We found this spot by chance - the restaurant is located on the 2nd floor above a commercial store. The menu is interesting and varied and we were not disappointed. My spouse had a fish dish which includes a sauce of ginger and guayaba (guava) which was excellent. I had the churrasco stuffed with spinach and cheese - delightful! There is seating outside in the patio (on the parking lot) as well as indoor seating. The music and decor is pleasant and provides a good feeling. The parking area is large and there is a young man who watches over the area. The staff is pleasant and engaging. Our only disappointment - our server forgot our appetizer but she compensated by giving us a free dessert. This is a restaurant that I would recommend to locals and tourists alike. We plan to return here on our return trip to the area. read more

This is such a pleasant, date night / lunch date sort of place. The front of the building faces a major road and appears to be completely unassuming at first, but pull around back, climb a ramp to the second floor, and you'll enter the attractive, clean oasis that is Up. There is an outdoor patio that's decorated so nicely you'll forget that it overlooks the parking lot. The indoor space features some very nice artwork, immaculately clean bathrooms. The food was sometimes excellent. Our alcapurrias were stellar -- though for context, I'm not sure I've ever met an alcapurria I haven't liked / loved. The ceviche (made with some sort of white fish) was quite fresh and good, though a touch lighter on the acid and heat than I prefer. Tacos were more like fajitas, made with wheat-based fajita wraps and in our case diced chicken, lettuce and tomato. These were not at all authentic, but some of our contingent enjoyed. Pastellilos de bistec were nicely fried and blotted, and came filled with some sort of creamy sauce. Our kids were hungry enough to eat them, but this would ordinarily be a no-go. Cocktails were very weak, but conceptually interesting (cilantro mojito!). My partner keeps heckling to go back. read more

