I come here once every couple of weeks, and order the two slices and soda fountain combo. Prices are decent, and there's nothing really special about the pizza - thin wheat crust, topped off with zesty tomato sauce, greasy cheese, and some random toppings. This pizza chain is a shameless rip off of Sweet Tomatoes, but at the end of the day, who cares. No one complains of the frozen yogurt knockoffs that stemmed from Pinkberry and Red Mango (i.e. Berryline in Cambridge). I think the most notable aspect to the Upper Crust is the simple fact that Jack Welch (retired CEO of General Electric) raves about it incessantly. What everyone seems to forget is that Mr. Welch has had more heart attacks and bypass surgeries than Dick Cheney. Any pizza joint that can still keep Neutron Jack coming back is surely a good thing. I would normally give this place 2 stars, but I gave an extra star for the founder and owner Jordan Tobins. Granted Tobins has no integrity, and is far from a visionary, but he is a ruthless and successful entrepreneur. I'm sure the Latin American community isn't too fond of him, but I'm pretty sure his top line growth isn't coming from this demographic. The only thing I hold against Tobins is his careless decision to hire Boston's premier sleazy spin doctor George Regan. Hiring King George was an obvious admission of guilt, but heck, we all can't be perfect. The next time I drop by the Upper Crust, I'll be sure to show my unwavering support of Tobins and his empire by ordering two pizza combos. read more

The upper Crust is right around the corner from my house. I can walk for a quick snack, or have a slice before a movie at the Theater. Slices are about 2.50 each, but are huge, usually about twice the size of a normal slice. The pizza is so crunchy and just fantastic, I can get a variety of slices and split them with my girlfriend and have a great dinner there, they have at least two flat screen TV's, and also wifi, or I can walk my slices home. They have great specialty slices so check in daily to see what they have mixed up... read more

I keep wanting to give Upper Crust another chance. Their pizza, when hot, is arguably the best in Boston, but I've only gotten the pleasure of experiencing that once. The first time I called to order Upper Crust they told me they were no longer delivering (at 8 PM on Friday night) and promptly hung up on me. Uno got my business that night. The second time I called, I was treated to very abrupt service on the phone, but a hot, yummy pizza 45 minutes later. The third time, abrupt service again and a cold pizza 2 HOURS after I called the first time. This is pretty unacceptable to me, but I thought it was a fluke and gave them another shot. Fourth time didn't get me a better attitude when ordering and put the nail in the Upper Crust coffin. 2 1/2 hours, I waited for that pizza, and when it arrived, freezing cold with congealed, hardened cheese, it was COVERED in mushrooms. I despise mushrooms. After informing the delivery guy of all these issues, he told us we'd get a free pizza the next time if we mentioned his name and the situation. No thanks. First of all, what business is really going to believe me if I call and tell them that? Second of all, I don't even think a free pizza is worth waiting 2 hours. Upper Crust, you have such potential. The pizza here is tolerable, though with so many other options I don't understand why people go here. However, my friends and I were permanently turned off from the Upper Crust after a Groupon incident. Several of us came here for dinner, and a friend brought a Groupon that was about to expire. The cashier was having book-keeping issues and really didn't want to let us use the Groupon because it had already been marked as used--- I'm assuming they mistakenly marked the wrong Groupon record since my friend definitely hadn't used her Groupon at all. The main reason we went in the first place was to get rid of the Groupon, since there are so many great restaurants in Coolidge Corner we would have much rather gone elsewhere in the first place. The cashier ended up making a big scene about it and was really insistent we were being fraudulent; honestly, we're not that desperate for less than $20 worth of pizza, and it was pretty insulting. I ordered from here for dinner this evening after looking for nearby restaurants. I hadn't heard about any excellent pizza places in the area, but figured I'd give this place a shot. Unfortunately, I was disappointed with the quality here. The Pru was rather bland, with chicken and broccoli that looked and tasted like artificial cafeteria-quality toppings. I've been meaning to write a review on this for some time. Unfortunately a Boston.com article about the chain's use and mistreatment of illegal workers reminded that I meant to write a review. I'm just noting the article in case it matters to you. To me, while their actions do suck, it's pretty hard these days to find a restaurant that doesn't use illegal immigrant workers, of which most of them are being exploited in some way. That said, let's talk pizza. Let's talk about how their pizza pretty much sucks as much as their treatment of illegal workers. Actually I should say let's talk about their pound of salt served with a side of pizza. I love pizza. I really love pizza. I read the Slice blog. I travel to other states to try pizza. When I'm really craving good pizza (or a real calzone, please Boston, learn how to make a calzone, it's not a pizza folded over), I will drive back home to Brooklyn, pick some up and drive back in the same day. I still remember the phone number of the best pizza I've had in Dallas (972-530-1975, Caprissi's, formerly known as Brothers Pizza). Pizza is an awesome thing. I've ordered from Upper Crust about 6 times, each time thinking that maybe it was an off day and that the salt used was just out of whack in that one instance. But after the last time, I realized that it was the norm and that I don't like my lips being sucked dry of their moisture. If you're in the area and want pizza, my recommendation is to either drive 5 minutes on Beacon taking the outbound side (or take the C line to Cleveland Circle) and get Pino's. Pino's is pizza. If you want gourmet pizza, then go to Fig's in Beacon Hill. But personally, I'll take a traditional slice over gourmet any day. read more

