On the scalp bleach under heat
Ester O.

This review is for Ciara Newbury. I am a platinum blonde and came in for a root touch up. My appointment was at 8:30 AM. I arrived on time and explained to her that usually 20 volume lifts me light enough to tone to be a platinum blonde all over. I had an inch of grow out and she proceeded to tell me that she will use 30 v with how dark my natural hair is AND put me under the heater. I explained to her that my stylist usually uses 20 and get me to a level 10 and does not use heat as the scalp generates heat already. We also talked about going under the heat and I was adamant that heat will NOT be used on a on the scalp bleach because it dries out the bleach and is damaging to the hair. She did not respect my decision due to timing issues because she had a client at 10 AM. When she came to check on my hair, I told her that the bleach hasn't lifted to a pale yellow and that she needs to leave it on longer and she refused to listen to me and told me that she has to rinse my hair out now because she booked a client at 10 AM. She does not care about preserving hair integrity. She rushed my hair, it did not LIFT light enough to put the toner on. She did not listen to me when I told her what works for my hair AND she said she didn't have time to blow dry my hair and told me to leave the salon with wet hair. To any hair stylist reading this please Listen to your clients! To any client don't be afraid to stand up for yourself, at the end of the day it's your hair and you're the one that has to live with the breakage.

Highlights by Vanessa at Urban Colorz

I tried this salon for the first time today. Vanessa Fowler was awesome! She gave me great highlights and a cute cut. She was very knowledgeable about how to slowly transition my hair to eventually be silver (vs brown, blond, and zebra striped gray). I'm a fan and will be back!

I had a fantastic experience here! As a curly girl, I was so scared to try a new hair stylist but I had heard great things about this salon so I decided to go for it. Kerri has been doing hair for 26 years so I felt like she would be most experienced with my fine 2B curls. I have to say that I am so pleased with how it turned out! I was scared at first because I had her straighten my hair after cutting and it was shorter than I expected. I finally let it go natural after 2 days and I'm in love! So bouncy and light but still good enough length for my square-ish shaped face. The scalp massage during wash was definitely a plus. I'll be going back to see her for sure!

Charged over 300 for balayage and toner. Only got 25 off the cost because they messed up and made an obvious line across my hair line. It wasn't what I wanted and took over 6 hours since they had to recolor a few times. I ended up having to tone my hair by myself because my hair was so uneven and just a mess. Before getting my hair done, I showed them a picture of what I was going for and was told, "The pictures you see online take a long time to achieve and it's just not realistic" An excuse of not being able to achieve what your customer asked for and is paying for?

How my hair looked :(

I had my hair done with Ciara D and came out disappointed. I've come to this location many times with other stylists and have never had a cut where my hair is not styled at the end. This time I walked out with half straightened hair and looked like I had just rolled out of bed. I was actually shocked that she was okay with letting me walk out that way. My appointment was at 9am and I walked out of the salon at 9:45. I felt like for $65 she should have spent the last 15 minutes styling it. I am honestly so bummed out about this experience that I probably won't be back.

Black hair beware: I recently had a balayage and cut at Urban Colorz with Keli and I'm sorry to say I don't feel good about my experience or the $300 it cost me. My roots (still) look very grown out, I feel the placement of the balayage is inconsistent and the translation from dark to light is not gradual but drastic and harsh. I have black hair, get basically the same thing done every single visit, and have been seeing Casie for about the last 10 yrs, who is amazing with my hair. I very hesitantly saw Keli because I needed my hair done before vacation and Casie was booked. I was very specific about that I didn't want any lightening to start along my hairline around my face so as to avoid the "stripe" effect that happens very easily with my black hair, but that a few rows of hair back or not directly at the root around my face was fine. I showed photo example after photo example, of my hair from previous appointments at Urban Colorz, somewhere there was a disconnect. She still really missed the mark and did not meet my expectations. I was also very clear that I wear my hair up/back most of the time and it looking good up was expected. When I put my hair up, it looked like black hair with a light colored ponytail, not what I expected or wanted. I reached out and she graciously offered to have me back at no cost, unfortunately it's almost worse now as there is a more defined and drastic color difference between light and dark. She went over the already lightened pieces at the second appointment so they're now even lighter, even though when I asked while in the chair she said they wouldn't be and that she would tone them down; they are also a brassy undesirable color. Again not what I communicated I wanted. Having black hair it's been my experience that finding someone who can work with it and meet my expectations is a challenge hence my great hesitancy in seeing someone other than my usual stylist. So I offer this review as a cautionary tale to those seeking opinions.

They only have 2 job to do in my hair color and haircut but still after that you feel like theres nothing change. Over priced and the lady who did my hair is so lazy I show the inspiration picture but she didn't follow it. Waste of money

Balayage w/ stair step layers
Breyana G.

First visit here was on 4-19-19 and was disappointed overall. It seemed like the stylist was randomly placing the balayage rather than using any learned technique. She was a little vulgar, insensitive and unprofessional which I do not prefer. I joked for a few weeks that my layers were stair steps. (Left the salon with my hair curled and the stair steps were only visible when my hair was straight) Felt like a couple hundred dollars went to nothing. Scheduled another appointment about three weeks after. Went with a very blunt cut, full highlight with more of a balayage technique and was much happier with the results. Highly recommend Alijah. So another couple hundred dollars later I am happy with my hair- will add updated picture.

After seeing Stacy.

So I have come to this salon off and on for a few years now, and recently moved. I made the mistake of trying to find a hairdresser closer to my new home, and learned my lesson! I called the Urban Salon a few days after seeing this new hair dresser trying to get it fixed, and they quickly got me in to see Stacy C. She was so kind and made me feel at ease. She did an amazing job, and will from now on make the commute to see her. ** Also wanted to say I have seen Kerri and Keli previously throughout the years, and both ladies do an amazing job as well!

