I was going to take a birthday trip to Vegas and decided it would be a good idea to get an oil change before. I checked the local shops and decided to try Universal because other reviewers seems to like it and it was also walking distance so I could leave my car and go back home. I had been noticing some noise issues and clicking in my engine and decided to bring that up when I was there. After the initial diagnosis, they told me it was my alternator which is about a $300+ dollar fix. Me, being the skeptical girl that I am, asked if they could explain it further. They actually popped my hood and used some of their tools to show me where exactly the noise was coming from. I've never been treated with such patience and understanding in a car shop before. They actually understand that I know nothing about cars and did their best to explain it to me. I heard the noise and exactly where it was coming from. Even then I went home without fixing it that day and did some research. The price they quoted was extremely reasonable and I decided it was not worth risking my alternator failing on my birthday weekend. I called later the day and asked Jesse to arder the part. He did and my car was fixed the next day. They popped up the hood and showed me again where the noise would have been and it sounded very smooth. Four months later and my car is still running perfectly It's just time for an oil change. Which by the way is about $35ish dollars for my car when other people have quoted me $65-$75. Just saying. Honestly, I wish I could give Jesse more than five stars. When I first moved to LA, I was about to buy a car, brought it to Jesse for a pre-purchase inspection, and he told me it had leaks that would cost ~2k to fix. He said that even if the dealership will fix it, don't buy the car because BMWs have this issue a lot, and if it's already started, I was going to have a lot of issues with it in the future. I was really impressed because he actually stood to benefit from me buying the car and thus going to him for the repairs; he obviously advised me what was actually best for me. I bought a different car a month or so later (a 2011 BMW 3 Series), but it was too far away for him to inspect. About a month after I'd owned it, I felt like the car was handling a little differently than when I bought it, and I wanted him to inspect it anyway, so I brought it in. I don't want to play the female card, but as a 24 year old woman I will say I'm used to not being taken very seriously with car guys (despite the fact that I come from a family of them and, to some extent, am not clueless about cars--I learned how to drive a stick shift at 16.). I have many anecdotes, but I will just say that Jesse is one of the few mechanics who speaks to me like I'm an equal. At best, when I've taken my car into other shops, they've been nice but condescendingly paternal. Jesse actually listens and trust me as a car owner. Let me put it this way: I don't have many loyalties, but if my car breaks down at some point, wherever it is, I will pay whatever it takes for it to be towed to Jesse's shop. I go there once or twice a month. Jesse the owner is very nice and very helpful. Have had work done there and am very satisfied. Sometimes I get Gas at Costco but this place is way more convenient. This is a no nonsense self service station with full automobile repair service. In addition if you have a newer car the folks will do a great hand car wash, clay bar, polish or even clean up those oxidized headlamp lenses. The prices are reasonable. Yelp to the rescue- thanks to yelp I found this car repair shop and very glad I did. My car's check engine light flickered on while I was on the freeway. Started making funky noises. When you've had a car for 14 years- I know bad noises. I took it in to my usual guy, which was within walking distance of my place. He just reset the light, said everything was fine and did an oil change. Hrm. I know something was wrong but he insisted, no issues. After I pick up my car- a day later, light comes on again. Car sounds WORSE. Ok, it's time for a new car repair place. Took my car into universal based on the yelp reviews. Really glad I did, Jesse and his team were extremely helpful and noticed other things my old mechanic cut corners on, which they fixed. The car part they needed from the dealership was delaying the process - dealership kept sending the wrong part. Jesse was so great and he didn't want me to wait any longer, so he sent one of his mechanics there just to pick up the right part. I used to go to Purrfect Auto in Studio City, but one time their incompetence wasted 4 consecutive Saturdays of mine as they tried to fix my car. From that point, I had no choice but go to Acura for all of my maintenance. Yes, top of the line diagnostic equipment (they diagnosed the problem with my car in 10 minutes where Purrfect couldn't in a month!), but Keyes Acura also has stratospheric co$ts. Unacceptable... but over the years, you learn to distrust various auto shops... Last June 2008, my car stalled on the corner of Laurel Canyon and Burbank. Triple A came over and I was going to have them tow us to Keyes Acura on Van Nuys Blvd. The driver however recommended someone at his home base in Burbank. With fiscal constraints making my life difficult, I said, sure. What have I got to lose? Keyes Acura would probably have wanted a kidney and bone marrow this time.... Well, I forgot what the issue was (I think it was the alternator) but the lead mechanic (I think he's the owner) told me what the problem was, cost, and told me it would be ready in a couple days. A candid conversation ensued where he actually told me the car can last a long time. It's a well built car and as long as I maintain it properly, I should be okay for several more years. The car is 8 years old. I have been coming here exclusively since then. He always does a thorough inspection and like a good dentist, he knows if you've neglected your car's required checkups and proper care. Listen, if you don't have a trusted mechanic, I say give this guy a chance. The