This place is amazing. So many baked goods. I make a point to visit this place at least twice when I visit KC. I usually get the banana cookies (which is are bascially cake like banana flavored cookies with amazing frosting on top) and small apple pie. I mean who can say no to adorable apple pies? If you can walk into Upper Crust Bakery and not come away with a cookie, slice of pie or both, you've got a will like Bruce Lee. This is top-of-the-line baked goods here, folks. I could write a five star review on the cookies alone; the shortbread cookies weigh about as much as a light dumbbell and are loaded with flavor. The coconut macaroons are perfection, as are the oatmeal raisin, peanut butter, and lemon sugar. Even if you prefer to bake things on your own, you'd love Upper Crust because it's a reminder of how it's done. Their friendly staff here backs up the friendly fun vibe they have going on in here. It's the kind of place that draws you in as you walk by the screen door and pie roller handle. I've had my share of their pies as well and you cannot go wrong - personal fav would have to be the Key Lime. What's cool about Upper Crust is that this specific location sits on the Main Street of Downtown OP and really helps tie the area together. I can't believe I haven't left a review for The Upper Crust before! Well I know part of the reason and that's because I usually eat my pie before I get a picture of it. This place is simply wonderful. The Upper Crust is a locally owned business making pie the way pie was intended. Each day they have a selection of pies that can be served by the slice and quiche as well. Pies can be bought whole or get a mini pie, the options are endless! Not to mention they have a selection of delish cookies and some super cute gifts. In non-covid times I loved coming in and getting a slice and some coffee and just hanging out for awhile. Since covid, the Upper Crust has done a great job at pivoting to maintain safety by reducing the number of customers in store, requiring masks, plastic partitions, and carry-out only. When I was living out of state, this was always a must-stop when I came back to the KC area. I can't wait until I can dine-in again, but until then I'll happily take my slice to go. read more

