Early in June I purchased three bikes and accessories from UBC at almost $3500. One of the bikes had a flat rear tire every time my wife would go to ride it. I'd fill it up and usually by the next morning the rim was on the ground again. The bike may have had 2-3 miles on it so i took it to UBC 30 minutes away and asked them to have a look. They checked it and told me there were no leaks and then went on to explain to me how bikes lose air pressure. I have been working on bikes as an owner & rider for 45 years, I know the dynamics of air in a bike tire. I told them they didn't look hard enough and after some back and forth with Alec they took it back and replaced the tube. When the old guy from service came out he was ranting about having to replace a good tube for no reason, Alec gave me the bike and I left. Before I even got the bike home and off the carrier it was flat again. I gave them the benefit of the doubt and inflated it again but by morning it was flat. I know it was a new tube because the valve stem was threaded where the original was rubber. Rather than go back and suffer through another argument and down talking like I was a yuppie idiot who doesn't know which end of a screw driver to use, I ordered a new tube. Today I pulled the tube they put in, verified the leak, then actually took 20 seconds to inspect the inside of the rim to find out why it keeps punching holes in tubes and found a huge burr in the rim that penetrated the protective liner and was cutting the tubes. Had UBC taken 20 seconds of their own to look into the problem rather than being convinced the customer didn't know what they were talking about they would have found the problem and been able to fix it correctly. I don't care how long they have been in business but sometimes they should listen to what their customer is saying to them, there are a lot of idiots out there, I'm not one of them. I wanted to find and work with an independent bike dealer but there aren't as many any more. Unfortunately this isn't the one. I'm happy with our bikes but I'll find somewhere else for future needs. read more

Put a downpayment on a Specialized Roubaix SL8 (base model). Few days letter get a call from Carlos assuming he's updating me on when the bike will arrive. Nope. He attempted to change my mind / upgrade to a 105. This was highly irritating b/c at the shop I was unequivocal with Jonathan that i did NOT want the 105. Now my SL8 is in limbo. Alex seems to be the most helpful on the staff. I have called proactively to get updates and being ignored. I really want to support local biz here in Tampa/St. Pete but feel deflated and full of regret. I really don't want to post a 1 star review, but reading the others, clearly I'm not alone. They underestimated me as someone who works in PR and has access to all the cycling publications in the U.S., and local press including Tampa Bay Times, St. Pete Catalyst, and more. I will also get it inspected upon arrival by a trusted local shop near me in St Pete. Spoke to Carlos on the phone today and he didn't have the tracking number. Had to go "chase it down" from the Specialized sales rep. I now know what is likely going on: They are purposely delaying shipments and using customer deposits on expensive bikes as interest free loans to boost short-term liquidity. This is not only deceptive biz practices, but a directly violation of the FTC's rules and regulations. I'm prepared to file a report if I do get answers in the next hour. read more

This is a great local bike shop, friendly and good mechanics. I just moved to Dunedin and needed some tires and bottle cages put on my tri bike, because I was late leaving for Ironman FL. The local "triathlon" shop in Clearwater told me to go somewhere else because they were too busy. Dang, it's like 10 min worth of work I know my old local tri shop in Wesley Chapel would have helped me, but it was too far. So I called UBC, my first Florida shop, and they said they were short a mechanic and busy, but after I explained I was leaving today for a race they said come on by. If you are a cyclist, you should check out this bike shop. You will be like a kid in a candy store. They have a large selection of gear, from helmets to shoes/cleats/pedals to obscure parts and nutritional supplements. We came to look at road bikes to replace my boyfriend's 30 year old Trek. I had been nagging him to get a new bike for weeks but you know how men like to repair old things instead of buying new ones. Anyways, he ended up trying out some bikes that were on sale and purchasing a nice new one after all! Hipster employee Jacob went through all the motions including fitting, trying out bikes and finally, financing. Perhaps it is because this store services USF students who are short on cash but I haven't yet encountered another bike shop that offers interest-free financing (upon approval) and I thought that was a great option. I have been impressed with pretty much every bike shop that I have visited in Tampa and this one was no exception. It also happens to be the closest to home which is great, and right across from Toyota where I often spend ungodly amounts of time getting my car serviced. The customer service was great and the selection is pretty vast. They are open until 7pm on weekdays, and got really busy around 6pm, so I would give yourself a few hours if you are looking to get a bike since the process is very thorough. Enjoy! read more