mechanic's name is Henrie (I think) and one of the nicest, honest guys you'll meet in the auto industry. I guess I was motivated to write this because today, again, they worked on my brakes (great deal) and they rotated the tires, did the oil change (me being neglectful, I had nearly nothing left), AND to my surprise, an early Xmas gift (it's still only Feb) but when I returned from Starbucks (across the street, I was reading the paper for a couple hours) they actually went out of their way and fixed a huge dent that I had near the rear side of my car!!! I mean, this is unheard of!! I'm not saying they did a body shop caliber thing (this is NOT a body shop) but it was infinitely better than what it was before. I don't have the words to thank them. If you become a regular here, I'm sure you will be rewarded by top notch service, honesty, and fair prices. I'm not familiar with all of the staff here, but I really only talk to Henrie. He's about 5' 5", soft spoken, not sure of his nationality, but he's always there at 8am on Saturdays. Highly recommended. read more

Amazing! I took my boyfriend's Kia in for a detailing as a surprise gift while he's out of town. I've never gotten a car detailed before and Jesse was super friendly and upfront about pricing and what to expect-- when I asked for a quote via Yelp, he responded within 15 minutes with a price and estimated time it would take. He spent 6.5 hrs steaming out years of cigarette buildup, flaming hot cheeto dust, and makeup spillage. When I came to pick up the car, Jesse showed me the before pictures so I could compare to each section of the car. It's like a new car! Got my first ever interior detail for my 2010 Lexus IS 250. They made the interior look practically new. Excellent job. I work and live in Burbank and did not know this place existed. Arriving here I just trusted the map because In fact there is no sign for "universal automotive repair". It's a Valero station with a car shop attached. The guys working there are very friendly and trustworthy. The prices are middle of the road but he tries to give you a fair deal. Fair is really the word. Not dirt cheap but also not overpriced and the work is good and done right without being rushed. I had to leave my car for a few hours, and when it was going to take longer than expected, I received a call telling me so, and it was completed soon afterward. They're also willing to give fair quotes for work and stand by the quote. If he can't do a job there, he's got a guy who can and all around it was a pleasure to go here. My Chevy Malibu overheated while traveling from LAX to Bakersfield, I ended up at Universal Service station bc they had the highest customer service reviews and I had my 8mo old with me. My car ended up needing a new water pump & a special tool to complete the job. Not only did Jesse go out of his way to accommodate me & my baby, but my final cost was $200 + under the two other quotes I had received. Every employee I met was kind, considerate and professional. Went in because I figured my transmission was leaking fluid. I was fearing the worst and thought I may need to have the transmission taken apart. Upon further inspection by Jesse and Russ they found that the screws on my radiator came loose and all that needed to be done is for them to be tightened. Thought I would spend a few hundred dollars and just paid $20 walking out. Jesse and Russ explained everything and were very honest and upfront. I went to Universal Service Station after spending days looking for a trustworthy spot to get springs installed on my car. I happened on this small and somewhat hidden spot after reading through 1 too many forums online. You can tell Jesse cares about his work and it shows in his demeanor and approachability. It felt like I was visiting a long-time mechanic who knew me instead of the typical big-name business mechanic who jumps straight to labor fees before you can even tell them what you need to be done. I gauge a lot of confidence in mechanics based off of what kind of cars are on their lot.. sorta like the pictures you see on a restaurant menu. This isn't your run-of-the-mill autoshop. It's practically a mini car show and that let me know I was at the right place. (That isn't to say that you can't bring your daily driver) Jesse was able to find me a time slot even with numerous other jobs he had and communicated with me (non-robotically) regarding progress on the car. And most importantly what everyone wants to know: he doesn't charge a mortgage payment for the amazing work. Honestly, I have taken my car to many shops before all reassuring me they were taking care me and my vehicule. However in the end I would always feel taken advantage of. There was always something added to the cost. I have started coming here last year based on a Groupon offer for an oil change. Normally I go in get charged an arm and a leg for my lexus, typically the norm. They did the work and explained the details of what was being done and what I potentially needed with time frames. Never have I gotten that kind of knowledge. I made the decision to bring all my cars and get them taken care of. Now it's been a year or so and I no longer live in Burbank. Much like the hundred other 5 star reviews of this place I have had similar experience here with Jesse and crew. The thing about taking your car to a mechanic is that if you aren't mechanically inclined, you have no idea what is really necessary to have done on your car. Sure there are always several RECOMMENDED services to be performed that would ultimately extend the life of your care, but what is NECESSARY? Jesse takes the time to find out what your end goal is with your service. I took my '01 Ford Focus here with 150,000+ miles on it. It was a beater and I just needed to keep it running without maintenance costing more than the cars value. I had to bring this car in a few times and every time Jesse recommended what needed to be done that wouldn't break the bank. When finally the car had major problems and he said the cost would be too high, I took the car