Pie so good it'll make you weep. And even better, it's served in an adorable little store. If buildings had cheeks, you'd definitely want to pinch these. For my money, there is no better pie than lemon meringue, and The Upper Crust makes a fantastic one. The meringue is so tall and swooping, it resembles something out of a Dr Seuss book. The filling is creamy and tart, and the crust is just delightfully flaky. Eating this pie is a religious experience. That's not to say the other options aren't amazing as well. I'm sure they are, I just never really get them. When I've gone with groups, however, everybody is raving about their individual selections, so someday I MAY attempt to branch out. This super cute storefront is located in old Overland Park and and as soon as you walk in, there's no question about what they serve. It's decorated in a quaint, vintage-style that made me feel like I was sitting in my grandma's kitchen. There were even REAL flowers at each table! I chose a single serving cherry pie and my friend got the single serving bumbleberry pie. The cherry pie was delicious! The crust was flaky and light and the cherries were the perfect blend of sweet and tart. This had to be one of the best cherry pies I've ever had. Besides my grandma's, of course. I watched some delicious looking peach pies being prepared in the back and will definitely be back for one of those. I didn't eat the strawberry one but I also had a coconut macaroon because it was calling my name as I was checking out and OMG it was still warm and I had to stop to chew because it was that good. This is good pie. I really like the little shop on the bottom floor of Pryde's market. So I had to try this place. When I showed up at 3pm on Saturday everything was gone except gooseberry, blueberry, peach, and rhubarb. I wanted coconut, oh well. I settled for my favorite pie, gooseberry(although I was really in the mood for coconut and had psyched myself out for coconut all day). Gooseberry pie was very good. Gooseberry should be very sour. Each berry should be distinct and hold its integrity under cooking but not raw. This filling delivered. Most homemade and Amish gooseberry pies I've had fill the filling with sugar and cook it down until it is nothing more than a gooseberry jam. No good. This pie hit the mark. Crust was light and flaky, very good. My wife and daughter had peach and blueberry. They wanted apple. There was no apple. Peach and blueberry pies were very good as well. It's good pie, not the best I ever had, but good. It's small box. They run out of pies early. I get it. Just get there early if you want a specific flavor. The staff was very friendly. It's a small, quaint location with outdoor furniture placed inside. It is a clean place. Worth a stop to explore this area. The farmers market is located here too. I never considered myself a big pie lover but I kept hearing good things about this place so decided to give it a try! The first time I got here it was close to closing, so the only options left for "by the slice" were gooseberry and rhubarb which would be the least 2 I would have picked out but since it's all that was left, I went with them. I ate them at home later and was in complete shock! These were the best pies I have ever had in my life, hands down! The crust was excellent and the fillings were the perfect balance of sweet and tart. I came back today with my husband who is not a big sweets person and we both loved the brown sugar buttercream pie! Give me a break. $28 for those sorts of pies!?! I used to pay $40 for pies from Lenexa's "Pie Lady," but she died or closed or something - doesn't exist anymore. But, boy oh boy, did that woman make some pies! I would have given her $50 per pie - and worked an hour a day for free, cleaning rolling pins. If still open, upper crust couldn't have ever existed. I tried four pies from Upper Crust, to gauge their abilities - but also gorge on pie. I would price their pies at worth just over $12 each, and that's being generous - scoring high marks for their ubiquitous and flaky wonderful crust recipe, but nothing else. Their flavor development across the board seems to barely miss the high notes of each of their respective flavor profiles, and that's where it counts the most. The Chocolate Cream is overtly sweet, and lacking entirely the depth and complexity of it's exotic namesake. With no rich cacao chemistry to be found within, this is simply a flavor-neutral, sweet-cream pudding pie that concomitantly happens to be brown. The Apple is balanced with such a gentle crust, and tastes of apple to be sure, but nutmeg is a major player in this pie. I appreciate the "Americanized Pie of Freedom" flavor as much as the next patriot, but nutmeg should take a limited role in the backseat with other shady characters such as allspice. Nutmeg seems to be covering for something that the apple flavor wasn't man enough to do alone. I'll have none of that mischief. The Bumbleberry is without a second thought a mimic of that "crumble" we all make at home with assorted berries, some butter, flour, and twenty minutes of indignity at 425 degrees. I've made this "crumble" a thousand times, and it usually comes together out of pure desperation to satiate my sugar addiction. It's fast, dirty, and embarrassing - but I eat it in shame nonetheless. That atrocity of culinary desperation costs me $1.17 in berries, and a modicum of pride - I'll not give someone else nearly $30 to shame mother nature in the same way. The Cherry pie tastes exactly like a cherry pop tart, and that's either a wonderful thing, or an enabling indignity perpetuated upon a populous of adult-baby people with too much money and not enough food culture. It's definitely the most interesting of those I tried, but certainly not worth the price of memory lane. Though handsome, I'll find pies of equal quality - or often, better - inside a Tippin's case at any reputable grocery store, and for thirty percent the price. Homemade doesn't matter if it isn't interesting, and those pies lacked a soul. For the best pie I've ever had, Somerset Hall cafe is a veritable lesson in the American tradition of pie making - best pie in America 2008. Upper crust - like it's name supposes - seems to exist in rarified air above reality, where $300 pants, artisan oil, and hand-bag sized dogs are considered commodities. I like my pies handmade, rich of depth and flavor - a little messy - and hauntingly bad for me. We are still talking about desserts steeped in butter and sugar, right? read more

I know what heaven smells like and I can smell it on earth when I walk into The Upper Crust Bakery! This beguiling and delectable bakery may have got its start at Pryde's in Westport, but when you walk into the Overland Park shop, it just feels like its been a mainstay in the neighborhood. The bakery is very cute with a lot of personal touches. One of my favorites is that they used a rolling pin as the handle on the door when you exit. The pies are great! But I think what I enjoy the most at the chocolate chip cookies. Bakers at The Upper Crust have managed to make the edges of the cookies crispy and keep a soft, chewy center. They are fantastic! I also like that this bakery goes well beyond the standard pies. The first time I went into the bakery in Overland Park, my husband was with me. He loves what he calls: "old man pies." This includes flavors like Sour Cream Raisin. So, he was pretty excited to see it as an option. We haven't ordered one yet, but my guess is that it is a matter of time. I think we'll need to see if the bakery can make the Sour Cream Raisin in the Cutie Pie version, which provides one to two servings, as opposed to the Full-Size Pie, which has six to eight servings. read more

The one we received was very light in color on the bottom and not very sturdy compared to the filling but overall great. Would absolutely get another pie from here and ask for a longer bake. My husband brought home a dozen assorted cookies and a rhubarb pie last night for my Mother's Day gift (he's a keeper). Rhubarb pie is my favorite and it's hard to find. I don't mind paying 30 bucks for a pie if it's tasty. Unfortunately, I've tried them twice and just don't care for their food. I adore rhubarb pie in particular and was told I needed to try theirs. My family and I were those people that arrive just minutes before close (we blame it on the lack of parking in Downtown Overland Park).