UP is the first Restaurant we tried here in Puerto Rico which opens at 11AM on weekdays, as we were warmly greeted and seated by our hostess and is known to serve one of the best dine-in selections 45 minutes west of San Juan (where the majority of the shops and services are located in the island) We ordered the Spicy Crab Tacos, which consists of 6 pieces and is very delicious, you can really taste the Cangrejo (the Spanish word for Crab) inside the cruncy taco. Next on our main course is the Empanadas, as there are 6 pieces, 2 of each which consists of beef, chorizo and melted cheese. It was very good and it bonded really well with the mayonaisse/tomato dip sauce that comes with the entree. For dessert, we ordered the Tres Leches (Three Milks) and to no surprise, it too was very good and we loved how it had nuts and strawberries decorated on top of it. On top of our orders, we definitely had to try the Island nation's beer: Medalla Premium Light which just had the right light taste and a house Sangria too that matched our delightful lunch. The ambiance, music and the cheerfulness plus lively smiles of the locals, whether there is a business lunch meet or the family gathering of 8 on our left that kept on eating and laughing.This place is so alive (Event though there was no Reggaeton music being played yet ;) So, if you ever visit Puerto Rico and head west off the coast, I highly encourage you to come and check out UP, it will definitely elevate your eating experience. We passed this restaurant multiple times without noticing but my goodness everything we had was beyond delicious. They are located on the second floor of a local business and they have a nice large deck for outdoor seating and a smaller inside dining room with I'll bar. We have two small kids and didn't feel out of place with them there. It almost has a bit of a modern club like feel to it with the lighting and decor inside, but it's not intimidating at all. For our appetizers we had sorillitos, queso frito with guayaba sauce and mini spicy crab tacos. All were delicious. The guayaba sauce had a hint of ginger in it which was unexpected but very good. I ordered the salmon (with more Guayaba sauce on the side for dipping) with the most amazing risotto. I believe it was Parmesan and mushroom and it's the best risotto I've ever had, so flavorful. My hubby had the fried chillo (whole fish) with fries and my mother in law had that with the plátano fries. The fish was very large and they both were unable to finish and with several slices of lime squeezed on top they loved it. The kids had chicken fingers, which were homemade and not frozen, with a side of rice and habichuelas. They liked it very much. Lastly we finished off with tres leche cake for dessert. The cake was homemade and had a slight almond flavor while the milk sauce tasted like coquito poured on top. My goodness, it was just perfect and nothing like I've had in the states. By the time we left I was beyond full but so pleased with the meal. I'd love to return again. My family who lives in Morovis and Vega Baja agreed this place is a gem, so we headed their advice and tried it out. I'm SO glad we did. Lastly the waitresses were so nice and attentive. We've checked out quite a few restaurants all over the island, and the food at Up was by far our favorite. The service: Grade A. The ambiance: beautifully decorated. The food: every single thing we had was delicious. The Kankan bites as an appetizer is a must-try. My husband got the Filet Mignon with Mashed potatoes and thought it was as good if not better than what we've had at the NYC steakhouses. I had the churrasco with rice and beans and it was perfectly seasoned and cooked just right. The drinks were excellent and our Molten Lava cake for dessert was delicious. The parking is in the back and we were thankful for the ramp down because we left so full that the thought of stairs moving the food around in my belly was not ideal. Waited over 1.5 hours to get our food. The waitress could have come over to say literally anything and it would have been fine but she ignored us until we called her over. Server didn't even come to offer us more drinks. The food was not even hot when it arrived so not sure why we waited so long. Order was wrong once it came. This place was very very warm welcoming. The staff/servers were very nice and exchanged experiences and their lifestyle with me and the people I traveled with. Our servers service was hands down the greatest. She spoke to us in Spanish and a little bit of English. She even suggested a beach in the nearby area. The food, beyond great. The food came out very organized and very hot. Straight out of the fryer and stove. Honestly, I'm a rice and beans kind of person. The beans here were seasoned so well. I've never had beans that amazing. Kid you not. It seemed to be marinated with some sort of beef, sofrito. The white rice was pretty good. The empanadas de guava y queso was so delicious. I burned my mouth eating them since they were so hot. The Platanos maduros (Amarillo) and the platano verde were great too. The yellow plantains were ripe at its finest so the taste was rich. The empanadas de carne was so delicious. It had cheeze inside as well so the combination was absolute. La pechuga de la plancha was a grilled chicken entree. Seasoned very well and didn't taste or feel like a piece of chicken bulked with carcinogens. Again, this place was amazing. The outside patio is where we sat. It was a nice quiet Sunday evening. Ate dinner at UP the other night and was lmpressed. Atmosphere is upbeat and modern. The staff were all very friendly and welcoming. Dining room, bar, and bathroom were all very clean. The food was awesome! I had the yucca stuffed dorado which was prepared well and lightly seasoned. The yucca stuffing was moist, and filling yet not too heavy. For a side dish I had arroz con gandules. Great taste, moist but still loose and fluffy. At the bar I was given a plate drizzled with olive oil, chocolate,and raspberry sauces topped by small slices of beer bread. A definite change from your average bar snack. Located in Vega Baja a town about halfway between San Juan and Areciebo along the north side of "el numero dos" in the Toruguero area. Parking is around back. Head upstairs to enjoy an upscale, experience. Definitely planning to come back! read more

This place was amazing! I truly can't express how wonderful the staff was here. It was a little hard for me to find because my phone's navigation doesn't work so well in Puerto Rico but when I called and asked if anyone could give me directions in english they found a super nice lady from the kitchen to help me out. She stayed on the phone with me for literally 15 min until we found the place. Then when we arrived it was like a slice of heaven after a very rough day. We sat out on the balcony/patio under fun and festive lights (and there were no bugs.) The drinks were delicious and unique. We tried the pina colada, sangria, margarita, passion fruit mojito and house cabernet. (there were six of us in case I didn't mention) The food was so expertly prepared and the menu had something for everyone. We tried some of the more local dishes and the less adventurous of us had the shrimp alfredo. The server was so nice and explained anything we asked about which was almost the whole menu. It is on the second floor of a building that looks like an auto parts warehouse but once you are inside the atmosphere is very uplifting and inviting. Unfortunately, this restaurant did not live up to the good reviews. First, we arrived at 5:45 pm and decided to sit outside. The waitresses outside were very nice. The patio was pleasant. Unfortunately, the chef/chefs do not understand what it means when someone orders an appetizer. We ordered tostones and alcapurrias as appetizers. We then waited 10 minutes before ordering dinner. Sadly, the appetizers AND dinner came out together, 45 minutes after we ordered the appetizers, even though our waitress, via the headset, kept telling the kitchen that she was still waiting for the missing appetizers. Very disappointing! As far as the food is concerned, it was ok. I ordered the Mar & Tierra. The steak (churrasco), which I ordered medium came out medium rare. The rice tasted like packaged rice. The tostones, when they did arrive, were the best thing we received. My wife did like her ceviche, so at least she was satisfied.
