1. We went in at 10:40. They stated breakfast ended at 10:30 and lunch started at 11:00 so we had to go for a walk to kill some time for the lunch menu. No seating with coffee or at least water was offered for the wait. 2. They pored steaming hot water for tea into a pint glass with no handle. The basic pint with see through glass that turned the whole cup steaming hot almost instantly. When I asked for a new one with a handle ( like a coffee or tea cup)the girl at the coffee bar poured it all over the sides of the cup. 3. The food was horrible. It looked really nice at the counter, but the salad I ordered was basic and the bread was hard. Horrible experience all around. For the 22 years I've been local to here Upper Crust has been my favorite bakery. The cakes are absolutely delicious and there is a great selection of baked goods. I like the pre made deli options for lunch and love that there are so many vegetarian options. However the unfriendly customer service and the unkemptness of the dining area/bathroom are now deterrents for me. It's not pleasant to sit there anymore. I hope they make some changes! read more

I Special Ordered a Birthday Cake with Buttercream frosting and got "Whipped cream" frosting. There Really is a Big Difference between the two ... Birthday girl was disappointed. The excuse I was given was that "sometimes our Buttercream is light" Nope, not an acceptable excuse ... Whipped and Buttercream are at opposite ends of the spectrum ... Consistency is important! A Chico local highly recommended this place and goes here often so we had to stop by before walking to Farmers Market. The VRBO house we stayed in was just under a mile away and the walk to beautiful downtown Chico was great. What an awesome bakery! This place reminded me a lot of Eddies Bakery in Fresno but with a bit more savory items in the display case. There was so much I wanted to try but this was just a quick stop before the market and then lunch reservations a few hours later. The pumpkin spice latte I had was excellent. Very fast service. The fresh butter croissant was also delicious. At 9am on a Saturday it was busy but not crowded. The display case was packed with so many delicious looking baked treats and a lot of great lunch / brunch items. Wish I would have gotten a quiche or deviled egg to go , they looked so tasty! We actually did go back that same afternoon! I had a chocolate chip cookie and cherry mini cheesecake--both amazing. By 3pm or so a lot of the baked goods and lunch brunch items were cleaned out but there was still plenty to choose from. They sell local artists work in the sitting area, very delightful place. I love their food options here so much--sweet and savory for something to cater to everyone. I'm weak for their cupcakes and quiches, especially their individual size carrot cake. I've grabbed their pies and cheesecakes for family gatherings, and there are no leftovers by the end of the day. Company that I've brought here have said positive things about their sandwiches too. Sometimes I'll grab an espresso drink to drink with my baked good, but would rather go elsewhere for coffee if that was the only thing I was getting. First timer! This place was so delicious. I will be back when visiting again. I had a delicious warmed croissant with bacon, egg, cheese & tomatoes! I ordered a 16 ounce matcha latte with oat milk and an extra scoop of matcha. Matcha is my favorite! I order it at all the coffee shops in California, or when I travel. Fresh cake, macarons, quiches, sandwiches, soups, and everything made in house! I only went in for coffee, and while I did have to wait in line to order behind people who wanted food, I did realize it wouldn't make sense to have separate lines so no complaints there! Plus it gave me a chance to drool a bit and dream about tasting everything I saw! The portion sizes are insane! Cinnamon roll was almost the size of my head. Seriously! As far as my coffee goes I just got a small Nitro Cold Brew! I was pleasantly surprised! It stood out to me. Not as punch you in the face strong as some I have had, and a bit of a nutty flavor to me. I highly recommend them for all your cake and pastry needs! They did a phenomenal job on my grand daughter's 1 yr bday cake. I literally sent them a picture off of pinterest and they nailed it! The cake was super delish and everyone loved it. For lunch I highly recommend their black bean and pesto nachos. I'm obsessed with them, they are SO good. I always get excellent cakes from upper crust but this was disappointing. I ordered this cake Tuesday, they told me it would be ready by 10 AM Saturday. I get there Saturday at 11 and it's not done, so I say it's fine take your time I'll wait, Which by the way I drove over half an hour to pick this cake up. And so I get the cake and this is what I get.. a poorly done rushed cake, over the phone I told them I wanted something nice and elegant for a 50th birthday, so they give me brown, red and some dried flowers that look like dried strawberries.. this is so sad and disappointing, I didn't go back because they were truly busy and I felt bad but in all honesty I figured whoever decorated this, there was no telling what they would've even done to fix it.. super disappointing will not come back for cakes. read more

