As a btownie, this is always my go to place for some good food & beer!! My favorite beers: Wheat Ale and Champagne Velvet but I love how they are always coming out with new seasonal beers! Hello, surprisingly underwhelming beer selection! The only seasonal/specialty available on tap was the Komodo Dragonfly Black IPA. I had already been disappointed by it this season, but I thought I would give it another shot. I was pleased, but after that I had no reason to order another beer as the rest of the taps were the house beers I can get just about anywhere. The veggie gyros were great and I love the vegan options on the menu. If I lived in Bloomington, I would probably eat here way too much. The service was highly forgettable, as she didn't really have any interest in talking beer or food. It was a busy Saturday afternoon so turnover was important, but I kept getting that "i'm a shitty chain restaurant" vibe. I've had much better experiences (beer-wise) at the tasting room in Indy, so I'll probably just stick to that. read more

Yes, the beers are very good (and much cheaper than you would pay at a comparable microbrew elsewhere - there is always a special for $3/pint). However I come here more for the food. Because quite simply, Upland is everything that bar food should be. I usually go for the burgers, and they are among the top 3 I've ever had. It starts with your choice of the best meats (beef, buffalo - the best,chicken, black bean), and then all the best toppings - I go for the Cowbell TCB. Then the fries, are those thick kind of fries that really makes all the other fries you've eaten look like crap. Also really good is their fish n'chips - two huge pieces of fish deep fried like they were supposed to be - you won't get better outside the UK. Never have got to try their dinners though - too busy eating their burgers and fisn'n chips. So to review: yes the beer is amazing, and amazingly cheap. But don't go somewhere else for dinner, because the real show at Upland is the food. read more

Open beer have always been one of my favorites. What I visited the brewery, it was like visiting Willy Wonka's chocolate factory. Everyone there was so nice, and I got lots of samples, and happen to catch a little buzz. read more

Good food, courteous staff. We came through for an IU basketball game and decided to check it out. They said the wait would be almost an hour, but we ended up getting a seat in less than 10 minutes, which was great. Ordered the buffalo chicken sandwich which was decent. They make some great fries too. The beer was so-so. I come from an area where there are tons of award-winning microbrews, so I admit I'm a bit of a beer snob. The IPA was over-the-top hoppy and the berliner weisse tasted a lot like lemon juice. I know the berliner is supposed to be more sour than your typical beer, but it was still missing something. The nut brown was good, and I really wish I could have tried their Octoberfest, but it wasn't on tap. I'm not saying the beer was bad, but average at best. Overall a pretty good place. read more

I've been to Upland many many times. I recommend the blue flame burger with buffalo meat with the blue flame sauce on the side. I get it on the side so you can maximize your access to the sauce and dip your fries in it too. It can be loud and the waits long, but the food and beer are top notch. read more

The main attraction here is the beer. The beer is OK, not great. Honestly, I suggest driving down College to Big Red and buying a few six packs of Upland. You will save a lot of time and money! In the summer Upland Wheat is refreshing. However, if you really need to drink a wheat I, again, suggest driving down to Big Red and buying a six pack of Boulevard Wheat. It is infinitely better and cheaper than going to Upland. The other beers are mediocre. The restaurant is nice and generally clean. The wait staff are not great on the whole. The food is reasonably priced and is better than average pub fare. It is an easy place to be a vegetarian. Friday and Saturday evenings are very busy. read more

The beer is pretty good and if you go on the right days, not overpriced. Sunday is $9 pitcher day, for example. The food isn't bad and it's not terribly expensive. I wish that they would hand bread their fish and chips, though. If you go here when the weather isn't conducive to patio dining, be prepared to wait, as the indoors dining area isn't that big. Anyways, hit this place up when the weather is nice, sit on the patio, order some Nachos and kick back a few beers. It's pretty perfect for that. read more

Upland is great. The food gets 5 stars. There's something for everyone here - pub fare, inspired kitchen creations, vegetarian/vegan options. It's all great, and it's all reasonably priced. Their black bean burger is my favorite in Bloomington. I also recommend trying the seitan tenderloin if you're a veg*. I docked a star because it's often impossible to hear the person next to you inside, and the outside regularly has an odd, pungent smell reminiscent of sewage. I'm not sure if this is some type of actual drainage issue, or if it's a result of being on-site where the brewing takes place. Service is also hit-or-miss. read more