I came in about an hour before they closed on a Tuesday and had exceptional service! I knew I needed my back tire and tube replaced but I left needing both tires replaced and some work on my rear brake. When they told me about the other tire and break needing work they made sure I was comfortable going forward and did not at all make me feel like they were looking for things to charge me for-you could tell they really wanted the best for me and my bike. The staff is very knowledgeable and I felt at home while I waited for them to finish. I felt bad coming in so close to closing, but they did not rush me or make me feel like I was a nuisance (unlike practically any store or business when it's closing time). The overall price of my visit was cheaper than any bike place I've been to here in Tampa and much closer to home-will definitely be returning! read more

This is one of the best bike shops in Tampa! I've come here Aton of times and service is always great. I've bought a mountain bike here about two years ago and loved it. Anytime I had questions or needed help with fixing something on it the staff here have always been extremely helpful. The prices are about what you would expect for a quality product that's gonna last. They have a big selection of accessories and clothing as well as a used products. I've been looking to pick up a fixed gear bike and figured I would come here and test ride a few. They did not have to many bikes in stock for the size I was looking for in the frame but I did get a chance to test ride one. I was happy with my experience and will definitely be returning in the near future. read more

I went in knowing what bike I wanted to buy. I waited for several minutes before being acknowledged by a young guy. He answered my questions and I gave him my driver license so I could test the bike. I went for a ride and returned to the shop ready to make my purchase. The guy that was helping me on was now on the phone with a customer. I waited patiently for 10 minutes. I then asked another employee if he could help. He was very nice and told me he was finishing something for a customer that was waiting. I understood and waited several more minutes. He finished what he was doing and asked what I needed. I told him I wanted to get the bike I tested. He looked in the computer to check the inventory. They did not have the color I wanted and I asked if it could be ordered. He said it could be ordered and the guy that initially helped me would finish up. I waited another 5 minutes. Finally I saw a heavyset bald man with a shirt indicating he worked there (who looked quite a bit like the gentleman on this site named "Carlos M" who is listed as an owner of the shop). I said, "excuse me" and he turned to look at me and kept walking. I repeated, "excuse me, could I please get some help?" He stopped and turned to me with an inconvenienced look on his face. At that point I decided to leave. I waved him away. I walked out to my car and realized I had left my driver license in the shop. I went back in and waited while a clerk chit chatted with customers at the desk. Finally the guy that originally helped me came walking up. I asked for my license and told him what a ridiculous experience this had been. All he had to do was get someone else to help me while he got called away. All the second guy had to do was also get someone else to help me. The large bald guy just needed to help me. I told them they lost a sale. I got weak apologies. I went out to my car and called David's World Cycle. They had the model and color I wanted. I drove over and was helped immediately. I was in and out with a new bike in 10 minutes. Bottom line: There are many other bike shops to go to in Tampa. Don't go to UBC. read more

Ok, it pains me to say this but I"ve got to revise my previous review downward.....dramatically. I paid for a rather extensive overhaul tuneup on my Trek inclusive of truing both wheels. Well, after half a dozen rides my rear wheel was severely out of true. And a spoke had popped loose. I took my bike in to a shop closer to home and they told me the rim was shot. They explained that they could true it up to give the appearance of the wheel being true, but it's shot, and will be warped again within a few rides. They showed me how some of the spokes were extremely loose and I needed a new rim. I wish UBC would have just been honest with me at the time and I would have bought a new rim from them and be done with it. So I ultimately wasted a bunch of time and money with UBC and ultimately had to have a new shop clean up their mess. Oh well, the good news is I found a new home now with the shop closer to my home. Too bad, the guys and UBC were nice guys. I think they just do so much business it's keep em' moving boys! read more

I don't like to give bad reviews on yelp, but I have had two experiences where I paid them money to fix my bike, and two experiences where something broke almost immediately after the service. The first time we brought my boyfriends bike in to get a tune up, which cost over $100. The day we picked it up, my boyfriend biked to work and the chain popped. He wanted to give them another chance because a friend had given them good reviews and he paid $40 for a new one. I brought my bike in for a new tube for the back tire and they told me I needed a new tire, they really like to upsell.... a few days later when I was riding my bike to work, the tire went flat about halfway through my ride, and while I was realizing it was flat, it got wobbly and the chain froze. Turns out while putting the tire back on the bike they didn't tighten the quick release enough and it popped out. I will not be going back to get it fixed as I'm sure they will try to tell me i must have ran something over to get another flat, and not take responsibility for not tightening the quick release properly. read more