When I first moved to Boston, this was the only place I'd order pizza from before I discovered T Anthony. I moved on long ago, but... Now that I know better, I don't know how many Crying Game showers it'll take to scrub off the guilt and shame I feel about giving these people my money. For all the hype about this place I think I missed something. I have gone a few times and never have I left saying, "WOW this place is really great" or "WOW this place is good" or "WOW this place is okay". I usually leave and say, "why the hell did I go here again". There is a general rule about restaurants, be consistent at what you are good at. For a pizza place that is supposed to be great at pizzas, they missed. It's been burned, usually greasy and just nothing special other than they have convenient locations. There is some great pizza in Boston and New England but Upper Crust is not part of that group. Don't waste your time here. read more

However, you are not deserving of this publicity and patronage, especially Phantom Gourmet foolishly labeling you as the "best pizza in Boston." Clearly, the folks over there need to explore Boston a little more before airing such outlandish remarks. As one Yelper has suggested, maybe Yelp-TV is a more appropriate and credible solution. Sure, I'll concede that the quality of your pizza is not bad, but I most certainly have tasted better. Or, "Meh. I've experienced better." My biggest beef with you is that the cost to get a large pizza delivered, after tip and such, was over $20.00. $20.00... for a very thin pizza barely making mention of the ricotta I excitingly ordered to delight my craving. To meet my value expectations, the large would have to be around 30" and feed me for a week (but, I'd probably still settle for bread and nutella). Why should I disrespect my wallet, my taste buds, and my stomach in such a way.... No, I simply won't do that again. I have so many more promising options (such as my list of "Best Pizza in Boston"). Ok, here's the deal, they must put crack in the crust. The empire has expanded with lovely little food minions trailing behind. Look how the empire has grown, from one little place in Beacon Hill to now a mighty conglomerate of at least 10 locations. 6 have opened since I started living in Boston a couple years ago. Two things: The pizza is getting expensive. I get the quality ingredients and it does taste good but a slice of pizza and a beer should not be 12 dollars unless you are at a ballgame. Second, the crust has slowly but surely become more thin much like the amount of toppings. If you want a real treat, order either New York Pizza in the South End or Penguin on Huntington. Oh man. The crust is so good. It achieves the perfectly, heavenly balance between thin crust and fluffy crust. A slice is almost $4 and a large specialty price runs up to around $21. Totally worth the price, the wait, the hike, whatever. My roommate had a Groupon for this place (she bought 5 of them. She loves upper crust and pizza that much) so we ordered a large Swellesley pie. Chorizo and really flavorful parmegiano reggiano on top. We almost killed the entire pie. The pie only took around 20 minutes to make. My second experience was at the BU location on Comm Ave. It was 3pm on a Sunday so the place was virtually empty. I got a slice of the daily special (chicken and pesto) and it was DELICIOUS. We liked it so much we bought an extra slice to split. Unfortunately, after 15 minuets of waiting, we asked where our slice was and she said she *forgot*. How can she forget if we were the only people in the room? P.S. You can only order their specialties by pie. Which sucks, but I understand why since it wouldn't be worth it to sell 20 different kinds of pies by the slice. P.P.S. The only slices you can get are cheese, pepperoni and slice of the day. Upper Crust was one of those places that people used to cheer about. And it was everywhere. But something happened on the way to such expansive success. The pizza is neither great nor terrible, but it certainly isn't praiseworthy and it has negative next-day eatability, which is a defining characteristic for any slice of pizza. The Greek Salads are actually pretty good and they serve beers which is a plus. This location has been around for a while and is often frequented by the local Brooklinites on their way to the Coolidge Corner theater. This past weekend I happened upon a strange encounter outside this store when a guy chatting outside of the store with his friend, who appeared to be the manager of the store, bumped into a guy walking down the street with his family. I don't think either person was at fault but then this guy who may or may not be an employee at the store starts staring down menacingly at the unsuspecting pedestrian as if he wanted to start a fight mid-day in Coolidge Corner. It was like a scene from the Discovery Channel, except happening in suburban Brookline. A very unusual scene but given all of the problems Upper Crust has had of late, maybe a little better community engagement might serve them well and reconsidering some questionable associated characters with the store is in order. read more