I took my family to Uplands for the brewery tour when they came up for a visit. It was a rainy day and we were looking for something to do indoors that everyone could enjoy. We weren't disappointed. The guy who led the tour was knowledgeable and funny (and cute) and overall it was an interesting and educational experience. Who knew that Uplands supplies their used grain to local farms for feed and in turn uses meat from the farms in their restaurant? I love those sort of cooperative business practices. After the tour we sat down for supper and all 5 of us enjoyed our meals.There's good variety on the menu and if you have a vegetarian or vegan in your group they'll have plenty to choose from. I also like that they post the IBU's (international bitterness units) of their beers, which makes picking something you like that much easier. I can't wait to go back and sit outside now that the weather has warmed up. read more

The last two times I've been here, my pitcher of beer has been warm as soon as it got to the table. There was also way too much foam, over 1/3 of the pitcher. Probably directly linked to the beer being far too warm coming out of the tap. My waitress even took away the pitcher with another pint left in the pitcher. Normally, I would have stopped someone trying to clear the table with that much beer left but the beer was pretty warm and awful to start with. The nachos were a soggy disappointment as well. I've been to the sour brewery next door, but I finally got a chance to experience the main brewery and restaurant. The menu has a nice variety of options, but I still had a hard time making a decision because everything sounded so good! I had heard and read good things about their burgers so I decided to go for the Spicy Inferno burger. Usually I'm disappointed every time a place bills a burger as spicy. They always have pepper jack cheese, some pickled peppers on top, and that's about it. However, Upland knocked this out of the park by having a true habanero sauce on the side. It's on the side because you have to be judicious about using it. It literally smells and tastes like pureed habaneros. I thoroughly enjoyed the heat! I asked for my burger to be medium well, and it came back basically well done, but it was still a tasty burger. (Also, that's a fine line to toe with burgers anyway.) My husband also got a burger and enjoyed it as well. We both chose the potato salad which was creamy but had nice big potato pieces to lend texture. I also liked the peas in there too. It was a nice change from fries or a typical potato salad. Service when we arrived was a bit slow, but after that, it was good as the Sunday lunch rush started while we were there. We split a pitcher of the amber ale which was good but a little lighter than some other ambers I've had. It was a good deal though as it got us more beer than individual pints at only $1 more. The interior is cozy, and I love the layout! The patio is pretty too, but it was a bit too windy for us to sit there this time. read more

Upland has great seasonal craft beer as well as the standard favorites that they keep on hand year round. It's the type of place that you take your parents to when they are in town visiting for the weekend and you want great food and some good beer. Upland probably has one of the best burgers in town, always cooked to order and the option of buffalo rather than beef is a great choice. You also can't go wrong with the fish and chips. If you're feeling like a big spender, the Coffee Crusted Buffalo Filet is fantastic! I highly recommend! When the weather is nice, having the option to sit outdoors is great. They have solid drink specials every day of the week and be sure to take home a growler of your favorite beer at the end of your meal. read more

Methinks not...for now. Before last afternoon, I was a big supporter of the Upland Brewery. I'm a Secret Barrel Society member who enjoys their great selection of craft beers, lambics, and inviting atmosphere. I had a pretty stressful day and was looking forward to a chill dinner, good brew, and the company of my family (wife and 4yr old). Instead of an inviting welcome, we were turned away because I brought McDonald's for my 4yr old. They roughly stated that no outside food is allowed due to a "health code." This is the ONLY establishment in Bloomington that has turned us away for bringing in food for our toddler. Children are allowed and welcomed--and that makes this a great place where parents can come enjoy some really eclectic food and beer without having to worry about getting a babysitter. But the menu doesn't accommodate the "under 10" palette. To be clear, the one-star rating is NOT for the atmosphere, beer selection, or adults menu. Those are great--for adults. The outdoor seating is great; the servers are fast; and the fare is delicious! I am giving them one star for the way we were treated at the host stand - no sympathy - and because there is no "under 10 palette" menu to invite parents to come. Upland does not attract the mass of college students -- except when IU has events, and the parents come with their college-aged students. Most of the clientele are professionals, parents and their young children, and couples. It will be some time before we return as a family to Upland -- maybe that's what they intended without a true kids menu. My recommendations to Upland are: (1) figure out your intended demographic, (2a) if it includes children, take a look at other Bloomington establishments' menus (like Irish Lion) to put together a small kids menu [spaghetti with non-spicy sauce, Kraft or Annie's mac&cheese, a little cheeseburger, etc], or (2b) if it doesn't include children, put a note on your website and your door, and (3) coach your hosts on empathy and recommending other establishments. read more