Balayage by Brittany
Catherina N.

I love Brittany! She was outgoing and easy to have a conversation with. You can tell she really cares about her clients. I booked a balayage with her and it seemed like there was some scheduling issue that caused me to wait, but it got worked out in the end. I've been to other salons and they've been too dark or too light, but Brittany was able to perfectly match the photos that I showed her. She's extremely kind and also gentle when washing hair, unlike some other aggressive salons I've been to. Her relative pricing is super affordable too. 10/10 recommend to anyone!

I…read morewent on Friday and it was pretty busy and they were behind cuz it was about a good 15-20 min wait. Front desk lady was real nice checking me in (but seemed confused about the whole yelp thing and read my email for a little while, as well as scheduling didn't seem to be all familiar with the yelp situation either which made making an appt super confusing since first time guests get the same free service they were offering for the yelp drawing- so it ended with a 'well first time guest get it free so it's the same thing' ) Once you walk back the hall way (in clackamas location) was super cool! It looked kinda castle like. The room it's self was rather small, not that a ton of room is needed but it did feel a little crowded. The walls and ceiling seemed a little outdated, but that honestly has nothing to do with the services itself, just not appealing to the eye, however they did tell me they are open every single day and just haven't had time to update. My technician, Alicia, was so amazing! Really nice, sweet, and explained everything to me. What she will do, how she will do it, why she was using certain things and so on. So this place uses a special European comfort wax, which is a gorgeous deep amethyst color and apparently is made specifically for this waxing company. It's a certain mix that supposed to make the wax more 'comfortable' . I figured it was just a hype but I was actually really surprised! It's a hard wax, which means no strips, it drys on your skin and hardens up to be ripped off. I've used many types of waxes and I felt like this wax was very.. fluffy?? Silky? Airy? I'm not sure how to describe it, but like you didn't really notice it going on. It seemed pretty flexible too so it didn't snap or break when being taken off. I would have enjoyed having a side my side comparison with another wax to see if what I thought in my head was real. Before waxing took place they wipe you down with an oil to keep the wax from sticking to your skin. Then after wipe you down with an oil to get any residue off and also an anti ingrown hair wipe. After a full 24 hours I was really surprised at how well the area looked. It wasn't irritated or sensitive. It all was totally normal. They offer deals too which I've never seen a wax place do- anything from buy X get Y free to unlimited waxing for the year, all discounted. I really enjoyed the experience and would love to try some more waxing. Update: Ive had plenty of waxes before and the grow out of always less than fun, especially near intimate areas. Grow back had been pretty similar as other places, BUT the months to follow have shown a real difference. Im not sure how to really explain it if you havent experienced it before. Ill just say results have been more than expected and better than other places i have been to (and a noticeably less amount of hair back)

I'm leaving a two-star review because, although the place itself is friendly and clean, my actual…read moreservice and overall experience were very disappointing. I'm rating the service I received, not the environment. The person who waxed me was kind, and the company's website says she has four years of experience. However, as someone who has been getting waxed regularly for over a year (about twice a month), I was honestly shocked by the quality of the service. During my appointment, the same area was waxed multiple times--far more than it should have been--which left my skin irritated. I chose not to point out the areas that were missed after the appointment because the same spots had already been waxed repeatedly and I didn't want to risk even more irritation. I checked out, said the service was okay, paid the usual $40, and left. When I got home, I had to tweeze about 16 hairs from my upper lip myself and heavily moisturize my skin to calm the irritation and redness. While the staff was kind and the space was clean, the quality of the work was extremely disappointing and far below what I expected from a professional service.

On the other hand the people running the place were super unprofessional and unfriendly. The person at the front desk was frantic that our appointment times were messed up. I even called the day before to confirm and when I arrived it still wasn't right. I wasn't even upset and she totally got flustered and made me feel a bit uncomfortable. The instructor on the floor was rude, unfriendly and spoke rudely to the others working with him, both the people working seemed to be snapping at eachother. Weird vibe, I was definitely not comfortable. I also witnessed 2 other "situations" with other customers while I sat and waited. I the students were great, services were quite pleasant but everything else, not so much!

When I tried one last time (I only wanted the original caller's name) and explained the situation and my frustration to the desk person, she was disinterested. The services are good enough but apparently the school does not teach its students on the floor how to deal with customers or topics of conversation that make them uncomfortable. This will not serve them well if they become employed in their industry of choice since hair salons are famous for saucy gossip, complaints about husbands, and all manner of confidential topics. I have worked as a writer on sexuality topics and the adult entertainment industry for some time. In fact, I learned about the school from a now retired instructor who interviewed me on their cable show back in the 1990s. I have never had a problem with a student or staff member... until last Friday when it would appear that a young woman expected me to read her mind. Had I known she was "freaked out" (the caller's words), I would have apologized and changed the subject or just been quiet. I wasn't given any of those courtesies. In fact, when I tried to find out who had called me that following Monday, my voice mail was ignored and my follow-up phone call (Thursday) placed on hold until the system disconnected after 20 minutes. Given this policy of unprofessionalism and refusal to provide basic information, I simply can not recommend it. There's no knowing what will trigger someone ill-prepared to self-advocate, no path toward extending an apology, and no accountability on the part of the staff. This is not how I hoped my long history with Phagan's to end, but here we are... and here is my revocation of recommendation. Fortunately, Portland has several alternatives. Prior to Phagan's, I was a customer of Beau Monde (longest running beauty school in the city) and may well return there. Portland also has Aveda Institute, Portland Beauty Academy, and Summit Salon. I'm sure there are others.