and sold it to get a new one. It's hard to find a business that has an owner who cares enough about his customers and isn't just trying to make as much money as possible. He understands that repeat business is much better than making a quick buck. If you're looking for somewhere to bring your car in, take it here. Always willing to work with your schedule and fix emergency car problems. The technicians have polished skills. I have seen them work on radio installation, alarm service, and locking system correction. Jesse consistently finds the best quality parts for the best price and I trust him to make the right decision when it comes to my car. I have been especially lucky with this service station because my car is a bit older (1997 Kia Sportage) and they are still able to diagnose & fix the problems. I came here thanks to stellar Yelp reviews, so it's only fair that I leave a review in exchange. Came in after getting a MAJOR bit of work done - poorly - by the dealership. Glad I came when I did! Stopped in because my A/C wasn't blowing cold, but also noticed that dealership had drained and failed to replace my coolant. By contrast, Jesse and Walter took the time to double check the rest of the car's status, offer some insight into possible causes, and even told me what to keep an eye out for in the future. Preventative maintenance: bad for business, good for my wallet! Their whole approach feels about as painless as one could ask for from a mechanic. Plus the vibe is welcoming, layperson-friendly, and generally zero-pressure. In the 30 min I was there I met two different longtime customers, both of whom were outspoken fans of Jesse and his shop. I went to them to pre-purchase review a used car I was thinking of buying. It took 1 hour and they charged me $80. The results they told me was the car was clean except for possible ~$200 in upcoming repairs, so I decided to buy it. Two weeks later the "check engine" light AND "Maintenance required" lights came on, and the car started making loud whining noises. My usual mechanic did a full review and told me the car needs about $4000 in repairs, TWICE what I paid for it! These guys did a shoddy, cursory review of the car. If they had really looked under the hood and done their job, I'd be saved thousands of dollars. The $80 they charged for was worthless. I picked them because of proximity to the dealership and the amazing reviews, but maybe no one brought-in a car that actually required their full attention! read more

My experience was aweful. I went here because of the Yelp reviews. Maybe it was an off day, maybe it wasn't, but when I showed up for my scheduled appointment for an oil change for my 2006 BMW 325i, I was told, "the mechanic had an emergency" and that they would not be able to work on my car as scheduled. Huh? Is there only 1 person working on Friday? Why didn't they call instead of making me drive there just to be turned down? All I got was a "Sorry, bud." Hey, dude, I'm not your "bud", I'm your customer and you should have had more courtesy. I also noticed one very important thing about this place - THERE IS NO "UNIVERSAL AUTO REPAIR" SIGN. It was difficult to find this shop. Interestingly, however, they had several signs about how well they're liked on Yelp. They seem to be more concerened about their marketing rather than their customer service. Lastly, one of the reviews I read said, "They did a oil change and I was in and out relatively quick. Cheap price for a bmw oil change, I usually pay $100" This is also interesting because I was quoted $124 for my oil change. Oh, but with the Yelp discount, it would be $104. Sounds to me like they raised their price, just to make it seem like I'm getting a deal. Also, I was told that the oil change would take "40 minutes". Really? that long for an oil change? For everyone's reference, there are other(affordable, efficient) repair shops offering $90 for the same oil change. I'm definitly going there instead. read more

Amazing service! Recently my brakes started making noises and my car was due for an oil change. I was happy to find a shop that was in my city that could do both repairs. I made an appointment for the next morning and as luck would have it, work decided to call me in randomly for the next day. I begged my boss to push me to the afternoon so I could still get my car repaired. Then it dawned on me that I would still have no time to get ready while waiting at the shop for the car to get done. I went on Universal's website to cancel the appointment, when I noticed they had a concierge service. I called and ask how much it would be and they said it would literally cost me nothing. I was (and still am) completely blown away. I had time to get ready for work and more while my car was repaired, without ever leaving my house! My car came back right on time; driving as smooth as ever. I can't recommend them enough. Totally awesome shop! read more

I've only gotten my oil changed once since moving here & went to a place where I felt pressured into the upsales the mechanic was pushing on me. I went back because it was the only place I knew, & he was too busy to change my oil. I yelped nearby places & the second place I called also couldn't fit me in. I finally called this one & he asked how soon I could be there. 5 minutes later I left my car with the friendly mechanic & was standing outside trying to figure out what to do during the 30 minute wait. The cashier invited me inside since it was cold, which I thought was super nice, but I had just Googled the Starbucks down the street. He said he'd call me when my car was ready & even told me to use the crosswalk right there because there wasn't another one (just another friendly gesture). 30 minutes later, I was ready to go! We then talked for a few minutes while I checked out & he was just super nice & seemed genuinely interested in what I had to say. It's just nice, especially in LA to have that friendly attitude & care that you usually can't find in a big city. Grateful to them for that & my car is running well. I will be back! read more