These guys are awful and do not take their jobs serious. My first experience here was with a salesman who wondered around the store aimlessly not thinking I actually wanted to buy anything. I decided to give them another chance. I wanted them to match a price on a bike that I had found somewhere else and they were supposed to call me back. Never did so I called them. They claimed they had been very busy and had not had the chance to call the other store. The guy said he would call the other place immediately after we hung up. The day passed on, still no phone call back. These guys DO NOT want to sell you a bike. Go elsewhere. read more

My friend took her bike tire in for a fix and they did a thorough diagnosis, finding another minor issue they were able to also fix for only $1.50. They are really looking out for your best interest. I've been in the market for a new bicycle for several months, and I've been shopping the various stores in town to talk with the employees and look at the wide selection of bicycles. As I started this quest I could tell the difference between a racing bike and an off-road bike, but truly had no idea whether I wanted a commuter or a hybrid. I knew that I didn't want to spend thousands of dollars on a custom carbon-framed racing bike, nor did I want to buy a cheap piece of crap from a discount superstore. That's where Manny and the team from University Bike Center (UBC) have been tremendously helpful. They patiently took the time to walk me through the various options and explained the pros and cons of each style of bicycle. I told them I was interested in a bike to ride on the Upper Tampa Bay Trail and to use as I tooled around the neighborhood. The commuter bike seemed to be the best fit for my needs, and that was then followed by an extensive set of measurements to determine the correct frame height, placement of the pedals, location of the handlebars and so on. Once we had all of that information filled out on my profile it was time to start shopping for the various bikes. (As you can see this whole process is a lot more involved than simply picking out the blue bicycle with the little silver bell on the handlebars, or the black one with the baseball cards in the spokes of the front wheel.) Since those initial visits to UBC Bikes, I have gone to several other bike shops around town to ask similar questions and see what else I can learn. I've rented a few bikes and taken them out for a spin on the trail, and I'm about ready to make my purchase. The guys at UBC Bikes have one me over with their professionalism and their quality of merchandise, and this is where I'll be making my purchase. Please note, I'm a newbie to road bikes, and haven't ridden a non-stationary bike in over 4 years...So, what brought me here? I bought a used bike from a third party and brought it here because after my first ride with it, I noticed a weird clanking noise at a certain gear I used...it ended up being the chain hitting the derailleur. OH NO, that sounds bad and expensive, and I don't have a good poker face, they're gonna take me for every penny I got...NOPE, Ben was the rep who helped me, explained this was an easy and pretty cheap fix, and that other than this bump, my bike seems in pretty tip top shape! For an 8 year old bike that I had no idea was in fair or good shape, I was really happy to hear their honest opinion. And when I inquired about a tune up, they told me put that on the back burner since one wasn't really needed at this time. $15, one hour later, and some great conversation with another customer rep, Caliche, plus some handlebar tape I bought to go with my bike, and I was on my way (: Oh and Ben explained to me what the gears on the handlebar are an everything, seriously, these people are so patient, kind, and are able to answer all your questions. I saw them helping two guys out who were there before me, and were still there picking tires and other products when I was leaving. If you're a USF student, mention it to them for a discount. And you get a discount if you sign up as part of their club / membership (basically if you come back to them you keep getting discounts). I was a little bummed when they told me it would be $15 to put the handlebar tape on my bike, it seemed pricey for something I know I can YouTube and do myself...but I guess I'll find out if it's worth it when I try to put it on! I might just have to go back to them if I can't figure it out... Anyways, everyone I encountered were super friendly, patient, and really wanted the best for me and my bike! This place comes highly recommended by me, I don't think I'll be going anywhere else after this experience. Oh, and there are staff who speak Spanish, as well! read more

I have to give this place 5 stars. I have 2 cannondale mountain bikes that were in need of service. They did a great job and took pride in their work. The service manager Manny SR was phenomenal. Walked me through the bike and discussed the work that needed to be done; there were no surprises. Very happy with the shop. While waiting, one of the sale reps (Adam) took the time to walk me through the road bikes and even fit me for a bike. He never tried to push a product and was very detailed in showing the bikes within my budget and skill level. While I have not purchased a road bike yet, this place will have my business when I decide to take dive into road biking! read more

