This place rocks! UNM Dental Services has been the place I go to for check ups and any cavity and fillnig issues that I have since relocating to NM 4 years ago. Recently, I was advised that there was a decay on my upper wisdom tooth that it would be best to just extract it out to prevent future issues. Honestly, having gone through wisdom teeth extraction process (2 lower ones) 20+ years ago (elsewhere)...I wasn't really thrilled about having to repeat my own traumatic experience again. The scheduling took some time as the time had to be coordinated and I had changed some insurances. That said, the day of operation, I was so nervous and anxious! I wasn't quite sure what to expect with local anesthesia. But, the staff at UNM Dental Surgical Center from front desk Brie to the nurse Chelsea and dentist team working with Dr. Watson were all around awesome! It was such a chill, relaxing vibe at the place on day of operation. Plus, who gets to listen to Frank Sinatra while getting your tooth extract?!?!?! They all were so kind, friendly, relatable, professional and just all around great! The process took just 30 minutes and everything was all done! It went really smoothly that I wished I hadn't delayed taking out my wisdom teeth until later in my life! If you are looking for a professional team to take care and manage your dental, I definitely recommend UNM Dental Services. It may be difficult going through appointment processes, but once you are in the system, everything went well! They could help you with anything from just cleaning to doing surgery like what I just went through! read more

I've always had great experiences at UNM dental. I REALLY appreciate the fact that they never try to sell services that I don't really need, while 95% of the industry try to scam me with excessive preventive filings and other such nonsense. In the 12 years I've been going here with my three kids, only once did I have such an experience-- a filling-happy dentist who initially told me (after digging and digging) that I needed 3 filings (at the age of 46, and never having had one in my life), but who strangely couldn't find the third one when I went back for the procedure. (I've put him out of my mind because I never saw him again.) Parking is a breeze, and wait times are very rarely longer than five or ten minutes. In fact, they tell you to complain if you've been waiting 20. The lobby and facility are sparkling clean, and visits are generally pretty quick. The clinicians here are lovely, but just when you get hooked on an awesome doc, they leave (it's a residency after all), and you gotta make friends with somebody new. Admittedly, billing protocols are sometimes flawed, and my middle child recently experienced issue after issue with appointment cancellations and incorrect billing and multi-visit requirements, but when we finally got her into the surgery clinic, the staff were freaking awesome. Special shout out to CHELSEA, who's got the awesomest bedside manner in town! My kid literally wept for fear (and maybe from anesthesia) that she might not have thanked Chelsea enough for the unparalleled pre-surgery and post-surgery vibe. Truly, even if the docs had been devoid of humanity, she would have still made the experience fun. THANKS CHELSEA AND TEAM! The kid is doing great. Five stars even with recent billing issues and appointment cancellations, because I really can't imagine a better clinical experience. ...Except maybe one that has complimentary Cinnabons and gourmet coffee in the lobby. read more

I have Medicare, and may need an emergency extraction. Good thing I've got pliers in the garage, I guess. Called to inquire about an appointment, today. This after my friend has tried to schedule an appointment for me, all week. Starting Monday morning. Monday morning she called, and was told she'd be called back. Monday afternoon, she called back and was rudely told "we said we'd call you back." Tuesday was Groundhog's Day... Exactly the same thing, and the receptionist pretended that it didn't happen. Tuesday, the receptionist said they'd call either me or my friend back. There was no callback. Today, I called in, I can talk without excruciating pain... The experience went from confusing to bad to hung up on when I said "I can't afford that. I don't think we should schedule the appointment." No "ok, thank you." No "have a good day," no "good luck finding care elsewhere." just a grunt and a click. First, I was told "we don't accept Medicare Advantage" when I said I have Medicare Classic. Didn't ask, but thank you for definitely confusing the conversation. I was told "Your first visit is going to be $130." Hm, they list a sliding fee. So I asked, and was told no "but we have a grant, the dentist will have to approve you, but you'll have to pay $130." So, why can't the dentist approve now? That is NOT how low income grants for the disabled work. Grants are not set up requiring the recipient to pay initially. That's a pay-to-receive scam. That is how scamming the disabled (or elderly, but I'm disabled) on fixed income works. Mika/Mica/Micheal/Michelle, whatever the receptionist's name is, is a huckster, hustler, and scam artist who prey on disabled and vulnerable people. When those people choose not to be preyed upon they lash out and hang up then hang up on the patients. I should have known better than to try UNM health services again. After all, refused to actually diagnose me for the last 4 years, and as a result they let a manageable disease turn into 2 terminal lung diseases in the 4 years I have been in their care as a pulmonary patient, and refuse to chart those 2 pulmonary diseases now... Hard to describe how terrible scheduling was here. My 80 yo mom had her teeth pulled and it took them nearly a year to make dentures for her. Every time she called, they put her at the back of the line. They simply forgot to put her on the schedule twice. Then, instead of bumping the person that had her original appt, they bumped my mom and made her wait toothless for another month plus...each time! Docs were kind, professional, and overly cautious, which I appreciated. read more