A friend brought us a loaf of the Orange Tea bread. Four different people tried it; we all hated it. Too dark, too dry. Threw it away. Decided to try the bakery/cafe ourselves in person. My half turkey sandwich was large, but was so dry (despite the chipotle chutney and mustard and had so little meat I couldn't believe it (for $13+). So much bread, so little meat. (I'm not a big meat eater AT ALL, so to say it had very little meat it really had very little meat). The side fruit salad consisted of hard canteloupe melon and hard honeydew melon. That's it! It's summer!! Throw in a strawberry or two! I was still hungry so decided to get a cookie to eat and one to go. Both were hard and stale. What a disappointment this place turned out to be. There is a lot of space in front of the lengthy pastry cases, which were still filled with goodies when I arrived. There were multiple seating areas and free wifi available. Service was quick and friendly, if a little scattered with all the moving people. Had a great sando and baked goods. My sandwich was a roasted chile and grilled chicken. While those peppers were just a bit too spicy for my taste, the goat cheese wasn't quite enough to cut out that bite. The tomato was fresh, but lettuce a little sad. Chicken was grilled nicely and had lots of flavor. For dessert, I had a russian tea cookie, which included lots of big walnuts. Also got a flourless chocolate cake was rich and fudgy, but a bit too solid. Rich flavors and tasty pastries make Upper Crust a place you should try next time in downtown Chico. read more

With a sweet-tooth wanting something to satisfy itself, the hunt was on to find a unique place for baked goods to which my group landed here. The exterior sticks out amongst neighboring businesses with their wooden walls, large viewing windows, and an optional patio area. The front door isn't a front door as it leads to a main hallway that split's into a "Y". To the left: seating for plenty with wooden chairs/tables and local art lining the walls. To the right: the counter/ordering area where three displays and blackboard menus coax people into a sweet dream. Cakes, cookies, pies, hot food, cold food, vegan, gluten-free, etc. They have everything. The staff waste no time in getting your order, but since it was my first time I felt a bit rushed even as I let others go ahead. Nothing too bad, but I wanted to see everything since the sweets took up two of the three display cases. In the end I decided on a chocolate-dipped orange cookie and a flourless chocolate tarte. Overall, they were fine. The orange cookie was a dry, but had a pleasant orange flavor that was complimented with its chocolate-covered half. The tarte was a dense and semi-sweet thing that needed a bit more sweetness. It was like an extremely thick bittersweet chocolate mousse. In the end, it wasn't bad as it scratched my sweet tooth, but it wasn't a place that left me wanting to come back. The cozy atmosphere was cut by a slight rush from the staff, but the place itself is great to just gather and chat. Ewwww.... I ordered a sandwich but not sure what I got I wanted a sandwich without any meat so I said vegan or vegetarian either one she wrapped up a sandwich for me and rang me up. It looked pretty. I also ordered a frosted Matcha tea latte it was over $18.!!!?! Well the Matcha tea was very good however the sandwich was disgusting absolutely putrid I could not eat it. It was stuffed with fancy lettuce which was large leafs, super soft, nasty then it got worse from there. the sandwich was stuffed with olives!!! oh my God I hate absolutely hate olives!!!! they taste like barf to me. I opened up the sandwich, to take them out and see what was in it. Couldn't get them out they were chopped up and scooped in. just nasty lettuce olives and some tomatoes.... oh hell I forgot there was onions to keep the mood going....(if you wanna get a divorce just serve this to your man, I kid you not) I barley can stand tomatoes and they have to be skimpy but these were thick azzzz juicey horrible tomatoes smothered in grotesque olives.... it was like a sandwich from a horror movie. The butter cream was the best I've ever tasted and lemon filling cake was loved by everyone. Several people said they don't usually like cake, but came back for seconds.
