Café Lalibela serves authentic Ethiopian cuisine with recipes that have been passed down through generation. The family that owns this place are passionate about sharing their culture. One of the family members came out and greeted our table. She shared a little bit about the history of Café Lalibela and how they made their way to Tempe. The staff also described the food that we were about to eat as they brought it out. We ordered a couple of platters and enjoyed eating it communally. The menu consists of Ethiopian favorites like Doro Wat, Tibs, Kitfo and a variety of vegan and gluten-free dishes. I am a big lentil fan and love that lentils are a big part of Ethiopian cuisine. I had the Lalibela Deluxe platter in front of me most of the evening and enjoyed the flavors and spices of each of the items. Ethiopian food is so vibrant and colorful. If you have never tried, they do not use silverware to pick up their food. Food is eaten with Injera - a spongy pancake-like flatbread that you use to scoop up your food. Café Lalibela has beautiful African décor all around the restaurant. They have a small shop in the front that sells gifts, food items, tea and coffee. One of the meats that were given to us, which happened to be my favorite, there was literally maybe three pieces to it, then the rest had a bit more. The foul is exceptionally garlicky. Perfectly so. My partner said the hummus was his favorite thing we ordered, and he's a pretty discerning dude! The Aldo was excellent. The grape leaves came out hot, which surprised me, but again - solid! Flatbread? Stellar. Maybe even better the next day. The kufta didn't particularly excite me, but I wasn't the one who ordered it, and my partner was happy. My shawarma wrap? Oh boy, that garlic sauce. They even perfectly portion the innards so your pickles aren't all stuck to one side and the fries to the other. You can have pickles in almost every bite! We also got several desserts to take home. I ordered the kebab plate, while my mom ordered the chicken tikka plate. Both came with a generous portion of seasoned rice, hummus, pita and a very fresh side salad. My kebab was very good -- 4/5. The meat was cooked extremely well, with a great char on the outside while remaining moist and tender inside. I personally thought it could have used more seasoning to really make the flavor pop, but that's a relatively minor criticism. I'll definitely order it again because seasoning can sometimes vary depending on who is cooking that day. The chicken tikka, however, was absolutely perfect -- 5/5! The chicken had exactly what you want from grilled Middle Eastern food: a beautiful char on the exterior while remaining incredibly juicy and tender inside. I wouldn't change a thing about it. The sides were also 5/5 across the board. The rice, hummus and salad all tasted remarkably fresh. The hummus was smooth and creamy, and the salad had crisp vegetables that tasted like they had just been cut rather than sitting around waiting to be served. Except my coworker ate here too and ALSO got sick, so that feels like a pretty important piece of evidence. This was the only meal I had Saturday and I spent all of Saturday and Sunday vomiting. I had to cancel plans and the pain was absolutely unbearable. If I'm going to get food poisoning Id prefer to be poisoned with great tasting food. Won't be back.