I am at that age where complicated dental events are not uncommon, and I had one. UNM Dental Clinic was able to fit me, and get started on it despite my being new to the area. After everything that needed doing was done, the cost to me with my insurance was about 1/3 what I had paid for a private dentist in North Carolina for a similar emergent situation. Had I had to pay the entire thing out of pocket, it still would have been $700 less than the substantially more straightforward dental emergency I had had in NC. I particularly appreciate that their dental cleaning tools include something like a "power wash" of your teeth which lessens the time spent scraping. I also like that they are not always trying to sell me some sketchy treatment which is one of the things I hate about going to a new dentist. read more

This place is a scam. $500 for x-rays and no cleaning? They urged me to "upgrade" the x-rays when they were working in my mouth so I felt pressure to comply. Dentist referred to hole in my tooth as "a tiny butt crack" wtf! Save yourself the trouble and don't go here... read more

Prior to visiting, I called to make sure I would be covered with my insurance. I was assured the dentist was in network and there would be no problem. When I arrived for my appointment, I gave my insurance card to the receptionist who assured me she called the insurance company, and again, no problem. In the dental chair, the dentist, Melissa Ivars, asked me about my insurance. I told her who my coverage was, and the dentist told me she wanted to know to make sure x-rays would be covered. She gave the okay for a slew of x-rays and, at this point, there was still no problem. Then I went to the cash register. Problem. It was at this point the receptionist informed me that while on the phone with my insurance company prior to my appointment, she was told my coverage didn't actually cover much. She said "just like $9". Then she proceeded to tell me that they were currently off line, so I would need to go ahead and pay the total and they would reimburse whatever the insurance covered. When I left the office, I immediately called my insurance. They informed me that the dentist was not in network, so absolutely nothing was covered. Yeah. read more

This is a good place for cleanings, filings and checkups. If you have ongoing dental issues or have a lot of work that needs to get done you need a private dentist that will be with you and your treatment plan from beginning to end. These are graduate dentists doing their 3 year residency. Some are really good others are still learning. The good ones (obviously) are usually in their last year, so you may see him or her 2 or 3 times but then one day, he's gone. You would never go to one dentist for a filing then a different one for another filling, then another for a crown then another for a cleaning, right? That's just asking for trouble. So it's best to keep it simple here. The program is designed to run like a regular, professional dental office. I'm sure that's on purpose to give them the experience as close to real life as possible. Therefore, the students do run the show. In the two years I went here I never spoke or saw a professor looking in, double checking their work or anything, which was.... odd. Nor was there anyone who seemed to be a constant presence "in charge." No names on the door, no information about who is running the place or who is in charge. No one to talk to if you had a complaint or grievance process. You'd think the professors would be interested in talking with patients face to face every now and then. So at times it felt like kids playing dentist especially in the front office and especially when mistakes were made. They are NOT good about organizing insurance. You could very easily be in the middle of treatments and suddenly be asked for $2000 one day before an appointment when they previously said everything would be paid for. The draw to this place is mainly low income people with Medicaid. Surprisingly, their prices are industry standard and are the same as any other dentist's office. There is no discounting going on here even though you are beign worked on and treated by students. Two times i got my teeth cleaned by a gentleman who spoke to me the whole time in English, but I swear to God I could not understand a word he said. I hope it was nothing important. It's these kinds of things that you would think a supervising professor would catch and correct. Poor guy is going to graduate as an assistant and not be understood by his patients. I never complained about anything, because it seemed odd to do so, they're just youngins learning their trade ya know? They do have a piece of paper that they hand you where you can comment on your visit, but they make it very clear that they are read to everyone in a classroom setting once a week, so of course I wasn't going to write anything that I didn't care if it was read allowed - a very ineffective and I think dangerous grievance policy for a medical office. These are people's mouths and teeth we're talking about it here, not a car or a vaccum cleaner. Honestly, the UNM School of Dentristy would greatly benefit from a complete administrative overhaul both in the front and in the back programs of their Residency Clinic. read more

Do not go here for anything other then a cleaning. The Dentists are either brand new or students. They attempted to make me some upper partials, had 3 fittings where they ground some of my teeth down trying to get them to fit. Never did get them and they charged my insurance for them, which has caused me nothing but problems. A very very bad place to have work done. read more

I had several molars extracted at the hospital.. within a week something very sharp began rubbing on my tongue so they made an appointment to see a dentist at the clinic.. The dentist that examined me simply suggested my gums would grow over the sharp protruding bone.. For the next week it got worse until I was unable to eat or talk and had problems sleeping. I made an emergency appointment at a local dentist (I live 240 miles from Albuquerque) The dentist removed 3 small pointy bone spurs and I have immediate relief.. The dentist at the UNM Dental Clinic should have done that and would have saved me more than a week of horror!! read more

I made an appointment and the receptionist told me the address over the phone. When I arrived, it was the wrong address and they said the facility had moved down the street. I called to tell them I would be 15 minutes late as a result, and they told me they couldn't fit me in I would need to reschedule. I rescheduled and went again to the correct address. I waited for an hour before being seen (which makes me wonder why they couldn't take me 15 minutes late the first time...). Then, I was seen by about 5 different people in and out of my room passing off to each other mid-sentence. The doctor didn't seem to know what he was doing, and after 40 minutes in the chair they never even got to a teeth cleaning! I spent 2 hours there, after having wasted an hour the prior week due to the mix up, getting told I had no cavities and not even getting a teeth cleaning.
