I found this spot a couple years ago because of a friend who let me know they were offering gardening and chicken keeping classes. To say I fell in love is an understatement! They offer great classes on many things and I recently started taking their bee keeping series! Jennifer is an amazing teacher and everyone who works at the shop is friendly and knowledgeable. I didn't know about them until 2020 so all classes have been online but I haven't felt hindered by that. They are informative and interactive! I do look forward to the in person hive inspection class being offered again but I'm really impressed with how they adapted in the meantime! They have everything you need to help care for your backyard flock and hive and carry some great local products like fresh eggs and raw honey if you don't have room for your own chickens or bees. The biofuel oasis rocks! These women rock! They know so much about diesel cars, how to trouble shoot them, change the filters and hoses ets etc. If you have been by their new site on Ashby at Sacramento, they have been doing a lot of the construction work themselves, sawing concrete, tying rebar, painting etc etc. Every time I go in there I feel inspired to do more to change the world, for real! Oh and they sell biofuel at the going rate and they are about to have card lock pumps so you can pull in and pay with credit card. read more

Pulling in to the all-women co-op to fill 'er up with pure 100% veggie juice biodiesel is one of the best feelings ever. Not having to lift one finger to make the switch from regular diesel truly brings on the stoked feelings also. I went for the first time this weekend - just got my diesel a couple of months ago and have been meaning to make the switch for environmental reasons. I started with 5 stars -and wanted to give a good review, but cannot. Here are my deductions - each one star: 1. cost me $4.69 per gallon to fill my car, whereas dino-diesel has come down to $2.95 near me. I am all for stopping global warming, but a 60% premium is really a bit much, and after all, I'm still polluting, even with biodiesel. I realize they are a price-taker, but at these prices I may go back to bike and public transportation, or maybe city car share/zipcar. 2. there were 2 other customers when I got there, and the woman working was all freaked out and frazzled, and not friendly (imho). Is it that hard to find someone environmentally conscious and competent at the same time? And no, I'm not that demanding - just want to fill my car and go. 3. I paid in cash, but did not get my 10 cents per gallon discount. I did not think about it (remember it was my first time) but after I left and was halfway home I realized "hey, they did not give me my discount!" I guess you have to remember yourself and demand it - so don't forget if you pay with cash or check. So two stars left. Not sure if I'll go back - I will check their prices online and see if they get somewhere in the reasonable range, otherwise maybe I'll sell the car and go back to bike and BART. read more

What a fantastic place to get fuel for my diesel! It's not your average filling station. I wish there were more places like biofuel oasis in the world. Ethical fuel, plus everything from baby chicks to fermentation gear to greywater collection materials. What a great place! I live about a block or two away from here so I pass it on a daily basis. I personally don't use biofuel for my car but I was in search of local honey for my allergies. They were the first place I thought of when I went on my search and I was right!! I love the stores selection and products. I bought 16oz for $13 and was very happy with my purchase, tastes delicious! The woman was so friendly and welcoming which I also appreciated. I used to buy biofuel, back when they were on 5th st in a little garage, selling the basics, even took a class on how to change my fuel pump on my mercedes. the gals were super nice back then....what happened??? I went in there recently to buy organic chicken feed - not because they are the only providers, but because I had fond memories and love the idea of a local store with local owners, etc, etc, etc....but, although the gal was nice, there was a very condescending attitude about her (even my 14 year old noticed). I had some questions, I was curious, I mean urban gardening is the latest big thing and aren't we all excited to talk about it, share tips, etc?? Well, I am, and was pretty surprised at the woman's lack of enthusiasm to help me. I also, OBVIOUSLY, had a bum foot, and carrying a 50lb bag of feed was going to be a challenge - how come I had to ask for help? I will probably go back, because I love everything about the place, books, info, etc, and I really hope that the woman who was helping me, was just in a bad mood, cuz BioFuel Oasis, is such a great place!!! I only gave 3 stars for poor service, the quality of what's available is great. read more

They seem to be the best place in the area to get biodiesel for now, but there it is a little bit of a journey to get there from the Sunset whenever I need to fill up my car. As of this writing, word is that People's Fuel is trying to get a card lock biodiesel pump setup at Rainbow Foods. The mobile pumping station that People's Fuel has is nice, but sometimes doesn't work with my schedule (available for a few hours, 3 days a week), so I can fall back on Biofuel Oasis being open since they have better hours (which will improve when the new station opens up this summer). To the person complaining about biodiesel prices compared to petro-diesel prices, the explanation given in the Biofuel Oasis newsletter states that as the price of petro-diesel skyrocketed, demand for the then cheaper biodiesel jumped, causing supply problems, which then led to high prices (almost $5/gal) for biodiesel as well. I was told that People's Fuel and Biofuel Oasis get their biodiesel from the same source, so the prices should be the same either way you go. The women that work at Biofuel Oasis have always been helpful and friendly, and my first visit was very welcoming. As I was filling out my registration form, the attendant told me how things work there, plugged the fuel filter workshops they hold, and warned me about problems some people have had when switching to biodiesel. Since the previous owners of my car ran biodiesel, I didn't have to worry about clogging my fuel filter, but she warned me not to switch between ULSD and biodiesel as it can cause damage to the injection pump. the only game in town, but i've been happy to support them for years. awkward at times when some people can't figure out how to queue up for the single pump, but that should be changing soon as they get open at the new station on Ashby and Sacramento. prices could be better (couldn't they be better on everything?!), but i don't feel like they're getting rich off of us; this stuff still just ain't cheap, and the gals there are doing what they can to make maximum benefit by seeking out BioD made from recycled source oil. nice buzz about the place, too; seems like the people i've met while waiting around there have been very diverse, but almost universally cool. read more

