Absolutely one of our favorite places to eat when we are visiting Chico. Across the board, the sandwiches, soups, sweets are all delicious! My favorite is the "Not a Reuben" and it's hard to get out of there without picking up at least a cookie or two. The bakery was pretty busy but the line moved quickly. The service was okay, nothing exceptional but granted it was busy and there were a lot of people asking for different things (a doggie bag, a cup of water, etc). I had an opportunity to try cookies from the Upper Crust. Not only were they a "stand out" in presentation they were as delicious as they looked. The frosted leaf cookies were beautifully iced not only with fall colors but embellished beyond what I expected. Okay this is my go to coffee/sweets spot, love this place. Jocelyn helped me today (absolute angel) didn't make me feel like I was bothering her once and helped me decide on what I wanted without making me feel pressured at all. Seems like she really enjoys her job and I absolutely adore establishments with employees with those qualities! I just moved to area. I loved this place until I purchased a birthday cake for my best friend. Her 75th I have loved everything I purchased up until this cake. It was the coconut cream cake. I purchased cake on 2/25, put in in refrigerator and took it out the next day 11/2 hr. Prior to serving. I could barely cut through it . Hard, dry and horrible to taste . Oh my goodness. Where to begin? I called a week ago to order a cake for my 12 year olds birthday. I told them what I wanted flavor wise, and when they asked me what the occasion was - I said something like "it's for my 12 year old sons birthday....so just no flowers. He likes purple....black.....he likes to skateboard.....you know. Typical boy. As long as it doesn't look super girly." I went to pick up the cake today, and could only see the top portion through the box. Just the writing and cool rock candy sprinkles looked fantastic! Super happy with that. Instructions on decorating the cake were completely disregarded. We asked them for witches and brooms on the side (there's nothing on the side). Was still charged an extra 15 dollars for some reason even though this charge has never been charged on the dozens of cakes we have bought here. Ridiculous. I am from Sacramento, so I had little first-hand knowledge of bakeries in Chico when it came time for my wedding cake. I happened to be in Safeway looking at wedding cakes when a woman came in panicked because Upper Crust had forgotten to do her baby shower cake. That was the first red flag. I ended up ordering my wedding cake for about 75-80 from Upper Crust. With delivery, it was almost $400. The designer, Jenni and the delivery person Rachel were great and the cake was simple and beautiful as I had requested. I had them decorate it with fresh flowers. It was delicious too. However, the person who took my order neglected to tell me that the top tier is traditionally frozen and the bottom two tiers (8' and 10') were NOT enough to serve 75. Basically, there was NOT enough cake at my wedding. I did not have cake as the bride. The groom did not get cake. My brother did not get cake. The poor guests who got cake received paper thin slices. I was horribly embarassed. I called Upper Crust almost immediately and spoke with the assistant manager. She explained they were understaffed and the store took full responsibility. I also wrote them a long email, to which they never responded. I will never, never, ever use Upper Crust for an important event again and would be very careful when ordering with them. You will need to double check and triple their work. I am very upset. read more

I'm giving this place 4-stars because our wedding and wedding anniversary experience was fantastic! However, dining at Upper Crust is not the greatest -- service can be slow and errors happen more often than they should. I get we're all human, but when it keeps happening it can be super frustrating. Cake Experience: When we cake tested for our wedding, the baker came out to show us exactly how a certain color would look on different frosting types. Also, they brought us out a custom sample that they normally didn't include on their sampling plate. We ended up getting a two tiered cake -- marble cake on the bottom and fresh strawberries with real whipped cream on the top. The cake was AMAZING! Since our cake was a tiny one (we did a dessert bar for our wedding with a cake for cutting), we ended up ordering one of their small cakes (I believe they call it a smash cake) for our anniversary of the Strawberries & Whipped cream cake. I was a bit delayed on ordering it, but it was quick turnaround (about 2 days since I called on the weekend). Now my husband isn't a big sweet person, but this cake was DEVOURED in minutes. Expectation: potty break for me and pups (while on road trip); a, hopefully healthy and even more hopefully vegan, quick to go brunch snack; a chai drink but figured I'd prob have to hit up Starbucks to get a decent one. Reality: front door parking under a shaded tree; plenty of patio seating, and in a safe neighborhood so I could tie up the pups to a table while I went inside for my potty break; so many delicious food and bev options, with plenty of healthy AND vegan options; TWO yummy chai options (Oregon or Chico, I had the Chico) that were wayyyy better than Sbucks; and a sweet and patient staff that dealt with my overwhelming joy and surprise. So we (I speak for my dogs, of course) decided to enjoy the breeze through the trees that line the road, and I enjoyed a WARM yummy crustless Florentine quiche that I could sit and enjoy. We recently order two pies from Upper Crust. We ordered a Banana Cream and an Apple Pie. We ordered the pies about a week prior to picking them up. Our pies were ready on our pick up day and the counter person was very nice. We refrigerated the Banana Cream Pie and the Apple Pie was at room temperature. The Apple Pie was very good but the Banana Cream pie filling was a very unusual ugly grey color. I can only assume that the bananas they used were too ripe and the bananas discolored the cream pie filling. The taste was ok however the color of the filling made it very unappetizing. We ate 3 pieces but threw out the remaining pie. read more

Had high hopes for this place and was disappointed. The place needs a good cleaning, especially the back wall where the microwave is located. I wanted to check this place out since I watched in on Triple D. Not sure what Guy saw in this place. I ordered the grilled cheese with turkey. They first gave it to me without the turkey. They fixed it though. The side of fruit seemed fresh. I also ordered the oatmeal cranberry nut cookie. It looked overdone and hard. I asked for them to warm it up in hopes that it will at least soften. A "bakery" should be able to make better cookies then that. My husband ordered the black bean chili and had to ask them to heat it up because it was warmish. The jalapeno cheese corn muffin & butter was also hard. The grilled cheese turkey sandwich was just alright. I only ate half of it. The black bean chili was ok. The soap in the bathroom smelled good so A+ for that. Sandwiches, salads, pastries, cookies - everything is perfect and I have likely tried everything - but the cinnamon rolls have ruined me for life. I can't visit Chico without stopping in for one of these sweet, gooey treats. With just the right amount of cinnamon and a little orange zest, I have never had a better pastry. If you want to try one get there early because they sell out fast. AND as a bonus for getting there early they're usually still warm from the oven! read more

Great place to grab a quick breakfast, lunch or pastry in a super relaxed environment. We came here for breakfast and for myself, my son and husband we paid $16, super affordable. I shared the oatmeal and vegan berry scone with my 2 year old and he loved both, as did I! I even took one to go. My husband ordered the breakfast sandwich, croissant with bacon. Is it fair to judge a bakery for just one loaf of bread? Knowing they sell several other items? Sure, why not? After all is said and done, bread can distinguish itself in a number of ways, enough to spike the reputations of talented bakers with the skills to pay the bills. I was offered just two bread options: Honey Wheat? and Sun-dried Tomato with Olives? Picked the latter for $7, after the young lady said she preferred the sun dried tomatoes which appeared a fair price. Young lady very pleasant, and when I asked if it could be sliced, she politely offered to do it but made no promises, just then the big bad wolf shunned the possibility, with a resounding "we don't do that here." Subject closed. Oh well, I marched out of there almost sold on the promise of a better bread. It was okey but not appealed in all areas. Sure, it is edible, but the experience fell short. Of course, one can slice it thin, and proceed to make a very special garlic bread, but solo would not meet the mark of specially good.