I recently purchased a new Salsa Warbird, with the new GRX group set for my wife. The GRX group has the ability to add a second set of brake levers to the top bar to give the rider another position for braking. The GRX BL-RX812 and BR-RX812 make up the right and left sub levers, are new and not widely distributed yet through the Shimano supply chain, and through local retailers.Prior to finding the levers online and ordering them from the internet, I contacted Shimano Customer service to see how difficult they were to install. Shimano Customer service stated they are tricky because air has to be removed from both levers and the sequence is specific. Shimano Customer service pointed me to Technical Bulletin DM-GADBR01-03, found on their web site. After reading and reviewing the the installation process for fitting hydraulic lines and bleeding the brakes, I decided to take it to a professional. I called and spoke with Ashton Avari-Cooper, grandson, in the service department, prior to taking the bike to the shop. Ashton said he was not familiar with levers, but that his father would be the one working on the bike. When I dropped off the bike with the new levers, they looked at them and said maybe there's a YouTube video that shows the installation. My comfort level with technicians dropped to a new low. Knowing that I was not capable, I mistakenly left the bike for repairs. That was a Wednesday and Saturday I had a call to pick up the completed bike. On Sunday my wife rode it for a second time and the brakes did not function at the drop levers. In addition, the front derailleur would not shift from small to large chainring. On Monday morning, I called to the shop and asked for a Manager. I spoke to Alec who said he was not familiar with the Shimano Sub Levers and transferred me to someone else. I suspect it was the owner who picked up the phone, but he too, did not know anything about the brakes and transferred me to another person. On the other end of the phone was Ashton, the very person I spoke to initially the week before, when I inquired about the installation, the cost etc and whom I dealt with when I dropped the bike off. Ashton who was the one who assured me they would check the bulletin and his father, would install them correctly was once again the person disputing my claim that the installation was done incorrectly. With a few more questions to Ashon, I quickly learned that Ben was the technician, who installed them but never read the technical bulletin DM-GADBR01-03 and did the job wrong.Frustrated and annoyed, I called Shimano to see if there was a service center with technicians in Tampa that might have the experience necessary to bleed the brakes correctly. A call to Orange Cycles in Orlando a master Shimano Mechanic and Chainwheel Drive in Clearwater and I it became obvious that the sub levers where too new to the market, and no one had experience with the dual brake lever system. My problem with the shop was that they had no personnel in the shop that had experience with the product, failed to read technical bulletins or utilize Shimano resources and even after bringing it to their attention offered no real reason for me to trust the job would be done correctly if I brought it back. I expected much more from such a large repair shop and was very disappointed in the multiple conversations I had prior to taking the bike in, the conversation I had in the shop when dropping the bike off, no conversation when picking it up and then again speaking with three people when calling to customer service, to complain about the service I received. Undoubtedly the staff will refute my claim here on their review, and will treat me no better than my previous experiences and or deny they failed to do the job right. I don't recommend the service department after my experience. The photos show the GRX sub levers, the brake levers right and left not engaging and bottoming out on the bar tape, and a shot of how the brake should function and engage. After posting my complaint, Ashton called me and hung up when I stated I was taking the bike somewhere else. Shortly later Carlos called me and wanted me to bring the bike back and knew nothing about his son calling me and hanging up. This was a bad bad experience for me and I didn't want to drive 90 miles round trip twice to leave my brand new bike a second time. read more

Drove from the 'burbs becuase our local small bike shop did not have any bikes that suited DD. This place is two stories of bikes! Very knowledgeable and attentive salesman helped us make a decision and find a great bike and accessories. They included extra tun-ups. And we drove back to get them, no extra pressure to buy more - but we did pick up a few more accessories anyway. It's been 3 years now and DD needs to go to college in Utah. Unlike my local shop that was going to overcharge her, UBC will box for less than $50 and make sure the total dimension is 129" so we don't have to pay for over-sized box shipping fees. I don't know where the negative comment from a long time ago came from. While we were there they were very busy, but I did not wait a long time to be helped. There were a LOT of experienced bikers in there - so I know they would go where they got the best prices and service. They stayed available to us till we made our decision and I appreciated that. Also, their bike repair is very experienced. Plenty of parking - great central location. Highly recommend this place for all of your biking needs. read more

I am new to the Tampa area and brought my mountain bike with me. It's been in storage for a while so the bike was a little rusty and the tires were completely flat. I found UBC on Yelp and drove over. They helped me immediately and brought my bike back to the repair section. I thought I was going to need new tubes in the tires but they checked everything out and it just needed air...they didn't want to sell me something I didn't need. They double checked the gears and the chains. I was in and out in about 15 mins. Bike is ready to ride! read more