The organic feed that I buy here is great and I really appreciate their in-town location, though I'd drive a distance for that feed for my hens. The workers are kind, helpful and courteous. As a man, I leave here feeling as if I'm supporting an exceptional group of women, so it's also a political statement for me when I shop here. read more

It's all about recycled biodiesel and BO has it. Most biodiesel in the Bay Area comes from virgin oil (seriously, that's what they call it), which is not so good for the environment or food prices. But if you use recycled oil, you're taking something out of the waste stream that would have released its carbon anyway. Of course, it's top quality biodiesel to boot. Not to mention BO's diesel mechanic workshops and friendly idealistic staff. Get yourself a diesel car and get over there. read more

biofuel oasis is awesome! not only are they doing the biofuel right, with recycled oil from CA, but they are so considerate of us, their clients, sending emails about cold weather precautions and urban farming workshops.... it is like a radical revolutionary jump from feeding the corporate greed cycle every time you drive, to helping sustain actual people who are helping sustain you and the planet. yay! and that bit more per gallon we pay is just a little closer to the real, unsubsidized price of fuel. Hopefully it prompts us to drive a little less and walk and bike a little more. And they now have a station in San Anselmo, which will be easier sometimes for me. Super Grateful! read more

I visited Biofuel Oasis recently and was utterly charmed by the place. I was in search of a beekeeping suit, having just gotten a top bar hive, and was getting my bees the following weekend. The store is located in a historic, restored 1933 gas station on Ashby Avenue. Yep, that's where grandma would have fueled up in her little 1933 Coupe. I love what they've done with the building and how they have managed to put so many urban farming supplies (including a great selection of books) in such a small space. I got a great bee suit and was able to try it on, rather than trying to guess my size from a catalog. I had been in search of "tree collards," perennial collards that get big, couldn't find any except on eBay, and half of those had died. They had lovely tree collards that are now thriving in my garden. Books, chicken feeders and other stuff, lotions and oils, honey, kitchen stuff -- you just want to buy it all. The people there are really nice, which matters a lot to me. While I was there a guy who was one of their suppliers came in with a lovely-smelling tray of soaps he had made, so I had to get one of those. And they give classes as well! I don't live in Berkeley but I schedule trips so I can touch down at my favorite places, and Biofuel Oasis is definitely going on the list. read more

Wow. I heard great things and was excited to go. Maybe they were having a bad day, but they ruined my day, thus the bad review. As a business owner myself, I was so surprised at their callous attitude. The lady that seemed to be the owner could care less and was openly showing a resentful attitude. The decor is very nice, as are most of the goods sold. Beyond the service, they have a good thing going. However, when I'm treated like a piece of shiat, my reviews will reflect the service. I will try again, so hopefully I can upgrade the review next time around. read more

I like the Urban Farm Store. It's a small space - an antique gas station store, but with a surprising selection of chicken, bee, gardening and canning items. Also, pretty good selection of books re the aforementioned subjects. They also have a locally made lotion that I haven't purchased but I put some on my hands in the store and it smelled ahh-mazing. When I heard there was a biodiesel pump in Berkeley I had to go. I was okay with paying the $.85/gallon more than petro-diesel and okay with driving out of my way to get it. I'm supporting a positive movement....right?! When I arrived I was open to a nonconventional experience filling up however I was unpleasantly surprised by a complete lack of customer service. The store is full of all kinds of cool ecofriendly trinkets, this was my kind of place . I wanted to love everything about it but the poor service and attitude turned me off. It was clear that the lady at the desk did not want to help me out. She was rude and seemed annoyed by my normal requests(purchasing biodiesel). I am not at all surprised to encounter a complacent gas station attendant. It was the pseudo hippie bourgeois attitude that made this place unappealing. A $35 frequent visitor card that allows fuel purchase after hours & on holidays made me wonder why a business would charge frequent customers extra to purchase product? The fact that they don't take cash(really?) makes me wonder just who are they catering to? Bottomline: go to the dogpatch to save yourself $.30/gallon and having to deal with the scene at the oasis. read more