Choices, choices, choices! So many choices! As a vegetarian, I'm used to only having two to three choices (if I'm lucky) on a standard pub menu, but at Upland that is not the case at all. And not only are there choices, there are things you can't get anywhere else in town - like the seitan tenderloin sandwich. Just thinking about it now is making my tummy grumble. When in Bloomington this past weekend, we actually went there twice, once for dinner on Saturday, and once for lunch on Sunday because we couldn't stop thinking about how good the tenderloin had been the night before! The beer here is also quite tasty. I had a porter that was flavorful without being overly heavy, and I tasted a black IPA, which I thought was disgusting (meaning IPA lovers would have thought it was awesome). As mentioned in previous reviews, they are really busy a lot of the time, and service can be spotty, but as a beer loving vegetarian, I've found it to be worthwhile to roll the dice on how the service will be and just suck it up when it's slow. Oh, and it's also nice to go somewhere in Bloomington where you don't have to deal with the fiasco that is downtown parking. read more

It was early August so our group sat outside. We had spent the day moving in two of us into our apartments and were all new friends enjoying the weather and beer. We also had dinner. I had the pulled-pork BBQ sandwich. I love pulled pork and this sandwich was delicious. I've had it a few times since. This is a casual restaurant to come with a group of friends, enjoy a couple beers and a nice, hearty meal. read more

I've tried different things here, and each time I am pleasantly surprised..literally EVERYTHING IS SO GOOD. Staff is also usually friendly and down-to-earth. I could go on for dayyyzzz about the fries. Honestly I think about them way too often. They are my fry standard. Cheesecake is also delicious. And chocolate tres leches. Ok any seasonal dessert that I've had here has been life changing. Fish and chips is delightful. Ok I think you get the idea. I love this place. Always my go-to when people ask where to eat. OH! I forgot about their brunch!! People forget about that. Moral of the story: go there during a weekday for brunch. You will not be disappointed. A Colorado microbrewery with an Indiana problem. Amazing craft beer, delicious food (vegetarian friendly!), and an off-center atmosphere make this a must-visit restaurant in Bloomington. Good for out-of-towners and locals alike. Get here early because the tables will fill up fast, as there is not a lot of capacity. I go for the atmosphere and great beer (and because I live quite close). The food is just ok. The mac & cheese is an exception - delicious - but expensive. I think the nachos are the most solid choice on the menu. I am vegetarian, but my meat-eating house mate feels the same - the food is kinda 'meh' overall. They do have a good variety of vegetarian options. The tofu tacos are actually pretty good too. They don't make their veggie burger in-house, but it is decent - I'm pretty sure it's the Griller's Spicy Black Bean Burger. I've never had an issue with the service. You don't get the warm-fuzzies, but they take care of you and service never seems to be too slow. read more

Whenever someone comes in to town, I try to get them to go to Upland with me because I know that I've been impressed every time I go. Let's take my mom for instance: whenever she comes in to town, she demands we go to Texas Roadhouse. Recently, I managed to finagle it so she'd go to Upland with me. We both had the Fish and Chips. She took a bite of the fries, and then bent her head forward as if she was crying. I asked what was wrong; she replied "These are the best fries I've ever eaten." Now she requests we come here. I've been here a lot. The first time was on my birthday last year--the first anniversary of that is coming up. The Wheat Ale here was the first time I drank a beer and actually liked the taste. The orange at the bottom of the Wheat Ale? Tastes delicious soaked with the ale. I regularly get the fish and chips because the batter is amazing. Perhaps not quite as good as that at the Irish Lion, but the fries are superior to those at the Lion--so if you want Fish and Chips you should prioritize that. I wasn't too awe-inspired by the burgers, but you have to realize that my family raised beef cattle growing up, and I'm almost never impressed by burgers. The macaroni and cheese they have for dinner, though? Some of the best macaroni and cheese I have ever tasted. Their chicken tortilla soup, their buffalo chili, and their vegetable soup -- all are fantastic. Oh, and recently they added some ghost chili sliders -- basically, pulled pork sandwiches topped with ghost chili. SO good (and SO spicy, but that's why I love them). I loved those things. In fact, I love all their appetizers. I've never had a bad server at Upland. The decor is good. There's something about the acoustics of the place, though, that makes every conversation immediately loud, so you could be in there with two other people whispering and the place will sound like a loud and crowded pub on a Friday night with a game on. 10 different Upland beers were on tap. I had the Bad Elmer's Porter and the Loner IPA. Great beer and vegan/vegetarian options. There were three of us. Two of us had Joel's BBQ Seitan. Tasted great. Came with fries, I wish I had tried the chips. The other person had the "Classic" burger. He really enjoyed the burger. Very tasty, cooked well. It was a little jammed to get into the Brew Pub. The line was out the door. They had available tables, just slow in getting people seated. The hostess was pulling double duty, busing the tables so she could seat people. The service was great.