On a Monday evening in early December (no weather issues), I ordered by phone 2 pizzas for delivery. I finished the order and the credit card cleared at 6:55. They said 40 minutes to an hour. The pizzas arrived at 8:40, 1-3/4 hours later. They were of course dead cold. Also, I told them I wanted lots and lots of sausage topping on one of the pizzas and in order to get that I was ordering that pizza with 3 toppings, and I would pay for 3 toppings, each of them sausage. What arrived was a pizza with just one topping of sausage (not very generous to begin with). We were literally cheated out of the price of 2 of the sausage toppings, but when it is delivery you can't send it back to the kitchen to fix it. read more

The pizza here is nothing extraordinary (contrast with review of Santarpio's in East Boston), but I come here often because of the convenient location next to Coolidge Corner Theatre. If there were some other pizza place at this spot, I would still get pizza from there. This means Upper Crust is really nothing special, it's just that my laziness for hot pizza while watching a movie greatly overpowers my desire for truly incredible pizza. The pizza crust is really thin and the sauce somewhat runny, which translates into soggy pizza if it sits for too long. Not ideal for delivery situations. Because of this combination, I would recommend eating the pizza at Upper Crust or said movie theatre. It is RIGHT next door, which gives you plenty of time to pick up your order, head over to the theatre, find a seat, and begin eating before the crust disintegrates on the paper plate of tomato juice. But remember, that window of eating opportunity for nice, hot pizza before it becomes soggy, wet mess is approximately 5 minutes. You've been warned... read more

Oh Upper Crust, why did you fail me? The first time I had pizza from here I was floored by how delicious it was. Cut to last night, my friends and I are debating what to get for our night in and I suggest Upper Crust thinking it'd be just as good as the first time I had it. We decided on ordering a large patata rosa pizza, a salad, and a calzone. We tried to order online but were told that they didn't deliver to us (we were about a mile away), so we called to check if they delivered to our area. They did! We placed our order and were told that it would be about 45 minutes to an hour before it came. So we waited, and we waited, and we waited. I didn't really pay attention to exactly how long it took to arrive, but I can assume it was sometime in that timeframe. When it finally came we descended upon the pizza like vultures, only to find out it was COLD. We waited an hour for a COLD pizza. Not only was it cold, it was incredibly burnt too. Needless to say, I was extremely unimpressed but given that I was ravenous I ate it anyways. Going forward I won't be likely to order from here again and definitely won't recommend it to anyone. It only gets two stars because I still can't shake how delicious it was the first time. read more

I do really like the pizza here! Sometimes it depends on who is in the kitchen, though. The slices are huge and the special slices of the day and week are creative and delicious. The staff are really kind and accommodating and the atmosphere is laid back. The one thing I have to say is that over $5 is a lot for a slice. They now have wings that they are perfecting. Regional manager Rami makes some of the best wings I have ever had. Those available now are not quite the same as the ones he has made on a whim, though. Hopefully his original recipes will take the place of those wings offered now. In the meantime, it's a great next step. The beer selection is also great! read more

It was basically bland pita bread. It wasn't horrible... but it wasn't good either. Just bite the freakin' bullet and worry about the health risks later. The Upper Crust is pretty good. I like that they offer take out for a single slice. The best thing is how cheap the pizza is. Judging from the cost, I thought I would need two slices. When I was handed them, I realized that even one was a lot to handle for me. Altogether, the pizza is good. I personally like thicker crust pizza, since to me thats the best part. I've had a couple experiences with upper crust and some have been amazing and some have been - eh. I ordered a half veggie/half some sort of meat pizza at one in brookline and liked it - but not enough to shell out the 25.00 I paid for it - again in the future. We then ordered some at work from the one in Cambridge - and maybe becausae I was ordering with more experienced people with upper crust - it was amazing! We ordered a half 3 cheeses and half fresh mozzerella and tomato pie. Both slices were GREAT. Now I will order from upper crust again because of that experience - but I still think their pies are a bit overpriced for what you're getting. read more
