, the estimate dropped to $84,000, and I was asked for a 50% deposit. I later learned this deposit structure is not allowed for this type of work in California. After work began, contamination increased dramatically. - Initial asbestos levels around 1,000 structures/cm² rose to over 100,000 structures/cm² in the same areas. - Lead levels that were originally within safe EPA limits (one area at 3 µg/ft²) increased to as high as 69 µg/ft² after a chimney sweep. Visible ash remained around the fireplace, in a room labeled as a clean area for furniture. When I asked about the visible ash and the results, I did not receive clear explanations. We failed two clearance tests over two months, each showing higher contamination. While this was happening, extensive demolition occurred, without permits or testing for lead/asbestos despite our home being built in 1974. This included drywall, hardwood floors, cabinetry, tile, and bathroom fixtures. I only discovered it when my doorbell camera showed my toilet sitting on my doorstep causing me to drive home and find total destruction. When I asked why I hadn't been notified, the explanation I received didn't match the dates shown on camera. I was told demolition was due to mold. Two licensed mold companies later performed moisture testing and confirmed there was no moisture problem. The demolition caused major damage to my home. I also have footage of appliances being moved in ways that damaged surrounding floors * Dust/Ash remained on multiple surfaces after work was marked complete. * When I asked what justified their costs being so much higher than companies like Servpro, no specific differences were provided. * PPE usage was inconsistent. When I was present, it was used; camera footage on other days I wasn't showed workers didn't. * Several items labeled "keep" went missing, including irreplaceable baby keepsakes. Smart devices they claimed were non-cleanable later appeared active and used at a different location, with streaming accounts still logged into and used. * Reported work hours didn't match what was captured on camera. Haztek demolished our HVAC closet, which contained popcorn material. No containment was used. I have photos of this material falling into the HVAC system and return ducts. Afterward, asbestos levels in nearby areas tested extremely high. This demolition was not part of the original wildfire or asbestos dust scope. By the time I understood what was happening, our insurance benefits were nearly exhausted, and our home was left with higher contamination and heavy damage. We ultimately discarded nearly all belongings. The impact on our family has been significant. Haztek advertises expertise in asbestos, lead, fire, and mold remediation. When I checked the CSLB website, the listed license showed a general contractor license. I was not able to locate: * A C-22 asbestos abatement license * CDPH lead abatement certification * IICRC fire or mold remediation certification If you are dealing with wildfire or hazardous cleanup, I strongly recommend verifying all licenses with the appropriate agencies, using independent third-party testing, avoiding large upfront deposits, and confirming all scope details in writing. I hope sharing my experience helps someone else avoid what we went through.

So I had second thoughts about using this company because I read some bad reviews and oh boy was I wrong. I used another company to do my first inspection and there report was not what I expected so I thought about getting another inspection done and comparing both reports. From ordering the Inspection, Inspector being on time and answering all of my question on site was already a huge plus for me and my husband. This is not our first home that we purchase but the price is up there so we needed to make sure we getting a good structured home. As soon as I saw the report and compared it I was shocked. Our Inspector found several leaks in the crawl space and on the roof. Since it wasn't safe to go on top he used his drone to look and take pictures. Here are the pictures for everyone to see the professionalism of this company. I don't understand how the other company I used missed all of these issues. Brett deserves 6 stars, but Yelp only allows me to give him a maximum of 5. When my offer to buy a home was accepted, I called Universal Inspect because of their favorable Yelp reviews, and Brett returned my call promptly. I was under a very tight time-frame to get a general inspection and a sewer line inspection done. Brett accommodated my schedule and showed up with some pretty fancy equipment (a drone to inspect the roof, a robot to navigate a tiny crawl space, and a camera to explore my sewer line). His report was thorough and has allowed me to negotiate more effectively with the seller. There were also some more specific inspections that I needed performed on the house and Brett scheduled and arranged all of those for me. Everyone he recommended was as excellent as he is. Moving from out of state I was faced with the task of finding an inspector for our new home. Obviously our realtor gave us a number of choices, but I've never been keen on using deal breaker services based on realtor recommendation. Our property inspections came up as a top choice along with two others so I compared reviews. Then I called. Joycelyn answered the phone, we talked, set up the inspection after giving details of the home and out of state status for the following week. In a nutshell, Universal performed the inspection found many little fixes to be done along with 1-2 minor issues to be resolved. The inspector was professional, thorough, and took the time to explain the findings in a way that was easy to understand. General inspection, roof, pool, sewer, mold, etc. all done by the same company (and by 3 people at once so it didn't take forever and a day). Also, prior to the inspection, scheduling was very easy and customer service was great with them fitting me into a cancellation to get my inspection done sooner. We received our report later about 9 hours after our inspection was complete (and received our expedited mold report a day later), and the report is very thorough and easy to read. Once again, if you want the best inspectors and best customer service, this is who you want.

Foot 50-year-old inherited home in South Orange County. We are currently performing our due diligence in preparing the property for sale, and investing in this type of specialized inspection is simply the smart thing to do. From start to finish, Tim was fantastic. He was on time, friendly, and highly knowledgeable. What we appreciated most was his communication style--he handled all of our questions with absolute ease, explaining the technical details in a way that was clear and easily understood. When we received the final report, we were blown away by how comprehensive yet easily understandable it is. Rather than a simple pass/fail summary, their reports are incredibly detailed and leave no stone unturned. They include: An room-by-room physical and visual assessment breakdown. We did not have every single room tested, but we tested any suspect areas where we could see there had been prior leaks. Moreover, their thermal imaging equipment can spot leaks that we could not see. Detailed ambient indoor air sampling alongside localized outdoor baseline controls. Advanced wall cavity core sampling to actively look for hidden moisture issues. Direct surface swab testing of several suspect areas. Exact diagnostic tracking data, including localized relative humidity levels and digital moisture-meter readings. Yes, humidity over 5k or 60 percent makes mold grow. You need good air circulation as well as good dehumidifiers when you live close to the ocean. Clear photographic documentation with matching room diagrams and structural descriptions. We knew of several areas that absolutely needed testing. And Tim was great in suggesting what areas we might want to test for hidden leaks based on his thermal image readings. He also pointed out where such tests were not needed. What makes this company unique is that they are true, dedicated environmental specialists. Because they literally have the inspection process down to a science and utilize top-notch, highly calibrated equipment, their operation is streamlined. As a result, their pricing was extremely fair and competitive--in fact, their rates were actually lower than some generic, non-specialized home inspectors we looked into. While initially we planned to have 1 company do all the environmental testing, we found it was less costly and better testing to go with specialists rather than "we do it all companies". It was a super-smart decision. We went with Mold Sci (Tim) for the mold testing and a 2nd specialty company for the asbestos and lead testing (Enviro Diagnostics, Costa Mesa). If you are buying a home, selling your home, or managing an estate property, we highly recommend both companies we worked with and would hire them both again. He explained everything to me in detail, and did his sampling with two way-- quickly confirmed with a tape pull that there was in fact black mold. Lab results come back the very next day at no extra cost, which is also some thing that I was finding to be rare with other companies. She is going to get the sample to the lab and a full report done for me so that I can take this to an attorney and present my case, in order to file a lawsuit against my building.
